Mike Martz has rarely had one pass-catching tight end during his nine seasons in the NFL as offensive coordinator or head coach. With the 49ers, Martz has two tight ends: Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker.
That point is discussed in my article for Thursday's paper, "Martz tinkering with two-TE formation."

MARTZ'S TIGHT ENDS
Here are the statistics for the top pass-catching tight ends in Mike Martz's offenses with the Rams and Lions:
1999, Rams: Roland Williams 25 catches, 226 yards, 6 TDs
2000, Rams: Williams 11-102-3
2001, Rams: Ernie Conwell 38-431-4
2002, Rams: Conwell 34-419-2
2003, Rams: Brandon Manumaleuna 29-238-2
2004, Rams: Manumaleuna 15-174-1
2005, Rams: Manumaleuna 13-129-1
2006, Lions: Dan Campbell 21-308-4
2007, Lions: Sean McHugh 17-252-0

With Jim Hostler as offensive coordinator last season, Vernon Davis caught 52 passes for 509 yards and 4 touchdowns, while Delanie Walker's stats were 21-174-1. Consider it a disappointment if both men don't improve on those numbers by a healthy margin this season.

Comment: Is it just me or does any one else think that Vernon Davis should take some advice from Frank Gore or Micheal Robinson on getting lower when about to get hit. It seemed to me that he was getting brought down by the collar too much.

Madden 08 is last years edition, madden 09 is due out August 11th. And you took 4 years off? I took the 07/08 Niners to the Super Bowl baby!!! Honestly, it helped ease the pain...

Comment: Frank Gore is set to have a monster year. Having to pass catching TE's who block too, will really open things up. Looks like Martz is staying true to his word, making Gore the focal point. But, not much is being said or made of our WR's...If we don't have consistent legitimate threats at the crucial WR pos, then 2 TE's mean nothing...BTW, is Alex getting enough reps?? I think the way Nolan's haandling this competition is comical! The real open comp is at HEAD COACH!! Fire Nolan, Promote Martz!!

Comment: Matt - Do you know why is Adam Snyder playing left tackle in practice?...I understand Duckket is hurt, but dont we have a 4th tackle on the team?....and i thought the plan was for Adam Snyder to settle into guard.
Response: Snyder lined up at left tackle Wednesday afternoon because Staley, Duckett and Jennings sat out practice. Basically, Toledo and Snyder were the only guys available to practice who know left tackle. Simm was moved to the right side, where he's competing against Jennings. Staley is expected to return Thursday. --Matt M.

Comment: You guys are a hoot! One lousy practice and you think it is all over for the team this year. Seems to me we still have 5 weeks before the games count. There is a lot for the offense to swallow and digest here. They hit an early wall. Big deal. How they recover from this lousy practice is what counts. As for VD's and Walker's numbers this year, I think it is more likely that their total receptions might be down (given that Martz spreads the ball around to the WRs and the RBs), but their yards should be up. If VD gets say 40 receptions for 600 yards (15 ypc) and 6 TDs, and Walker gets 20 receptions for 300 yards (again 15 ypc) and 4 TDs, how can that be considered bad? The RB position is likely to get at least 60-80 receptions (that is rather conservative, I think) this year and the WRs around 200-250 (again, a conservative estimate). That's 320-390 completions out of the QB spot. The point being that, while I don't think VD will get as many receptions as people seem to think, I do believe his yards per catch will be higher, and his TD total will be too.

Comment: Matt,
We've all heard about how the two tight end set will be more prolific than in years past, yet historically the stats don't bode well for either TE in Martz's system. Frank Gore has been praised for his receiving abilities out of the backfield and his role as a receiver in Martz's offense has been reported as being expanded to include new routes similar to what Marshall Faulk has run in the past.
Given the lack of enthusiasm in Bruce's stares into the depths of his locker and Battle's lack of enthusiasm, it seems either the receivers have been overlooked in the planning of Martz's new offense, or there is a general lack of confidence amongst the wide receivers in the QB position.
Battle seems to have been overlooked in this offense. Two new players have been brought in and handed starting roles despite age (Bruce) and lack of starting experience (Johnson). Jerry Sullivan has been recognized as one of the best position coaches in the league, yet some of the players he favors don't seem to have starring roles (or even supporting, e.g. Lelie) in our offense. Nolan has rated Battle's blocking prowess near that of some of the leaders at his position in the game today (Hines Ward), yet we hear little about Arnaz Battle's role in the coming offense.
Now we're hearing talk that the team isn't implementing more 3 WR and 4 WR sets until later in training camp. I know it's speculation, but it seems we're not utilizing Battle to his full advantage in a Martz style offense, especially given his blocking prowess and Gore in the backfield.

Comment: Having a clean shot at the Rams organization and a young and coming D sure didn't hurt either ninerindallas, I'm optimistic too that Mad Mike will wake up Alex and VD and find a way to get Frank back to the Pro Bowl as Marshall Faulk II.

Comment: Matt why wouldnt the 49ers have any interest in Bret Favre? They r really a team with no true starting QB right? And if Nolan wants to last more than this year I would say do anything to win. Im pretty sure Favre could learn this system pretty quick or they could ease it down for him.

Comment: not only will this 2 tight end set {davis and walker} have an impact on the passing game but gore will benifet either from the extra blocker, or because the def is worried about the pass. that is going to be a nice 5 yd and goal to go set to come out with. Personally i think the offense is going to have a big big year with martz in control, and if they do the Yorks will lock him up into a 3 or 4 year deal along with Nolan. I do not Believe other teams will come after martz simply because he had those issues with his heart {why he left the rams}. head coach is an EXTREMLY stressful spot. not a good place for a guy with heart issue's. and yes cordinator is a stressful spot too {particularly when doing things in the "martz school"}, but not nearly to the same extent. thats why no one jumped on him this last year, and probably why he signed on the dotted line so fast to run our offense

Comment: Watch the Martz/Gore relationship too. I'm anxious for the Offense to get into rhythm and see the bullets fly when it's run at full speed. Might take a few weeks of regular season action to get it right, but VD on a LB or S is where the money is. Quick slant and go or seam routes off run action. We'll challenge for the NFC West, just have to work and stay healthy. No one in this division has the RB/TE weapons we possess, so why not utilize them?

Comment: Davis will tear things up this season. I think D. Walker's numbers should look like Davis' last year. Either way, it should be a lot more fun with Mad Mike as OC instead of Hopeless Hos.
