Niners coach Mike Nolan held a conference call with the beat reporters who cover the team at 5 p.m. Here are some of the highlights.
Before we get going, just thought I'd pass along some pertinent information. In 2006, Mike Matz installed his offense with the Lions. During that exhibition season, Jon Kitna completed just 20 of 39 passes (51.3 percent) for 233 yards with one TD and one interception. His passer rating was 67.6.
Once the regular season began, he took every snap at QB that season despite getting sacked 63 times. He completed 372 of 596 passes (62.4 percent) for 4,208 yards with 21 TDs and 22 interceptions and a passer rating of 79.9.
* * *
--Nolan says the team has to do a better job in the turnover department. He said he thought all three QBs moved the ball, but they didn't get it in the end zone. Obviously, they still have a couple weeks of training camp and lot of practices to get better. He thought the way the offense was generally effective but they missed out on some plays that could've been big. "It's there for the taking," Nolan said. "So I know our players will be encouraged looking at film at what is there when you do what you have to do."
--Jay Moore did good job (more on him later). Josh Morgan played well, of course.
--Nolan has not made a decision on who will start at QB next week. There is no timetable to make the decision. They do have a full week to prepare for the game next Saturday against the Packers.
--When asked about Smith's touch on short passes. Nolan said some of that is because of pressure applied from the Raiders' defense. He said even when JTO threw a screen, the ball was batted down. Alex has longest delivery than the other QBs. Guys who have shorter delivery, generally throw short passes better.
--Smith had two throws he could've done better, Nolan said -- one screen and one to Jason Hill. Other than that, he had some good throws. Nolan wants to see the QB have a command of the offense. Outside of that, whoever moves it down the field will be the person he wants to be his starter.
--Nolan said there is a learning progression all QBs go through. He's looking at the execution of the offense. Shaun and Alex worked with the backups, so that has to be taken into account.
--JTO throws the ball on time. That's a characteristic of his game. That's key for this offense. By design, the areas are specific where the ball is supposed to be thrown. With his quick release, he releases the ball to those spots sooner than the others.
--Who did the best job of the three? Nolan said he has to take everything into consideration. He said JTO did a good job other than the two turnovers, but those things did happen. They could've been avoided. (The interception and fumble.) He thought he had great command of the offense. He was moving the offense. Alex went in and moved the ball well. He did not make the glaring mental errors, but he did have accuracy issues. Hill is the more difficult one to evaluate because of the group he was in there. Nolan said it would've been nice if someone had moved them down the field and stuck it in the end zone.
--Nolan said there were some good things that he liked from the QBs, but there were other things that he didn't like that could end up costing the team a game.
--At what point would he like to make a decision? Nolan said he'd like to have made it yesterday, but he wants to make the right decision, so he's going to take as long as needed.
--Asked about Zak Keasey's runs . . . Nolan said Mike Martz wanted to give the line some confidence with some runs, so when Smith had a chance to pass the defense wasn't teeing off on the quarterback. "You don't want to look at it like you're keeping him from throwing the ball, it's when he does throw it, you want to have a chance to have success," Nolan said.
--On kicking the FG, Nolan said the special-teams need work, too.
--Justin Smith played 12 plays (those stats are on my previous blog). Nolan talked about that effective stunt Smith worked with Ray McDonald.
--Jay Moore made some plays in the fourth quarter, but he made some errors, Nolan said. If all were bright spots, they might move him up to the second team. But they're looking for the overall game. Nolan said he's not looking to change the depth chart based on that performance.
--On that JTO lateral to DeShaun Foster . . . Nolan said it was a high-risk thing that he did. That was a dangerous play. At the same time, Nolan said JTO's insides were telling him, "How can I help this team?" Nolan said he'd put that play in the context of the two turnovers, as a play he should not have tried.
--Two new guys on the left side of the offensive line (Joe Staley and Adam Snyder). How did they play? "I'd like for them to do better than they did last night," Nolan said. "We can play better."
--Nolan said he does not want to dilute Patrick Willis' play by giving the radio responsibility. Last night, Michael Lewis and Keith Lewis, both safeties, wore the radio device. But when a play is hand-signaled in, it goes to Willis.
--Injury report: WRs Bryant Johnson (hamstring) and Ashley Lelie (calf) will not be available to play this week, Nolan said. Both sat out the 49ers' exhibition opener on Saturday.
OT Damane Duckett's knee is "a problem," Nolan said. He will not practice in the immediate future -- no timetable was given. C Eric Heitmann (right hip) will be re-checked in the morning.
Allen Rossum (knee bruise) is OK; S Marcus Hudson (quadriceps) should be OK toward the end of the week; G Chilo Rachal came in this morning with an unspecificied "ding" but Nolan said it's minor; WR Jason Hill (groin) will probably miss practice early in the week.

Comment: IndianaJim, can you please detail the TV you saw the game, or were you playing a Madden game and you thought the 49ers beat the Raiders? You're the one that needs some wine and cheese at the Napa rehab center where doctors can find your REALITY. You're an embarrassment to anybody that has hired people for a job, and if people can't do a job, YOU FIRE THEM MORON! You don't give them cake and cookies and pat them on the freaking back, YOU FIRE THEM! You hire somebody, they don't want to do the job you ask of them, YOU FIRE THEM!
My apologies for the Michael Savage rant.

Comment: Indiana Jim- Quit trying to be the voice of reason. This team looked terrible Friday. They looked like the same buch of losing dopes of the last few years. People need to see progress and things building. Great Morgan looks good but VD looks like the same lost puppy with no feel for the game. Dude we have so many key ???'s and this point it is pathetic. The middle of our defense is in limbo THREEE weeks prior to the season starting. THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE and Nolan is supposed to be a defensive guru. F grade for Nolan. Then you have this Qb joke of a competition. As many have pointed out NOBODY on this roster is a quality #1 NFL QB. Now, maybe JTO can pull it off if he pulls his head out of his A!*, but that is a big if. Smith is runined at this time; trashed shoulder and no confidence because of so many coaching and systme changes (all on Nolan). Lastly, I thought Hill might be the answer, but I was way wrong becuase this guy must not know where the weight room is located. He needs to dial up Balco and get some product. Talent wins in this league and Nolan will not play kids with talent over old lame dopes like Roman because of his stupid old school mentality. Lastly, the draft this year appears to bring no immeadite vaule. Looks like the only bright star came in the 6th round? Mc numbnut in the front office deserves the pipe for that one. No TED or QB prospect. Two HUGE NEEDS for this team, but heck, we have potnetial future sould be at least future backups in training......

Comment: Any way you look at it the Niners are still the same sorry ass team from last year. The trouble for them is Seattle is still better and the Cards/Rams are getting better. Last place in the NFC West and hopefully McNolan gets fired. Another four years wasted and season ticket holders leaving in droves.

Comment: Every fumble in the Raider game was recovered by the Raiders. The 49ers players seemed to lack a sense of urgency. At least in theory, job are on the line now. I've never been big Nolan supporter (even before he started talking like an idiot) but now I believe that he has lost this team. Make a change, (Singertary, Martz, anyone) for changes sake and show the players you mean business Mr York.

Comment: Wow, its like Indiana Jim hasn't the abortion of the last three years of football on Nolan here in SF. Nolan should have been fired after last season, why's it any different now? If anything he's worse at the job today that he was at this time last season. No one here likes him and he has not demonstrated any coaching ability.

Comment: Let's also not forget that the offense didn't look terrible with J.T. O'Sullivan in. O'Sullivan looked terrible, but the rest of them looked okay. We haven't seen the best quarterback on the roster play with the first team yet.

Comment: People... sheesh. I am embarrassed to count myself among you as a 49ers fan. The only problem with success is it has made us the whiniest bunch of turd-mouthed two-faced Kevin Lynch-mob fans in the entire NFL. WE HAVEN'T EVEN PLAYED ONE REGULAR SEASON GAME and you're calling for Nolan's head. I was calling for Nolan's head at the end of last season, but he's here now. So let's see what happens before we tie the knot on the ol' rope.

Comment: Matt, I agree with Vince. I have been patiently waiting out the quarterback position, but am now angry. Nolan is showing himself to be an ass****. I had been willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and a chance to build our team with good to excellent players who have good character and play hard. He is demonstrating vindictiveness toward Alex Smith that is borderline mean and asinine. I watched Smith's "opportunity" Friday, please what a joke. To offer judgment on his very limited time on the field is wrong, wrong. Listening to Nolan's comments about Smith is sad. I would say that it is time to fire Nolan, right now. Understand I am of the mindset of giving a coach an opportunity to succeed, i.e. Bill Cowher. I would never have said this previously, but Nolan's insane vindictiveness, which I am sure he would deny, is unacceptable, period. As Vince has pointed out Alex has never really had an opportunity to grow within a system or even to have the same coordinator for a few years. His coach at Utah clearly stated that Alex needs time to understand a system before excelling. This quarterback competition has become a sham. I say give Alex the entire first half of the next game and if he shows enough to build on, end the competition and move forward. If he fails to move the offense after 3-4 games and shows no growth than switch out then. Nolan is acting like a man on the run. If the offence succeeds and Martz becomes a hot commodity he is gone and the Niners would (?) have to make him the head coach to keep him. If the Niners do not win he is gone anyways. I predict short of an NFC championship game appearance Nolan is gone and he seems to communicate to the media, at times, like a man in turmoil inside, like a man on a short rope, whose time in power is coming to an end. Vindictiveness from a person in power is ugly and we are seeing the inner workings of this bear fruit within our beloved 49ers.

Comment: Nolan is the worst I've ever seen at game day decisionmaking. There's simply no way to justify getting conservative near the goal line in a preseason game. He is literally worse than the average bonehead fan at that aspect of the game. He has some positives as a coach but he will make bad decision after bad decision this season until he turns that function over to somebody else. Please, somebody, try to convince Nolan that this is going to cost him his job unless something else does it to him first.

Comment: Enough from the guys who have only played football with a video game controller. having 4 o.c.'s for a 23 year old qb is terrible for his development. The only way for a qb to look good is to be comfortable with the offense he is running. once you've been in an offense for atleast 2-3 years knowing your progressions, knowing your hot reads (which we didn't have last year), and where your personnel is supposed to be becomes more instinctual and reactionary translating into a more confident relaxed qb.i.e. peyton manning's been in the same offense for 11 years. when it is new you think too much and try to force things and make mistakes and short arm your throws, like throwing behind your target. and there is a reason why both qb's have never been starters anywhere else and this is jto's 8th team. Lets not also forget we haven't had a reciever since T.O. And the line hasn't helped. give him a chance he's extremely young still. and nolan undermining him because "special teams needed work" needs to stop. have faith in him for one more year. Oh and fire nolan.

Comment: as much as i hate to say it, alex smith needs to ask for a trade if he is not the starting QB in week one. its really hard watching Nolan wreck this kids career with his ego guided head games.. richard, shaun hill did an "ok" job against future practice squad players and you are acting like his best girl. then you say to keep b. lloyd?? maybe its time for you to find a new sport to follow.

But Nolan has got to go. Even the shiny-happy people can't defend Nolan. So how do we oust him? If we are real 49er fans we find way to get the Yorks to fire him. Comment: Give ASmith the #1 reps and end this charade. He is clearly our best option. JTO's strength coming in was his knowledge of the system, yet he made incredibly poor decisions and was reckless with the football. Although effective at times, JTO looked squirrely. The kid has played for 10 different NFL teams for a reason. Although Smith holds the ball too long and tends to throw behind receivers- he showed better presence. Smith is the most athletic of the bunch and clearly has the strongest arm. His long release and indecision can only get better with more reps and support of the organization. Hill simply lacks the arms strength to get the ball down field in a Martz style offense. He's gotta be our #3. In a preseason format we're going to be out matched. We were rolling with Clayton and Zak Easy- they're rolling with McFadden, Bush and Rankin (Stockton product). They handed it our 2's and 3's. Josh Morgan looks special; hopefully this year's Marques Colton. VD "click clacked" wonderfully in shifts and motions but when he had his one opportunity to turn it up and get vertical he couldn't move the chains. Goldston makes plays. He should be the starter.

Comment: Byron Leftwich Why don't the Niners bring him in?
Posted By: Rich, San Ramon (09/08/2008 8:24:15 PM)
Comment: In 2005 Nolan and McCloughan cited Smith's versatility as one thing that distinguished him from Rogers. The record show, however, that Alex did not click with Mike McCarthey's WCO, he is not showing much in Mike Martz' offense, and Hostler's offense woke up once Shaun Hill came in. So maybe it was Smith who was the limited one. Hey, he was on the right trajectory in 2006, that was no mirage. But neither before nor since has he shown much more than one or two really good plays amongst a bunch of clunkers. It just looks like every play is a struggle for him. Maybe Norv Turner was Smith's last best hope for NFL success.

Comment: Screw Smith. His dilevery is so slow you can know where the ball is going before it ever leaves his hand and he can't lead a receiver to save his life. No excuses. He has had OTS, mini and now TC to get this cirrect. He also has no touch. He is a hack, an over paid hack. For what he is due to be paid next year, trust me he is getting cut at some point. You do not keep a $10MM hack around. We can get his kind of crappy play for much cheaper. See, Sullivan, JT.

Comment: Nolan is an idiot!! "Nolan said it would've been nice if someone had moved them down the field and stuck it in the end zone." It would have been nice to call a play that would allow Smith the opportunity to throw a touchdown at the end of the second half. I notice "The IDIOT" never mentioned not giving Smith the 3rd or 4th down try. "The IDIOT" can't remember the play calling or the yardage.

Comment: I am so tired of hearing anything from Nolan. He looks good in a suit and sounded good a few years ago in interviews. He sounds like an idiot. This football team is in trouble! We need a new head coach, maybe Singletary and if Martz stayed around as oc would be sweet. Either way I dont care, we need a new HC. Install a system and let the players master it. It usually takes a few years. What we have here is a young group of talented players whose growth has been stunted by a new playbook every year. Now I dont know if Alex is the QB we all hope he can be, but we will never know because of 4 different playbooks in 4 years. U know how big those playbooks are. Their like encyclopedias. This sucks and Nolan has got to go!

I didn't even realize that Hill doesn't know how to throw a tight spiroll. Makes me sick... Now I have to hear all of the Sorry ass Raider fans talk shit for the next month. Other then that I think the niners are on their way to becoming a decent football team. But then I think like they need to just put smith in with the starters. Comment: Yes, please ask if it was Martz or Nolan making the decisions and why they were so interested in seeing how Keasey runs with the ball when Smith was in. Also ask if he felt like the 49ers energy level matched the Raiders.
Response: Martz calls the offensive plays; Nolan makes the game-management decisions, such as whether to go for it on fourth downs. --Matt M.
