Niners fill final two spots on nine-man practice squad

Offensive tackle Joe Toledo was spotted this morning walking into the 49ers' team offices here in Santa Clara. Hmmm. That seemed to be a pretty good indication he had been added to the 49ers' practice squad.

After one well-placed phone call, that suspicion was confirmed. Toledo played every exhibition game as the backup to left tackle Joe Staley.

The 49ers also added wide receiver Chris Hannon (6-3, 205) to the practice squad. Hannon originally signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2006. He spent most of '06 on the Chiefs' practice squad before being elevated to the active roster. He went to camp with the Chiefs in '07 and spent all of '07 on the Panthers' practice squad.

He had three catches for 75 yards and a touchdown in the exhibition season before getting released.

Hannon attended Tennessee, where he caught 69 passes for 850 yards and 12 TDs in his career.

The 49ers' practice squad is now complete (though many changes can be expected throughout the season). The p-squad consists of RB Thomas Clayton, DL Atiyyah Ellison, TE J.J. Finley, LB Larry Grant, DL Louis Holmes, OL Toledo and Ramiro Pruneda, and WRs Dominique Zeigler and Hannon.

Some in the Bay Area might be disappointed WR Cam Colvin (De La Salle High) was not added to the squad. He showed some flashes during training camp, and was at his best during the team's joint practice Aug. 4 against the Raiders. However, he seemed to drop off a little after that, and did not have a reception while seeing limited playing time during the exhibition season.

Comment: Matt, if this season does not go well, what are the chances Mike Martz becomes the head coach? If it does go well, what are the chances he comes back as OC?

Comment: I drafted Chris Hannon in the seventh round in a Madden franchise a few years ago. He became an absolute BEAST. There's still hope!

Comment: Hey Matt, is it true Banta-Cain took a pay cut to make the team? Michael Lombardi is posting that on his blog.

Comment: Matt, Is it accurate to say that McCloughan is making PS roster decisions as well? What's your take? Thx

Comment: Matt, How does the practice squad work? You need an O & D team = 22 players. You listed a handful of players. Do the second and third team players fill in on the practices squad?

Comment: I for one am disappointed Cam Colvin doesn't get to expand his knowledge of the game on the practice squad. He played little in college and everybody knew he was a loooong term project. He seemed to have some physical talent but needed coaching. I know nothing of Chris Hannon, perhaps he is in a similar boat. I for one have faith in the mind trust leading the team. We have more talent on the team than we have had in years, going in to the season healthy, and I think we are going to surprise some people with how tough this team is.
