Back by popular demand . . . folks, it's the first GPS game of the season for the 49ers.
Tomorrow's road game against the beat-up Seattle Seahawks should give us our first idea of where the 49ers stand within the NFL universe.
Are they going to be irrelevant once again or are do they have a chance to do something this season? We should have more of an idea tomorrow. After all, what can you deduce about this team from the season opener?
Look at the stats. The 49ers' offense ranks sixth in the league in yards per play (6.61). The defense is fifth in yards per play (3.96). Ah, but those turnovers. The 49ers had five giveaways and zero takeaways.
So as I sit in the airport, scarfing down a CPK creation, I'll share with you some of the key matchups in tomorrow's game (please feel free to leave your own key matchups in the comments section):
49ers secondary vs. Seahawks receivers: This stat comes from PR ace Ryan Moore. The 49ers have the most-experienced starting defensive backfield in the NFL in both games played (499) and games started (426). The Seahawks, meanwhile, will start Courtney Taylor and Logan Payne, who have a combined nine NFL receptions. This perceived advantage should empower defensive coordinator Greg Manusky to move Michael Lewis closer to the line of scrimmage and send more pass rushers at Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck.
RB Frank Gore vs. MLB Lofa Tatupu: The "Frank Gore Ratio" is alive with the 49ers, as O.C. Mike Martz said. He wants to get the ball in Gore's hands a certain amount of times. (I'm figuring he wants Gore to touch the ball on runs and passes at least 25 times.) Tatupu is a tackling machine in the middle of the Seahawks defense. If Gore can make him miss, it could turn into a huge gain.
RT Jonas Jennings vs. DE Patrick Kerney: It's time for Jennings to play football. He can start to get back on the good side of a lot people with the 49ers if he can put the clamps on Kerney, who led the NFC with 14.5 sacks last season and had one sack in the opener last week against the Bills.
LT Joe Staley vs. LB Julian Peterson: On the other edge . . . Staley had his hands full against speed moves a week ago. Peterson is one of the best at beating the tackle around the corner. Peterson is back wearing his familiar No. 98 this season after wearing No. 59 in his first two Seahawks seasons. Staley has to move his feet and stay in contact with Peterson, or else Peterson will harass J.T. O'Sullivan all game long.
QB J.T. O'Sullivan vs. FS Brian Russell: Whether the turnovers were his fault or not (and Martz said two of his three turnovers should be blamed on others), O'Sullivan has to take care of the football. Russell will be roaming the secondary, trying to outsmart O'Sullivan.
LB Patrick Willis vs. RB Julius Jones: Willis is a key man in slowing down Jones, who figures to see a lot of action for a team that has very few options available to it in the passing game. Willis had some difficulty last week getting off of blocks. He needs to be able to make the play that's right at him as well as the play in which he has to cover some ground toward the sideline.
NT Aubrayo Franklin vs. C Chris Spencer: And part of Willis' success comes down to Franklin in the middle. He must do a better job attracting double teams and being sticky enough so that the guards can't get to that second level and take Willis out of the play.
DE Parys Haralson vs. RT Ray Willis: Haralson comes in to rush the passer, and he did very well in that role in the opener with two sacks. He'll be up against Willis, filling in for Sean Locklear. Willis held his own against the Bills' Chris Kelsay last week, though he did allow a couple pressures.
Special teams vs. special teams: Both squads struggled in special teams. The 49ers had some penalties that cost them huge chunks of field position, and Takeo Spikes muffed a kickoff. The Seahawks allowed punt return for a touchdown and surrendered another touchdown on a fake punt.
* * *
Return specialist Allen Rossum (hamstring) has been added to the injury report as probable. (The designation probable means it's a virtual certainty he'll be available for the game.)
However, with Donald Strickland "questionable," the 49ers might need to make some adjustments to their active roster. If the 49ers stick with eight active DBs, Marcus Hudson is likely to get the call.
* * *
Pass-rusher Tully Banta-Cain might be inactive again. He has vowed to make the most of his situation, after he told the Chronicle's Tom Fitzgerald that he was "devastated" when he got the word that he would not suit up for the season opener.
Banta-Cain admitted that right now he's the "odd man out," but he said he'll be ready when he's called upon. I asked if he's thought about asking for a trade, and he said it has not gotten to that point.
The fact is that Banta-Cain wants to be with the 49ers, and the 49ers want Banta-Cain. That became apparent on Aug. 30 when Banta-Cain accepted a salary reduction from $2.2 million to $1 million (next year's contract was also adjusted from $2.475M to $1.25M) to remain with the 49ers. Otherwise, he would've been free to go to any team.
"I want to be here," Banta-Cain said. "And I'll keep working hard. Good things happen to those who wait, right?"
* * *
Hey, that was close. While deep in thought writing this post at the airport, the time got away from me. Don't worry I'm on my 3 o'clock flight. I apologize for any typos.

Comment: From what I read of that Forbes report, how in the world have we not had a local blackout? How in the world do we keep selling out and I don't see a huge majority of 49ers fans? NFL needs to look at how full our stadium is by game day, and if it's clearly less then 25%, the game needs to be blacked out. I feel really bad us Bay Area fans are in the 5% category of getting the 'crap game' and 90% gets the 'better game' in the 1pm hour. It's sad if the Raiders were at home, we'd only get Raiders and 49ers, or 49ers/some other team at 1pm, but not a 10am game on CBS. NFL ought to seriously let both Fox and CBS get double coverage on Sundays and give Bay Area fans bettter games then this. IF the Forbes report is not an indication the Yorks OUGHT TO sell this team, I feel really bad of the stupidity that has gone around. The Yorks got to sell this team and fire Mike NOlan now.

Comment: Also..Justin Smith vs Walter Jones. The edge goes to Jones who owns almost everyone. It's possible his age will catch up to him towards the later stages of the game vs the youthful Smith? We'll be moving Smith all over to find the best match-ups anyways. BTW...in the beginning of last season Manusky had our front 7 jumping & moving all over on the pre-snaps causing ample confusion vs the OLine. What happened to that?? It was very effective. Can we get back to doing some of that again?
Posted By: Phillyniner (14/09/2008 7:10:36 AM)
Comment: Jeff Ulbrich vs Takeo Spikes: They may be on the same team, but they are still competing with each other for the starting Ted spot. Both made mistakes last week, particularly on special teams. Whoever can limit mistakes will likely see more snaps.

Comment: Matt, you reported a while back if Jeff Garcia were released, the Niners would pursue him. There is a report on Fox that the Bucs called the Niners inquiring about a trade. Can you investigate that and find out if it may happen? He would be a huge upgrade at #2, Hill at #3, and dump Martin.

Comment: Hi Matt, I'm back in India so your articles are my 49er lifeline. In Nolans' tenure there have been no must win games. Maybe in the last weeks of the season to appease York and not to mess up the book keeping. All our talk about how bad the situation is comes back to the dollar. York won't pay anybody while Nolan is on the books. Why pay two guys. If by some miracle we go 7-9 Nolan stays and we'll be in the hole for another half decade regardless if he goes or stays after next year.

Comment: Can I break the dialouge string for a moment and ask a general HELP question? Is that Patrick Willis in the recently aired TV ad for Under Armour? I've only spotted it twice and is appears as though he's featured in a couple of very quick takes and, (perhaps), pulling the long sleeve T over his head? Thanks for any feedback, and of course, beat the 'Hawks!

Comment: How pathetic is this, they are the 3rd least valuable team, and the 2nd lowest when it comes to bringing in money. http://www.forbes.com/lists/2008/30/sportsmoney_nfl08_NFL-Team-Valuations_Rank.html

Comment: Then MikeCatch, isn't that a good enough reason for the Yorks to SELL The team? Good God, next thing you know, Goodell may have to morgage bail out this team. If the Yorks are sick of losing money, well, just sell the team. Make it a lot easier. Save us grief, save you grief, save the city grief, save the local blackout, prevent a move to LA, please Yorks, Please sell the team!

Comment: Look, Truth, or RU Truth, ha ha ha, sorry, couldn't resist that one from Smackdown. Look, I don't go around using other names like maybe you do. See how easy it is to accuse you, or Randy, or Marco, or anybody else here? I just disagree with JT and Nolan, period. Doesn't mean I hate the team, but nobody wants to tell me what and how can you get Nolan removed, period. You lose a game, step closer to getting Nolan out. You win a game, we're a step closer to retaining Nolan. Remember 06 and 07? Now, even though I was NOT on the Nolan firing that year, look at who we beat: 2 wins over a hurt Hawks team and a win over Denver that gave their season up. Minus those wins, it's another 4 and 12 season. I don't want another 7 and 9 season where York will go ,hmmmmm, Nolan's working out after all. We'll keep him. Buzzzzzzzt, that's how you become a joke in the league by keeping Nolan. Now if at the end of the season, we sack NOlan a day later (God forbid he'll last all season long), then MAYBE York can redeem himself a LITTLE bit, and then he better have a better coach lined up or say hello to LA 49ers.

Comment: Mike Nolan vs. Mike Holmgren: Will Holmgren thoroughly outcoach Nolan despite the Seahawks crippling injury issues? (Answer: yes). Will the Yorks then think they should make a new old Mike the new face of the franchise?

Comment: niners fans, let be realistic. The reason for nolan to be back another year cause, owner york not going to make the same mistaked he made to erickson and donahue. Erickson had 3yrs under contract and donahue signed a 5yrs deal contract extension. Owner york let those 2 go at end of season cause they were both loudsy. York had to paid out the remaining of their contracts. He did not do the right thing and he had no knowledge of football whatsoever. He brought in Nolan cause Nolan's father used to be the head coach of niners. Mike nolan has been an assistant for 19yrs and got a job to be HC of niners. Nolan signed a 5yrs contract and his record for the first 3yrs were bad. York is not going to make the same mistaked like he did to erickson and donahue that is why he brought nolan back for another year. If york was going to fire nolan, he would have to pay out the remain of nolan contracts and would have to hire another HC and that would be too much to bear on his behalf.

Comment: 49ERS WR's vs Seattle's secondary. Last year we knew everyone was going to stack the box vs Frank. I was praying for an effective passing game to open the running lanes. With Martz here his mentality & aggressiveness is perfect for this which IMO is the reason for the success Gore is starting to regain again. That's how I see this Offense. Martz's creativity with the pass to set up the run. Once the air game is established we can attack anyone with all types of variety at all angles...Gore's running, screens, crossing routes, & passing short/int/deep. Once we get Gore going I'd really like to see a play action fake then go deep against this secondary. Also I think we should take at least 2 long ball shots MINIMUM to our WR's in this game to loosen up the D, give them more to think about, & keep them on their heels. (And yes..no doubt VD should get his share.) I believe our WR's will have a good game vs this secondary & that JTO, the OLine & our overall pass pro will be up to the task. I predict our Offense will make a good jump in progress & chemistry in this game & this will be our first W!

Comment: If Nolan and Manuksy cannot get this 49ers defense fired up to clamp down on a banged up Seattle offense, then, in my IMO, forget the GPS......its time the team went back to using a compass.
The more intriguing question is how will Martz approach this game....will he come out guns blazing, going deep, taking chances to set the tone early or will he opt to establish the run first to slow down the Seattle pass rush and then look for passing opportunities when the Seahawks move up to stop the run.
I am hoping to see fewer mistakes and a more determined game by the Niners, winning 17-13. Go Niners.
Posted By: NJM (13/09/2008 8:50:33 PM)
Comment: There's a second "GPS feature" that this game will reveal to us -- one that goes beyond the Niners' place on the NFL's landscape... One would think Nolan should be able to design a game plan that takes advantage of a team that is starting two scrubs at WR, a banged up QB and running game that hardly qualifies as OJ and the Electric Company... If he can't find a way to win this one, then the GPS will also provide us with a better handle on his "ETA" getting to the unemployment line.
Posted By: Cyrus (13/09/2008 8:17:18 PM)
Comment: I think Leroy Hill may be responsible for covering VD, and he is one of the few LBs in the league who has the size and speed to do so. I hope the 49ers bring back their 2006 strategy and run straight at JP. He was always a liability against the run.

Comment: OK fans, let's try and make a promise: Try not to flame, NO TROLLING, NO IMPERSONATIONS, and try to be REASONABLE instead of ARGUMATIVE. IF you don't like something being said and can't disagree, DON"T RESPOND. Let's keep this forum as it is and act like mature 49ers fans. No matter how I may feel, I am a 49ers fan. I just wanted my W to be cleaner then this.

Comment: Can someone explain "GPS"?
Posted By: LodiGrapePicker (13/09/2008 6:35:56 PM)
Comment: One more matchup...JTO playing his first real game against a stadium full of hostile fans. Go Niners...it's time for the team to man up or go home!!
Posted By: louie (13/09/2008 6:07:08 PM)
Comment: If Martz is willing to RUN more than pass (which he should do in every game until the QB and receivers are working well together) the 49ers will neutralize the rush, open up big play opportunities for all of the receivers, control the clock, and win.
Posted By: dms (13/09/2008 6:04:24 PM)
Comment: Experience is meaningless if there aren't playmakers in the group. In '81, Coach Walsh and Seifert went with three rookie DBs and a third-year free safety with all of 24 games under his belt. The result was SB XVI. That quartet was known as "Dwight Hicks and the Hot Licks" - Lott, Wright & Williamson.
Posted By: Razoreater (13/09/2008 4:57:50 PM)
Comment: J.Peterson vs. VD-if Dr. Martz bunches receivers to one side isolating VD to the other forcing Peterson to cover him mano ee mano.
Response: Peterson does not cover the TE as much as he did when he was with the 49ers. Now, he rushes the passer. --Matt M.
Posted By: Global Nomad (13/09/2008 4:44:14 PM)
Comment: Hey Matt, how did Frank Gore react after last week's game? He has been pretty emotional in the past. Is he excited about the opportunity to get more carries/touches in tomorrow's game? With everything else going on, we rarely here about "the centerpiece".
Response: He was frustrated by the team's lack of offensive plays, but he's really fired up about his role in Martz's offense. --Matt M.
Posted By: RealFan49 (13/09/2008 4:43:22 PM)
Comment: Our TE's against their LBs - huge advantage for 49ers that could/should win the game for us. Peterson's rushing the passer, quick hot read to VD or Delanie, 7 points.

Comment: PLEASE NO MORE GPS GAMES. Every time you mention that its a GPS game the niners have ended getting blown out. Why cant every game just be a normal game.
Posted By: TT (13/09/2008 4:33:05 PM)
Comment: Match Up: Mike Martz vs. Mike Nolan. Can Nolan get out of the way and let Martz(mistakes and all) be aggressive. Will Nolan jump in and be conservative at key moments? Also, I think the niners defense should be better than Seattle's injured O(crazy thought I know) so we should not blitz too much. Seattle should have a hard time stringing together 1st downs but giving up big plays could beat the niners. My prediction: JTO throws two td's and one int. and the niners win 24-17.
Posted By: Rich, San Ramon (13/09/2008 4:32:14 PM)
Comment: One more MATCHUP: Niners quick pass to WR versus Marcus Trufant trying to make one-on-one open field tackles with a broken hand.
Posted By: Rich, San Ramon (13/09/2008 4:20:14 PM)
Comment: Matchup: Mike Holmgren's mind for offense vs Mike Nolan's mind for defense. In 2005, Holmgren's offense shredded an outmatched Niner defense. In 2006 Nolan, with some better talent, went "big nickel" with Keith Lewis as a LB/S hybrid. That, plus some key Seahawk injuries led to a Niners sweep of Seattle. In 2007, Holmgren answered. It's 2008, the Niners have upgraded their defense w/Justin Smith and Ray MacDonald coming on, and once again the Seahawks have injury issues...
Matchup: Niners Guard-Center-Guard versus Seahawks DT's and blitzing LB. Have the Niners learned how to pass block the interior, or will JTO be the next Niners QB to leave Seattle with his throwing arm hanging by a thread?
Posted By: carl (13/09/2008 3:41:23 PM)
Comment: MATCH UP: Mike Martz vs Jim Mora Jr. In the 90's I don't think that Mora ever was able to stop/beat Martz. Here's to trend!

Comment: We need to play physical and our OL needs to control this game. If they can open holes for Frank 2006 style, we should be fine against their smaller D. Manusky also needs to unleash the dogs on Hasselbeck. I don't care who is at WR for them, he's a good QB when given time. I'm going with 24-10 Niners ;-)
Posted By: DMC (13/09/2008 2:58:54 PM)
Comment: Thanks Matt. I have a feeling Patrick Willis will get his first NFL intercepton ine tomorrow's game. I expect the team to win this game. Go Niners.
