It's another Win Monday in 49erland, so the players will not be around today. Coach Mike Nolan will hold his day-after-game press conference, beginning at 12:15. I'll update this blog post to reflect his comments shortly thereafter.
In the meantime, here are a couple articles from today's Press Democrat: "Complete victory for Niners" and "Rossum gets call on fourth down."

Several 49ers players will participate tomorrow in the completion of building Habitat for Humanity Silicon Valley's 49th home in Santa Clara. The 49ers are scheduled to contribute their services from 10 a.m. to noon on their day off from football. The DBs are confirmed to be there: Walt Harris, Mark Roman, Donald Strickland, Tarell Brown, Nate Clements, Reggie Smith and Marcus Hudson.
* * *Mike Nolan just held his weekly press conference. There wasn't a whole lot to nitpick after the 49ers' dominating 31-13 victory over the Lions. Here are some of the topics of interest:
--The coaches were scheduled to spend the majority of today preparing for the Saints, as the players are not around.
--On the team's run defense, Nolan said some of it was tackling, some of it was scheme. He said he does not see the team's run defense as a major, major concern moving forward. Nolan said D.C. Greg Manusky is still learning about his players.
--(This is me, one of the things I noticed in watching the game again is that the 49ers' defensive line was very aggressive. They were getting upfield after Jon Kitna. On many of the Lions' good run plays, Rudi Johnson was able to use that aggressiveness against the 49ers).
Nolan said that, yes, the focus of the 49ers' defense was in shutting down the Lions' receivers and getting after Kitna. But, Nolan said, that does not wash completely as an excuse. After all, they should still be able to combat anything the offense does, while also remaining strong in the area of emphasis.
--Harris and Clements had great games, while probably playing a form of man coverage about two-thirds of the time. Second-year player Tarell Brown also played very well. They weren't alone. Isaac Sopoaga had a very good game, getting some push in pass-rush situations. And Nolan said Aubrayo Franklin played better than he did against the Seahawks. When Nolan told the team after the game that he'd wait to watch the film before handing out a defensive game ball, some of the players started shouting, "Cowboy!" That's what they call Justin Smith. He had a very strong game with one sack, one interception and a lot of other plays for the 49ers. Smith missed only one snap, and that was a special-teams play he was supposed to be on.
--Nolan said he had no update on CB Shawntae Spencer, but it sure sounds as if the team expects him to go on IR with a knee injury. (Nolan didn't say this, but apparently Spencer has very loose ligaments, so it's difficult to tell exactly the extent of his injury.)
--On his dynamic with O.C. Mike Martz, Nolan said he lets Martz run the show with 100 percent autonomy. They talk during the course of the week about the plan for the game. But once the game begins, Martz calls the plays and Nolan doesn't suggest run or pass or anything. Nolan said it was his call to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 1, and the play call belonged to Martz.
--Allen Rossum is getting action with the offense a little. He also sees scout team action at cornerback. Nolan said he considers him an emergency player on defense. But Martz might have more in store for him offensively this season.
--When Nolan and Frank Gore spoke after the game, Gore told the coach that he doesn't care if he gets the ball on run plays or pass plays, all he cares about is that the team is moving the ball and scoring points.
--The way Roderick Green and Parys Haralson are playing, there is not a role for Tully Banta-Cain. TBC was inactive for the third straight game to open the season.
--Takeo Spikes did not start at SILB, but he played about three-times more than starter Jeff Ulbrich.
--Nolan said the timing might have been off on O'Sullivan's deep ball to Vernon Davis. Davis failed to haul in the over-the-shoulder attempt. But Nolan said if you get your hands on the ball, you should catch it. Early in the game, Davis dropped a pass near the goal line. But the error on that play belonged to JTO. Davis was wide open for a long period of time. But O'Sullivan did not throw to Davis until he was nearly at the sideline. Moreover, he threw the ball behind Davis. O'Sullivan was too intent on getting the ball to Bruce in the end zone. (On the next play, he threw to Bruce for a TD.)
--Alex Smith has committed to remain with the 49ers through this season even though he's on injured reserve: "IR players typically come in and get their treatment and then they go," Nolan said. "Alex and I spoke at length at the time. Obviously, he was going to be on IR. He asked me, 'What can I do? Because I want to be around here for everything.' So Alex goes to all the meetings. He's responsible for being here all day. Once he decides that, he goes through the entire day, just as if he were on the roster, other than he cannot participate in practice. He goes to practices, stands behind the drills and watches.
"He doesn't go on the road with us, and he doesn't go to the hotel the night before, but he does everything leading up to that, other than practice. That's by his own choice, and I think that's a great decision. I know, like I said all along before Alex got hurt, I think Alex has great trust that the system that's in place is one that he can flourish in, and he's excited about that. Because it's disciplined and detailed. It's kind of the way he things. And it gives him a chance to be successful."
Nolan said Smith has not made a decision on whether to have surgery. When asked if he's talked to Smith about his future, Nolan said, "Not past today. The fact that he wants to work is where we left it. That's a very positive note from his standpoint of wanting to be a real good player, and possibility of being here. Obviously, we'll cross that bridge when we get there."
* * *
Look for the return of the all-53 breakdown tomorrow.
* * *
INJURY UPDATE: LB Jeff Ulbrich (ankle), S Michael Lewis (elbow), S Dashon Goldson (shoulder) and S Keith Lewis (knee) are all expected to be available for Sunday's game.

Comment: Hey Matt, can we get the GM fired? I feel what Scott is doing is a disservice as this is nothing more then the ERickson and Donahue show right now, and they treat Alex SMith like Mariucci was treated. Matt, a real reporter would point out the BS, so why don't you pal around with Tim Kawakami when he confronted the Raiders on their BS with Kiffin? Least Kawakami does a job you don't want to do for the 49ers issue blackouts for the media in don't question NOlan's job adn don't question about Alex SMith. If you can't be a reporter Matt, give it up please. I as a fan want Alex Smith to return as our QB, and if the GM dont' like it, please suggest the 49ers fire him along with Nolan. Alex Smith should be our QB in 09.

Comment: you are welcomed!!..:)...cmon Matt be nice, you know i will always respect you and your work....i am just calling you out on something you started......you know i take the A.Smith story seriously that most others......I believe your opinion and comment before Scotty said anything was A.Smith was not going to play another down for the niners.....didn't you?
Posted By: oneniner (23/09/2008 8:52:02 AM)
Comment: I just think it was obvious there was a "possibility" A.Smith could return looking at the investment already made by the team and his AGE....I would think you would be more cautious in your reporting (knowning how sensitive "we" the fans feel about A.Smith) even if Scot said he wasnt returning as a backup......on another note, you reported previously Martz changes personalities when the regular season starts, during training camp he his more outspoken and during the regular season he his more of a teacher.......have you noticed this change in personality?.....and how often do you see A.Smith talking to Martz - do you see a relationship or non at all?...thanks
Response: More cautious in my reporting? Thanks for the advice. In the future if the GM says a guy is not coming back, I'll be sure to remain cautious and decline to report it. --Matt M.

Comment: Matt, do you know how many defensive plays are called by Manusky and how many are called by Nolan?
Response: Manusky calls the defenses. Nolan is tuned in on the headsets, but Manusky does the play-by-play rhythm. I don't know if Nolan has used his veto power this season on any calls, but I'm sure they talk about the calls for the upcoming series when the 49ers' offense is on the field. --Matt M.

Comment: Matt - no offense but you sound pathetic and unreliable - "It leads me to believe that it's a possibility, however remote it might be.".....now you think there is a possibility after make a big deal about him being released.......cmon, dude you are flip flopping. You shouldn't have jumped to your first conclusion in the first place.
Response: You know who my source is for Smith not returning. As I state every time, GM Scot McCloughan said Smith will not return unless he's the proven starter heading into the offseason. Again, however remote it might be, the fact that Smith is sticking around (and the team does not mind him sticking around) says that the door is cracked open for a Smith return. There's no flip-flopping on my part. I don't get a vote in the matter. --Matt M.

Comment: things are looking up... now if only Nolan could get those 4th down calls right... he really should of kicked a field goal to guarantee that the team was up by 3 scores.

Comment: Matt, would be interesting to find out whether Alex is angling to become Martz's next "pet project." Or whether Martz is developing him as such. It could be really simple, though: there are certainly worse places to spend an IR season than under the tutelage of Mike Martz.

Comment: I believe the Martz philosophy is to piece plays together to see how they are executed. The same seam route to VD has been tried early each game and not revisited. As the weeks wear on, I'm sure the plays that are executed the best will be tried more freguently as 'money' plays. Staley is showing me that he can be bull rushed and needs to work on the technique a little more, he's gonna get killed against Philly and NYG if he doesn't anchor his backside more. He's surviving by running the DE around and JTO is quickly recognizing the collapse and bailing. Sooner or later the competition will scheme to exploit the weakness and close the escape door. All in all, good team WIN and it serves to build confidence for the tougher schedule stretch we hit now. I think VD is more of a threat in the slot personally, but route running may be his achilles heel? I see him feasting on the slant with his speed, but he's not a very good open field runner and is shy about initiating contact in the open field for some reason. Hoping for continued improvement of course, and so far, there's a lot to be optimistic about.

Comment: O'Sullivan a free agent after this year? I don't imagine Scott Mc is that naive to let him go especially if the team makes the playoffs or wildcard. O'Sullivan is 29, the Niners can get 9-10 more years of production from him. Quarterbacks go well into their 30's provided they dont sustain injuries.

Comment: Matt, Thanks for all your hard work and great insight. A. Smith's decision to remain involved with the team is interesting. As you have stated before, there is a chance that O'Sullivan leaves as a free agent next year. Does Smith's desire to remain involved lead you to believe that there is a decent chance that he would be willing to return to the Niners at a reduced salary?
Response: It leads me to believe that it's a possibility, however remote it might be. Those talks won't take place until after the season, so we'll see if both sides are open to making something happen. --Matt M.

Comment: SKA, it wouldn't be so bad (irritating) if he didn't do the pound the chest thing after EVERY catch. It was Jerry Rice (I believe) who said...act like you've done it before. Gore makes a long run and then gets up, goes back to the huddle. Davis makes his 1 catch of the game and starts acting like T.O...2 good TE might be to hard to keep on the roster. If so, we could see the #1 picks in '05 AND '06 leave the team. That's hard to accept...

Comment: JTO and VD will hook up sooner than later. Watch out when they are on the same page. They are already stretching the field. VD is a manchild and he will get better and will be a scary sight running full steam at DB. This team has the ability and will just get better with each game. During our heyday with the BW teams we were never statisfied. This is what I like about with these guys. I'm still taking in win number two and the excitiment that is starting to buzz around the 49ers. The 49ers can win in New Orleans but this will not be easy...

Comment: Hi Matt, You should be in line for a raise from Press Democrat. The next few weeks will tell what kind of team we have. Nolan's defense has started slow each year and tightened up as the season wore on. As for the offense, well we all know that story till now, this offense can only get better. What about Jason Hill? Will he get any pt.

Comment: There were so many good plays on both sides of the ball that there are probably too many to mention. Some of my favorites: Josh Morgan getting the catch approx. 18 yards downfield. Dashon Goldson coming up quickly to make the hard hit on receiver as soon as he caught the ball (limited to short gain). Think the Niners were blitzing a corner on that play too and it seemed Goldson was picking up the uncovered receiver (they had problems with that a couple times last year). JTO's tenacious demeanor, especially when he got horse-collared. Believe he had a few choice words for the the tackler immediately after. The incomplete pass to Vernon Davis deep over the middle because he was wide open and JTO makes that throw count next time. Defenses will have to account for VD on the field even if he can't catch. Arnaz Battle running that reverse because he ran it hard, full speed, no juking, no fear. Vernon Davis should run like that with the ball and lower the boom.

Comment: QB Guru - I will agree with you there. Sick of hearing VD talk about how great he is. Start doing it or shut up. But to be fair I heard just a little of that at the beginning of training camp and have not heard any since. Maybe I have missed something.

Comment: Over at the NFC West blog on ESPN, they mentioned that SF has a good chance of beating both New Orleans and New England in the coming weeks. If that does in fact happen, the fans are going to be so pumped up can you imagine how much the atmosphere will change at Candlestick? It could bring back the days when teams hated coming into SF to play... let's hope so.

Comment: i know man-law was drafted because of his great speed, but he is obviously having a hard time fighting through traffic to get to the q.b. P-harl has shown the ability to get to the q.b. and so has r-green. some players may not have the great combine numbers such as lawson and v.d. but as been proven by p-harl and r-green they are flat-out 'ballers.' r-green also showed up last year when he was given a chance to play, i think its time to give him more opportunities since he has a knack for getting in the backfield.

Comment: Nice win for the 49ers. Great offensive game plan by Martz, who kept the Lions D off balance most of the game. I don't think I've seen a 3 play, 70 plus yard drive for ten years. I really liked how Martz put the game in Gores hands once they had the lead in the second half. That's what you do when you have an elite RB, and Martz has figured it out. I did disagree with going on 4th and 1, and still think they should have played the percentages when up more than 2 TDs, but they got a bit lucky, and Rossum made a play and got the ball inside the pylon. All that said, this was the Lions, one of the two worst teams in the NFL . And they played like it to. Dropped balls, stupid penalties, missed assignments all over the field. But the 49ers did what good teams do to bad teams, they buried them. I still have concerns with O'Sullivan scrambling all over the place and not hook sliding. Its obvious that he is one of the two key players on this offense, and the 49ers need to keep him healthy. Also, I agree with the shootme, the run defense has looked pretty bad at times. Yesterday Rudi Johnson was gashing our D for some nice gains well before the 4th quarter prevent defense drive that gave the Lions their only TD. If the 49ers are to have any chance against some of the quality teams they will be facing in the next month, this can't continue. But I will be happy with the win, and basking in back to back games of 30 plus on the board. The next four weeks will tell a lot. I will be happy with 2-2 and coming out 4 - 3 with 8 of the remaining 9 games being very winnable. If we can do that, and avoid any major injuries to JTO, Gore, or a few others, 9 - 7 or maybe even 10 - 6 doesn't not seem as far fetched as it did 2 weeks ago. By the way, anyone hear form Darren11?

Comment: SKA...For the $ they're paying Davis, yeah too many drops. I'm frankly tired of hearing about his "freakish" skills. I want to see some results. He makes 1 catch, pounds his chest, tells everyone he's the man...then it's opps, dropped pass.

Comment: Man that's great stuff Matt. Thanks for the explanation on VD's throws his way. I thought the blame was on him. With all the flack he gets including from me I'm glad it all wasn't on him. I'm bracing for the news on Spencer, it doesn't sound good but opens it up for more PT for Brown. Good call by McNolan on keeping the high number of DB's. Is Strickland returning this week? JSmith is awesome & worth every penny so far. Did he get the game ball? On the Smith saga..I'm for his chance has been had here & it's time to go. But he's been quiet & at the same time loyal & showing such drive to learn this system. Who knows maybe he'll take a pay cut as a backup to learn from a mind who really knows his craft? Got to admire Smith's actions, if it were me I would have asked to be released away from Nolan in a heartbeat.

Comment: Matt, it looks like Banta-Cain has been in the dog house since training camp. Why didn't the niners release him before the season to save cap space?
Response: They saved cap space by renegotiating his deal. They want him on the team, but they believe Green and Haralson are able to contribute more right now. --Matt M.

Comment: QB Guru - Walker is sure handed? Yesterday was by far his best game and best catch. I think he had more drops than almost any receiver last year. Maybe not more because he didn't get as many opportunities . . . but I would be shocked if he didn't have the highest percentage of dropped passes on the team last year. He is terrific at getting open and it was great to see him catch the ball yesterday as ALL of their receivers are doing a much better job of. I think people need to chill out on Vernon Davis. Lets let him play and judge him at the end of the season. I think he has been very valuable as a blocker so far, much more so than Walker and I think the team needs him to keep being a team player and good blocker. The offense is still finding itself and as long as they are moving the ball and enjoying success I would think he will be ok with that. I also think Martz is going to spring him on one of these next few teams . . . New England perhaps . . . and game plan a whole game for him to come up huge. NE's old linebackers don't have a chance of covering him.
Posted By: ZURDO (22/09/2008 2:39:13 PM)
Comment: Matt, any chance we might release A. Smith, V. Davis and J. Jennings all before next season to open up cap space? Jennings and Davis have really be unable to perform to what has been expected of them. Honestly, if he (VD) cant perform in Martz system he's not worth the salary we paying him.
Response: After this season, I'd suspect Smith and Jennings will not be back at their scheduled salaries. Davis is very affordable, so there's no reason to do anything with his deal. --Matt M.

Comment: Matt, Delaine Walker has been solid from last year all the way up to this point. Do envision his role becoming larger than Vernon Davis this year? Vernon Davis has problems catching the ball, and seems lost out on the field.
Posted By: boridge (22/09/2008 1:26:45 PM)
Comment: Let me try to address the Vernon Davis questions in a way that reflects how I THINK Matt would address them - Vernon is a physical specimen who is still very raw when it comes to route running and catching. That said, he's one of the premier blockers in this league at his position. If you look at many of Gore's long runs you will see that VD plays a key blocking role. It's very possible that VD will "mature" into a more complete player as he gains experience. Regardless, given his importance to this teams running scheme, it wouldn't be right to insinuate VD as a bust (a la Alex Smith).

Comment: Matt,
Although as you stated the D-line was agressive in getting up in the Lions backfield I still don't see the 49ers getting enough sacks in my opinion. I know it's still early in the season but from what I've seen so far I don't see anybody on the defensive front 7 that has the ability to get the QB ground consistantly enough. Is it just me? With the next 4 games against Playoff Teams I think it's vital that the 49ers get alot more production in the sack category if they have any chance of winning these games. Your thoughts?

Comment: This just in... Justin Smith is a beast. Without dominating the stats line, he seems to be able to disrupt opponents on a regular basis. His late pick was incredible. Matt, I would love to hear Martz insight on what kind of troubles a Justin Smith presents to an O coordinator in game planning.
I agree that the 9ers need to figure out how to get VD to focus on his craft. He is growing into an high priced blocking tight end & they don't last long in this league.

Comment: "The FOX crew covering Sunday's Lions-49ers game mentioned that Josh Morgan lost 15 pounds while battling a flu virus over the past month." -- Any validity to that, Matt?

Comment: One other thing... Live it was even better, but in reviewing the game later (thanks DVR) I saw Jeff Ulbrich take on a lead blocker (FB presumably) and then shed him as soon as he saw the runner, and make the tackle... All I can say is that Jeff Ulbrich was all MAN on that play... I hope that gets played over and over again in film study, because that was AWESOME and Jeff deserves his "props" for that one!

Comment: Hey Matt. Happy Win Monday!
What are your thoughts on Tarell Brown? Seeing that he filled in quite nicely on Sunday, can we expect the same (and better) production from him the rest of the season?

Comment: Matt - I was in Vegas this weekend heading to the airport when my taxi driver told me he used to play for the 49ers. He said he was a backup linebacker for the Niners from 1980-1989 or 1990. His name was Doug Carriker and he said he went to UCLA. I don't recall the name, but I did a few minutes of research and couldn't find anything.
Is there anyone on the inside you can ask to confirm that Mr. Carriker is who he said he is? Thanks.

Comment: sean- what games are you watching? there has been a deep throw to vernon davis as part of the offensive game plan in each of the games this year. martz has specifically tried to get VD involved in the gameplan by targeting mismatches. maybe you missed the part where he actually caught one ball and decided to avoid the defender instead of running through him, or maybe you saw him come down with a case of the alligator arms when a safety rolls over to defend a pass, or maybe it was all the dropped balls he should have caught easily. hell they had a TD in this last game over the top and he just flat out dropped the catch. he comes back to the huddle grinning like a little kid. what a waste of a talent so far. he's a great blocker which we didn't expect, but jesus i have never seen someone with such size and speed, yet so fearful of contact after the catch (or in his case, drop).

Comment: Was fortunate enough to have decent tickets and get invited to tailgate with fans who have had season tickets for 30+ years, and have tailgated together for 20+ years... Despite the obnoxious poor play calling arguments from a pair of fans behind me, and the missed opportunities, that was one of the best games I have seen since Steve retired! Yes, VD dropped a pair of would be TDs, and yes Michael Lewis got his hips almost broken taking a bad angle on Rudi Johnson, but you know what, those being the worst things to point out... this is one of the happiest I have been with a 9er game in a long time! Oh yeah, and that guy that ran out on the field should have been taken out a lot harder... that was disappointing too! HAHAHA.

Comment: MM - Did Baas replace Snyder for most of the 2nd half? If so, was this due to an injury or a benching?

Comment: Thanks again for your work Matt. It was fun to watch the team not just win, but dominate a lesser opponent. It appeared to me that Balmer was on the field more. When he was drafted, I was really hopeful that he could be a dominant NT. I wanted to see him plugging up the middle and freeing up Willis ala Kelly Greg or Jamal Lewis. My question is: how is Balmer progressing? I am hoping that you can focus some of your expert analysis on this issue during throughout the season. It would be great if you could get some idea of what Manusky and the coaches are thinking of his development. I see the NT/DT as the weakest link on this D. Balmer has the physical talent to fulfill this need. Does it look like Balmer is developing into a starter on the D line?

Comment: Matt could you please interview VD and find out why he can not produce but every 5 yard catch is all about him? We do not need another TO. Thanks.

Comment: Hey Matt, I know this is off topic, but do you think we should be worried about the stadium situation? I for one will be worried if things don't get resolved in Santa Clara soon. I don't want the Yorks saying "sorry, we tried" and then taking their ball and going home. Thanks Matt.

Comment: All I can say is Im so happy I dont have to watch "The cowardly lion" Alex loose games and miss oppurtunities. Its great to see JTO give us a reason to watch again.Alex was a bum face it,even when healthy hes never been able to do what JTO has the last three games.God Im sorry but Alice Smith is the worst move the Niners have ever made.Nice kid,but Im so glad I dont have to see that scrambling, scared little boy #11 run around for no reason and misfire all over the place.See ya Alex, you wont be missed.

Comment: Hey Matt,
If you have the opportunity (and the nerve...) you might very politely ask Joe Staley why he keeps getting knocked on his can.....

Comment: Matt, I'd be interested in hearing a bit more on what you've touched on as far as the attitude and confidence of the team. It sounds as if they are starting to believe they can win, or maybe even expecting it. Also, what do you think Vernon Davis' feelings are about being used as a blocker so much and not getting the ball as much as I'm sure he'd like? Is he a guy that will be happy as long as the team is winning whether he's blocking or catching passes?

Comment: Hey Matt here's another interesting stat for you: JTO ranks 2nd in rushing yards by a QB in the league, second to Aaron Rodgers.

Comment: First. I'm now optimstic about this team. They should put up a good fight to win the NFC West. Matt, what about Vernon Davis? I'm ready to label him a bust. He won't sell out for a ball. They went to him (3 times?) deep on the seam rout and he dropped 2 I think? He deserved the boos he got yesterday. He looks like a player, great on paper, he just can't play. What is Martz saying about him.

Comment: I'll have to hand it to this team. They make their mistakes each week, then they come back the following week with those mistakes corrected. I feel each week this team stays healthey, they'll also get better & better all around. I like the shape this team is turning into.

Comment: Mr. Matt, is it just me or does V. Davis fail to make plays when necessary? I mean, he doesn't come up with those "big" grabs. Walker is really sure handed. Is it possible that the 49ers end up with 2 "high 1st rd picks" fizzing out?
