Niners' post-practice (for Pats) update

There are no changes to the 49ers' injury report. LB Manny Lawson, T Jonas Jennings and CB Shawntae Spencer are still out.

As reported yesterday, the 49ers have no plans right now to fill Spencer's spot on the roster because there simply is no void that needs to be filled. The 49ers began the season carrying more defensive backs that normal.

When asked yesterday if this was a money issue, Nolan said, "No, not at all."

However, the 49ers are also saving money (and salary-cap room) by not filling the roster spot. They're saving anywhere from $17,350 a week (for a rookie or first-year player) to $48,820 a week (for a player with 10-plus years of experience) by not filling the roster spot.

LB Tully Banta-Cain's chances of suiting up for Sunday's game against his former team are "better than favorable," Nolan said.

With Lawson out, Parys Haralson will start at OLB. Haralson is capable of playing all three downs. When Haralson needs a rest, Banta-Cain is likely to take over.

Nolan on the Bill Belichick-Mike Martz matchup: "Both he and Mike, when they go against each other, will try to figure out some little wrinkles to show one another."

From the 49ers' PR department . . . The 49ers' offense is 97.2 yards better per game than last season. The last team with that large of an increase (over a full season) was Martz's 121.3 improvement with the 1999 St. Louis Rams. . . . J.T. O'Sullivan ranks among the top deep passers in the NFL after four games. On passes thrown 21 yards or longer in the air, O'Sullivan has completed 62.5 percent and has a passer rating of 127.1. O'Sullivan is 10 of 16 for 318 yards and a touchdown on those passes.

From the desk of the great Lisa Goodwin in the community relations department . . . The 49ers announced Bernadette Dutra, founder and president of OneChild, is the winner of the 2008 49ers Community Quarterback Award. In honor of her contributions to the community, NFL Charities will present a $10,000 grant to Dutra today at a team luncheon in San Mateo hosted by former 49ers quarterback Steve Bono.

Comment: JTO is a QB in the NFL. If he can't take the heat. Get out the kitchen.

Comment: Matt I haven't had a pc for about 2 weeks now what happened to Manny Lawson? And is Shawntae Spencer on IR or is he day to day? Thanks

Comment: Hardcorefonz, there was interest in Garcia before the season, but there haven't been trade talks since. I don't think it would work now anyway -- it's not like Philly or Tampa where Garcia basically already knew the offence. I think JTO is doing fine. We're competetive. We still need a better coach.

Comment: A win would be gratifying against a hall of fame coach and an elite franchise.

Comment: Great point, Randy. We now have the talent to open it up on D. and start dictating to the O's we face...but oh no, not under Mike Nowin we don't. Vanilla defense...yuck. I still haven't gotten over the D tactics for the Seahawks game. They had their top 4 WR's out...then Seneca Wallace pulls up in warm-ups...so what does Mike Nowin do? Play in the nickel for most of the game. Unbelievable. Fortunately, the O pulled out the win for us. But, allowing the 'Hawks to run up 169 yards on the ground at 5 yds per pop is certainly not smart. But hey, no-one (NO-ONE!) has ever (EVER!) accused Mike Nowin of being smart.

Comment: Here is a good quote for you all that wanted to draft Groves. He has been a BUST thus far in Jacksonville: "I thought it was going to be somewhat like college, but then I got into the heat of the fire and realized that you can't just make one move to get through these guys," Groves said in a phone chat this week, echoing what thousands of linemen have said before him. "You've got to make two or three moves and continue to rush the passer if you are going to get there. That's the thing I am getting better at week by week."

Comment: Matt, Can you please tell Manusky to blitz more? The two times I watched Willis and Spikes blitz against NO, I watched Brees take a hard shot, while the ball fell incomplete. Our talent in the secondary should afford us more blitzing opportunities... Time to unleash the D, Manusky. The Faithful would love to see it.

Comment: Can I just say how cool it is to be able to cheer for a QB named JTO!!

Comment: Matt, How true are the rumors of Tampa and 49ers working on a trade for Jeff Garcia?

Posted By: Mike in SF #1 (02/10/2008 5:00:49 PM)
Comment: Dont blame JT for the red zone performance. We have a RB averaging 5 YPC and Martz chose to throw repeatedly in the red zone. I know we were playing from behind last week, but once in the red zone the opportunity to run the ball returned and Martz chose to put the teams fate on the back of O'Sulivan. Dumb.

Comment: Freddy - He has one off game. Get over it. We have not had QB play this good in San Francisco since Garcia was under center. Its like some of you forget what was going on at the QB position in SF since 2004.

Comment: you so called niner fans are unfreakin believable. You dont want aAlex you love JT, JT throws two picks and now you bag on him. I am a diehard niner fan since 81. I have not missed one game in that time., and I have to say that after five years I am finally excited to watch this team again. Sit back and have some fun. This team is the best we have had in five years, and JT is one of the biggest reasons

Comment: Thank god your blog readers don't run the 49ers. These are the same guys who would have sent Lincecum back down after he got bombed by the Phillies in his first ML start. Go here: (http://www.nfl.com/players/jeffgarcia/gamelogs?id=GAR101861&season=1999) and look at Jeff Garcia's game logs from the 1999 season. He was 29 when he became a NFL starter too, and became a very good NFL QB. Through 4 games, O'Sullivan compares more than favorably, and there's nothing to suggest he won't be performing at a pretty high level by the end of the season. Be patient. It's not O'Sullivan's fault that he needs to play great for the team to be good. Think about it...

Comment: One of the best deep passers in the game? How about the fact that he sucks in the red zone. Just venting! Sorry Matt.

Response: I don't have JTO's numbers in the red zone. But the 49ers rank 21st in red-zone offense. They've had 14 red-zone possessions and scored 61 points, with six TDs and six FGs. That's a 42.9 TD percentage, and an 85.7 scoring pct. --Matt M.
