INJURY REPORT
C Eric Heitmann (right leg) is expected to miss 3 to 4 months after undergoing surgery on a broken tibia. He remained in a Seattle hospital, where he is likely to remain until Sunday.
TE Eric Johnson (left knee), LB Derek Smith (left hamstring), OT Adam Snyder (right ankle/knee) all missed Thursday's game, but Mike Nolan said he is hopeful they'll all be ready for the Dec. 24 game against the Cardinals.
LB Jay Foreman sustained a right knee sprain and his availability for the 49ers' game on Dec. 24 is not known at this time.
* * *
Just like I said: Expect Alex Smith to struggle -- for the first three quarters.
Because of the quick turnaround and all my regular day-after-game duties, I haven't been able to put together a full game recap. But I did get this email from people at the NFL. It's a recap of the broadcast on the NFL Network.
You won't read about the mistakes Bryant Gumbel made during the telecast, such as mispronouncing Billy Bajema's name, twice calling 49ers RB "Al" Gore or OL David "Bass" or punter Andy "Smith."
So if you weren't able to watch the game, here's what you missed:
* * *
PRE-KICKOFF
"We were going to play 'Raindrops Keeping Falling on My Head', but I think 'Watching the River Flow' may be more appropriate."
-Bryant Gumbel on the weather
"What's the Caddyshack line? 'I don't think the heavy stuff is coming in for some time'."
-Cris Collinsworth joking about the weather in Seattle, where the forecast calls for worsening conditions later in the evening
"We always know that the champion makes the challenger wait, but this is ridiculous."
-Gumbel on waiting for Seahawks to take the field after a brief delay
* * *
FIRST QUARTER
"I'm thinking about six or seven."
-Collinsworth answering Gumbel's question as to how many turnovers he expects in the weather conditions
"Can I adjust it to eight or nine?"
-Collinsworth after a near interception moments later
"We had heard that he was a very good wet-ball thrower. I guess that's one of the prerequisites if you're going to be the quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks."
-Collinsworth on Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck
BOOTH EXCHANGE
"What happens is your arms get slimy." -Collinsworth on playing in wet conditions
"Your arms get slimy?" -Gumbel
"I'll try to use smaller words next time." -Collinsworth
* * *
"He looks like he's thinking about this wet ball when he drops back now. I can almost see it in his eyes."
-Collinsworth on 49ers quarterback Alex Smith
* * *
"There is some conflict of opinion as to whether D.J. Hackett doesn't belong in the starting lineup for the Seattle Seahawks. That's not just from one or two players and coaches. A lot of people think that despite all the big money (contracts of) [Nate] Burleson and Deion Branch and Darrell Jackson, this kid belongs in the game"
-Collinsworth on Seahawks receiver D.J. Hackett
* * *
"Walt Harris has been a tremendous asset for this 49ers team."
-Collinsworth
* * *
"You're not hearing a love chant here. That's a boo."
-Collinsworth on fans reaction to Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens not catching a pass
* * *
"We don't want to know what is happening on the bottom of that pile."
-Gumbel following a scramble for the ball after a Shaun Alexander fumble
Seahawks 7, 49ers 0
* * *SECOND QUARTER
"I'd take Jay Cutler."
-Collinsworth noting that he'd take the Broncos rookie quarterback before fellow rookies Matt Leinart, Vince Young and last year's #1 pick Alex Smith
* * *
"Everything in the world went right for this guy. He was a magical guy. Universally around the NFL, a guy who is so respected. People cared so much for him."
-Collinsworth on late Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt
* * *
"Without question, with his numbers."
-Collinsworth on whether 49ers defensive tackle Bryant Young was headed to the Hall of Fame before he broke his leg in 1999
* * *
"You have to consider what they've done this season and the number of ways they can beat you. They can hit you in so many different areas of the field."
-Collinsworth on the New Orleans Saints
* * *
"He is going to be more and more a part of this offense."
-Collinsworth on Seahawks receiver D.J. Hackett
* * *
BOOTH EXCHANGE
"Guys that talk a lot they want you to think that they're confident. But if they're really confident, they don't have to talk so much. I bet Marshall Faulk didn't say two words his entire career out there on the field. He just went out there and whipped you."
-Collinsworth players "talking" on the field
"On the other hand, Deion [Sanders] probably did." -Gumbel
"I was going to use Deion, but I didn't think that was a good idea." -Collinsworth
* * *
"I never got a chance to play against Deion, but I would've enjoyed it-even if he would have shut me out." -Collinsworth
"If he would have shut you out?" -Gumbel (as Collinsworth laughed)
* * *
"Holiday greetings being what they are."
-Gumbel on disagreement between players (personal foul called on one player from each club)
* * *
"It's [Tony] Romo and weather together on the 1s."
-Rich Eisen previewing the Wendy's Halftime Show
* * *
Halftime Score: Seahawks 7, 49ers 3
* * *
THIRD QUARTER
"If they just had a couple more coffee shops in town. I think you could take an entire tour of Seattle and never go outside, just go from one coffee shop to the next."
-Collinsworth joking about Seattle prior to second-half kickoff
"We have just seen another sloppy half of football, which has become our wont on Thursday night. It begs the question - at the risk of biting the hand that feeds us -- [about] the Thursday night schedule. We have heard coaches gripe about it. All the coaches tell us that it's less a matter of mental preparation than physical preparation. Are we seeing evidence of it in the sloppy games that we are seeing?"
-Gumbel on Thursday night games
"We have seen it for years on Thanksgiving. It has been a big part of it. It's always the deal that if you are the home team and win you get 10 days off afterwards. I would prefer to see these games played earlier in the season for a lot of reasons. One - It's easier on the players. Two - All the games would be more significant."
-Collinsworth on Thursday night games
"He's earned that money-It's really one of the tough parts of being a general manager in the NFL."
-Collinsworth on Shaun Alexander following last season's performance and his subsequent long-term contract (after graphic about 30-year old rushers)
"I kind of hold my breath every time the ball comes to him."
-Collinsworth on Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens
Seahawks 7, 49ers 3
* * *
FOURTH QUARTER
"Sometimes when things get tight, he wants to scramble to his right. In college that's the kind of thing that can work. In the NFL, most linebackers are faster than the quarterback. You end up cutting the field in half and not having much room to operate."
-Collinsworth on 49ers quarterback Alex Smith
"Alex Smith is the best I've ever seen him. That drive is the best I saw."
-Collinsworth on Alex Smith's TD drive early in the quarter
"That's what I like about him, he blocks."
-Collinsworth on 49ers rookie tight end Vernon Davis
"Persnickety."
-Gumbel on how he'd describe 49ers wide receiver Antonio Bryant
"One of the best plays I have seen this season. What a second-half he has had!"
-Collinsworth on Alex Smith's rollout touchdown pass to give 49ers a 17-7 lead.
"One thing that's not a pleasant thing is to get in a conversation with Seahawks fans about the officials, of course after the Super Bowl."
-Collinsworth after a play where defensive pass interference was not called
"I don't think anybody could have anticipated the impact that Frank Gore was going to have on the NFL this season."
-Collinsworth on 49ers running back Frank Gore
"This has been a disaster. To lose at Arizona last week and to turn around at home against San Francisco and get beat again. A horrible offensive performance by the Seahawks tonight."
-Collinsworth on Seahawks
Final Score: 49ers 24, Seahawks 14

Comment: I thought the best/funniest comment of the night came from Collinsworth about his visiting his superbowl rings everytime he goes to SF. You wouldn't happen to have those quotes by any chance?

Comment: I would like to reiterate Michael's question - What's up with Baas?
Posted By: Michael (15/12/2006 6:24:34 PM)
Comment: Didn't you mention in a previous entry that Wragge was the backup at left guard and Baas was the backup center and right guard. So much for the comments from Nolan he has been doing better? Wragge has played well just curious about Baas.

Comment: Man Bret & Ernie are horrible to listen to.

Comment: Sorry to complain; but your weekly, useful, bloganalyses (in this space) is much preferred to than any media rehash of Chris Collingsworthless. Glad to hear the 9ers played more nickel than dime if they were going to do anything "special." Their dime based on current personnel isn't worth a peso of "prevention". Ulbrich started and the 9ers win. Will wonders never cease? With Spencer back and the DL, Harris, Lewis, Moore reasserting, maybe not. VD = ugh, not that. Maybe "very demonstrative?" 2006. Swept Seahawks. Does that sound GREAT or what? 8 more quarters like yesterday's 4th and ...

Comment: I take Starkey and Plummer, but I hate that 8 second delay.

Comment: Yeah, eventually just turned off the sound. Thoroughly enjoyed the game after that.
