Mike Nolan will be allowed to wear a suit on the sideline for each of the 49ers' eight home games, an NFL spokesman said today.
"We've agreed to coach Nolan's request," said Brian McCarthy, the NFL's director of corporate communications. "He told us he was looking (to wear the suit) for the eight home games."
The issue generated a lot of conversation among 49ers fans in the past week, as Nolan said he had been told that he could wear a suit on the sideline for only two games this season. He and Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio wore suits during two games last season, too.
McCarthy emphasized it is the NFL that determines the policy for what coaches wear on the sideline. Nolan said last week that he was under the impression it was Reebok making the decision. Reebok pays the NFL a reported $250 million to be the clothing supplier for the league.
Shortly after the issue resurfaced last week, 49ers fans began showing their support for Nolan. On this blog, a person identifying himself as "ninerfan21" first suggested fans wear suits for the 49ers' season-opening Monday night game against the Cardinals on Sept. 10. It was an idea that gained a lot of momentum in short period of time.
So why did the NFL decide to change its policy?
"Commissioner (Roger) Goodell took a harder look at it and he supported the issue," McCarthy said. "In recognition of Nolan's desire to salute and honor his father, we expanded (the policy) to meet his request."
Nolan's father, Dick, was a head coach for 11 seasons, including eight with the 49ers. He led the 49ers to their first three division titles. Like many of the coaches of yesteryear, Dick Nolan wore a suit and tie on the sideline.
Recently, Dick has fallen on hard times. He has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and lives in an assisted-living facility in Texas for patients dealing with dementia. He also suffers from prostate cancer.
Nolan is does not plan to wear a suit during the exhibition season. He asked to wear the suit for the eight home games, instead of the full 16-game regular season, as a compromise, a 49ers spokesman said.
When Nolan was hired as coach of the 49ers in January 2005, he informed the league of his desire to be allowed to wear a suit on the sideline. According to McCarthy, it was "too late in the cycle" for the league to do anything for that season.
Nolan and Del Rio worked with Reebok to design suits to be worn for two games apiece last season.
During the league meeting in March, the league asked the remaining coaches if they had any desire to wear suits. Nobody chose to join Nolan and Del Rio, although Nolan said last week 49ers assistant head coach Mike Singletary would like to wear a suit when he becomes a head coach.

Comment: I just saw that Jacksonville released Donovin Darius. Is he a candidate to be signed to a relatively affordable contract? He certainly has some gas left in the tank, is still a productive player, and would provide invaluable experience to the secondary. Just one fan's thoughts...

Comment: Matt,
It's nice to hear your father doing better espicially with Father's Day coming up this weekend. It's a new era in sports media, and what I mean by that is the "Blog". Matt I really feel that the power of "blogging" was a major factor in getting the suit issue somewhat resolved. Who knew when you started this that it would be so powerful? I think this just the 1st stepping stone in how "blogging" can only get bigger & more popular. I think it's going to be a big part of Pop Culture from here on out now!

Comment: Hi Matt, nice to see you blogging again, hope everything is going well with your family. Now that Nolan has been granted permission to wear suits, there's been some sense of accomplishment within the 49er faithful. Accompanying that, some of us (well, a very small amount) are beginning to ask "So do we have to still wear suits too?" Continuing co2112 comments below, could you broach Coach Nolan with the idea of having say a dollar be donated to an Alzheimer's charity for every person who enters the gate wearing a suit? Surely that'll be a worthwhile cause to have people still suit up now that Nolan has got his way. Best wishes again.

Comment: Well, I'm really glad to hear that the league has changed its mind on the issue. Mike Nolan looks darn good wearing a suit on the sideline. Also, I'm even more pleased to hear that your father is doing better, Matt. Thanks for taking the time to make this post after dealing with your own family issues, especially since you noted you wouldn't be going back to work until tomorrow.

Comment: Matt, all those emails and calls by Niner fans to Reebok executives are what got the job done. C-level execs don't like their brand name being trashed. Some VP at Reebok called this lazy-a$ NFL dweeb, and told him to turn off the heat by putting out this press release. .....and that's the rest of thr story!

Comment: Being a season ticket holder the fans continue to support Nolan, and the faithful will still support Nolan and I myself will also be wearing in the least a nice Blazer. As one fan posted on the 49ers MB we would like to also make the Monday Night home opener a donation night for the coats and give back to the community. I wish this will be our next goal or in the very least have a donation night for Alzheimers research. Thanks - Faithful

Comment: Those of us who will attend the Niners' season opener Sept. 10 should still wear a suit/sport coat. Not in protest, but as a salute to Nolan. Good guy. Good coach. Good son. I've been a season ticket holder for 27 years -- attended all five Super Bowls. Until Nolan arrived, it was getting pretty grim around here. He has brought the Niners new respect and given us fans new hope for that sixth Lombardi trophy. I tip my top hat to him. Maybe I'll even break out my tux!

Comment: This is great news and glad to see the league could work something out. Also Matt would there be anyway possible of contacting the 49ers and trying to set up something for the Alzheimer's Association at the 49ers home opener? I think it would be a great way to show support for the Nolan's and bring awareness to the disease.

Comment: This is awesome news!! Thanks again Matt for all the up to the minute Niner info. Some of us Niner Fans also took the liberty of contacting Reebok directly to protest what we thought was a refusal on their part. I hope that somehow got through to the right people. Regardless, Congrats to Coach Nolan and WAY TO GO NINER EMPIRE!!! We are on our way back to being the envy of every organization and fanbase in the NFL!

Comment: Matt - This is really awesome to see this happen. Nolan is truly brining back a "First Class" attitude back to the 49ers. Will you be waring a suit to all of the 49er home games this year as well?

Comment: Matt, ninerfan21 is a member over at 49ers Webzone. I think you can contact him there.

Comment: Thanks for the info Matt. I am sitting here at my computer watching the lackluster Giants and came to see if anything new on the Niners was up. Of course, you have all of the news and I appreciate it. This is awesome news for Nolan and the NFL. I hope that other coaches join him in his quest to wear a suit for every game. Do you think that this is a breakthrough and could lead to a full 16 game suit wearing spree next year? Glad to see your father is doing well, best wishes.
