Receiver Darrell Jackson, acquired this offseason in a trade with the Seahawks, is doing what the 49ers' athletic trainers tell him. Jackson has not practiced running routes with the 49ers this offseason because he is on the trainers' timetable.
But his absence from drills is not entirely just a precaution. His hyper-extended left big toe (aka turf toe) does not seem to be anywhere near 100 percent.
"I feel it," Jackson said. "I always feel it."
When asked if he expects to be ready for the opening of training camp, Jackson said, "I expect to play now, but I'm following their timetable and doing what's best for me."
The 49ers' first practice of training camp is scheduled for July 29.
Jackson and the 49ers' other new veteran receiver, Ashley Lelie, have not done much this offseason due to injuries. Lelie sustained a quadriceps strain on one of the first routes he ran in the team's first minicamp. He has rarely seen the field since.
Jackson does not seem too concerned with the time he is losing with quarterback Alex Smith.
"His job is to hit the open receiver and my job is to run the route and get open," Jackson said today. "As far as chemistry and having the same timing, that'll come as the year goes on."
As far as building an on-field rapport between QB and WR, Jackson said, "That comes time. You don't get it in one day; you don't get it in one week; you don't get it in a training camp. It comes over time. Some people pick it up early, and some people it takes two or three years to develop chemistry."
Jackson sustained the injury Dec. 10 in a Seahawks game against the Cardinals. He was inactive for the final three regular-season games.

Coach Mike Nolan likes the idea of 49ers fans showing up in business suits for the team's regular-season opener, a Monday night game Sept. 10 against the Cardinals. The idea was first suggested on this blog by Jared Hall, 23, of Ashland, Ore., who identifies himself as "ninerfan21." It was first intended as a protest aimed at Reebok.
Now, the idea is seen as more of a tribute to Nolan and his ailing father, Dick. The NFL and Reebok on Wednesday granted Nolan permission to wear a suit on the sideline for all eight 49ers home games.
"If they're louder because of it, that would great," Nolan said when asked if he'd like to see fans wearing suits. "Whatever excites the fan, I'm all for. Like I said, my focus is on winning games this fall. Anything that generates enthusiasm and participation in the game and all that, is great. It's part of the fan experience."
Nolan said he wants to wear a suit to show his "respect for the NFL, the 49ers and the coaches who have done it in the past." The movement gained a lot of support, in light of the news that Nolan's father, a head coach for 11 NFL seasons, is battling Alzheimer's disease and prostate cancer.
"It's not directed solely because of my father," Nolan said. "I love my father. My father knows that. I don't need to do something like this to prove it.

When asked why he's being allowed to wear a suit for just the eight home games and not the entire 16-game regular season, Nolan said, "We'll see. - I don't think you need to do much any more. We'll see."

There's nothing new to report on trade talks involving Kwame Harris and Justin Smiley. Nolan said the team is not shopping either of those players. "It's our anticipation and hope they that they'll be with us this fall, and hopefully longer," Nolan said.

Cornerback B.J. Tucker is scheduled to get an MRI examination on a pectoral muscle he hurt Tuesday. The team fears Tucker sustained a tear to the muscle, which would require major surgery. "It doesn't look good, but we'll see," coach Nolan said.

Tight end Delanie Walker did not participate in practice today for personal reasons. Kwame Harris (back), Donald Strickland (knee), Darrell Jackson (toe), Ashley Lelie (quad), Jonas Jennings (shoulder) and Justin Smiley (shoulder) did not practice due to injuries.

Receiver Marcus Maxwell continues his impressive play in NFL Europa. He caught a 50-yard game-winning TD pass against first-place Frankfurt that will likely put the Hamburg Sea Devils in World Bowl XV.
The Frankfurt-Cologne game would have to end in a tie AND Hamburg would have to lose this weekend to prevent the Sea Devils from playing in the championship game.
Maxwell ranks first in the league, among qualifying receivers, with 17.0 yards per reception. He is second in the league with seven touchdowns, fifth in receiving yards (459) and eighth in receptions (27).
Here's how the 49ers players in NFL Europe fared last weekend: | |
S JERMAINE HARDY, Rhein Fire | Recorded 5 tackles and 2 pass defenses at Berlin. |
WR MARCUS MAXWELL, Hamburg Sea Devils | Started and caught 5 passes for 95 yards (50 long) and 1 touchdown. |
DE JOHN SYPTAK, Frankfurt Galaxy | Started and recorded 5 tackles, 1 sack and 1 forced fumble. |
S VICKIEL VAUGHN, Berlin Thunder | Recorded 6 tackles and 1 pass defense. |
T TAVARES WASHINGTON, Rhein Fire | Started at left guard as Rhein averaged 5.3 yards per play. |

Comment: Viliphied is right, training camp doesn't even start for another 6 weeks people. D-Jax is seasoned Pro & he knows his body better then any of us, so now is not the time to panic by any means. Meanwhile I'm very excited to see how Maxwell will do against Pro players in training camp & pre-season once the Euro League is done. The guy looks like a beast & without being too over the top he does resemble T.O. in stature. I hope he makes the team because I really think he can help us.

Comment: Matt, Regarding draft trades: Allow teams 10 min for the 1st round and 7 min for the 2nd round. During the 1st round, a team may throw in the 'trade challenge flag' and request an extra 3 minutes for trade talks. That 3 min is then taken from their 7 min in the 2nd round so they then only have 4 min for their 2nd round pick. Theoretically, this would save up to 8 min x 32 teams or up to 4 hours of draft time. But still allow time for trades.

Comment: Hey Matt,
You know that the commissioner would like to shorten the amount of time teams have to make a selection because he thinks that teams don't need 15 minutes per pick in the first round.
Surely, it will save a lot of time but do you think that 10 minutes are enough for teams to make trade?
Isn't there the risk to see a first round with few trades?
Thanks

Comment: Hey Matt. is there any talk that Jackson could have surgery to correct his toe?
Posted By: old9er (14/06/2007 7:55:22 PM)
Comment: Do not want to get anyone in trouble. So I'll just say a friend/relative/other who works in the 49er office told me he/she heard: When the 49ers were trading for Jackson they knew it (the toe) could be a long term problem. So after the physical and before the trade they contacted the league office. They were approved to use a non football injury satus for this season if Jackson can't go so no impact on the roster and the team gets a fine reciever on 08 for a 4th round pick.

Comment: Jackson will be ok, he his a PRO.....one question MATT...if outside linebacker Manny Lawson, who has typically played on the strong side over the tight end in the 49ers' 3-4 scheme is going to be rushing the QB more this coming season, who do you think will be responsible or who is taking the role in the OTA's to defend the opposition tight end and does that mean lawson is no longer on the strong side .....or am i making too much of this because they will all be over the field trying to confuse the QB?

Comment: To those concerned about Jackson, read what he said again. He says if it were up to him, he'd be running right now, and if we had a game tomorrow, he'd probably play, but the trainers are holding him out of minicamps and OTAs. That's all. The sky isn't falling, and we wouldn't have accepted the trade if his injury is going to keep him out once the season rolls around

Comment: Looks like Seatle wasnt so dumb after all. Jacksons injury is serious. They knew that, and thats why they traded him.

Comment: Thanks for the update Matt. Any chance you'll be wearing a suit to the home opener?

Comment: Great job as usual Matt, all the diehards know you're the best source for info.
I hear M.Robinson is expected to have a larger role this season... How's he looking in the OTA's?

Comment: Matt, the comments from Jackson are a little disappointing. Is there any chance this turns into a longer term injury? Could we have gotten damaged goods here?

Comment: Thanks again for the updates Matt! It's good to have you back. I wish you and your family well.
