Today, I report to work wearing long pants. I've stashed away my green floppy hat for another summer. The bleachers on the 49ers' practice field have been removed. Training camp is over. The 49ers' regular-season mode has kicked off.
That also means that there will be a change in the way 49ers practices are covered. About half the teams in the NFL do not allow reporters to watch practices. The 49ers, thankfully, have not locked the gates. But with watching practices also comes some ground rules that the reporters are expected to follow.
For instance, we are not allowed to report about position changes and depth-chart changes, unless we are quoting a player or coach. Also, strategy tidbits are off-limits when it comes to our reporting. Could you imagine if we were allowed to write about the team spending several snaps working on a particular trick play?
Every team in the NFL has people who cruise the Internet looking for information that could assist them in game-planning for a particular opponent. So just remember that if you find out a certain something about your favorite team via the World Wide Web, the opposing team knows about it, too, and can plan to do something to counteract it.
Part of the reason I write this today is because this is the first day where I won't be able to give you the whole breakdown of which players are working with which groups in practice.
The 49ers hit the field this morning at 11:30 a.m. for a 90-minute practice. I could watch the first few minutes of practice and then rush back inside to let you know which right tackle is working with the first-team offense. Yes, I could do that. But, then, my credential for the season would probably be revoked and I'd have the carburetor removed from my car, thus stranding me in Santa Clara for days upon end.
The news of which player is taking snaps at right tackle will have to wait until coach Mike Nolan makes the announcement a little later. Stay tuned for that.

By the way, are 49ers fans still planning to show up for the regular-season opener wearing suits to show their support for Mike Nolan? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Comment: If teams allow reporters during practice, what's stopping a reporter from the opponenents city from spying. I could easily see someone giving information "under the table" to their home team's coach. How do they prevent that?

Comment: Matt, thanks for clarifying the in-season protocol on what you can and can't report. Do you still have access to the position coaches, or is it just Nolan and the Coordinators? I assume that the team trainers and doctor are also still off-limits, correct?

Comment: I have a graduate course that I can't miss the night of the opener, so I'm thinking of wearing a suit to class, possibly with a jersey over it. Any Suggestions?

Comment: My dad and I won't be wearing real suits (too hot), but we found found nolan-esque suit attire at faithfulsuits.com that fit the bill nicely.
By the way, I'm not affiliated with their site, I just think its a good idea with some of the proceeds going to a good cause (Alzheimer's research).

Comment: Whoa Matt, you have a carburetor in your car? What are you driving, a 85 Honda Civic? I work at a Honda Dealership, let me help you out =)
Response: Didn't realize carburetors were obsolete. By the way, where were you a month ago when we were negotiating to buy a CRV? --Matt M.

Comment: I will be wearing a jersey underneath a suit jacket as will my friends. I think this should be a compromise most fans can live with.

Comment: I'm not sure how wearing a suit detracts from honoring Bill Walsh? If you recall, the reason Nolan is wearing a suit is to bring respect to the game, and honor the old school coaches. Players will be wearing throw-backs, I'm not sure Bill would be rolling over that one. I'll be there with a suit, as will the 3 I'm going with. Haven't decided if I'm rocking the Fedora, we'll see at game time.

Comment: I was originally planning on wearing a suit to show support for Coach Nolan but it is now Bill Walsh day. Instead I will be wearing my new jersey that has "Bill Walsh" written in with the number 49.

Comment: I'm going to be watching the game from a sports bar in Austin, Texas. I'm getting together with other Texas area 49er fans and we are (for the most part) all wearing suits =)
Response: Please send a picture. --Matt M.

Comment: I'm attempting to get 49ers vs Giants tickets @ the Meadowlands maybe 3 so I can go with me my friend and my bro then all suit up at an away game with a nice big Rollin' With Nolan Sign. I'll see if i can afford it though

Comment: Definitely wearing suits. The three people I'm brining are forced to wear one as well. It still needs to happen. It'll only make the night more awesome.

Comment: Why doesn't someone from the organization post fake information on the internet regarding practices?
Response: Because they'd be exposed. That would cause all kinds of embarrassment for the organization, and a hefty fine from the commissioner's office. --Matt M.

Comment: I'm not only wearing my suit. I'm flying 3 friends in from North Dakota and forcing them to wear suits too! The best part is that two of them are Vikings fans, but I told them the only way they're getting my tickets is if they "suit up" for Nolan.
Any recommendations on how to get BBQ sauce off an Italian wool suit?
Response: A splash of beer would probably do the trick. --Matt M.

Comment: I believe the Bill Walsh tribute will cut significantly into the impetus to wear suits to the opener. Some who would have supported the Nolan tribute are considering wearing throwback jerseys to honor Walsh instead.
It seems to me that only concentrated efforts are recognized and diluted efforts are ignored.

Comment: nice job matt......Niner Fans please wear your suits to the game. It would be fun seeing you on monday night football.

Comment: Matt, I moved to Phoenix about 3 years ago. At this point, I'm planning on wearing a suit when the 49ers come to town. And get yourself a new car already. :)

Comment: Your rock big Matt!!! Thanks as always and BRAVO to the 49ers for drafting two players in the first round that BOTH ended up being starters in week one!!!

Comment: C'mon Matt, your car still has a carburetor? Aren't they paying the beat reporters the big bucks these days? But seriously, thanks for giving us the lowdown- I think its fair to say most expect Staley to get the nod, but I understand why you can't tell us definitively one way or the other. Do NFL teams ever disseminate disinformation through reporters on purpose? Seems like a decent strategy to mess with other teams.
Response: I can tell you when I find out for sure, but Nolan has yet to make an official decision. --Matt M.

Comment: Matt, thanks so much for this blog, one of my favorite pipes on the Intertube. I am wondering, how does one get a job working for an NFL team as a WWW spy? I think I might have found my calling.
Response: I'd start by hacking into your least-favorite team's computer system ... --Matt M.

Comment: Your car has a carburetor...?!?
Response: It doesn't? Who knew? --Matt M.

Comment: I have planning on wearing a suit, but I am monitoring the plans regarding the honoring of Bill Walsh. I do not want the wearing of a suit to detract from honoring Bill.

Comment: So, the fact that you are saying there is news on who is taking snaps at right tackle indicates that there is something interesting going on. No change at right tackle would mean no news. Just trying to read between the lines here.
Response: As I'm writing this, I honestly do not know. I have a very strong opinion, which I have shared in the past, though. --Matt M.
