Rookie cornerback Tarell Brown came to the 49ers with a lot of baggage. On Monday, he received some affirmation that he is doing very well with the 49ers.
Brown was named the winner of the Thomas Herrion Award. The award goes to the 49ers rookie or first-year player who has taken advantage of every opportunity, turned it into a positive situation and made their dream a reality.
"I want to represent Thomas in a positive way," Brown said.
Brown was a second-round talent at the Texas who became a fifth-round choice because of issues about his character.
Twice in nine months he was in vehicles that, when searched by police, were found to have marijuana. Twice Brown was charged; twice those charges were dropped.
Brown had a strong training camp on and off the field. He is a backup cornerback and he has a chance to become a starter in the future.
"He looks to be a good part of what we do going forward," coach Mike Nolan said.

The 49ers expect to have a mostly healthy ready for the regular-season opener next Monday against the Cardinals.
--Rookie safety Dashon Goldson won't play. Goldson is expected to miss another couple weeks with an elbow injury.
--Running back Frank Gore practiced and will wear a pad on his right hand in the opener. He sustained a broken hand July 30, but does not expect to be affected.
--Nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin went through some individual work. He is expected back at practice on Thursday and should be ready for the game.
--Cornerback Donald Strickland is listed as questionable with a lung contusion. He did not practice.
--Left tackle Jonas Jennings did not practice with a mild ankle sprain, coach Mike Nolan said. He is expected to return to practice on Wednesday.
--Receiver Darrell Jackson was held out of practice to rest his hamstring. He'll be ready to play, Nolan said.

NFL teams are allowed to have up to five players with a "C" on their uniform to designate their standings at team captains. The 49ers will not have those patches, as Nolan said he recognizes 10 team captains: Trent Dilfer, Nate Clements, Walt Harris, Joe Nedney, Eric Heitmann, Marques Douglas, Derek Smith, Arnaz Battle, Jonas Jennings and Moran Norris.
Harris and Jennings were named as captains because they're player reps. The others were voted in among their position groups.

Nolan said Ashley Lelie will be the backup split end and Taylor Jacobs will be the backup flanker. As for the No. 3 receiver, Nolan said, "Taylor is probably a half-step ahead."

Comment: Thanks for the info Pat. That makes sense. I agree that a lot of the guys here are quick to jump off the bandwagon.

Comment: About the captains, listen to Nolans interview on KNBR from this morning. They are a "bridge" between the player groups and Nolan for any player issues, for instance needing the cafeteria menu changed. The players were chosen by their position groups only. The players chosen reflect to me they chose senior players. I don't read anything in to this. I think Alex has enough other things to focus his attention on rather then voicing player concerns. There will still be 3 seperate gameday captains. Relax people....

Comment: Ten captains reminds me of inflation.

Comment: I think it's great that Brown go this award. It's just goes to show the Brown doubters that Nolan did know enough about Brown to draft him. People do make mistakes & we are all human so as Nolan stated on draft weekend that "if we based everything on young men making a mistake then nobody would be drafted" I said it then & I'll say it again "Brown was a huge steal" in the draft & I perdict will at least take the "nickel" position sometime during the season from Spencer who really hasn't played very well in pre-season.

Comment: Ashlie Lelie is the most talented WR on the team. He is going to surprise a lot of people who were doubting him going into this season.

Comment: Matt, your blog is awesome. I'd have to say the same about Barrows and his blog as well. I literally would pay a subscription fee for each one of your blogs (they're that good)! I pay for that garbage (or at least its turning into garbage) called ESPN Insider. Might as well pay for some real information and real reporting, as opposed to some regurgitated junk by so called 'experts'.

Comment: Matt, now with the cuts done are there any 49ers that are thinking of switching numbers? Maybe Lelie taking 84 now that Gilmore is gone. Thanks.

Comment: Hi Matt,
I love your blog and its the first niner information I look at. 49erswebzone requested not reposting your articles because it affects your compensation with the press tribune. I wholeheartedly support this as you do a great job and deserve to be well compensated. The only reason I have enjoyed repostings of your blog before is because the websense web blocker at work blocks your blog for some reason. The interesting thing is Matt Barrow's blog and the SF Gate blog are not blocked by the websense program. Is there anyway you could get websense to not censor you. I am sure I am not the only one in this situation who would love to read your blog on a break at work
Response: Neither Barrows nor I receives any additional compensation for our blogs (no matter how many hits it generates). But while newspapers go through a pretty dramatic transition period, it can only help when the higher-ups recognize that our blogs are drawing traffic. As for your comment about the "websense program," I have no idea what any of that means, but I'll try to pass along your comments to someone who can do something about it. --Matt M.

Response: Player representative for the union. --Matt M.

Comment: I was thinking the SAME thing about B. Young.
Response: Yes. I think it's odd, too. But I haven't had the chance to ask about why it turned out that way. Harris and Jennings were named as captains because they're player reps. The others were voted in by players in their position groups. --Matt M.

Comment: I can understand Nolan considering Dilfer a Captain, but no B. Young? THAT seems odd, doesn't it?

Comment: What kind of message does that send to the team if Alex Smith isn't selected as a "Captain"?
Posted By: Mike Mazza (03/09/2007 5:38:29 PM)
Comment: Is Brown's award legit or spin doctoring on the part of the organization?
Response: The award goes to a rookie or first-year player, and there are only six who fit that description on the team. Brown has certainly "taken advantage of every opportunity and turned it into a positive." I think the award is legit. I also believe it sends a positive message to him that the club recognizes he is doing well and nothing less is expected. --Matt M.

Comment: Are they the captains for the whole season.
Response: Those 10 players are captains for the season, and then each Sunday the team will have three captains that go out to the middle of the field for the coin toss. But nobody on the 49ers will wear the "C" this season. --Matt M.
