Our deepest condolences go out to Frank Gore, whose mother, Liz, passed away yesterday. Liz has been battling kidney disease. She has been on dialysis since Gore was a junior in high school.
Gore was at the 49ers' practice facility this morning, but he left to spend time with some family members who were visiting him. Liz passed away yesterday at around 5 p.m., Pacific time, 49ers coach Mike Nolan said.
"He's in town at his place," Nolan said. "He has some family with him who were here prior to finding out about his mother's passing."
Gore was extremely close to his mother, who raised three kids as a single mother in the rough Coconut Grove section of Miami.
Gore was enrolled in special-education classes in English and math during his first two years at Coral Gables High because of a learning disability, affecting his comprehension of written material. His mother fought for him to be included in regular classes, so he could qualify for college. Gore spent countless hours in night school and summer classes the next two years. He remained at home to play college ball at the University of Miami to be remain near his mother.
"Frank saw his mom a couple weeks ago," Nolan said. "It was important that he saw her at that time. He felt if he didn't get a chance to see his mother before the season that he may not get a chance to see her again.
"I think that Frank feels that his mother would want him to do his job. Frank knows that. I think that's where he'll put his attention when it comes to Sunday's game. I'm sure it's hard for him to get focused with what happened."
Gore plans to play Sunday in St. Louis. Then, he is expected to travel to Miami for his mother's memorial service.
Cards and letters can be sent to Gore c/o the 49ers Public Relations Dept., 4949 Centennial Boulevard, Santa Clara, CA 95054.

Comment: As 49ers fans we are lucky to have a TRUE SuperStar Player in Frank Gore! What a great role model for young kids. Tough neighborhood growing up, learning disability, the two injuries in college, and the man ends up where he is today! Incredible character guy, he could have used all those as excuses like so many other athletes do today to justify bad behaviors, but instead Frank Gore never gave up and became our #1 MAN! Thanks Frank Gore for being a TRUE Leader by your actions on and off the field! If he wants to play Sunday let him play, I will never doubt Frank Gore's decision making when it comes to handling adverse situations.

Comment: My condolences to Frank Gore and his family. This must be very tough for him.
Something different: The league is taking away the Patriots' 1st rounder next year because of the taping scandal. Umm, isn't that our 1st rounder now after the Joe Staley trades?

Comment: Hmmm, I didn't like Nolan's comment. Gore should be excused from this Sunday's game. That is what everyone else would get in their job. Sure it would hurt the 49ers on Sunday, but some things are more important than football.
Response: If Frank Gore does not want to play Sunday, he won't. He is calling the shots, not Mike Nolan. Everybody deals with grief differently. I have no doubt Frank wants to deal with it by playing football. It is something he loves to do. --Matt M.

Comment: This is very sad to hear, losing a parent is one of teh worst things I've ever gone through and I'm sure Frank is having a hard time. I would tell him to take solace in the fact that he is the kind of person that his mother will always be proud of. Keep being who you are Frank and she'll be smiling wherever she is now.

Comment: Shoutout to Frank Gore & his family! My thoughts & prayers are with you. It saddens me to hear about him losing his mom. But now she does not have to suffer anymore. I think Frank is a very special running back & he will play the game of his life on Sunday! He comes from The U, so you know he is tough! Frank, hold your head up high. God will take of your mom from here on out!

Comment: Very sad news. My thoughts and prayers go out to Frank and his entire family. We all know his mother meant the world to him and was part of the reason he entered the draft a year ahead of what most experts predicted, thus landing to us in the 3rd round, in order to get a contract signed and money to care for his sick mother.

Comment: "Jim in Walnut Creek" calm down man, it's not as if everyone is saying he should forget about it and do his job. Brett Farve had the game of his life after his father died. Barry Bonds hit a blast 450 feet to dead center in Arizona after his dad died and I would imagine Frank Gore will be focusing on football (which is his job) so he does not have to think about this tragic event in his life.
Obviously he should take all the time that he needs, but he has already said he would play.
Now that said, I want to express my deepest sympathies to Frank Gore and to his entire family at this sad time.

Comment: Rest in Peace Ms. Gore and Frank my prayers and thoughts are with you and your family in this time of saddness. If he didn't play this weekend no one would blame him. That however is not the kind of person Frank is so he will play. Here's hoping that Frank can have the kind of game that Brett Favre had after his father passed away. Take care Frank and good luck!

Comment: Well Jim, judging by Mike Nolan's comments, you would have to include him in there too.
Response: Nolan thinks very highly of Gore, and not just because he's one of his best football players. Someone asked Nolan, "Are you concerned about his emotional state because he was so close to his mother?" And Nolan responded, "I’m concerned about Frank for Frank, not in reference to the game. Obviously, he’s very sad." --Matt M.

Comment: I'm embarassed by Niner fans who frame this news in terms of Frank's performance vs the Rams. Frank needs to take as much time off as he needs to deal with this matter. His job comes second. His teammates can cover, as they woulkd for you or me in our jobs.

Comment: My sympathies to Frank and the Gore family. It's very hard losing a parent. My thoughts are with you at this time. It sounds like Frank's mother was a very special person and played a large role in making Frank who he is today. Frank was lucky to have such a special lady as a mother.

Comment: It's really amazing. I was lucky enough to score a post game player parking lot pass for the Monday night game. Frank came out of the locker room, spent some time with his family and still managed to come say hi to the fans. He took some pictures with us and signed my jersey. From what I can tell Frank is normally a quiet and reserved guy. The few moments I spent with him on Monday night, I couldn't even tell that he had something like this on the back of his mind. Thanks Frank, you had every reason to blow off any fans or requests for autographs, but you still didn't. My deepest sympathies go out to you and your family.

Comment: I agree 100%. I'd hate to be the Rams defense playing Gore Sunday,I sense Nolan putting a gameplan together centered around Gore, so the team can rally behind him and Frank can take out his emotions on the Rams D. Big game from Gore sunday, just watch! We love you Frank!

Comment: This is a real bummer, I'm glad he got to see her recently. The real question is how this will affect his play on Sunday, I'm not sure how athletes generally respond to this kind of bad news. My best wishes to Frank and his family.
