Guard Justin Smiley might opt for season-ending shoulder surgery later this week after an MRI revealed a torn labrum in his right shoulder.
Smiley said he planned to fly Tuesday to Birmingham, Ala., to get a second opinion from noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews.
"I'll know on Wednesday if I'm going to have surgery or wait a couple weeks," Smiley said. "I won't be playing this week. If Andrews thinks it needs to be done sooner than later, I'll opt to do it on Thursday."
Smiley sustained a right shoulder dislocation when he recovered a first-quarter fumble. Falcons rookie defensive tackle Trey Lewis dove on Smiley's shoulder. It took 20 minutes, a muscle relaxant and four trainers to get Smiley's shoulder back in the socket, he said.
Last season, Smiley played 14 games and missed no playing time with a torn labrum in his left shoulder. This injury was much more significant because of the difficult of getting it back into place.
If Smiley undergoes surgery, he would be expected to rehab for about four months. Smiley is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in March, and could command a nice contract.
"I'm still excited," Smiley said. "I have some great game film out there. I need to get ready and hopefully I can be back with the 49ers next year."
Smiley lauded the performance of David Baas, who entered the game and played the rest of the way at right guard against the Falcons.
"There will be no drop-off," Smiley said. "David Baas played a great game."
Earlier Monday, 49ers coach Mike Nolan said left tackle Jonas Jennings would be placed on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain that will require surgery.

49ers tight end Vernon Davis will teach an art project to underserved Bay Area youth on Tuesday at the Triton Museum in Santa Clara. He will display three of his own personal paintings for the students, one of which includes a Davis self portrait.

Comment: Hey, Matt..
Once again, thanx for keeping us informed ! ... For all the current Niner woes, your blog is the one bright spot in a dull season ! ...Just wondering why "Hoss" tends to give up on things that are working... and doesnt seem to notice situations he could really take advantage of ?
For example .. It seemed, the "no-huddle" worked pretty well.. (result: a TD on the first series) ... and Starkey & Plummer kept pointing out that the DB who covered Davis all day, seemed to be playing hurt, and couldn't keep up with him !... One would think "Hoss" could see these things up in the booth ... I'm beginning to think Hoss has a dart-board he uses for calling plays ! ... Maybe he could learn a few things by viewing some of the innovative plays used by Bill Walsh !! ... I'd like to see the old "Wrap-around - to Craig" play.. used after a couple of long ball pass attempts (for one) --- I bet they could get Gore some yardage with that one ! .. lol
(hey-- it couldnt hurt !).. What say you, Matt ?

Comment: All bad news :-( So where will our O-Line be? Jennings had an injury history with his former team and meanwhile I think he got overpaid. If Jonas is let go, Allen retires, Smiley and Harris are gone, how can this O-Line shape for next year? Or will the remaining O-Line be our future and get the needed experience together? Matt, can you allready think of starters for next year? And will Staley already be the LT in two or three weeks?
Posted By: Indiana Jim (06/11/2007 7:49:20 AM)
Comment: I really like Johnl's suggestion, but really I would leave Heitmann and bench Allen, because Heitmann has really picked up his game starting with New York. Larry, though, is past retirement time.
So I got:
Staley, Snyder, Heitmann, Baas, Harris
We'd have some youth out there for once.

Comment: Hey Matt what was the mood in the Press Conf., Nolan sounded a little emotional after taking the timeouts questions ?......berger, "I meant since FA"....

Comment: Dick Nolan took over a floundering 49er team in 1968 and had them into the playoffs by 1970. His drafts produced the likes of Forrest Blue, Ted Kwalick, Gene Washington, Cedrick Hardman, Bruce Taylor, Tommy Hart, Bob Hoskins, Earl Edwards and Vic Washington. They went 7-6-1, 4-8-2 and 10-3-1, making it to the 1970 NFC Championship. FYI.

Comment: Thank you for the Jennings locker update Matt! Please, if you see a change very soon please let us know. Merton, it would be interesting to see the Nolan/Singltary chage happen. If Mike S. took over and the team suddenly fell into place (300 yard offense), wouldn't that be damming against Nolan. I know Oneniner, you would tell us all that it was Nolan who laid all the ground work and he was not given a chance...sorry for the cheap shot but it was chuckling my butt off as I typed it. Love the niner spirit. Keep it up!!

Comment: oneniner-The 1981 49ers not only made the playoffs in the third year of completely rebuilding from the core, We won the Super Bowl. In fact, Walsh took over a team that had lost a lot of high draft picks in the trade for OJ Simpson. Plus it was before the age of free agency. It is one of the reasons Bill Walsh is in the Hall Of Fame. It is also one of the reasons us older fans are so spoiled and expect quicker results. We have seen it happen.

Comment: SLCParmer are you suggesting Nolan GM, Singletary head coach, and hire a new oc next year. That would be a contingency plan if Nolan can't get it together this year. My head is spinning. I had great hopes in Nolan. I am deeply disappointed so far this season, but I feel Nolan is part of the final solution.

Comment: oneniner can you poor me a glass of the niners/nolan kool-aid you're drinking please?ive lost confidence in the 49ers we're nowhere near a playoff team we're not going 7-1 6-2 or even 5-3 4-4 if we're lucky i hope and wish i'm wrong but show me 1 good reason why u think we will and i'll try to regain confidence we cant even compete we lost a 9-7 game to baltimore we lost to a 1-5 atlanta team maybe next year we will be better damn ive been saying that for 5 years now.

Comment: Ok, D-jax was a lame trade, ever worse than FA since we lost something of value (draft pick). Yes, Willis looks good. But the rest of the draft just looks well, average or worse. I am sorry, VD seems like a nice guy, but a number six with his skills needs to produce more when he is on the field. You can't build a team with one good pick a year. Your first day picks have to be startes. Our first days picks can't even get on the field most of the time. That is my point. Nolan has made some correct moves, but on the whole....the BAD far out weighs the good, so here we are the worst team in the league. That is not acceptable. Oh, Oneniner, build via the draft and make the playoffs (I am not a stat geek but)...look at Carolina when they came into the league. I think the kicked our ass early and often and made the playoffs real quick. I am sure there are more. Three years is more that enough to SHOW progress. I do not give a crap about the playoffs this year or winning the division. I jsut wanted the team TO SHOW PROGRESS, truthfully this team could have been better than last year (9-7 even 10-6) and we could have missed the payoffs never can tell what other teams in the division do. Instead, WE ARE THE WORST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE!!! It all starts at the top, by by GQ Mike.

Comment: Off topic (somewhat):
If Nolan continues to tank this year, I say we dump him and promote Singletary. Thoughts? Too premature? I'm also intrigued by drafting a QB in the early rounds, curious to see what you guys think.

Comment: Wow...just read the Nolan Notebook for today. What a bunch of double talk B/S. That complete ramble about the failed Robinson run and a potential 4th down call. Also, based on that series and the interaction Nolan has with Hoss...its now clear why our offense sucks. Nolan has his hands in everything and he just does not get the offensive side of the ball. Norv would have probably asked, do i have one or two plays now get out of my way and let me get it done. Instead...god ol Nolan F's everythin up!!! Again, Nolan Sucks and he has to go at year end. Oh yeah, i don't care what anyone says this jennings thing is fishy. Do any of you ever recall someone having surgery for "loose bodies" on a high ankle sprain...Matt please let us know if Jennings locker is near empty after this move. Seems to be that would be in indicator!
Response: Jennings' locker was not cleared out today. --Matt M.

Comment: Oneniner, just writing to say, I still believe. Keep the faith, brotha! Also, Mike in Sac, DJax was not a FA. He was acquired via trade with the Seahawks for a 4th rounder. And since we're talking about offseason acquisitions, why not factor the beastly Pat Willis, a legitimate rookie of the year candidate, into the mix? Would it kill you to give McNolan credit for making some good decisions? He's definitely above-average in the offseason, although he's gotten disappointing seasons from TBC and DJax. This is the regime that brought in Frank Gore, for chrissakes.

Comment: Give me one team in the history of the NFL that made the playoffs or was a winning team after rebuilding the core of the team through the draft in 3 yrs ?
Posted By: Mike in Sac (05/11/2007 8:47:38 PM)
Comment: Oneniner you don't get it. What are you Nolan posting under the Oneniner call sign?? You could give Nolan more time if he was showing progress. THIS YEAR IS NOT PROGRESS. Same team mistakes, same b/s coaching, Alex looks bad staring down receivers. We all could go on. I would give this bozo the benefit of the doubt if we were showing progress but Nolan deserves nothing. Oh yeah, did I mention the bozo timeout calls. Yeah the first half was technical b/s; again doesn't anybody check the helmet prior to the game? The second half was piss poor. I am surprised the team makes it to the right city for road games; hell I am surprised the 49ers did not fly to Carolina for crying out load. They do nothing well. Oh yeah, did we mention all the FA busts this year. TBC, the lineman from B-more and D-Jax are terrible. This is going to set us back. Yeah Clements is good, but hell a 2-year old knew that. M. Lewis seems serviceable but heck K. Lewis did not seem all that bad. BTW, no teams pay safeties much money because they are considered dime a dozen, so what great personnel moves did he make this year to get the team better? I am saying the drafts and FA deals have been average at best so...Nolan has all the power so these mistakes rest on his desk. NO EXCUSES he has had his shot. Now it is time to go. As someone said earlier, we are looking for greatness. Hell I would settle for average but this dope has kept us to the worst in the league...three years into "rebuilding" If this is rebuilding I am going to go drink myself to death!

Comment: Berger, I think you had better get used to the idea that our receiving corps is weak, and DJack is the best we have to offer. Hill might be more talented than others, but he also missed a TON of practice and playing time due to his injury. It seems like every time Lelie's in the game he quits on a route. DJack short arms stuff all the time. Pick your poison. And I'd suggest falling out of love with Hill and Lelie.
Posted By: MattinSac (05/11/2007 8:28:58 PM)
Comment: I hope Smiley does have the surgery. I think it's baas's time to shine and he has played well. I think that Alex Smith could be a good QB but we have to remember that he has had 3 diffrent O.C.'s in 3 years. About to be 4. Thats not his fault. Yeah I think that he should have progressed more and he should be more comfortable in the pocket but when he does get time to pass he looks decent. But I think that Nolan needs to g. He cant call a game at all. Hey Matt any insight why Lelie and Hill didnt get much time and if they get more? Thanks
Posted By: Berger (05/11/2007 8:24:56 PM)
Comment: Matt- set me straight on something. Hill and Lelie must be horrible WRs if they can't beat out DJack for playing time. DJack is terrible. He doesn't run a lot of his routes at full speed and he drops a lot of balls. I personally think Hill and Lelie are better and the coach is not the brightest bulb in the room. Am I way off base here or what is the deal with Hill and Lelie? And why does Nolan love DJack so much?

Comment: How come you guys don't get it. NOLAN IS GOING NOWHERE. We are stuck with him for at least 2 more yrs, success depends on is his pace to build a strong team...There is still hope, you can't give up yet...cmon guys stay strong, have faith, last season was worse than this, this season, we are blaming coaches not lack of talent, and you just don't cut your number one pick QB after 3yrs, Alex Smith is the one. Get your popcorn ready next MNF. I know my predictions have been unnostrodamus, but i believe in this monday night game, you should too. Its our last life line, our only chance to turn the ship... Go niners

Comment: Hey Matt, thanks for all the post's. I have a guess that the OC, will not come back next year. W/ that said who were some of the OC's around the league that Nolan has coached with,(like Tuner) or some coaching circles that he feels comfortable with, do you feel that nolan would try and stay away from the W.C. offense?
Posted By: johnl (05/11/2007 7:33:47 PM)
Comment: Mac: Here's my idea -- flip Staley to LT, his natural position; put Kwame back at RT (and live with the occasional sack -- at least Alex won't get blind-sided); lrt Larry be Larry at LG; move Snyder to RG, his best position; let Baas play Center -- where he starred at Michigan (and where he'll make up for Heitmann's incredibly weak play all year -- he's not the same guy he was pre-injury).
And, once again, moving out BOTH Jennings and Smiley -- tho fortuitous -- will be addition by substraction (as was already pretty obvious yesterday).
Posted By: Graham (05/11/2007 5:47:35 PM)
Comment: SLCParmer, you're not the first to ask that question. I personally don't see what Singletary brings to the table that Nolan does not. He's got no HC experience, he's another defensive specialist. He commands respect for his Superbowl win, but Nolan commanded a lot of respect when he came here, too, and still seems to have the locker room behind him. Singletary wouldn't be a significant change at this point.
Posted By: Mac (05/11/2007 5:39:52 PM)
Comment: Do you see Nolan switching Staley and Snyder before the seson is over? Is that a long term solution? I know Nolan likes Snyder at guard but we should be able to resign Smiley now. That would allow a Staley, Smiley, Heitmann, Baas, Snyder line.
Posted By: Rich (05/11/2007 5:29:53 PM)
Comment: I like Singletary as Head Coach, but if we do get rid of Nolan, I would like York to go after an offensive guy like a Sean Peyton type. I was kind of disappointed when we did not go after him the first time when the Niners hired Nolan. This might sound stupid, but I don't mind the Niners go after Mike Martz as head coach. He knows the Zampese offense since he coached under Turner, and then he can hire Ken Zampese as his Offensive Coordinator. Then maybe both Martz, and Zampese can really see what they can do with Alex Smith. I would keep the defensive coaching staff, and go back to a 4-3 defense.

Comment: Hypothetical question for you guys. I am not for getting rid of Nolan yet(It could change), but lets say he does get the axe. What do you guys think of the 49ers hiring Singletary to start running the show?
Posted By: sro_pet (05/11/2007 4:55:57 PM)
Comment: two questions:
Is Alex the next David Carr? Compare and Contrast.
I like continuity but continually last in offense?
Will Hostler remain as OC if our offense is in the bottom 3 at season end?
