Chad Johnson was sleep-walking through a conference call this morning, until he started talking about 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis. Then, he showed a very colorful vocabulary to describe the outstanding rookie.
Johnson was going along answer our mundane questions . . . "I can only focus on what I do" . . . "You have to continue to play at a high level" . . .
And then he was asked about what he saw when watching the 49ers' defense on film.
"I have to curse. Who in the (expletive) is number 52? Oh, my (expletive) God," Johnson said. "I've seen a lot of linebackers in my seven years and that mother (expletive) is good. He is the real deal. And you know he's playing with a cast on his hand, right? All during film, I'm calling him 'Bam-Bam,' like from the Flintstones because he hits everything. He is the truth. All I know is his last name is Willis. You tell him, '85 said, man, you're the truth.'
"I stopped watching the damn defensive backs to watch him."
--Johnson said it doesn't matter whether Nate Clements or Walt Harris is covering him on Sunday.
"They could put Oprah out there and I'll run a route on her."
So what kind of corner would Oprah be?
"She has so much money," Johnson said. "She has to be a man-to-man, lock-down cornerback because those are the only ones who get paid."
--At the end of the call, Johnson told the media to say hi for him to Nate Clements and Mark Roman. He also said, "Tell Mr. Nolan hi."
How do you know Mike Nolan, he was asked.
"I don't know him, but I want him to know me," Johnson said.

In speaking with Marvin Lewis, he said it has been a tremendous benefit to the offense to have the same coaches for a while. Bob Bratkowski has been the Bengals' offensive coordinator since 2001 (Johnson's first year), and QBs coach Ken Zampese has been in that spot since 2003 (QB Carson Palmer's first season).
"It's a great benefit to our players and me - to the players most importantly," Lewis said. "The less change you can have, the better."
Zampese has turned down some opportunities to leave the Bengals staff for offensive-coordinator positions. When asked if Mike Nolan spoke to Lewis last year about Zampese, Lewis started to answer yes, then said, "I don't need to get into that." Lewis said Zampese is talented and gifted and that he has decided in the past to remain with the Bengals and wait for the "right opportunity for himself."
--Former 49ers receiver Marcus Maxwell has been active for just two games this season, and has one catch for 5 yards, but Lewis said he really likes what he has seen from him.* * *
"Marcus has done well for us, unfortunately, we have been able to get him suited up," Lewis said. "I think he'll have a good future with us."

Comment: Denise & John,
Keep up the good work. Weinke should be a great asset to the Santa Clara 49ers. Coach Nolan can't trash him any worse than he did that Smith kid. Bring Larry Allen back too, that's a great idea. Maybe you could start Weinke at QB and Olson and Hill (Shaun) could play WR since Arnaz Battle is, well, a QB playing WR already and D-Jack ended up being a bust. Frank Gore is an awesome back by the way, his ability to only focus on what a play calls for him to do instead of improvising i.e. running where there is no-one to tackle him shows how well focused Nolan gets his guys. When I ran the team we obviously didn't know what we were doing. I mean Walsh had won 2 Super Bowls and I stripped him of some duties after losing a playoff game so he could only focus on coaching, Nolan needs no such treatment. You guys are great. Eddie

Comment: I'll second the motion for Patrick "The Truth" Willis. If Brandon Vera objects, Patrick "Bam Bam" Willis isn't bad either.....

Comment: Let's daydream about a perfect draft with the benefit of hindsight. Karlos Dansby is chosen with the 31st pick in 2004. We draft Braylon Edwards with the first pick in 2005. Niners take Haloti Ngata with the 6th pick in 2006 and resign Eric Johnson. We keep 2007 as is except we take Trent Edwards in the 3rd round.

Comment: pete...um...doubt it. 32nd in the league, and not even a close 32nd, in every significant category. a top-20 offense (which would be respectable, i guess) is more than just a creative coach away. it'll take some personnel upgrades. and not small ones. remember those WRs we have? wanna know why we didn't sign djax or lelie long-term in the first place? they were experiments, and they didn't pan out. we're not close to respectability.

Comment: Hey Falkniner, what we need is an edge pass rusher. I think with the right coaches the current cast of characters on offence can move the chains. Regarding Ochocinco, um, did I miss something here? Chad Johnson is auditioning for a job here because ... he wants to flush his career down the tubes? I mean I may think we have potential on offence, but why in the world would he?

Comment: chuck fron Penngrove- was Bam Bam the stripper any good?
Posted By: falkniner (12/12/2007 4:56:00 PM)
Comment: carmazzi, i'll bet you the niners make major offensive acquisitions this offseason. if nolan wants to keep his job, i'll bet my house he'll have to present the yorks with a convincing plan to improve the offense (OC, staff, AND personnel). if nolan gets fired, the problem remains the same: offensive personnel, OC, staff. So even a new head coach would have to make the same moves. if there's any silver lining to this season, it's that we know EXACTLY what needs improvement: offense.
Posted By: chuck from Penngrove (12/12/2007 4:55:44 PM)
Comment: Guys, Bam Bam was the name of Barney Rubble's adopted son on "The Flintstones". It also sounds like the name of a retired stripper from Fresno. And can we really accept a nickname from Ocho Cinco? Niner fans don't let Bengals give our players nicknames. It's in the book. Look it up.

Comment: i dont now why he is hating on our defense he is the one who is going to get hurt. he cant even back up what he says because he has no TD. watch out for 52 out there.

Comment: Matt, I may be reading too much into Coach Lewis' statement about Zampese but I'm interpreting it to say that Zampese told Lewis he wasn't interested in leaving Cinci for the 9ers OC job. So Lewis denied him permission to leave to save face for the 9ers and Zampese. Do you read it that way too?

Comment: Matt if im not mistaken in the beggining-middle of the season there was talk about the bengals and Chad possibly parting ways via trade. If that is true would you take this as a sign of Chad Auditioning?

Comment: Mike G..that would be a Xmas, New Years, and Easter present all rolled up in one. That is wishful thinking to say the least. 85 isnt a FA this year (but our 28th-30th pick would get it done)Cinn is definitly tired of his act and for what it's worth, he isnt slappin Ho's and gettin in trouble (off the field)and lord knows he's what this team needs in terms of production. Bryant Johnson is a FA and I think he is a MUST on the FA shopping list. B Berrian and P Crayton are the only other WR's in FA worth a look. at this point anybody with the slightest ability to run away from his own shadow and actually HANG onto the ball is an upgrade. I love Battle, but he should be our #3 guy and punt returner, not forced to be a our go to guy..Lelie and Jax good riddance..as for the OC,a dynamic mind with the ability to out think the opponent is where we fall short, does anybody remember VD's 1st catch of his career last opening day in AZ, a nice lil back side TE float out mis-direction screen..you have seen that play run MAYBE twice since then, last time i looked it was a 31 yard TD. Were so bad with our creativity on O that we dont even recognize what works anymore...say all you want about Nolan or Smith, who should or should'nt go..the problem is LOFT..fix the LOFT and were back to a team on the rise...LACK OF F**8KING TALENT!!! Mike G's wish list looks good for a start!!

Comment: Oh yeah...bam bam definitely fits. Bring in Chad? No doubt we'll take him. Get out of those flat lands & come back to the West..home of all the fine women & the best scenery around. (Landscape too, man now I'm homesick.) He played for Erickson in Oregon St after some time in Santa Monica Jr College w/Steve Smith. Come on back!

Comment: I would love to have Ken Zampese as the new OC. Only way though I think Zampese would be willing to take this job is if Nolan promises that there will be a major overhaul on the talent level on the offensive side of the ball, and that Nolan does not interfere with the game planning of the offense. If that is the case then Zampese will be the new OC for the Niners. Also, I would ask Nolan to bring in Bill Musgrave, and Hue Jackson at the QB coach, and WR Coach respectively.

Comment: Is Chad Johnson a Free Agent this year? If he is I would say go after him along with Bryant Johnson as your 2 WRs. Now you have a lineup with Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Ocho Cinco, and Bryant Johnson as your weapons. Along with Ken Zampese as the Offensive Coordinator, Bill Musgrave as the QB coach, Hue Jackson as WR coach (Who coached Chad Johnson in Cincy), Keith Rowen as your TE Coach, and Art Shell as your OL coach. Now if Alex Smith can't develop into a QB with this lineup, then I would consider Smith as a bust.

Comment: Matt, how do Nolan's NFL peers view him compared to the this blog that he has earned him a firing? I'm wondering if there is sort of a Barry Bonds donut hole effect, where 90% of the rest of the county says he's a good coach but 90% of the Bay Area says he's a bum7

Comment: 49ersRus, I thought the same thing when I read that quote. It wouldn't shock me to find out the Bengals (privately) wanted to divorce themselves from Johnson's antics/attitude. Personalities like his are okay when you're winning, but they can realy grate when you're not. Remember their playoff game a few years ago when he supposedly had one of the position coaches in a headlock during halftime. He could suspect that the team is getting fed up with him would consider trading him in the offseason FOR THE RIGHT PRICE. The Bengals aren't going to give him away, or even actively shop him around. But if some team decided that they HAD to have him, and would overpay the Bengals in a trade, the Bengals would certainly consider it. This quote could just mean nothing, or it could be a calculated attempt at an exit strategy. Time will tell.

Comment: I hope Ocho Cinco gets to meet Bam Bam. He has introduced himself to a lot of prima donna's this season.

Comment: I hope the Niners is able to hire Ken Zampese as the new Offensive Coordinator for the Niners. I agree with Bill Walsh (may be rest in peace) when he said that there are a lot of bright offensive minds out there that has not been discovered yet, and I would put Ken Zampese in that list. I see him on a rise like a Sean Peyton type coach. Look what he has done with Carson Palmer, and also Jon Kitna when he was with the Bengals for one year. Also, Zampese is familiar with not only with the Coryell offense which he learned under his father, and Mike Martz, but also has some knowledge of the west coast offense he too learned from Sean Peyton when both were under Ray Rhodes in Philadelphia Eagles.

Comment: Berger...you are correct Ocho Cinqo got it right. Especially with his history playing with a cast, Bam Bam is perfect. Matt...better tell Barrows the search is over.
On another note, should we interpret Chad's comments that he would like to come play for Mr. Nolan in San Francisco?
