Draft 2014 live blog: Day 1

SANTA CLARA — This is the live blog for Day 1 of the 2014 NFL Draft. I will update this with information and analysis from the 49ers’ press trailer.

4:56 Since 2005, the 49ers have drafted one running back every year except 2008.

2013: Marcus Lattimore
2012: LaMichael James
2011: Kendall Hunter
2010: Anthony Dixon
2009: Glen Coffee
2008:
2007: Thomas Clayton
2006: Michael Robinson
2005: Frank Gore

Do you think the 49ers will draft a running back this year? If so, which round?

5:04 The 49ers have drafted at least one wide receiver every year since 2003.

2013: Quinton Patton
2012: A.J. Jenkins
2011: Ronald Johnson
2010: Kyle Williams
2009: Michael Crabtree
2008: Joshua Morgan
2007: Jason Hill
2006: Brandon Williams
2005: Rasheed Marshall, Marcus Maxwell
2004: Derrick Hamilton
2003: Brandon Lloyd, Arnaz Battle

5:09 Ray Lewis just said he prefers Khalil Mack to Jadeveon Clowney. Which prospect do you prefer?

5:14 The Texans take Jadeveon Clowney with the first pick.

5:20 Expect the Texans to line up Clowney next to J.J. Watt away from the tight end in an Under front. That way, both players get one-on-one matchups.

5:21 The Rams take Greg Robinson with the second pick. The Rams ranked 18th in yards per rush last season. With Robinson, the Rams could finish in the top-third of the league in rushing.

5:28 The Jaguars take Blake Bortles with the third pick. Ted Tollner loves Bortles, raved about him to me when I interviewed Tollner over the phone a few weeks ago. Tollner said Bortles can play for any team.

5:30 Rams plan to use Robinson at LG next season. It’s becoming fashionable to put a tackle at left guard now that more and more defenses are using an Under front to get a one-on-one matchup between a three-technique defensive tackle and a guard.

5:34 The Browns trade the fourth pick to the Bills.

5:35 Daniel Jeremiah tweets that the Bills intend to take a cornerback with the ninth pick.

5:36 The Bills take Sammy Watkins with the fourth pick. They traded a first round pick and a fourth round pick this year, and a first round pick next year for him. Way too much for Watkins.

5:42 The Raiders take Khalil Mack with the fifth pick.  Big gamble by Reggie McKenzie. Second year in a row McKenzie drafts a defender from a small school in Round 1. The safer move would have been to trade down. McKenzie needs Mack to become a franchise player.

5:50 The Falcons take Jake Matthews with the sixth pick.

5:57 The Buccaneers take Mike Evans with the seventh pick.

5:59 The Vikings trade the eighth pick to the Browns.

6:02 The Browns take Justin Gilbert with the eighth pick. How far will Johnny Manziel fall?

6:08 The Vikings take Anthony Barr with the ninth pick. He is “athletically unique.” Never underestimate athletic uniqueness.

6:12 The Lions take Eric Ebron with the eleventh pick. We’re entering trade-up territory for the 49ers.

  1. I think you can add 2009 to the list of years that they didn’t draft a RB.

  2. Here’s the first big question of the night; WTF is up with Faulk’s bow tie? Is it big enough? Who told him that looked good?

    1. Scooter, I’m listening live on ESPN radio, let me have my excitement :)

  3. To those that questioned whether or not Clowney would go number one, I told you so. You know who you are……

  4. What would you prefer:

    – RGIII

    or

    -Michael Brockers
    -Janoris Jenkins
    -Isaiah Pead
    -Alec Ogletree
    -Zac Stacy
    -Greg Robinson

Big ramifications from the trade for the Rams.

      1. Those kind of trades can really set a team up. Rams have done pretty well with those picks, putting together a decent core. Not bad for giving up just one pick.

  5. Nothing shocking in the first two picks. It’s going according to plan so far…

  6. I thought they would trade back to take Bortles later. I am glad they took him though

  7. 2-1 so far. maybe my jags/vikings picks will be swapped.

  8. I really like Bortles- he has all the tools, probably not as talented as Alex Smith but perhaps one tier below. Definitely worthy of a #3 pick.

    1. That was a strange trade by the Bills. #9 + next year’s #1 + a later round pick – very expensive to move up 5 spots…

      1. If you think Sammy Watkins is AJ Green, Julio Jones, or better, you make that move.
