These are the players who were cut: Josh Johnson, Kenny Rowe, Ilaika Alama-Francis, Kyle Nelson, Michael Wilhoite, Chris Owusu, Nathan Palmer, Joe Holland, Cam Johnson, Tony Jerrod-Eddie, Kenny Wiggins, Derek Hall, Michael Person, Al Netter, Brett Swain, Michael Thomas, Eric Bakhtiari, Matthew Masifilo, Anthony Mosley, Rock Cartwright, Konrad Reuland.

Colin Jones was traded for a 7th round pick.

Four surprising things:

  1. Josh Johnson got cut. He had a 115.3 QB rating in the preseason, and he was one of the best players on the field against the San Diego Chargers Thursday night.
  2. Scott Tolzien made the team. He had a 41.9 QB rating in preseason. He seemed less talented than Johnson.
  3. Rock Cartwright got cut. He ran well in the preseason, and he was supposed to be the replacement for special teams ace Blake Costanzo. The Niners won’t have a veteran leader on their special teams unit this year. The Niners chose to keep Anthony Dixon instead. Dixon is younger, bigger and cheaper.
  4. Undrafted tight end Garrett Celek made the team. He dropped a lot of passes in training camp, but he made a nice 37-yard catch against the Chargers.
