Final word on Vick-to-49ers speculation

The 49ers have been saying for several months that the organization has no interest in would-be quarterback Michael Vick. But, finally, a high-ranking organization member has put his name behind it.

General manager Scot McCloughan left no wiggle room today when he appeared on “The Sirius Blitz” on Sirius NFL Radio with hosts Adam Schein and Jim Miller.

Miller: “. . . (Are there) any discussions on the potential – there have been whispers out there – that possibly San Francisco could be a landing spot for Michael Vick?”

McCloughan: “Well, I think what happens there, and I totally respect it, is people understand who Mike Singletary is and understand that he has no problem giving guys second chances.  Coach and I have sat down.  We sat down and talked last week.  We had an off-week of OTAs and we discussed about Michael Vick and we’re not going to go that route.  We will not do it.”

Schein: “So Michael Vick is not on the radar for the 49ers?”

McCloughan: “Correct.”

There you have it. End of story.

When speculation began in February about San Francisco being a possible landing spot for Vick, neither McCloughan nor coach Mike Singletary ruled it out. However, a 49ers spokesman said the 49ers were not interested.

Still, while there were plenty of off-the-record assertions inside the organization that the 49ers would not pursue Vick, McCloughan and Singletary publicly took the high road, as recently as May 21.

Until now.
