It has been confirmed through multiple reliable sources today that the 49ers continue to pursue a contract with Cardinals free-agent quarterback Kurt Warner.
Warner is scheduled to visit the 49ers, perhaps on Monday, according to sources close to the situation. Warner and the Cardinals remain about $3 million to $4 million apart on a two-year deal, according to a report in today’s
If the 49ers are able to sign Warner – who will turn 38 in June – it might be viewed as a shift of power in the NFC West. The 49ers would strengthen a position at which they have no announced starter, while taking away perhaps the Cardinals’ most important player.
Warner was considered an MVP candidate for most of the season while leading the Cardinals to the NFC West championship and a spot in the Super Bowl. Warner completed 67.1 percent of his passes, throwing for 4,583 yards with 30 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. His passer rating of 96.9 ranked third in the NFL.
While there is a faction in the 49ers’ hierarchy that believe the 49ers have a legitimate chance to acquire Warner, others in the decision-making process have privately expressed skepticism. The fear among some individuals in the 49ers organization is that Warner might cancel his trip to the Bay Area and re-sign with the Cardinals on Sunday.
