Gore is no fan of RB-by-committee

Running back Frank Gore does not like to come off the field. There is no urgent need for the 49ers to add a third-down back because that’s when Gore might be his best with his ability to run, catch and block.

But 49ers director of player personnel Trent Baalke intimated last week that he’s open to adding a running back to make the 49ers’ backfield more of a collaborative effort on all downs.

Gorere.jpg“If you look at the league right now, it’s certainly gone to a two-pronged attack, guys that complement each other, different styles that bring a little different element of preparation to the defense’s standpoint,” Baalke said.

“You’re always looking for something a little bit different. But if you look at the backfields that are really starting to have a lot of success, it’s not only the two, it’s the three-back system that’s becoming even a little bit more.”

Baalke cited the Cowboys with Marion Barber (6-foot, 222 pounds), Felix Jones (6-0, 218) and Tashard Choice (5-10, 212). Barber rushed for 932 yards, while Jones and Choice added 685 and 349, respectively.

The Super Bowl champion Saints provide a good example, too. Pierre Thomas (5-11, 215) rushed for 793 yards, Mike Bell (6-0, 225) gained 654 yards, and Reggie Bush 6-0, 203) added 390 rushing yards.

I asked Gore yesterday what he’d think if the 49ers added a running back to make it a three-man situation. He didn’t see overjoyed at the prospect.

“At first, I wouldn’t like it,” he said.

Gore said there are already certain plays and personnel groups when backup Glen Coffee will replace him on the field. Theoretically, Gore’s career could be extended if his body is subjected to less wear and tear. But . . .

“I don’t know. I feel I can play first, second and third down,” Gore said. “If I cant get in a rhythm, I’ll speak up and tell my coaches that – that I can’t get in a groove.”

“I feel the more I’m in the game, the better rhythm I get in and the better I am for my team. That’s been me since I started playing ball.”

Gore rushed for 1,120 yards and 10 TDs for the 49ers last season. He also caught 52 passes for 406 yards and three scores. Coffee was the 49ers’ second-leading rusher with 226 yards on 83 attempts.
