Ian Williams in, Dominique Zeigler out, and Green Bay cuts a quarterback

Matt Maiocco reports that nose tackle Ian Williams and linebacker Keaton Kristick have made the team. Maiocco also reports that the Niners have cut safety Chris Maragos, safety Curtis Taylor, wide receiver Dominique Zeigler, and wide receiver Joe Hastings. Maiocco reports Hastings will be offered a spot on the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Ian Williams making the roster probably means Will Tukuafu gets cut, unless Harbaugh wants to keep seven defensive linemen.

And Keaton Kristick making the team probably means Alex Joseph gets cut, and that Kristick’s ankle injury isn’t serious.

I predicted Kristick would get cut. Perhaps instead of keeping four tight ends they wanted an extra special teams player. Or perhaps Kristick is taking Josh McCown’s roster spot.

Cutting Maragos and Taylor clearly means the Niners are confident in their other safeties, and for good reason. They have four good ones in Dashon Goldson, Donte Whitner, Reggie Smith, and Madieu Williams.

Cutting Zeigler must mean the Niners are also confident in their receivers. Even though Zeigler is coming back from an ACL injury, I always thought he was talented. But there’s no space for him on the Niners.

I’ll update the blog with all the signings and cuts as the day goes along. Also, Jim Harbaugh will speak on a conference call at 5:15.

For those of you trying to figure out what the Niners are going to do about a third quarterback, the Green Bay Packers just cut Graham Harrell, according to Tom Silverstein. Harrell played at Texas Tech with Michael Crabtree a few years ago.

Could he be the backup quarterback the Niners want? If he is, they can’t call him a veteran. He’s never taken a snap in a regular season NFL game. However, he played this preseason, and his QB rating was 75.7.
