In London with the ‘spluttering’ 49ers

Greetings from London, where Andrew Elliott writes in today’s Daily Express, “Before the season started, the 49ers were touted as Superbowl contenders. But their defence has been porous and their offence has spluttered.”

Preseason “Superbowl” contenders? Don’t know about that.

Spluttered? That sounds about right.

Elliott also quotes Singletary saying, “I see a light at the end of the
tunnel. I see us turning it around. I see us as a team of destiny and
London will play a role.”

Singletary won’t be quoted today since there is no media availability.
The Niners, following their typical weekly practice routine, are off
today. But a few 49ers will team up with the local Tottenham Hotspur
soccer team at a school in London. Players from both teams will teach
kids soccer and football fundamentals. I believe most of the Bay Area
media contingent will be going to check it out, myself included.

By the way, to finish up on the Daily Express article, Singletary is
also quoted as saying, “Our identity is to be a physical team. I want us
to be a tough team, relentless, I want us to be disciplined and smart.
The smart part we are still working on, but everything else is in
place.”

In response to that last line from Singletary, Mr. Elliott writes “That is debatable.”

• There has been no official word from the 49ers on the status of Alex
Smith’s sprained left shoulder. Smith went to a hospital in London on
Monday and, presumably, had an MRI.

“It’s all right. Could be better,” Smith said to the Associated Press after his hospital trip.

UPDATE:
The Niners said Alex Smith’s MRI revealed a sprain to the AC joint in his left shoulder. Depending on the type, or grade, of sprain, Smith could have a separation. The Niners haven’t revealed that. Smith’s arm is still in a sling.
