Jim Harbaugh confirms Jed York’s report that the 49ers and Harbaugh have agreed to suspend contract talks until after the seaon

SANTA CLARA – Here’s what Jim Harbaugh said about his contract  Friday morning .

Q: Jed York said Thursday that you guys have tabled contract talks until the end of the season. Why?

HARBAUGH: Isn’t it refreshing? It has to be refreshing for you, refreshing for everyone in our building, refreshing for our fan base that the concentration will be on the 2014 season and our goals as a football team and achieving those goals. That’s the 49er way that I subscribe to. As I’ve stated on the record these past months, this past week, all focus is on the 2014 season and achieving our goals. Now, the organization and I are in lockstep and all energy and all focus is on achieving our goals.

Q: Jed also said you didn’t want to set the precedent of renegotiating a contract with two years left on it. Is that correct?

HARBAUGH: That’s another thing that I’m on the record for and I expressed that last summer when we talked about contracts. It’s my feeling. It’s a principal, a value. When you’re a leader of the team and you’re running in for a contract extension every couple of years, that has a tendency to have everybody else running for the water cooler.

  1. Funny, one would think that if it’s a principal/value not to renegotiate a contract with two years remaining, Harbaugh would have stated this last year when he and York were in fact talking about renegotiating his contract.

  2. I think the stalemate is about control over certain aspects of the operation of the team rather than money. Jim doesn’t like TB overruling him about personal moves during the season. Just need to read between the lines to recognize that fact. TB is a control freak and so is Jim to a degree. However in this case I tend to think that Jim is right. A coach needs to have the right to make certain personal decisions because he is responsible for the actual operation of the team during the season. It’s the GM’s responsibility to supply the coach with what he needs and only to over rule a coach if it impacts the teams long term plans– salary cap, long term team planning etc. Short term decisions should fall more to the coach.

  3. Clay said harbal (((burns to hot))) Teams burnout on him within 4-5 yrs. He has the habit of rubbing everyone wrong. Given Harbal’s pass record, Clay thinks Harbal will be looking for a new contract elsewhere.

    1. It’s the Pete Carole salary that has Harbal burning so hot, he wants to be paid a higher salary then PC
