SANTA CLARA – Joe Staley spoke at his locker Tuesday afternoon. Here’s what he said about Alex Smith.
Q: Did you see your coach’s “gobble, gobble, turkey” quote about criticism directed toward Alex Smith?
STALEY: I did.
Q: Has he ever used that language with you guys?
STALEY: Never.
Q: Do you know what it meant?
STALEY: Just a lot of talk. Gobble, gobble. That’s never been an issue in the locker room. It’s just people talking.
Q: What year would go by without Alex Smith taking criticism?
STALEY: Never. He’s won 19 games in the last two years, and people still question whether he’s a leader of this football team. There’s no question in our locker room or on our team – he’s our quarterback.
Q: He downplayed his finger injury. Can you tell if it’s affected him?
STALEY: I don’t think it’s been an issue. He never brought it up once. If it was, that would be stupid. It’s a finger (laughs).
Q: He’s a quarterback.
STALEY: Who cares? (More laughs).
Q: Do you ever encourage Alex to go on twitter and defend himself?
STALEY: No, he would never go on twitter. Although, on the flight he was checking out twitter because he was trending, I guess. That’s a big deal (laughs).
Q: You caught him looking at it?
STALEY: Yeah, he sits next to me on the plane. It was very out of character for him. I guess he was feeling pretty good about himself.
Q: Is Alex Smith your ghostwriter on twitter?
STALEY: No, but I’ve offered to ghostwrite his account. He’s not into it.
