Kaepernick on B.J. Daniels: “He has the ability to make big plays and keep plays alive.”

SANTA CLARA – Colin Kaepernick spoke in the 49ers’ media tent Wednesday afternoon. Here’s what he said.

Q: Everyone has a mentor in this league. What did Alex Smith mean to you?

KAEPERNICK: He did a lot for me. Alex is someone who really helped me pick up the playbook, understand what we’re trying to get done and how we wanted to do it. I wouldn’t be as far along as I am right now without him.

Q: What about personally?

KAEPERNICK: He’s a great guy. He’s a class act. I have nothing bad to say about him. He’s always helped me. He’s always put the team first. He’s a great all-around guy.

Q: Do you give B.J. Daniels tips the way Alex Smith gave you tips along the way?

KAEPERNICK: Yeah. I try to help him in any way that I can. Any chance I have to try to show him something or tell him to look at defenses a little differently, I do. I told him if he has any questions, just ask me. Don’t be afraid.

Q: Are you curious to see what he can do in a game?

KAEPERNICK: Yeah, I think he has the ability to make big plays. He has the ability to keep plays alive. I’m curious to see what he’s going to do when he gets on that field and gets the opportunity.

Q: What do you remember about Camp Alex?

KAEPERNICK: It was just going over the playbook, trying to figure it out. Everybody was trying to figure it out together. We didn’t have any coaches. We were all working on that together.

Q: Harbaugh mentioned your goals list from last season. Are you willing to share what was on that list? Were they handwritten notes? What was that process?

KAEPERNICK: Hand written notes in a little booklet he gave us, but I’m going to keep my goals to myself.

Q: Do you agree that you did a lot of what you wanted to do last year?

KAEPERNICK: Everything except part of No.3.

Q: Was No.3 win the Super Bowl?

KAEPERNICK: It was.

Q: You’ve had a lot of opportunities this offseason to do a lot of projects off the field. How were those presented to you, or were they things you actively sought out?

KAEPERNICK: Everything is either done by my agent or brought to me by our P.R. staff.

Q: How were those experiences for you? Were they everything you expected?

KAEPERNICK: Great experiences. I had a lot of fun, but we’re focusing on football now.

Q: You like to critique yourself on the football field. Now that you’re seen your body of work at the photo shoots and the commercials can you critique yourself on how you think you did?

KAEPERNICK: I’m not worried about that. I’m more worried about what we’re doing out here.

Q: You were on the cover of GQ this month. How do you feel about that?

KAEPERNICK: It’s a great honor. I was very excited about it.
