Kyle Shanahan says he has not considered benching Brian Hoyer

SANTA CLARA

This is the transcript of Kyle Shanahan’s Week 4 Monday press conference, courtesy of the 49ers P.R. department.

Has it gotten to the point with QB Brian Hoyer that you would consider making a change at quarterback?

“No, I wouldn’t. I look at each game where, I know we’re 0-4 and it feels extremely bad when you’re 0-4, I’ve been in that situation in the NFL and it doesn’t feel good, but you don’t want to lose perspective. So, you try to look at each game as it is, and I know we’re 0-4 right now, but when you lose a total of three games by eight points, I know we very easily could be 3-1, and you don’t want to make drastic changes just for one reason, as there’s a lot of things that go into losing games, it’s never just one guy, and I try to put all that into thought.”

How do you evaluate how Hoyer’s playing?

“Well, I think he needs to play better, and I think we need to play better around him. It’s similar to what I said last night, when you have the time and you’ve got guys open, you need to hit them. And I thought he struggled with that at times last night, which I know he can do better, and he does also, but I also know when he did make some key throws, guys weren’t great at catching them for him, either. I think it’s a two-way street. I think it takes everyone, coaches included. We all need to do better, and that’s what we’ve got to do.”

It seems like he’s playing with such confidence, certainly on the practice field during camp. Is he playing and letting it rip like you would like him to?

“Yeah, I think that happens to everyone. Real confidence is from experiencing success, and that’s when it’s real. If you’re not, you’re kind of trying to talk yourself into it, and that to me isn’t very real. When we haven’t played great in these games, and he hasn’t played his best in these games, you don’t have the same type of confidence. It takes some plays to get out of that. I thought that happened a little bit in LA, against LA. I thought we had a number of opportunities of that versus the Cardinals, especially in the first half, and we didn’t come down with it, and I think that makes everyone press a little bit more.”

Every job is a competition. At that spot, do you see this where QB C.J. Beathard and he are sort of competing? Could you get Beathard some more time with the ones in practice to kind of take a look at this?

“Yeah, I don’t look at it just as it’s Brian versus C.J. right now. I look at it as what’s the best for our team right now. And if I did feel that was the best thing for our team at this time, I wouldn’t hesitate at all. That would be an easy decision for me if I thought it was the best thing for our team right now. So, I look into the big picture of where we’re at right now, four games into it, where our offense is, our defense is and really just our whole building, and I don’t feel it is the best thing for our team right now, so that’s something that I haven’t started to consider.”

On that third down throwaway when you’re in overtime, is that the right play for him to make?

“The one in the red zone?”

Yeah.

“Yeah, definitely.”

Not just give someone a chance to make a play there?

“I mean, the chance to throw a pick if you do, no one was open. I mean, [WR] Trent Taylor was the first read and he was completely covered. We thought [Arizona Cardinals CB Patrick] Peterson was going to stay in man-to-man on [WR] Pierre [Garçon], which he usually does, but he passed it when Pierre went into an in-breaking route. We had [WR] Aldrick [Robinson] on the out-breaking route, which he would have been open, but Patrick Peterson was sitting out there because he passed Pierre to someone else, and that was the play, and those two were covered. You need to get rid of the ball at that time.”

ME: You’ve been very successful on defense when you brought an extra rusher. That seemed to rattle Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer, but when the Cardinals had the ball in overtime, they drove into field goal range in just three plays and you only rushed four, you didn’t bring an extra rusher. You could see that underneath passes to Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington. Why weren’t you more aggressive in that particular sequence?

“I think it was the first two downs we played zone coverage. When you play zone with a four-man rush, you drop and they checked it down to the back right away. We want those to be five-yard gains. We’ve got to break to the ball a little bit faster, make better tackles in that situation to not make it, I want to say they got an 11-yard gain and a 12-yard gain.”

And a 17.

“And then a 17. I don’t remember what the third play was. I know the first two were completed to the backs. I don’t remember what the third play was. But, we were in zone both those first two plays and they got check-downs and we’ve got to be better in the kill zone tackling and getting that ball, getting there faster. Then we got into our man coverage, and we brought some pressure, got the sack once, but you do it too much, just as you see, that’s what gets them to, gets the better looks down the field like they did on the go-route that [CB] Rashard [Robinson] almost picked, and then we had the PI on the one later with [DB] Jimmie Ward. It’s a fine line. You’ve got to mix stuff up. It’s very easy to, if you know they’re going to get 12 yards on a check-down, obviously you’d love to go man or pressure, one or the other, because those check-downs aren’t there when you do that. But also, would they have gone to a go-route at that time? You don’t know. So, you’ve got to mix it up, and when we do play zone, we’ve got to make sure it’s a five-yard check down and not a 10-17-yard check-down.”

What was happening on the touchdown play, and did LB NaVorro Bowman throwing that shoe off the field impact that at all?

“I’m not sure. I didn’t get to talk to NaVorro about that. It’s like two-minute always. Things are going fast, you’re trying to get the communication in for the calls, you get it to NaVorro, he relays it to the D-Linemen, the secondary. They got up there, they got set fast, and there was just a little hesitation in our secondary. We ended up getting to the right spots, but we were a foot behind, and when you do that versus a good quarterback and especially [Arizona Cardinals WR] Larry [Fitzgerald] going down the seam, they made us pay.”

What was happening there? What should have, the defense that you guys were in, everybody was on their assignments ultimately?

“We ended up being on our assignments. We were a little off our landmarks.”

I watched that play a few times, I wasn’t sure, was Larry Rashard’s man on that one, or was that meant to be Jimmie coming over?

“Yeah, it’s zone coverage, three deep, four under. So, no one has a man in that. But safeties, I don’t want to tell you guys all of our rules for our coverages, but any time you have three deep, four under and you’ve got someone going down the seam there’s the responsibility of people mid-pointing underneath hook droppers, getting depth so you’ve got to throw over them, which allows a middle third safety to play two verticals on the top, and we were off on a little bit of everything. So, there was a bigger hole in the zone than there normally is, and Carson threw a very good ball to a very big body, and they got us.”

Does a slot receiver typically get a free release in that coverage?

“Yes.”

ME: Is there someone you consult with during games on decisions such as whether to accept a penalty or whether to challenge a play?

“Yes. The guy I said a couple weeks ago. I don’t want to give his name twice because he got upset with me last time. He’s in our box, does all the replays.”

Is LB Reuben Foster close to getting back on the practice field? Is that something that you’re moving towards?

“We’ll see how his rehab goes these next three days. I’d be surprised if he got back this week. I’m not totally ruling him out, but it would surprise me. Being optimistic about it, but if we don’t get him back this week, hopefully we’ll get him out there next week.”

Does the fact that you guys are playing on turf have anything to do with this?

“No, I don’t think so. When he’s healthy, he’ll be ready to go.”

What have you seen from Beathard just in the last few weeks? We saw him in camp, haven’t really seen him since. Has he been taking steps that you have noticed?

“Yeah, the more reps you get, the easier it is to play. But, that’s also a problem in the NFL, too. There’s not a ton of reps. There’s not a ton of players out there. He gets almost all the scout team reps, especially when he’s running another team’s offense that’s similar to ours it really helps him. Doing some of the LA work, he got to spend all those practices, even though they weren’t full speed, running some plays very similar to ours. When he did the Carolina week, it wasn’t as much. We got to watch him try to run the zone read and things like that, which I don’t know how much we’ll use him on that when he eventually plays, but you’ve got to take advantage with the reps you get on scout team, and then we do mix him in with our starters, also, whenever he’s spelling Brian. So, it’s kind of the same story for everyone across the league. You’ve got to take advantage of those scout team reps, and the few you do get with your offense, you’ve got to be ready, and that’s why you stay out after with the quarterback coach, you go through stuff. That’s why you keep the receivers who aren’t going as much, just keep those practice squad receivers, some of the guys who aren’t getting as many reps as practice, you keep them after and try to simulate everything.”

From your previous experiences, will it take time for your offense to get the chemistry, get the timing together? Has it been a fast-starting offense in year one, or has it changed from–?

“I mean, depends on the year. Depends where you’re at when you get there, how familiar they are. I mean, definitely you don’t just come out and expect to be your best right away. You get good going through things, failing together, learning from it, going through experiences, going through different fronts, different coverages, guys get better as it goes, guys get better as you add to it to build the right stuff for it. I always expect to get better. You’d have to look at my career the last nine years, however we did in our first year. I’ll tell you kind of more probably that answer at the end of this year. But yeah, it does take time.”

Are some of the penalties related to that? It seems like some of the passing, the blocking on the passes is a step or two off at this point. Is that timing?

“No, I wouldn’t say that’s timing. You know, it would depend on what exact play you’re talking about. I thought yesterday from the throws and stuff, I think I kind of said that it was just pretty simple as throwing and catching from both the person that throws it and the people who catch it. The penalties are obviously something we’ve got to get corrected. We’ve done it way too much. I thought the more we were motioning earlier on those first few games, we had some penalties on that stuff. Haven’t gotten those the last couple games. We have had false starts and things like that. But yeah, we’ve got to clean up those penalties. It’s not just offense but special teams, too, and defensively. It’s going to be tough to overcome some things when you have those types of penalties.”

When it came to accepting that holding penalty, after watching it, do you still feel the same way you did last night?

“Any time that you end up not winning the game, I’ll second-guess everything. But, I felt good with what I thought at the time. They’re going to be third and 15 on the 30-yard line, and I had a very strong feeling it’s third and 15, I felt it was pretty much a guaranteed field goal for them knowing that we would probably, they’d do a little just check-down play the next deal, probably get seven yards and it would be a guaranteed field goal. My thought process in there is if you push them back a little bit more, you’ll entice them to get greedy. I know we’ll play man coverage and come after them and we’ll have a chance to sack them, and if we don’t have a sack, you get a chance for them to get a holding call. So either one of those, now they’re out of field goal range, and now I think we can win the game. All I’m thinking about right then is what gives us the best chance to win the game, and I thought by declining that penalty, I thought we gave us the best chance to win the game. Now we got the penalty the next play and now we’ve got to start over, reset, and still got to make sure to keep them out of the end zone and hold them to a field goal and then wound up tying, which is better than losing, but we got that PI, got the first down and then they hit the touchdown the next play.”

Have you ever caught a pass in the NFL?

“I have, yeah, earlier in my career I have.”

You didn’t look real thrilled with that. Was it emotion over not completing the play?

“Yeah, that’s pretty much how I feel throughout a game. I’m wound pretty tight, and I never got a chance to spike a ball, so that was my first spike.”

Do you have any updated on RB Carlos Hyde and how he is feeling today?

“I mean, Carlos, similar as last week. I know he battled through that game. I know he wasn’t feeling great, but he played well. Appreciate him being out there and playing hard, and I know I didn’t get to talk to him personally. I’m sure he’s extremely sore from it, but we’ll see Wednesday when he comes back in.”

And guys like WR Marquise Goodwin and DB Adrian Colbert and LB Dekoda Watson?

“Yeah, Marquise will be in the protocol. He got a concussion. Colbert, hamstring, so I’d be surprised if we had him this week. And then Dekoda, his groin, so I’m pretty sure we’re not going to have him this week.”

How is S Eric Reid coming along?

“He’s coming along. I think he’s similar to Reuben. I’d be surprised if he was out there this week. A little more optimistic for next week, but still, no guarantees.”

Solomon is playing as well as he is. Can you do different, is defensive coordinator Robert Saleh doing different things with him or is it just let’s keep him doing what he’s doing really well?

“We’ve used him a little differently each week, trying to find the best groove for him. He’s a guy who goes hard, as hard as anyone out there. He can play all the positions, so that’s kind of to me what one of his biggest strengths are, that you can put him everywhere. You’ve got to be a little careful with that, too, because you want him to be able to get good at a certain spot, also. But, I’ve been very excited about Solomon. I know he got his first numbers in that game, but people who run like he does and play as hard as he does, it’s a matter of time before good things happen.”

What’s been his best spot?

“I wouldn’t say he’s had an exact best spot. I think he causes some big mismatches when he’s inside. I think he’s got the quickness to beat the guards. I think on the outside he still has the speed to come off the ball and beat some tackles, and I think he’s better in the run game on the outside, also. Depends what the situation is in the game, but I think he can be a weapon at both.”

This article has 65 Comments

  1. It’s just a matter of time (reps). CJ was handpicked by Shanahan. Kyle will play him at some point to see if he has a QB of the future. If not, Cousins will be starting next year.

  2. It’s really sad to go down 0-4 when we had an opportunity to win the last three games. Just a few plays here and there we would be leading our division with a 3-1 record! Oh well. We are lacking the required talent to win close games. We got to fine a QB, # 1 WR, # 1 CB, speed rusher, guards and one more game changing runners by back.

    1. Needs in order:

      QB,
      OL
      CB
Pass rush specialist don’t care if he’s a DT,DE or OLB just find someone who’s actually good at getting to the QB on a mostly-consistent basis not just when the opposing team’s starting offensive line is in street clothes.

      1. QB, – agreed only because this is the most important position on the field
OL – the teams current biggest weakness
CB – very close to being the teams biggest weakness

Pass rush specialist don’t care if he’s a DT,DE or OLB just find someone who’s actually good at getting to the QB on a mostly-consistent basis not just when the opposing team’s starting offensive line is in street clothes.
Disagree – only to the point of it coming from the DT position. Defo has been rediculously dominant and Thomas is actually showing decently from the inside. The problem is with no edge rusher the qb simply steps back or to one side because there is no pocket. Our De’s with the exception of Dumerville are just getting dominated.

  3. Anyone gets benched it should be Robinson , he is awful . Had 2 picks pop right out of hands , one was a game ender .Actually gave up 2 touchdowns , but refs made two bad calls to overturn them , he has no ball skills at all

    1. Forget to add he let Larry Fitzgerald of all people to just run right in front of him to win it … pathetic

  4. Maybe the appropriate question should have been; when is Rashard Robinson going to be benched?
    K. Williams, Ward and Tartt are doing a good job. Heck, even Dontae Johnson is doing ok, but RR has become a liability that must be addressed.

Every player on the field should be measured and hopefully closely scrutinized by years end in order for the new regime to make a studied decision on who stays and who goes.
    First to go: Brian Hoyer
    Second to go: Rashard Robinson
Rest to be determined at a later date.

    1. Robinson gets cut before the season ends…in his interviews, he has a punkass attitude

  5. http://www.marinij.com/article/NO/20171001/SPORTS/171009977

“..Strangely, he cited a stray shoe as an accessory to the crime, saying officials should have stopped play to clear the field of running back Andre Ellington’s left cleat, which came off the play preceding Larry Fitzgerald’s winning touchdown catch for Arizona.”

“Why not blow the damn thing dead, get the shoe off the field?” Bowman asked. “So I threw it off. They rushed to the ball and threw a touchdown.”

“.Ah yes, that final series, which came to a jolting end. Bowman said 49ers defenders got caught out of position as Fitzgerald zoomed past K’Wuan Williams and gracefully collected Carson Palmer’s 19-yard, winning pass. Cornerback Rashard Robinson and safety Jimmie Ward converged on the play, to no avail.”

    1. Regardless, Bowman being the vet he is should have called timeout there. Between the abandoned shoe and defensive confusion by Williams no excuse not to (had 2 timeouts btw).

Protests aside for a brief moment, Kaepernick goes 0-4 with this 9ers team. Anyone who thinks otherwise, is misinformed.

      1. Well I am misinformed that Hoyer went 0-4, with a 67.8 QBR, but is still considered a starting QB, even though he has thrown one TD pass in 4 games with 4 interceptions.
        .
Kaep, with his 90.7 QBR, should have done better. In fact, since Kaep is mobile, and could elude the pass rush, he could have converted some third down plays with his legs. Kaep could play like other mobile QBs like Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton, Russell Wilson, Alex Smith, Marcus Mariota, Dak Prescott, Jameis Winston, Tyrod Taylor, Jacoby Brissett and Deshaun Watson, and use his legs to roll out and be a dual threat. Kaep knows the importance of scoring TDs instead of settling for field goals, so his record could easily have been 3-1, with no misinformation or emotions clouding judgements.

    2. That would be only the second time in Kaepernick’s career that he led the team to a 3-1 start.

        1. I was responding to a post that claimed that we now (after the first four games) would be 3-1 with Kaep. In 2012 Kaep went 3-1 in his first 4 starts. In 2013 he was 2-2 and in 2014, well….what’s the point about getting you correct facts? The only thing left for Kaep is to star in his life story and copy Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront. “You don’t understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am. Let’s face it.” At that time you will be literally the only person who thinks he is out of football for anything other than his ability to play his position.

  6. After last year’s QB farcical disaster, if KS benched Hoyer at this point I might mutiny. Please stop the madness.

  7. Let the suck for Rosen campaign begin. We need the first pick. Good year to watch less nfl anyway with the players’ anthem protests.

Good year to get out and play some tennis. I need a new stick. Anybody play?

  8. “You can’t pin this loss on Hoyer.”

Which ones are you pinning on him?

  9. I have no desire for them to bench Hoyer. Through his inconsistencies he manages to play just well enough to make a team appear competitive. He’s never going to win the game for you but as proven so far this season he can at least make the game mostly worth watching. Even though it doesn’t equate to wins it still somehow feels better.

We just have to tolerate his mediocrity for one season. As much as I’d love to get Allen on the team I really believe that Cousins is going to be the next 49er QB. I’m fine with that, can use the #1 pick on a new tackle.

    1. I think someone else mentioned this, that Hoyer is a bit like Steve DeBerg. He’ll play well enough to let you lose a close game.

I don’t think the Redskins will let Cousins walk. They’ll use the tag on him for the 3rd year in a row. It’s smarter for them to pay him $34 million than to have to start all over. The Redskins are a pretty good team.

  10. Question- You are not concerned that Hoyer is losing games that could be won?
    .
    KS- What, me worry?

  11. ME: Isn’t it true that Kaep lost 16 of his last 19 starts, but yet you held all the other players and coaches responsible for all those loses, but not Kaep himself?

    Seb: Yes

ME: Knowing that, don’t you think that maybe other players and coaches should shoulder the blame for the Niners 0-4 start, not just Hoyer?

    Seb: No

ME: Acknowledging Kaep has had a dismal win-loss record over the last two years, wouldn’t it be logical to assume that his losing ways would continue?

Seb: No, all those loses were not his fault.

ME: Is your sick infatuation with Kaep ever going to come to the realization that he is just a mediocre quarterback at best who’s only won 3 games in the last two years he played, two of which were against the then lowly Rams?

Seb: Never, I idolize him. I love him. He’s the best. He can put his foot on the one millimeter line and run untouched for TD’s.

ME: Do you have any concrete evidence, other than wishful thinking, that would lead you to believe he could win in this league?

    Seb: No

    1. Juan- Is Kaep superior to Hoyer?
      .
      Seb- Yes.
      .
Juan- Would KS be content to lose with Hoyer, instead of winning with Kaep?
      .
      Seb- Looks that way.

    2. ME: Isn’t it true that Kaep lost 16 of his last 19 starts, but yet you held all the other players and coaches responsible for all those loses, but not Kaep himself?

Kaep has proven to be very good at losing over the past two seasons… to the point where his overall record is now below .500

      1. Seb- Do you think that it only the QB’s fault when the GM hates his guts and dismantles a SB team just to get a high draft position?
        .
The unwashed masses- Does not matter, Kaep should have been able to stop third string RBs from galloping for 200 yards.

  12. ME: Have you discussed your obsession with Kaep with your therapist?

    Seb: Yes

ME: Without divulging to much, would your therapist call your fascination with a rather obscure unemployed football player unhealthy?

    Seb: Yes, very much so.

ME: Knowing this, are you still going to promote Kaep’s mediocrity to everyone?

Seb: You betchya! I’ll never stop.

    1. Seb- Juan, are you still claiming Kaep is only a mediocre QB, even though he stormed into the SB after only playing 10 games while also setting playoff records?
      .
Juan- That is the very definition of mediocre.
      .
Seb- Juan, why do you hate Kaep?
      .
Juan- I do not hate him, I only despise him and do not want to let him ever play again.

      1. I guess every other team is the league is stupid for not picking up Kaep then right? Or are you one of the ones that actually believe he is just being blackballed?

        1. When the President of the United States calls him an SOB, and tells him he is FIRED, then threatens to send a mean tweet to any owner that signs him, sure he is being blackballed, just like the blacklisting of the writers in Hollywood.
          .
This is an egregious sordid persecution, and is making Kaep into a martyr.
          .
History will not be kind to the perpetrators, and Jed risks looking like a coward, to not stand up against a bloviating belligerent bully.

  13. The Chiefs are 5-0, the only undefeated team in the NFL presently, and they’ve got Whatshis Name at QB. Can you believe it.? You can’t really get too down on Seb because, when it come to QBs, he thinks pretty much just like Harbaugh. You don’t need for your QB to actually show some real NFL QB talent to earn his job. You just gotta believe. When your starter QB goes down from injury, you ignore that he got the team to NFC Championship the previous year and you lost only because of a stupid rookie type mistake by your punt returner. You ignore that he was dominating statistically when he went down to injury. You ignore the bedrock principle of sports that a starter does not lose his job solely to injury. No, you just believe, believe, believe. Seb and Harbaugh. Now the Chiefs have Whatshis Name and we have….endless arguments about a guy who never really properly developed into an NFL QB but brought his exciting brand of playground football to us for a couple of years. Yeah, they say that Harbaugh never let his QBs call the plays in practice. If it was up to Kaepernick, we would have just drawn them on the ground in the huddle. Maybe it’s just me, but I enjoy watching the Chiefs manage football games each week. Old Whatshis Name has taken a long time to win a Super Bowl but maybe this is the year. And a long time is way shorter than never.

    1. Sure hope Alex learns to run the hurry up offense without huddling up, he might even win an AFCC Game.
      .
Sure is nice to see how a decent QB can keep winning, with an elite RB, solid O line, fast WRs, stout defense and competent coaching. I wonder why they drafted Mahomes.
      .
Kaep came within 5 yards of winning a SB, and one pass from returning. That is something Alex has never done, and he might get injured, and replaced, AGAIN.
      .
JH played the hot hand, and after the GB and Falcons games, no one was second guessing him. Madden was right. It is a lot easier to replace a suit than a coach. Just look at the last 3 years. JH led an underperforming team to 3 straight NFCC Games, so I kinda like him. Tomsula did not have a clue, and Chip was given O’Neil, who promptly led the Niner defense into giving up historically bad amounts of yardage. Even with Baalke, the cancer, thrown into the gutter, KS has yet to win a game.
      .
Glad you admit you are now a Chiefs fan. Hope you go to their site and post about how great Alex is, and how he will lead the Chiefs to the promised land. Bet they will all agree with you.

    2. I hope AS gets there.
Not just because he’s a decent player, but he’s a decent human too.
But that doesn’t mean that kap couldn’t have won some if not the last one with his legs.

      1. AS is a competitor and a survivor. Kaep never competed for a position in a sport in his life. That is not unusual up to the point of reaching the NFL. Unbelievably Harbaugh lost his concentration and Kaep was handed the keys because of an injury and kept his place, despite having to have the offense re-tooled to accommodate his weaknesses, Harbaugh played cute and refused to re-instate his starter after he recovered from injury. The bottom line is that he could win games with sheer athletic talent and playground tactics, but not as a team player. His greatest success was on broken plays and defensive lapses. No who ever played competitive sports has not heard one of his coaches remind him that there’s no ‘I’ in team. Harbaugh made an exception and we’re all still paying for it. This is the NFL not some after school pick-up league!

        1. WC, you forgot to mention that Kaep is married to JH’s daughter, and that he owed JH a lot of money and the only way to pay him back (endorsements) was to play him. He also never actually worked out, he showed up real early at the gym and then he would hide out where nobody could find him. That’s why he was always the last one to leave!
Thanks for letting the cat out of the bag WC, just keep drinking…..

          1. Dee – Kaepernick was not recruited and accepted the only offer he received to play at the University of Reno. He started 11 games in his freshman year and never looked back. Even someone unfamiliar with the immense competition that occurs at FSB schools, especially at quarterback, I stand behind my claim that he never actually had to compete for a position. If you actually believe to the contrary, you have no idea what the major programs do to wean out the best performers. Remember Matt Barkely warmed the bench in college and was ultimately drafted and has played in the NFL. That is what competition is. The best example of competition that I can easily recall and one I have mentioned before is that Miami U at one time had Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee and Frank Gore competing for playing time. I’m not going to waste any more time arguing with a Kaep syncophant like you and Seb (how about that word for a guy whose been drinking?) but if you think that Urban Meyer recruited one and only one potential FSB quarterback you have no clue. Also, there are a great deal more people who have competed at all levels of sports who believe, as I do, that you do not replace a starter who is performing well in every measurable category, simply because he went down from an injury. If the only tool you have to argue your position is to make slurs about your opponent you should consider working more with your hands.

            1. WC, you sure are good at contradicting yourself! Unless you were on the UN coaching staff, you don’t know what Kap had to do to keep his job……

If the only tool you have to argue your position is to make slurs about your opponent you should consider working more with your hands.

This is excellent example of your imbibed and therefore inhibited thinking! If you knew what I do for a living you wouldn’t spew such moronic idiocy. It shows that you are trying slur my name (pun intended) while I never slurred yours (I don’t drink)
I never see or saw Kap as our salvation, but I do think he would have produced more TD’s in four games and had given us a W.
Just stick to the facts WC! (look up what WC stands for in Europe….)
              BTW, I’m not your opponent.

            2. Never had to compete for a position? He out competed the starting QB in Reno in his freshman year.
              .
Kaep lost the competition to Alex, sat, studied and worked out to get stronger. When Alex went down due to a concussion because he would rather take a hit than throw the ball away and hurt his completion percentage, Kaep played. Kaep played so well, he won the starting job, and since Alex demonstrated that he could never win the big game, (NFC +AFC Championship Game), it was justified. JH was playing the hot hand, and did not hate Alex, he just wanted to win a SB.
              .
JH followed Bill Bellichick, and played the hot hand, just like BB did with Tom Brady when Bledsoe went down. Sure, a player should never lose his job to injury, but if a superior player steps up, the former injured player was just out competed. Tough call, but until the last minute of the SB, I thought JH was perfectly justified to make that gutsy decision. It almost worked.
              .
After JH fled the Niners, Kaep competed with Gabbert. He lost his job due to injury. Gabbert competed for the starting job last season and won it because Kaep was still rehabilitating from his 3 surgeries, and could not play in the OTAs, TC and most of the preseason. Kaep certainly was not handed the job.
              .
Gabbert pulled a Gabbert, and benched himself, and Kaep did not fare so well with absolutely no support. Putrid O line, worst ranked WRs that could not get open, Another Cleveland DC who had no clue, and a GM who dismantled a SB team, hated his guts and leaked and smeared to stab Kaep in the back.
              .
Despite that, Kaep managed to get a 2 TD lead on TB and the Cowboys, was only down 3 points to the eventual SB champs Patriots in the third quarter, and 2 yards away from a stirring comeback against Miami.
              .
I have no doubt in my mind that Baalke read Kaep the riot act, and told him that he had power over him and forbade him to do anything except what Baalke wanted. Baalke kept treating his players like they were pieces of meat, and he had exceptional animus towards anyone to do with the legacy of JH. Kaep returned the favor, and told Baalke to stick it where the sun dont shine.
              .
He started his protests, and did not care what Baalke said. Kaep tried his hardest to win, and his stirring 4th quarter comeback against the Rams was not only done to show Kaep’s indomitable will to win, it destroyed Baalke’s chance to get the first pick in the draft. A win/win for Kaep.
              .
By this time, everyone except Jed and Paraag hated Baalke’s guts, and they voted Kaep the Len Eshmont award winner just as a slap in the face to Baalke. Of course, Kaep was showing exceptional leadership, and his bravery in the face of death threats was admirable.
              .
Now, Kaep is still competing for a job. Too bad he is fighting against the supposed most powerful man in the world, and his owner buddies. The blackballing is giving the NFL a big black eye, and is turning off many fans who think the league is dictatorial, mean, vindictive and persecutorial. It is making a martyr out of Kaep, and their best move would just to allow him to play, and hope he fails. Kaep is playing it smart by keeping a low profile, and patiently waiting for attrition to set in and provide opportunities. Sure, Kaep has made mistakes, and he could have done things differently, but he was effectively being marginalized until Trumpty Dumpty stepped in it to pander to his base. Now the protests have gained momentum, with whole teams protesting, because players are angry at being treated like chattel.
              .
Police brutality is front and center, and some consider the body cams prove the police right when it came to Michael Bennett. However, I have little doubt that Michael Bennett was singled out, and they knew who he was ahead of time, and wanted to punish him for protesting. They thought they were being clever by sending Latino officers against Michael Bennett. However, once I heard that the officer turned off his body cam, I knew they wanted to send him a message. Any security person who draws his weapon and puts his gun against the head of an unarmed civilian who is face down on the pavement, is abusing his authority. The fact that he threatened to blow off the head of Michael Bennett just confirms my belief that they targeted him for ‘special’ treatment.
              .
To me, turning off a body cam is just an admission of guilt, because an innocent officer would want everything documented. They profiled Michael Bennett, singled him out even though there were lots of other people running away, and terrorized him. They sent a message, but it was an ugly vicious one, and I support Michael Bennett and his version of events.
              .
WC, thanks again for mentioning me. I feel perfectly justified to respond. I have been generally leaving you alone, but I guess you just cannot help yourself.
              .
Sycophant? You mean you and your undying devotion to Hoyer? Go ahead. Hoyer is pulling a Gabbert. if you think I have little football knowledge because I support Kaep, I think you have even less football knowledge for supporting a QB who had a 54 QBR last game.
              .
IF the Niners want to win, they should be open to improving the QB situation. They should sign Kaep with a -prove it- contract, and make it an open competition. Talk about being handed a job, Hoyer has gotten every first string snap, and now is 0-4.

              1. Seb, I see now that you are capable of composing coherent contributions. Why don’t you stick to that instead of those knee jerk comments.

        2. JH was bold when he rolled the dice with Kaep. He spotted the Packers a pick six, then ran roughshod all over them. Kaep then went down by 17 points to the Falcons, and came storming back for the win. JH looked like a genius when he rode on Kaep’s cape into the SB, and nobody thought that Alex could have overcome those obstacles. Alex could not do it in 2011, and even though he was handed a supremely talented and well coached team, he has not done it lately, either.
          .
History showed that Kaep did not get that ring, and there was lots of second guessing. Alex was traded to KC at his behest, and has done well there. I wish him well. Kaep came within one pass of returning to the SB, but failed, so Jed went Eddie, and Baalke went Joe Thomas. They stabbed JH in the back, and left him twisting in the wind. JH felt betrayed, and that did not give him any incentives to want to win games towards the end, once the told him they were not going to allow him to continue coaching the Niners. That famous- only men are allowed – comment was made after they gave JH the bad news. He did not give a damn. JH had a nice fallback position, and I wish him well.
          .
WC, nice fantasy. Personally, I like my historical review better than yours, but I probably will not be able to change your point of view. Yes, JH wears on people, but he is passionate, and all football. JH made the Niners relevant again, and the Niners stabbed him in the back and kicked him to the gutter. Then they are doing the same thing with Kaep. Even though I hope he returns, I totally understand, if he also feels betrayed and stabbed in the back. Jed and Paraag did it to Kaep again, so Lynch had to apologize.
          .
I also marvel at the upstanding character of Kaep and his forthright courageous stand, bravely withstanding death threats and loss of endorsements, and even his employment, standing up for his principles. Kaep’s capacity to forgive is commendable, especially after having to deal with Baalke and all his lies, smears and backstabbing.
          .
Now they are pontificating that Kaep is not talented enough to be able to play in the NFL. That is the oldest trick in the book, and just a dog whistle to denigrate a black man. They even derided his ability to read and snarkily said he should be converted to TE because he was not smart enough to be a QB.
          .
After watching the drek and pathetic quarterbacking in the league so far this season, all of those reasons and insults are blown out of the water. Hoyer? Looks like KS is deluding himself, and is stubbornly continuing to support the indefensible. KS is being rigid, and inflexible, and now has an 0-4 record.
          .
Hoyer is doing what I predicted. Hoyer is pulling a Gabbert. There is a reason why he is on his 7th team. Kaep would have won at least 2, maybe 3 of those games, since they were so close.
          .
Jed needs to grow up and choose a QB over a suit. I want Jed to keep his word. He said he would do everything in his power to help the team win. He and Paraag can remain friends, but I want him gone.
          .
Maybe KS is content to lose, and thinks signing Kaep may ruin their draft position if they win games.
          .
However, if Kaep does well, maybe he can regain his franchise mantle, and lead them to the playoffs. Then they can pass on a QB and use their first pick to get a good O lineman. They could select Jake Browning, Lamar Jackson or one of many other QBs who will be available in the second round.

  14. Seb- Juan, did you know that being an admirer of a player who last led the Niners to a Super Bowl, is just being a die hard faithful Niner fan?
    .
Juan- I do not care. I am filled with hate so much that I want to lie about and disparage another person because it makes me feel superior. I know, it is just code and a dog whistle for not so hidden racist tendencies, but being sick and twisted is par for the course, and I relish in it.

    1. This is like reading the script for seasame street or the muppets. Can you type with that sock puppet on your hand? I would love video of this exchange Mr. Sock Puppet

      1. Matt, get in line. I will deal with you later.
        .
Before that, please dazzle me with your succinct wit and astute analysis. Please do not disappoint me, or I will just relegate you to the lightweight category.

  15. If Shanahan actually hasn’t considered benching Hoyer then he isn’t being a coach. Coaches are always thinking what is best for the team and that involves thinking about all the players and how they work together. Shanahan has a better P.R. presence but he still isn’t being exactly candid.

The new PC remind me of WH briefings where everyone knows everyone, they’re friendly to each other and yet no real information is passed along. Just enough for press clippings and talking points.

  16. WE have a SECRET weapon!

“The guy I said a couple weeks ago. I don’t want to give his name twice because he got upset with me last time. He’s in our box, does all the replays.”

Grant is realizing a missing OC might not be good.

  17. Hoyers numbers r putrid, especially if you take away his one good half where they were in soft zone coverage with a big lead. Can one of you whizz kids put up a comp between Hoyer and Kaep thru 4 games? I’m curious if the numbers bear out Hoyers ineptitude……

      1. We knew before the season started that Hoyer was not the answer, but if he gets sacked 6 times, dropped passes, slippery grass, that’s not completely on him.
Beathard seems very green, I think we should stick with Hoyer and try to get the #1 pick. There’s no reason to panic, the games are at least entertaining.

  18. Trent Taylor: 11 Rec, 93 YDs, 1 TD, 8.5 Y/R.
    Jeremy Kerley: 13 Rec, 93 YDs, 0 TDs, 7.2 Y/R.

      1. Guess that makes Kittle their 2nd best
        10rec 83 yards 8.3 avg

Suppose by default since there are only 3 draft picks actually playing that Solly is #3.

If Foster can manage to stay healthy for more then 8 minutes I’m sure he’ll take over the top spot.
