Midterm report card: Anthony Davis

In the past, Anthony Davis needed help from tight end Vernon Davis in pass protection. This season, Anthony Davis is the best pass blocking offensive lineman on the 49ers.

Now it’s Joe Staley who’s getting occasional blocking help from Vernon. Anthony Davis mostly is holding his own.

He gave up three sacks against the New York Giants in Week 6, but he hasn’t given up a sack in the other seven games. Against the Arizona Cardinals, Davis didn’t give up a sack, a hit or a hurry. He was perfect.

He can still improve his run blocking. Pro Football Focus ranks him as the 21st-best run-blocking tackle in the NFL and the 5th-best run-blocking offensive lineman on the 49ers. Frank Gore is averaging just 3.3 yards per carry running behind Davis this season. To put that in perspective, Gore is averaging 7.6 yards per carry behind Mike Iupati, and more than 4 yards per carry behind everyone else.

MIDTERM GRADE: A-.
