  1. In 2010 the NFC West won 25 games all season. Just 3 years later, the NFC West won 22 games in the last half of the season. My how things change.

  2. Sacto ..

    remember way back when …
the NFC West was the laughing stock of the NFL ?

(and the NFC East were the darlings ?)

My how things change, huh ?

  3. Thank you to the men and women of our armed forces around the world who are serving and have served this great nation of ours! Thank you to all your families and their sacrifices! Go USA!

  4. So all the teams in the nfcw had a winning or .500 record against eachother? Over the final 8 games?

  5. 2013 NFC West division records:

    49ers: 5-1
    Seahawks: 4-2
    Cardinals: 2-4
    Rams: 1-5

This is a better gauge of evaluating these teams than comparing their record for the last 8 games of the season.

    1. The Cardinals went 4-4 during the first half of the season as they adjusted to a new offensive system, but they had the best offense in the division during the second half of the season.

      1. Cardinals~31 Turnovers, 22 coming via air mail with 41 sacks, 13 of the turnovers occurring in the second half of the season.

49ers~18 turnovers, 8 coming via air mail with 39 sacks, 6 of the turnovers occurring in the second half of the season.

        1. So the Cardinals posted the same record as the 49ers in the second half of the season despite turning the ball over twice as often. Add in the fact that during that half they played on the road in Seattle, and that is a pretty impressive finish.

          1. JackH.

I’m going to be watching as many of the Cardinal games as I possible. It appears they will be a force to be reckoned with.

          2. They’ll have to do a little better than “pretty impressive” if they want to participate in the playoffs……..

        2. Overall records vs 2013 playoff teams:

          Seahawks: 3-2
          Cardinals: 3-5
          49ers: 2-4

          1. By removing games against NFC West playoff teams the results are:

            Seahawks: 2-1 (Panthers W, Saints W, Colts L)
            Cardinals: 2-2 (Panthers W, Colts W, Saints L, Eagles L)
            49ers: 1-3 (Packers W, Colts L, Panthers L, Saints L)

            1. The Niners avenged the loss to the Panthers when it mattered. They also lost to the Colts early when they didn’t have two of their top receiving weapons for large portions of the game.

              1. The excuses go both ways. If not for a controversial call taking away a late interception in the Philly game, the Cardinals may have ended up 3-1 vs their playoff opponents.

              2. Which is why I said to Grant that you can do this with any team in multiple games, meaning his logic doesn’t hold up. It also doesn’t hold up here in your example. Each game is it’s own entity.

              3. “It also doesn’t hold up here in your example.”

What doesn’t hold up? All I am doing here is showing their records.

            2. Those records against playoff teams are a perfect example of variables needing to be considered when using stats ans indicators. One needs to factor in under which conditions those games were played. The injury factor and how it affected both teams. Teams rosters tend to fluctuate through out the year.

  6. # of wins
    # of losses
    points scored for and against….
None of this will matter if somehow
Coach Harbaw does not bring home
    Lombardi trophy #6 next year.

It is going to be a very long postseason.
How long? very, very long. Interminable.

  7. When Delanie Walker was here, his first year in Harbaugh’s offense he had 35 targets and 19 receptions. Fast forward, Vance McDonald in his first year in Harbaugh’s offense was targeted 19 times and only had 8 receptions. That is a 54% reduction in targets comparing their first years with the team.
Walker is 6’1″, McDonald is 6’5″ a much bigger target. McDonald also set school records with 8TD grabs in 2010. So why wasn’t McDonald targeted more his first year? He and Delanie both had to learn blocking assignments their first year.

    Is McDonald a bust?

Did Kaep lose faith in his after the big drop versus Carolina?

Did Harbaugh lose faith in him?

Or did Rom/baugh not know how to utilize him?

After all, McDonald was a WR coming out of college and very productive. He should have been a matchup nightmare if utilized properly. Especially in the red zone.

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1861143-revisiting-the-49ers-decision-to-go-with-vance-mcdonald-over-delanie-walker

Really hoping Carlos Hyde reverses our round two misfortunes……

    1. 2011 was Walker’s 6th season in the league. You’re comparing a ripe apple to one that is hasn’t blossomed.

      1. Ok Jack,
maybe a bit of an unfair comparison then. How do you explain 8 receptions though? I can pull up stats on tight ends that were picked in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th round that had much more productive years from a receiving perspective in 2013.

When you look at missed production, that positions lack of production really hurt our offense.

        1. “I can pull up stats on tight ends that were picked in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th round that had much more productive years from a receiving perspective in 2013.” Please do.

McDonald’s transition was made more difficult due to him rarely putting his hand down at Rice, while doing that quite often with the 49ers.

Regarding the loss in productivity from the position, Bruce Miller made up for a bit of that.

        2. McDonald’s head was swimming is my guess. Having to learn the blocking TE position when he was essentially playing WR at Rice is a tough transition. They also didn’t exactly give him many opportunities either. At his best, Delanie Walker only caught about 20 passes in this offense over the course of a season so it’s not like a huge drop in production especially when you consider Bruce Millers receptions as Jack pointed out.

        3. The need of some fans for rookies to be a solid contributor from day 1 leads to some unfair expectations. Some guys can come in and contribute straight away or near enough, some take more time. McDonald taking a bit more time to develop shouldn’t be a surprise given he was essentially being asked to play a different position to what he played in college.

It is well reported that most teams believe the biggest strides are generally made between the rookie year and 2nd season. Lets hold off labelling McDonald (or Tank, since you are talking about 2nd rounders) as busts just yet.

I have high hopes for McDonald as the 2nd TE this year. He played a lot of snaps last year, and if the coaches didn’t think he deserved it that wouldn’t have happened.

          1. Patience, you are suggesting patience Scooter? What a crazy thing to throw out there. I mean Walker was a stud from day one wasn’t he? Oh wait a minute…

    2. Bay

Delanie Walker had Alex Smith for a QB in his first year in Harbaugh’s system; McDonald had CK, so Alex was a more prolific passer than CK. Was the question just to go back to that old argument?

      1. Your comment makes no sense. And in our offense Smith was not a more prolific passer. Your bias shows through.
Delanie was actually immediately better with Kaep as his Qb.
But to answer your question, my statement was specific to the tight end production it’s had zero to do with Qb.

        1. @Bay

please let me know how the TE production can have zero to do with the QB? You’re quoting ‘targets, catches…etc, That my bias shows through is good….Ck isn’t as good as Alex. crap check last years stats….

    3. This is a terrible comparison. Walker was terrible his first few years. It has hard to compare a vet to a rookie.

      1. The comparison is to a degree a fair one. I am comparing their first year in Harbaugh’s offense. Although Jack makes a good point, he didn’t have to put his hands in a stance in college.

    4. How does McDonald’s 2013 blocking compare to Walker’s 2006 blocking?

    5. Walker’s SAK role might be one of the more complex ones next to QB and perhaps Center. I big rookie challenge. I’ thinking there was too much thinking and not enough reacting. It slowed his game. Very common for rookies.

The fact that he got more snaps then Celek is a compliment to his skills. We know the 49ers will sit rookies (LMJ, Jenkins) if they are not coming along.

SAK requires finesse skills like suckering defenders shooting gaps into the wrong direction. McDonald is huge. He seems more suited to traditional TE spot just outside the OT where he can road grade. A healthy Bruce Miller might free up McDonald to play his more natural position.

I’m expecting a faster, more instinctive McDonald in 2014.

  8. This is a simplistic way to compare the teams because they played completely different schedules. We beat sea and ari in the second half of the season. Our two losses were to playoff teams. We also ended the season on a 6 game winning streak. The arbitrary 8 game sample ignoring schedule is about the only way you could conclude we weren’t the hottest team in the division at the season’s end.

We had a harder draw to get to the NFC championship and then barely lost in Sea. We play that game at home and we win. Sea won the division by building a lead we couldn’t overcome- during the first 10 games of the season.

For those who look at these numbers and conclude Ari is our equal: we beat them in their house in week 17. I’m not saying they’re not a tough team, but as long as Carson Palmer is their qb they won’t be a serious threat.

      1. We beat the cardinals. In their house. We swept them on the year. Our last two losses of the regular season were in November. Arizona lost twice in December (as did Sea). We were 5-0.

Just looking at dec is arbitrary too, but we were two games better than Sea and Ari in the closing month of the regular season. Perhaps most significantly we beat both of those teams. We were the hottest team in the division to close the season and it’s not really debatable.

        1. Has anyone stated the 49ers weren’t the hottest team at the end of the year?

          1. Nobody stated it. But several posters including Grant are pushing stats that would support that argument. Which ignores the most important measure of all: head to head record.

        2. I’m not really sure where Grant was going with this but the Niners were the better team in division and beat Arizona and Seattle head to head in the second half of the season so they obviously were at or equal too the best in the division.

Arizona will be good again this year and the Rams will be better too. It’s a tough division, but the Niners and Seattle are the two best teams in the league imo, so until these other two show they can knock off the big dogs when it matters, it doesn’t make a difference what the others accomplished last season or what they can do this year.

          1. The Cardinals beat the Seahawks by 7 in Seattle at the end of the regular season, and the Cardinals had a better record against playoff teams last season than the 49ers. The Cardinals’ slow start really hurt their playoff chances, but they’re definitely good enough to make the playoffs next season.

            1. The Cardinals beat the Seahawks with Palmer throwing 4 interceptions. That was an anomaly. The record against playoff teams means nothing due to outlying factors during the season like Crabtree missing the first 11 games, or Davis missing time to due to injury.

All that matters is how the teams were playing at the end of the season and the Niners were clearly better than the Cardinals having beaten them in the final game of the season in Arizona.

              1. The only clear upgrade is Veldheer imo. The others are comparable and Dwyer is barely hanging on to an NFL career never mind and upgrade on Mendenhall.

Meanwhile the Niners will have a QB with another year of experience, throwing to a much better group of WR’s with a new stable of young RB’s augmenting the old man. The questions with the Niners will be how Culliver holds up, who replaces Bowman and whether/for how long, Aldon Smith gets suspended.

Talent wise this is still no contest in the Niners favor.

              2. The 49ers beat the Cardinals by three at the very end of the game Week 17. That game could have gone either way.

The Cardinals had a better point differential than the 49ers during the final eight regular season games last season.

              3. The Fitzgerald fumble was a huge break in the first game. Arizona had all of the momentum at that point.

              4. The 49ers beat the Cardinals by three at the very end of the game Week 17. That game could have gone either way.

You can say that about most games. Do you want to go through each game and talk about what if’s? The Niners have a number of them starting with the Saints.

The Cardinals had a better point differential than the 49ers during the final eight regular season games last season.

                Who cares. Means absolutely nothing.

              5. The Cardinals beat the Seahawks by seven points in Seattle four weeks before the 49ers lost by six points to the Seahawks in Seattle.

              6. “The Fitzgerald fumble was a huge break in the first game. ”

Sorry Jack, I call that a great play by Willis! Also, Arizona got the bigger break in that game by not facing Crabtree and Aldon in the entire game.

              7. Willis did make a nice play on the fumble. Doesn’t change the situation or point that Arizona was about to get into position to tie or take the lead despite the hole Palmer put then in at the start.

With Crabtree and Smith the 49ers were 3 points better.

              8. The Cardinals beat the Seahawks by seven points in Seattle four weeks before the 49ers lost by six points to the Seahawks in Seattle.

What’s your point Grant? Both offenses in that game were terrible, as were both QB’s. It was a strange game that normally Seattle would have won in a blowout considering all of the ints Palmer threw, but Wilson had a poor game as well. The game is played by humans, not robots. The only thing to hang your hat on is the head to head matchups and how each team ultimately finished their season.

If you want to try and predict how the division will unfold this year, you can start with the very real possibility that Seattle doesn’t make the playoffs. If recent history is any indication, the Seahawks are in for a fall this season.

              9. Two of Palmer’s interceptions occurred in the Seahawks end zone and a third was deep in Seattle’s end. Arizona dominated that game despite what the close score might indicate.

              10. Two of Palmer’s interceptions occurred in the Seahawks end zone and a third was deep in Seattle’s end. Arizona dominated that game despite what the close score might indicate.

The Cards defense dominated the Seattle offense. As I said earlier the game was an anomaly because the Seattle offense does not normally play that poorly at home. They could not get anything going that game.

              11. “The Cards defense dominated the Seattle offense.”

That’s generally the case when a team gives up less than 200 yards in total offense.

“As I said earlier the game was an anomaly because the Seattle offense does not normally play that poorly at home. They could not get anything going that game.”

You say that as if the Cardinals defense had nothing to do with it.

The Cardinals offense did a good job of moving the ball throughout the game with 307 yards of total offense, 1 fewer than the 49ers put together a few weeks later up there.

              12. “With Crabtree and Smith the 49ers were 3 points better.”

But won on the road and according to Grant, it was against a better Cardinal team since they have a better pts. differential than the niners at the 2nd half of last year :)

              13. The 49ers were a better team on the road throughout the year than they were at home.

              14. That’s generally the case when a team gives up less than 200 yards in total offense.

Not sure what your point is or why there is a condescending tone here. I agreed the defense dominated the Seattle offense. What’s your problem?

You say that as if the Cardinals defense had nothing to do with it.

The Cardinals offense did a good job of moving the ball throughout the game with 307 yards of total offense, 1 fewer than the 49ers put together a few weeks later up there.

Well considering the Seahawks hadn’t lost at home and blew out the Cards in Arizona, I’d say it’s an anomaly. The Cards put up 300 yards of offense because they had the ball for nearly 2 thirds of the game. They didn’t have a great offensive showing; they simply had the ball twice as much as Seattle because the Seahawks were having their worst offensive game of the season.

              15. The 49ers were a better team on the road throughout the year than they were at home.

They were 6-2 at home and 6-2 on the road. They faced a tougher home schedule than road schedule as well. They faced 4 playoff teams at home and two on the road.

              16. “They didn’t have a great offensive showing; they simply had the ball twice as much as Seattle because the Seahawks were having their worst offensive game of the season.”

Again, you say that like the Cardinals had nothing to do with it. The Cardinals defense shut them down. Part of the reason they dominated time of possession was they were able to stay committed to the run, and the play of the defense was a big reason.

              17. You said the Cards did a good job of moving the ball Jack and that is incorrect. Putting up 300 yards while having possession for nearly 40 minutes is not a good offensive showing. It’s a by product of the defense shutting the Seattle offense down completely and continually giving the ball back to the offense. Palmer had a lousy game and the running game averaged 3.2 yards a carry.

I have given the Cards defense credit for playing a great game. They were the clear reason for the win and it doesn’t happen often in that building.

              18. The Cardinals had 2 drives of 10+ plays and 75+ yards that accounted for 13:34 of possession time after opening the game with a 75 yard drive that ended in an interception in the end zone. They also had two shorter drives that resulted in field goals.

                Their offense moved the ball.

              19. Geezus you are as bad as Grant. Since when do a couple of drives constitute moving the ball well? We are talking about the entire game and how efficient the offense was. They did not move the ball well over the course of the game which is why they needed a drive at the end (aided by a penalty on 3rd down by Seattle) to win even though their defense dominated throughout. They averaged 4.4 yards a play. That is not a good offensive performance no matter how you want to spin it. An interception at the end of a drive is no different than at the beginning. If you turn it over it’s poor offensive play period.

              20. “Since when do a couple of drives constitute moving the ball well?”

3 drives of 75+ yards against the best defense in the league in their building is a pretty good start. The only other team to do that to the Seattle defense last season was Indianapolis.

              21. “They did not move the ball well over the course of the game which is why they needed a drive at the end (aided by a penalty on 3rd down by Seattle) to win even though their defense dominated throughout.”

Two interceptions in Seattle’s endzone had a little bit to do with that as well.

              22. The Cards scored 11 points and had over 100 yards of their total offense in the 4th quarter on a Seattle defense that was likely gassed by then due to being on the field most of the afternoon. You and I have very different ideas of what constitutes a good offensive performance. 4.4 yards a play doesn’t impress me. Neither does 3.2 yards a carry and a 4 interception game by the QB, but hey to each his own.

            2. With draft behind us and free agency mostly done, the real question should be have the Cardinals improved, have the 49ers improved, have the Seahawks improved?

Veldheer for Winston is an upgrade.
Larsen for Colledge is a wash.
              Cromartie for Powers slight upgrade.
Ginn upgrade in the return game.
Dwyer for Mendenhall is an upgrade. He was drafted by Steelers when Arians was there, so his kind of player.

            3. We started the season 6-4. We suffered from a “slow start” as well.

The cards were “good enough” to make the playoffs last year and likely will be next year as well. But they still have much to prove before they deserve comparison to SF and Sea. You can find stats which show their strength but ultimately we swept them last year and their flukey victory in Sea didn’t matter because they lost too many other games. Again, they lost twice in December. If they won out down the stretch and we dropped two games they would have been in the playoffs and they we would have been out.

              1. As long as they have Palmer, there will be opportunities for an interception and a big play. Just like Cutler…..

              2. I must admit I’m really not as enamoured with Bucannon as some are. I think he’s a guy that teams will exploit.

            4. >>The Cardinals’ slow start really hurt their playoff chances, but they’re definitely good enough to make the playoffs next season.

Maybe. You can’t always extrapolate a team’s success season to season. See 2012 to 2013 Houston and Atlanta as prime examples. Minnesota closed out 2012 on a 4 game winning streak, that really primed them for a 2013 playoff run, didn’t it?

    1. Mighty Joe: If you are underestimating the Cards, I think you are making a mistake. Their elite defense is even better since the draft. You don’t come to Seattle and win if your not something special.

Watching them play Seattle they swarmed and flew around the field. Listening to PCarroll’s last 2 press conferences he kept on reiterating how how happy he was with the Seahawk’s speed. The 49ers & Seahawks are going to have to up their games. Just MHO.

  9. Who gives a *&$^ about the past season? Every season is a new one, and for the upcoming one, the esteemed Mike Tanier has appointed the Niners at the top of his Hope Index:
    http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/76751244/mandatory-monday-hope-index-rankings-san-francisco-49ers-seattle-seahawks#!Q5GAr
“The 49ers have come so close for three years, and had such a productive offseason, that hope may give way to a kind of flop sweat. If they don’t win, what secret deficiency is holding them back? That kind of neurosis can be controlled with medication: this is the best team in the NFL entering training camp, with all the depth, breadth and youth a sports organization planning to sustain success for a decade could ask for.”
Tanier needs to specify the right medication for Grant’s neurosis!

  10. Hey Coffee, the 49ers finally signed an outside linebacker from Stanford for you….

    1. I think Coffee may have made good on his comment about leaving for pastures new… I don’t recall hearing from him since then.

          1. Thats comical coming from the guy who has been arguing that the Cardinals were better than the 9ers in the second half of last season.

  11. Niners sign LB Chase Thomas (Stanford) ..

According to this article .. he’s got some
    fairly decent college stats …

Could this be a good move, or is he just some more camp fodder ?

    guys ?

      1. thanx, rocket ..
I suppose you’re right … but, I wonder about the salary cap
ya know with all these players the Niners have signed
        this off season …
or … is Paraag the second coming of Carmen Policy ?

        1. They are fine with the cap MW. They get 6.6 million in cap space on June 1st, and have all but two of their draft picks signed. Marathe is one of the best Cap guys in the biz. Nothing to worry about.

  12. All these stats are just more roto geek mentality. It will all come down to how many games each teams starters miss [injury or suspension] and no one will know those #’s untill the season is over, untill then its nothing more than mental masturbation.

      1. No, but ED will pay you a visit from over analyzing the situation. Just remember, There’s Only One Way To Rock!!!!!! Nice one Old Coach!

      2. No, but ED will pay you a visit from over analyzing the situation. Just remember, There’s Only One Way To Rock!!!!!! Nice one Old Coach!

      3. Jack i have’nt yet so i think my mother may have been lieing to me all those years ago

  13. Who cares about stats, what matters are wins and loses for the whole season and not just the back half.

If the 49ers beat the Panthers during the regular season OR Seattle loses to the RAMS or the Texans (like they should have) the 49ers get home field advantage and win the Super Bowl, it is simple as that.

The last time Seattle won at SF was 2008…that team is only dominate at home

    1. John..
I believe the phantom hit on Drew Breese caused
us to lose home field advantage ! …

(I’m still ticked off about that one)

      1. there were a lot of these “phantom” hits and calls against the 49ers all season and of course especially during the championship game. I just really look at the games where they had tons of opps and the Panthers one really sticks out at me to win since they had it twice within the 5 yard line and only got 3 points.

If they kick the field instead of trying to throw for a TD we are the #1 seed and win the Super Bowl. The Seattle fans would have nothing still

  14. According to various reports Alex Boone is seeking a new deal and skipping OTA’s.

      1. @mattbarrows 38m
Alex Boone not happy with current contract and likely will miss voluntary OTAs. Question is whether he will miss mandatory minicamp June 16.

        @BWilliamsonESPN 41m
#49ers Guard Alex Boone not attending voluntary OTAS. He wants a new contract. He has two seasons left on deal.

        1. What a Goone…I thought he was better than that! Let Jonathan Martin take over who is probably better anyways!

          1. John its a business. Just remember how the owners hid the seriousness of the concussion issue for years then tell me Boone should’nt look out for #1. His family may need that money to care for him if\when dementia sets in.

      1. I’m not sure about a new deal, bay. I agree that he’s a valuable member of the OL but you have to consider Staley’s contract if you’re giving Boone more money. Staley plays a premier position in all of football and he’s considered one of the best at what he does, and right now the 49ers are getting a bargain for his service. I don’t know how Staley would feel about his contract if Boone gets more money.

  15. Alex Boone…you would think the dude would keep his promise considering the 49ers taking a chance on him given his off field issues but I guess he has not changed. Two years left on his contract? What a hole.

    1. I agree, they took a chance on him. Kept him around, they rewarded him early and now he wants out and thinks he deserves more…Why not play out your final two years and try and cash in. I am sure this makes Baalke and JH want to reward the guy. They should trade him and play martin at G.

      1. Doesn’t matter Grimey. He took a long term deal when the team offered it. He got that deal based on potential and now that he’s reached it doesn’t mean they will rip it up. Doesn’t work that way, at least with two years remaining it doesn’t. He will have to play this year out under the old terms.

        1. I’m not talking about leverage, cause he has none. I’m talking about this idea that athletes have to be loyal to teams when it’s almost never reciprocated. Why do some fans get so mad at players who want to get compensated properly for their work?

Also OTA’s are optional everybody. Relax.

      2. Boone and his agent thought they had a great deal when they signed originally. Players and their agents need to think more than just about the present time when they sign and think about what the deal is going to look like down the road in 3 or 4 years. Have some accelerators or incentives written into the contract so it will go up based on performances, snaps played, etc.

    2. I agree. Screw him. It’s like he went and watched rocky 5 and went tommy gunn all of a sudden. 2 stinking years left, and would have no football career if it hadn’t of been for the 49ers taking a shot on him. I’m suprised he would pull this crap.
      Take a hike. Boone!

  16. That Brandon Thomas pick (in the late 3rd round?) is looking better now. I hope they can work out a way to keep both sides (Boone and Niners) happy so Boone stays put, but It’s nice to have options. The way I understand it, Thomas was slated to be a possible 1st round pick before his injury so he may turn out to be a steal.

  17. Boone has no leverage so he probably won’t get a new deal until next year at the earliest, if then. He’s signed for two more years and doesn’t get paid if he holds out so not much he can do other than miss the voluntary stuff.

  18. Here’s what else Barrows said regarding Boone:
The 49ers have an unusual situation on the offensive line in that their top player there, left tackle Joe Staley, signed a long extension early in his career and is making only a modest salary – $2.7 million in base pay – this season. Therefore it’s difficult to pay other worthy linemen like Boone and fellow starting guard Mike Iupati, more than the left tackle. (The team already hiked up right tackle Anthony Davis’ salary in the offseason).

If the story is true, I can’t blame Boone. He might be able to start at left tackle for another team and be highly rewarded. But also I can’t blame the team. And they are deep at guard. I remember when Boone replaced Staley for a game, Looney took his place and did well. Looking forward, if he holds out — and the story is far from that — they might be able to trade him for a decent pick in next year’s draft.

      1. I was thinking even before today the 49ers might have to choose between Boone and Iupati.

I go back and forth on this. Boone is very underpaid, but of the 49ers didn’t take a chance on him he might be making alot less bagging groceries

This is why I’m for a soft salary cap. Depending on position, re-signing players a team drafted should cost 90% less against the cap years 5-6, 80% against the cap Years 7-9, 70% against the cap years 10 and on.

The formula should vary for extra long/short longevity positions like Kicker (long) and running back (shorter).

        1. I’d add that one player’s(franchise player) salary should only count for half or a once per team veteran clause that would help keep Rice a niner, smith a cowboy and other players home. Like a loyalty clause.

    1. If this is all true, it is up to him if he wants to play this coming year with the contract he is under. If he wants to make more, he will be traded. They will not pay him the big bucks…sorry guys!

      1. BTW, it would not be Looney, it would be Snyder that takes his spot.

This is one area they are NOT short on talent…they are deep, especially with Jonathan Martin and Marcus Martin now on the team.

    2. In 2015, the 49ers will already have Looney, Martin/ Kilgore (depending on which one ends up at centre) and Brandon Thomas battling for Iupati’s LG spot (I’m assuming Iupati is a goner as it would seem very unlikely he stays). If Boone becomes an issue either this year or next, they have the depth to replace him too.

I doubt they rework his deal. If they do, I doubt it will be a big bump up in pay.

      1. I’m guessing its a little like dominoes. The 49ers are examining several major contracts. When the first major one is finally done (likely Kaepernick’s), they cap situation will clarify. Then the remaining contracts can get re-done, with a few (likely Crabtree and perhaps Iupati) hitting the road. They will wait on Aldon.

  19. Am I the only one who thinks miller will make our running game a monster again? When he went down our running attack suffered. I think miller is the biggest kept secret for our offense. Huge piece for ck too.
Stay healthy and no defense will stop our offense next season. Bank on it!
And Grant wasn’t miller out for the games you’re talking about?

  20. He was the last one in the green room, and now M&M is the last rookie yet to sign….

      1. MWNiner, I didn’t even bother to read Tim’s latest article because I refuse to support anything he touches.

        1. I hear ya, ricardo ..

(almost had to go scrub my keyboard
          after posting that link)

    1. “San Jose Mercury News columnist Tim Kawakami deserves praise. He’s the one who took on 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh over the team’s reaction to linebacker Aldon Smith’s legal issues. In a group interview before the 49ers’ weekend rookie camp, Kawakami challenged Harbaugh on whether the 49ers would ever discipline Smith after he pleaded no contest to two DUIs and gun charges.

It’s rare that a journalist has the courage to risk condemnation from fans, from the coach and from the team to get answers. Kawakami had that courage.”

      http://blog.sfgate.com/49ers/2014/05/27/journalist-takes-on-jim-harbaugh-over-aldon-smith/

      1. Speaking of Mr. Lynch, what’s the “standard” at KNBR? 10 DUIs? Does KNBR have a standard for how many DUIs a radio host can get and still remain on the air?

What’s the standard for KNBR management? 4 age discrimination lawsuits? Were any KNBR executives punished or fired for discriminating against one of their employees based on his age?

How about slop-swinging references? Or are those only bad if your major sponsor objects? And once your sponsor stops objecting you rehire the guy you fired.

I just saw the Xmen movie, interesting to find out the director was accused of raping underage males. You think 20th Century Fox was going to delay the release?

If Kawakami would have just asked straightforward polite questions he could have gotten the answer from Harbs quite simply. Aldon is out of strikes. That’s what his last sentence meant. Maybe Kawakami should have been doing his real job and asking Harbs about the Boone holdout instead of trying to make himself look good.

      2. Jack, for a minute there I thought you were quoting the President of the United States. Then I checked and saw it was Kevin Lynch. IMO, only sports journalists would write in such glorious terms about themselves.

        1. I guess that makes me a sports journalist too since I agree with everything Lynch wrote there.

          1. You certainly have the “writing in glorious terms about yourself” angle covered.

            1. I blame it my grandmother’s needlepoint that read “It’s hard to be humble when you’re as great as I am.”

              1. The sad part is, it’s not that good and there are others who express their opinions as well if not better.

          2. Well, you do publish articles, so you qualify. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion. I consider Aldon immature but not sociopathic. The only one bordering on sociopathic is Culliver, in my opinion.

      3. Courage? Courage? What a bunch of crap. Where is there courage in asking a question? Firemen have courage. Policemen show courage. Men and women in the military possess courage. Kawakami asked a question. Whether you agree with his line of questioning or not it did’nt take a single drop of courage to ask . I generally like Kevin Lynch but what he wrote regarding Kawakami was embarrassing. What a load of crap.

        1. Agree with Old Coach. It does not take courage to ask “But, do you want your players to be above reproach legally, criminally”?? All it takes to ask a question like that is pure foolishness…..

        2. Couldn’t agree more old coach. Lynch is coming to the defense of a colleague who is getting ripped in the public eye, but it’s out of line to describe it as being courageous.

What I’m trying to figure out is why this was a hot topic for Kawakami in the first place? I don’t think it was a surprise that Smith took a plea deal, in fact I’m sure that is what has been expected all along, so why would he think the team is going to punish him knowing they expected this? Nothing has really changed from last season other than the Airport incident that at worst will be a misdemeanor so what exactly is Kawakami expecting them to do? This is truly looking like a man with a bruised ego over info he reported that was wrong, trying to restore his respectability.

            1. What do you know about how the 49ers handled the last 18 months? All you know is about playing time. You are TOTALLY ignorant of any and all employee relations between Aldon Smith or any other players and the 49er organization. If I recall correctly, Aldon Smith went to rehab. I believe HIPAA laws prevent the 49ers from discussing anything about Aldon’s condition or his punishment. Why would the 9ers discuss anything about these players in public anyway. Sounds like you basically want someone cut or you want them suspended. Do you really believe that if some other player like Culliver were cut or suspended that would have prevented the situations experienced by the other players.

Kawakami is a jerk looking to put himself in the story, period. What exactly is the role of the reporter? He wasn’t looking to get answers or he would have asked a question that had a chance of getting an answer. He knew what Harbaughs reaction was going to be before he provoked him. If he really wanted answers from the team he would have asked the question in a much more effective way.

            2. It’s about how they have handled the last 18 months.

The only questionable decision they’ve made in that time is allowing Smith to play the weekend after wrapping his car around a tree. That one deserved scrutiny and it got it. What is the point of antagonizing the HC right before mini camps on a topic that is still fluid and a plea deal expected for some time? There is nothing new in the Smith story other than he finally had his day in court. The plea deal was expected so why would Kawakami expect Smith’s situation to change?

I don’t take offense to tough questions, but Kawakami had an agenda here and it’s obvious in both the topic and tone of the questions.

              1. The 2015 option was also a questionable decision.

How is asking if Smith will be there to open camp a bad question? It’s fair to ask since he will be in court for sentencing the following day.

              2. The 2015 option was also a questionable decision.

No it wasn’t, in fact it was an obvious decision. If they don’t pick up the 5th year then they are looking at 3-4 million more on a franchise tag to keep him. They also can release him without any consequences as long as he’s not injured. There isn’t a team in the league who wouldn’t have done the same thing because the bottom line is this is a business, and that was the sound business decision.

How is asking if Smith will be there to open camp a bad question? It’s fair to ask since he will be in court for sentencing the following day.

That was not the line of questioning that was a problem. This is the question that was uncalled for and antagonistic:

So, what’s your standard then? Is 10 felony counts the standard? Do you have a standard for what players can and cannot do?

There is nothing in that question other than condemnation of integrity. That was nothing but Kawakami’s own self serving nonsense.

              3. “If they don’t pick up the 5th year then they are looking at 3-4 million more on a franchise tag to keep him.”

Not true. The difference between the franchise tag and the transition tag for a LB this season is $1.7 million, and likely to be around $2 million next season.

“They also can release him without any consequences as long as he’s not injured.”

That’s a big risk that they wouldn’t have taken on by waiting a year.

“So, what’s your standard then? Is 10 felony counts the standard? Do you have a standard for what players can and cannot do?”

By playing Smith against Indianapolis and rewarding him by picking up his option they’ve shown they either don’t have one or that it’s very low. So what is the standard?

              4. @ Hammer

Are you freaking kidding me? Picking up Smith’s option was the best option for the team and quite frankly it was a no-brainer. Baalke and York would have been imbeciles to make any other decision than the one they made. So the variance on the franchise tag is only $2MM — Oh wow thats all? You should pony that up for the team since it’s such a small amount of money. Jeez. Smith shouldn’t have played against Indi but other than that I have ZERO problems with how the 9ers have handled Smith.

Let’s not forget that Aldon Smith is a very young man who needs support instead of vengeance. I’m sure the 9ers are trying to protect their investment but I also believe in the goodness of most humans and I have to believe that some people in the organization actually care about the young man and doing what’s best for him. Cutting him or publicly crucifying the young man would not be helpful for anyone – but I guess that would make you and Tim Kawakami feel better. If I have to chose sides I’m going with Aldon and the 9ers over you two.

              5. Not true. The difference between the franchise tag and the transition tag for a LB this season is $1.7 million, and likely to be around $2 million next season.

I took a guess at what it would be. 2 million is 2 million though, especially with a cap and a lot of people to sign.

That’s a big risk that they wouldn’t have taken on by waiting a year.</i

It's a risk worth taking to save money against the cap, and to save the franchise tag if needed elsewhere.

By playing Smith against Indianapolis and rewarding him by picking up his option they’ve shown they either don’t have one or that it’s very low. So what is the standard?

We are talking about why Kawakami is getting killed in the court of public opinion. The quote I bolded and the tone it was asked in, is the reason and it’s warranted. He was antagonizing and continued on after Harbaugh had told him he wouldn’t give any more info on it. It’s obvious his ego was bruised after he wrote articles detailing a sources inside info on how the Niners wouldn’t pick up the 5th year option, and then the opposite happened.

The Niners did what every other team in this league would do in picking up the option. There is no team above reproach when it comes to giving great players chances. Should Harbaugh have made the comments he did about Seattle? Perhaps not, but holding him to a standard that is unrealistic and hijacking a press conference in doing so was uncalled for.

              6. “I’ve never said that Smith should be cut or crucified.”

So then what do YOU think the 9ers should have done?

              7. “So then what do YOU think the 9ers should have done?”

I think they should have sent Smith to rehab instead of the practice field on the day he wrapped his truck around a tree, paid him his full game check and moved on from there.

They should have held off on the 5th year option by dangling a bigger carrot if he could actually stay clean for 12 months.

When Harbaugh was asked if the team has standards, instead of blowing off the question he should have said, “Yes we have standards that we expect all of our players to reach. We have players like Patrick Willis, Joe Staley, and Justin Smith who are great examples of what all our players should strive to achieve both on and off the field.”

              8. They did send Smith to rehab. Do you honestly believe Smith did that on his own? I am certain the team was instrumental in the decision to force Smith into rehab where he was lost for 5 weeks. And they did it when the team was struggling and they really needed him. Trent Baalke said, “The 49ers’ organization both respects and supports Aldon’s decision and commends him for taking responsibility for his actions. The long-term well-being of our players is paramount and we will stand by Aldon as he works toward addressing this issue.”

Picking up Smith’s option was a no-brainer. It was a business decision that needed to be made and the 9ers made that decision with the best interests of the club in mind. Trying to influence long term behavior by neglecting to pick up his option would have been a stupid decision. He was playing for the team during the Option year no matter what. If they had to franchise him then it would have been more expensive.

Kawakami’s tone and verbiage forced a terse response from Harbaugh. Had someone like Maiocco asked a more professional question I’m sure Harbaugh would have had a response very similar to the one you just wrote. Kawakami’s question wasn’t designed to get an answer. It was designed to get a reaction whether you want to acknowledge that fact or not.

              9. “They did send Smith to rehab.”

I know they did, right after making sure they got every ounce out of Smith by putting out there for every defensive snap.

Perhaps you should try reading my response again. I said they should have sent Smith to rehab INSTEAD of playing him against Indy.

“He was playing for the team during the Option year no matter what.”

Even if he gets into more trouble?

              10. I agree he shouldn’t have played against Indy and I said so in a previous post. You act like the 9ers “got every ounce out of Smith” by playing him against Indy but you completely ignore the fact that the 9ers supported him in going to rehab and did so at a time when they really needed him on the field. This isn’t some tragedy where they used up a resource and then discarded him. The 9ers probably made a bad decision in playing him in one game but they did the right thing by supporting his time in rehab and he even missed more time than expected and the club supported that too.

If Smith gets into more trouble then he’s probably done with the 9ers but picking up his option has nothing to do with that. The 9ers would franchise him or pick up his option. Either way, they would have a contract with Aldon Smith. If Smith gets into more trouble then he wouldn’t be playing out either contract. Are you aware of the details in his current contract? Is there an out for the 9ers if Smith is convicted or crimes which prevent him from fulfilling his responsibilities under his contract? I would say every NFL contract has such language.

              11. “I agree he shouldn’t have played against Indy and I said so in a previous post.”

So why do you keep debating the issue?

“You act like the 9ers “got every ounce out of Smith” by playing him against Indy”

No acting, just facts. He played every defensive snap in that game.

“but you completely ignore the fact that the 9ers supported him in going to rehab and did so at a time when they really needed him on the field.”

I’m not ignoring it, just simply stating that the rehab should have been placed ahead of him playing. And you’ve agreed with me so it should be a non-issue.

“If Smith gets into more trouble then he’s probably done with the 9ers but picking up his option has nothing to do with that.”

Sure it does. What happens if he is injured this season, and during rehab gets arrested yet again? Since January 2012, Smith has not shown an ability to stay out of trouble. They will be stuck paying him the $9.75 million option.

“Are you aware of the details in his current contract? Is there an out for the 9ers if Smith is convicted or crimes which prevent him from fulfilling his responsibilities under his contract? I would say every NFL contract has such language.”

The Patriots were able to void the guaranteed money for Hernandez, but still had cap hits of $2.55 million in 2013 and $7.5 million this coming season.

              12. Pats owed Hernandez guaranteed bonus money but refused to pay. I’d be surprised if at some point he doesn’t sue them for it.

        3. Thank you old coach! I wanted to say the same thing about using the word “courage” by Lynch but haven’t had a time to say so. +1000000000 to your post!

      4. “Can only use franchise tag once, what about Kap?”

What about him? They’ve already said it would be done by training camp. Everyone is onboard, they even met in a corner booth at the combine.

        1. No that’s Grants faulty analysis. Actual reporting was that the two side were far apart prior to talks ending due to the Miami incident. Jed said he was confident either a contract would get done or both side would agree to negotiate after the season without animosity. Despite what your grandmother told you, you are not smarter than Paarge (sp?). Trent and Paarge have a plan, you and Kawakami have self-serving outrage. Thankfully, Trent and Paarge are running the show. (as long as Paarge isn’t handling gameday clock situations)

          1. Grant never said that. It’s actually a cobbling together of various comments made by another commentor who is a BIG Kaepernick head.

            1. Grant said that Harbs was acting as Kap’s agent. When I pressed Grant in the comments to that article he wouldn’t even acknowledge the fact that any extension for Kap would require concessions in the contract structure that favor the 49ers. Still doesn’t magically create 2 franchise tags.

              1. You missed the point. My comment above had nothing to do with Grant in any way and everything to do with comments made by another commentor on the matter.

              2. I guess your only response to my point is to change the subject. Very telling. Gotta run, Humm Baby Go Giants!

              3. To be fair, your grandma’s quilt line was hilarious. Don’t fret over the possibility of Aldon getting hurt then in trouble again. If that were to happen, no way Goodell lets Aldon cash the 10M check. He suspends Aldon during that season and Aldon gets nothing.

          2. York, Baalke and Harbaugh all said they wanted to get it done before TC. York has said Kap deserves to be among the highest paid QB’s in the game. The issue is cap money more than anything. Until June 1st, they don’t have room to do anything. We’ll see what happens after that date.

  21. It’s also relevant to note that AZ and STL played 4 of those 8 games against playoff teams, while SEA played only 2 games against playoff teams, while SF played 3 of those 8 games against playoff teams. Possible implication being that 2014 will be a year for an even tougher NFC West.

  22. NEWS FLASH 4 hrs. ago

    Danny Kelly @FieldGulls · 4h
Percy Harvin, Earl Thomas in punt returner competition, injury updates, and more news from Seahawks’ OTAs http://sbn.to/Sd7zU6

    1. Please be stupid enough to put Thomas back to field punts. Playoffs, but regular season….most unlikely.

  23. Damn, Sean Lee is all over the headlines….What’s the big deal man? The Cowgirl D is so pathetic, I guess it makes Lee look pretty good. ESPN and NFL Network are still in love with Dallas!
I hope Sean Lee makes a full recovery but I also hope we kick the livin crap out of Jerry’s boys week 1!!

    1. Sean Lee must be made of glass. He missed 15 out of the last 32 games due to injury and now he’ll extend the streak to 31 out of 48 games. Suck’s for “The Boys” but it’s hard to feel sorry for them and/or JJ. I do feel bad for Sean Lee though. He has a big black cloud hovering over his head that just might end his career.

    1. I would think if a deal gets done it would be close to his last deal… maybe a bit more guaranteed to pretty it up. I think the absolute most he squeezes out of them would be 10mil/yr. Maybe that’s what he’s fighting for.

I could also see them letting him play out his contract and letting him walk depending on his performance. I hope he gets his deal though, he deserves it. I also wonder how much confidence they have in Murray. That should be interesting.

      1. wasn’t Alex’s very first 49er contract
        something like 49 Million/ 5 yrs ? ..
And how much has he received since then ..?
(adding both from the Niners as well as the Chiefs)

(Not trying to denigrate Alex.. but just curious about
how much he’s made since 2005)

        1. He made a lot of money on his first deal but since then has been in the bottom 3rd of QB salaries. As I mentioned below the problem as I see it is in the fact QB’s who haven’t even made the playoffs are getting huge deals. If you are Alex Smith and see Cutler getting 18-19 mill then why wouldn’t you expect the same or more?

    2. NFL.com is reporting that the Chiefs are willing to use the franchise tag next season if necessary so I don’t think it’s a matter of not seeing him as their QB going forward. My guess is Smith’s agent – Tom Condon I believe – is asking for Cutler money and the Chiefs are balking at it. That contract has really put a wrench into QB negotiations in general imo because it rewarded a QB who has accomplished nothing with upper tier money.

The part I really find funny is the reports that the Chiefs are playing hardball because they have Aaron Murray waiting in the wings. Such high praise for a limited player coming off of injury. Murray is not a starter in this league imo and I highly doubt he is playing any part in this negotiation. My guess is they eventually get something done, but who knows?

        1. It’s possible Razor but I don’t see it personally. Murray is extremely limited physically from what I’ve seen in size, mobility and arm strength. He’s gutty I’ll give him that, but I don’t see NFL starter quality here. He reminds me a lot of Kellen Moore. Good College players because of instincts and intelligence, but the physical limitations make them borderline NFL players.

    3. Jason Cole @JasonPhilCole · 34m

Back in January, I know that #chiefs QB Alex Smith wanted a deal above Jay Cutler (7 yr, $126M). I can’t imagine that has changed.

  24. Wow, I just got back from a mini-vacation and don’t see several of the regulars. Where is CFC, Brotha Tuna and MidWest Dynasty? And no Claude, either. Hopefully, all are just on vacation, too.

I do see we have a new contibutor that appears to be a seahawk fan, though.

    1. All but Brotha Tuna have been put on IR. Brotha is currently slated for the PUP list, but that is yet to be determined…..

      1. Rocket, yeah, it’s that time of year. Trips, spring-cleaning, getting the garden ready, etc.

    2. Space – Like Rocket said, not much going on. Although Aaron Hernandez makes Aldon look like a choir boy in comparison. He wacked a minimum of 3 people so far. I believe he was questioned about two murders during his college days in Florida too. He probably put cement shoes on the two people who were murdered in Florida. Hernandez took them on a one way fishing trip. So he leads O.J. 5-2 in my opinion. …. I guess he’s too stupid to hire a hit man.

        1. Razor, speaking of gardening, I was just fixing a loose fence board this morning and got a peek into my new neighbor’s back yard and saw several of your favorite plants, lol.

          1. Razor hasn’t cornered the market on that
kind of “favorite”, Space .. ;)

            Btw .. Welcome back !

            1. Thanks, MWN. That kind of gardening goes on quite a bit around where I live in both large and small scale. It’s kind of funny, though, when I lived in the Central Valley, I was used to seeing the transient farmworkers come in at harvest time, but up here in the mountains, you see the transient bud trimmers start showing up about the same time you start smelling the “dankness.” They get paid prettty well from what I understand, lol.

              1. If you’re talking about where I think you’re talking..
I can confirm what you say ..
My brother makes the best wine in the world
                from up there

          2. Yea, I remember I acquired some Fallbrook goodness when I lived out in California. Almost made me puke, it was so good, and the expansion properties were quite apparent…..

            1. Razor, seems that Girl Scout Cookies are pretty popular these days. I can’t keep track of all the other names I hear locally.

        1. Lol…I actually watch that show…..The Loch Ness episode was a disappointment though.

          1. Crabs, River Monsters is one of those shows that you find yourself watching that friends laugh at when you tell them about it — and then the next thing you know, they’re watching it too.

      1. Crab
The guy “bumped in to him spilling his drink” and got shot for it, Could you imagine if he had “stepped on his shoe scuffing it up a bit”? Hernandez would have burned that whole place down. And now cops think that he memorialized the double murder by inking it on his right forearm. From getting busted by your own surveilance system to tattooing your two murder victims on ur arm this guy offers a level of criminal stupidity rarely seen in sports. In fact I cant think of a bigger “menace to society” ever in the sports world.

        1. Bos49er – I thoroughly enjoyed your post. Only the O.J. dream team could’ve saved this scumbag.

  25. I’m looking forward to Grant’s coverage of today’s OTA. I’d rather get back to that kind of football discussion. Not that there hasn’t been some good ones going on, but for me this is the time of year that I get like to hear news about players on the field, not off of it.

    1. Let me spare you the anticipation…

Kaepernick sucks and still cant hit the side of a barn…in the pocket.

      Culliver is awful.

      Gore’s is old.

      Stevie Johnson is slow

      Vernon Davis can’t run routes

…and the seahawks own the division…followed by the Cardinals…and Niners and Rams are tied for 3rd

        1. You’re right I apologize…

I forgot to add….Lattimore still walks like a man with no burst… his career is over

        1. Never mind. Sorry, I’m a little slow today. Now I get it, you were reporting for Grant, right?

      1. Razor ..
maybe you should go over to Space’s house ..
        then climb the fence ..

        (around midnight, of course)

        1. No. I’ve been ripped off several times, and I know how it feels. I would never do that….

  26. Hammer says “No it hadn’t”. “That was the first time that question has been asked”. What about the prior dumb Aldon Smith questions and their tone? At the point he asks your question, the bridge across the plowed ground had been burnt…..

    1. Wow, that was a pretty toss from the old guy. Do player-coaches count against the 53, I wonder?

      1. I think another question , Space ..
        would be ..

Would you feel better with Harbs over Gabbert
        at the 2nd string ?

  27. And like that, Luke Marquardt clears waivers and rejoins the 49ers on their reserved/injured list.

  28. Per Matt Barrows (@mattbarrows):

#49ers OTA ends with a Marcus Lattimore run. He looks good, albeit in a no-full pads, no- hitting context.

  29. Per Taylor Price (@TaylorPrice49):

Play of the day: @Kaepernick7 post corner TD to Brandon Lloyd vs. P Cox in red zone team period.

#49ers RB @MarcusLattimore caught a few short passes, practiced with no knee brace.

    1. I miss football…

Good to hear about Lattimore. He must have a lot confidence in his knee if he’s not wearing a knee brace. He just has to get his strength back and he will hopefully get that burst back….can’t wait.

      1. I’m very surprised he’s not wearing a knee brace, even if it is no contact atm. But definitely a good sign. I really hope for his sake he recovers fully, or close enough to fully. Sounds like a good guy.

  30. Sounds like Brandon Lloyd really impressed today. He may still have something left in the tank after all.

If he’s a viable option at WR then the battle at WR during camp is going to be epic. Would they keep all four of Crabtree, Boldin, Johnson and Lloyd? I’d be surprised if they did, which means there may be some WR needy team come a-sniffin’ down the track (e.g., Browns).
