NFL Draft Live Blog: Day 2

SANTA CLARA — Here’s the live blog for rounds 2 and 3 of the NFL Draft. I’ll be updating frequently from the Niners press trailer.

4:07 The Rams draft WR Brian Quick with pick No. 1 of the 2nd round. I’m shocked how many receivers are getting drafted ahead of Rueben Randle, Stephen Hill and Alshon Jeffery. I find it hard to believe that Quick will be better than those three guys.

4:09 The Colts draft Coby Fleener. I’m ready to make my prediction for offensive rookie of the year: Andrew Luck.

4:12 Here’s another prediction: The Colts will win more games than the Redskins in 2012.

4:15 The Ravens draft OLB Courtney Upshaw with the third pick of the second round. Very strong pick. The Ravens could challenge the Niners for the best defense in the league this year.

4:21 The Broncos draft DT Derek Wolfe with the fourth pick in the second round. The Broncos drafted for need with that pick.

4:26 With the fifth pick in the second round the Browns draft RT Mitchell Schwartz from Cal instead of LT Jonathan Martin from Stanford. Who predicted that one?

4:30 Next, the Jaguars draft pass rusher Andre Branch. Lots of good guards and cornerbacks are still on the board for the 49ers.

4:31 There’s goes the best corner available. With the seventh pick in the second round the Rams draft Janoris Jenkins. They had the worst cornerbacks in the NFL last season. Now with Jenkins and Cortland Finnegan, the Rams could have two of the best.

4:33 The Panthers draft OG Amini Silatolu. The guards and the corners are starting to come off the board.

4:36 The Bills draft OG Cordy Glenn with the ninth pick of the second round. That’s a great pick for them. They needed a offensive lineman and they got top-20 talent in the second round.

4:39 The Dolphins draft Jonathan Martin. It’s a run on offensive lineman!

4:42 The Jets trade into the Seahawks spot at pick No. 43 and pick WR Stephen Hill to replace Plaxico Burress. I don’t understand why Rueben Randle is falling – he’s going to be a very good NFL split end.

4:53 The Chiefs draft OG Jeff Allen. The run on offensive lineman continues. If Baalke wants to draft a guard who could potentially start from Day 1, he’d better trade up soon.

4:55 The Bears draft Alshon Jeffery with the 45th pick. I don’t like that pick for them. They needed a faster wide receiver to complement Brandon Marshall.

4:59 The Eagles draft inside linebacker Mychal Kendricks from Cal. That’s when you draft a middle linebacker. I like the pick.

5:07 Another inside linebacker – the Seahawks draft Bobby Wagner. Good pick.

5:10 The Patriots draft S Tavon Wilson with the 48th pick. They needed a safety – they lost the Super Bowl because their free safety couldn’t get over to Manningham on the sideline in time to break up The Pass.

5:13 And then the Chargers draft DT Kendall Reyes. Here’s another second round player who will probably have a better career than A.J. Jenkins.

5:17 The Rams draft RB Isaiah Pead with the 50th pick. Bad pick. He’ll do nothing against the Niners. Good guards are falling to the Niners – Osemele, Brooks and Konz.

5:24 The Packers trade with the Eagles for pick No. 51 and select DT Jerel Worthy from Michigan St. The next Gilbert Brown. They still need a pass rusher and offensive linemen.

5:29 The Titans draft OLB Zach Brown with the 52nd pick.

5:33 The Bengals draft DT Devon Still. I like the Bengals approach to this draft. They needed a wide receiver but they’re waiting to draft one.

5:36 With Rueben Randle dropping this far, the A.J. Jenkins pick looks even more questionable. They could have traded up for David DeCastro or drafted Cordy Glenn in the first round and drafted Randle in the second.

5:39 The Lions draft slot receiver Ryan Broyles with the 54th pick. I don’t like this one. Jarius Wright and Joe Adams are better slot receivers.

5:44 The Falcons draft Peter Konz.

5:44 The Steelers draft OT Mike Adams. Two more first round talents taken late in the second round.

5:46 The Broncos draft QB Brock Osweiler. They needed to draft Manning a running back or a receiver.

5:53 The Bucs trade up with the Texans for pick No. 58 and select Lavonte David. Two more picks and the Niners are up.

5:58 The Eagles draft Vinny Curry and the Ravens draft Kelechi Osemele. The Niners are on the clock.

6:09 With their second round pick, the Niners draft RB LaMichael James from Oregon. The Niners got their own Darren Sproles. That’s a great draft pick. I love it. He will be a terrific check down target for Smith.

6:15 Evan Silva just tweeted: “RB Anthony Dixon could probably be had for a seventh-round pick tomorrow.”

6:16 With the last pick in the second round the Giants pick Rueben Randle. That’s a great draft pick. The Giants are still going to be tough this season.

6:53 With the 12th pick in the third round the Seahawks draft tiny Wisconsin QB Russel Wilson. Pete Carrol is pumped. I don’t like the pick.

6:59 The Texans draft OG Brandon Brooks. I predict the Niners will draft another Brandon with their pick – OG Brandon Washington from the University of Miami.

7:18 Jarius Wright and Marvin Jones are both on the board still – two steals waiting to be drafted by smart teams.

7:21 With the 83rd pick in the draft, the Bengals take WR Mohamed Sanu. Good pick. I like these mid-round wide receivers better than the first round ones.

7:42 The Niners have traded back! The Colts will draft at pick No. 92 instead. In return, the Niners get pick No. 97 and a fifth rounder in 2013.
