Niners fire embattled Raye

San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary indicated changes would be coming after Sunday’s embarrassing 31-10 loss in Kansas City.

Just not this one.

Less than 24 hours after Singletary said embattled offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye would retain his job duties this season, the 49ers, off to an 0-3 start, have fired Raye three games into his second season. Quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson will become the offensive coordinator and offensive assistant Jason Michael will assume Johnson’s former role starting with Sunday’s game at Atlanta.

The news was first reported by the NFL Network this morning and the team later issued a press release.

After problems getting the play calls delivered to Alex Smith helped
doom the Niners in a 31-6 season-opening loss to Seattle, the offensive
woes have continued. The 49ers have scored 38 points, their lowest total
after three games since 1977 and the second-fewest in the NFL this
season behind Carolina.

In his postgame meeting with the media Sunday, Singletary was asked if
Raye would “definitely” remain his offensive coordinator for the rest of
the season and the Niners coach didn’t hesitate, “Yes,” he said flatly.
“Yes.” He also defended Raye’s decision to continue running the ball
while trailing 24-3 with 16 minutes left.

But Singletary also said he would have to “look at the film” on six
occasions. Evidently that film study led him to let go of Raye, 64, in
his 34th NFL season and his 14th season as an offensive coordinator with
seven different teams. Raye has never lasted more than three seasons in
his eight stints as an offensive coordinator.

Singletary will meet with the media at 11:45 a.m. at the team headquarters in Santa Clara.
