Practice report: 49ers preparing for Packers, Akers v. Cundiff part II, and Justin Smith’s arm brace

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers appear to be preparing to play the Green Bay Packers next Saturday. At practice this afternoon, the 49ers’ offensive practice squad players were all wearing the numbers of the Packers’ stars:

Ricardo Lockette was wearing No.87 for Jordy Nelson, Chad Hall was wearing No. 18 for Randall Cobb, and Garrett Celek was wearning No.88 for Jermichael Finley.

These players were warming up on the far side of the field field. On the near side of the field, in front of Jim Harbaugh and Brad Seely and the reporters, David Akers and Billy Cundiff competed in Day 2 of the kicker competition. Both guys made most of their field goals, but Cundiff kicked the ball harder and farther. I saw him drill a 54-yarder. I did not see Akers attempt anything longer than 51 yards.

Justin Smith practiced for the second day in a row. To protect his torn triceps tendon, he wraps a brace around his left arm from shoulder to wrist. The brace keeps his arm slightly bent so he cannot fully extend it, although he can bend it.

The 49ers will open their locker room for player interviews at 3:15.
