Quarterback rotation

On Monday Coach Harbaugh alluded to a “pitch count” for Alex Smith in the first preseason game against the New Orleans Saints on Friday, and Matt Maiocco reports he should play most of the 1st quarter, with Colin Kaepernick playing the second and third quarters.

That means you’ll get to watch the rookie take around 40 snaps. Whatever pitch count Smith is on doesn’t factor for Kaepernick, who has a “baseball arm,” which he says rarely gets sore.

You’ll be able to see how much Kaepernick’s been improving on a daily-basis in practice, and how confident the coaches are already becoming with him.

This is his opportunity to show he’s the clear No. 2 quarterback. If he plays well, any veteran quarterback they end up signing will only compete with Jeremiah Masoli and McLeod Bethel-Thompson for the third quarterback job.
