Reid: “I feel like a professional football player now.”

SANTA CLARA – Eric Reid spoke at his locker Tuesday afternoon. Here’s what he said.

Q: When were you told you’re the starting free safety?

REID: Just now. It’s obviously good news for me. I’m just going to keep working hard and try to keep the spot.

Q: What did you say when he told you?

REID: He didn’t, you just told me.

Q: Did you have an inkling?

REID: I’ve been running with the Ones the past couple days. I guess that’s always been the goal, but I just try to get better every day at practice.

Q: Did you feel comfortable with the starters against the Vikings?

REID: I did feel comfortable, but I think that’s a credit to training camp. I spent some time with those guys in camp the past couple of days. It’s just like practice, just different uniforms.

Q: They went after you on the first play. How did that play go?

REID: It’s something that we always go over in game plans, especially against that formation with one receiver on the field. It’s a max protect scheme. Some teams like to take a chance on it. I was responsible for the post, so that’s what I did. I stayed in the post and he threw a long foul ball.

Q: If that throw had been on target, were you ready to make a play on it?

REID: Oh yeah. I’d like to say I would have gotten a pick, but I don’t know. I think I was in good position.

Q: How do you feel now compared to your first day of camp.

REID: I feel like a professional football player now. The first day I got here, it was a lot faster than college, the defense was a little bit tougher but it just takes practice and repetition.

Q: Have you started looking at the Packers yet?

REID: No, we just finished working on the Vikings. I imagine we’ll be starting shortly. I guess on Friday we’ll start.

Q: Have you taken any peaks ahead to them or anything?

REID: No. Like I said, one day at a time.

Q: How much has Donte Whitner helped you get to this point?

REID: Oh, a ton. When I’m on the field with him it’s very easy because he knows what he’s doing. Sometime he tells me, “You make all of the calls in this period,” just to see where I’m at with it. If he sees that I’m confused, he’ll help me out. We just communicate.

Q: Do you feel like you’re where you need to be as far as the communication?

REID: Yeah. I’m so much farther than I was Day 1 of OTAs.
