Report: Colin Kaepernick to attend 49ers offseason workout program

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick will attend the San Francisco 49ers offseason workout program, according to Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Merrcury News.

The Niners offseason workout program starts Monday morning at 8:30, and Kaepernick was spotted flying from Denver to San Francisco Sunday night. He will earn a $400,000 bonus by attending the Niners workouts.

Do you still think the 49ers will trade Kaepernick? Does this news change anything?

  1. I really hope something gets worked out and he gets to stay….I want to see if Chip can do something with him and turn this mess around….solid play by CK will take some years off the rebuild…and with a good draft….it may turn out to be a reload….or last nights Beach Blues All You can Drink Tequila Concert is still working its magic !

  2. Smart move by Kap. No one’s said he lacks business savvy. This move alone just swung contract leverage back to Kap and his agents. This has to make Denver believe the 49ers and Kap are willing to work with one another, thus preventing the Broncs from lowballing the Niners. Media has done a decent job of presenting Kap as a QB fitting Kelly option offense.

  3. Tim Kawakami Retweeted D

Yep, as I mentioned last night, it’s the bad-executive trap. Any good coach will eventually want out.

@timkawakami only way to keep all the control is a parade of unsuccessful coaches. Good luck 9ers.

  4. Of course he is, he gets the bonus and he gets to make the first organized gathering of the team into his own personal side show. Ship his ass off already.

    1. Kap’s gone. Baalke’s ship is sinking so he has no time to play wait and see with a 28 year old trying to learn fundamentals still.
Mel Kiper has the Browns selecting Jared Goff and the 49ers Carson Wentz. However, Baalke has no time to take a chance on a lower division QB to see if he has it at the pro level.
Baalke goes into the season with Gabbert as the starter, or gives up a kings ransom in draft picks to Tennesssee to move in front of Cleveland, or as I believe, trades down from # 7 acquiring another 2nd rounder, drafts a top O-lineman with his second rounder, and moves up in the late second or early 3rd round to acquire a defensive player.
The North Carolina QB, Jacoby Brissett, Ohio State’s, Cardale Jones, Oregon’s QB, Vernon Adams II, and Dustin Vaughan are available in later rounds. In this way Baalke keeps his job longer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sBXKL9VFHU

      1. I absolutely believe your right. Except one thing…Baalke’s not their because hes productive. He’s there because he shields Jed from making the hard, tough decisions a CEO is expected to make. If he was judged on his production, he would have been gone after 2012.

    2. I agree James…… ship his ass already he doesn’t want to be playing for the niners….so he is just saving his ass and collecting the money hoe sad is this?

  5. I really hope Kaep can overlook the slights and insults, and come back to an organization he liked since he was a kid. Maybe if Jed bends over and lets him give a swift kick to the behind in front of the team, he may be mollified.

    1. I’d say it might take more than ” A ” kick….besides Kap needs his feet to run and seeing the size of the A:;hole….I do not want him slipping!!
I am with you Seb….I would like to keep CK but …so much damage :(

      1. Yup, It will take a miracle for him to stay, but if Jed truly parts ways with the leaker and eats some humble pie……

  6. On Rotoworld:

    49ers re-signed DL Tony Jerod-Eddie to a one-year, $1.3 million contract.

The two sides were reportedly working on a long-term deal after San Francisco failed to extend a qualifying offer, but Jerod-Eddie will settle for a one-year deal worth less than the lowest restricted free agent tender. It is a good bit of business by the 49ers, who are desperate for depth along the defensive line. Jerod-Eddie played 290 snaps on defense last year and was a contributor on special teams.

    1. Bats are not just for baseball and vampire movies

Buckner, Dial, TJE and Armstead would be “The Four Bats Men of the Apocalypse” or “The Bat Down Club” or “the Battles.”

      1. I’d burn those big boys with mis-direction plays. Bulky likes size, not speed.

  7. I have decided to take a break from the Kap drama for today. It is opening day for the Giants. Let see if the Giants have another bit of even year magic in them. 2010, 2012, 2014, ….2016???

    Go Madbum…Go Posey…Go Pence….Go Giants..

    1. Agreed Rick. Seems like Shefter, Rapaport and Florio are great and keeping this thing stoked. The parties involved are so quiet about we are slaves to rumor, leaks and hearsay. Something to fill the headlines till the draft. I am checking out for a bit too.

    2. I was surprised. I thought Hunter Pence would hit a HR before Duffy. Nice to see the bats come alive.

  8. I hope the 49ers either let him sign with Denver for whatever they are offering or the keep him on the roster. So things got a bit frosty between him and management. So what. They went out and signed probably the best coach around for him, one who runs an offense that should be suitable to Kaepernick’s style, one who emphasizes offense at the expense of defense, which is the opposite of Harbaugh. Denver can stick it. If they want Kap, then pay him. They are trying to get him on the cheap. Ok, well you might not get him now and your starting QB for a Superbowl winning team is Mark Sanchez and you have a rookie for a backup. Good luck with that.

  9. Ah, you’re right Rick…It’s too much water, I mean drama under the bridge. The one thing Sebster has never acknowledged…Too much drama can get you fired from a job as much as incompetence.

  10. How happy is Jed that Colin is showing up for voluntary camp? Pick a number 1 to 10. ;-}

    1. Some say he wants Kap…Others say he doesn’t…whoever is in charge 9ers public affairs had a job on their hands….whatever happens…Jed and company have the opportunity to become the most vilified people on the West coast….everytime I walk through an airport….I look forward to an opportunity to let him know!

    2. I’d rank it at about an 8 or 9. And I would rank John Elway at the other end of the spectrum. Colin showing up for voluntary camp strengthens the 49ers hand in terms of leverage with Denver.

As for Colin’s workout bonus? Colin’s workout bonus doesn’t become due until Colin attends 90% of the offseason program. If Colin is in fact traded at some point between now and, say, the draft, Colin would likely not see any of the workout bonus, unless it is part of a newly structured contract, and if he does see some, it would be a pro-rated amount. Also, although the “owners” sign the checks, Jed doesn’t get to deposit any savings into his personal bank account, nor does Colin’s bonus money come out of Jed’s personal account.

      1. Are you an accountant in your real life? You seem to be counting grains of sand. Jed’s happiness or anger with Colin probably has nothing to do with his workout bonus – paid or not paid.

  11. http://www.ninersnation.com/2016/4/4/11362442/49ers-titans-discussed-trade-for-no-1-pick

The only way I see the 9ers moving up to the #1 spot is if they absolutely want either Wentz or Goff. Since Cleveland is projected to go with Wentz, then I would guess it would have to be Wentz the 9ers really want if they trade up to the #1 spot. But a move from seven to one requires giving up as much draft capital as the #7 pick (3000 points for #1 and 1500 points for #7). Neither of these candidates is Andrew Luck and with the way Baalke values draft picks, I just can’t see it happening. But the source, Jason Cole, claims to have two sources that told him this. Of course an inquiry is just that.

    1. I can’t predict exactly what trades will go down, but I think it will very be different that last year when the first trade was the 49ers moving down from 15. At least one trade in the top 7.

    2. The very top of the draft seems to have the most departures from the trade charts. It often depends on whether there’s an Andrew Luck type prospect and other market variables.

It was rumored the 49ers tried to trade out of the 1 spot in 2005. They valued Smith and Rogers fairly evenly, and knew one would be there later in the first. They didn’t get any decent offers.

      Then there’s 2013. The Raiders traded pick 3 (2200 points) for Miami’s 12+42 (1680 points).

  12. I almost didn’t recognize Colin without his Beats by Dre. Is the lad finally growing up?

    1. I have to give Colin credit. He seems to be doing the mature thing by showing up today. It must be a bit uncomfortable for him. After everything that happened last season, and requesting permission to seek a trade last month. First he was benched. Then all of the the reports about how little studying Kap was doing last season, came to light. And of course, I know a lot of players felt like Colin abandoned the team when he elected to have season ending surgery, leaving the team with an undrafted FA as their backup. I’m not saying what Colin did was right or wrong, I’m just saying that there were a lot of players (and ex-players) who weren’t real happy about Colin’s decision. So it certainly cannot be easy to walk into the facility and look his teammates in the eye after everything that has transpired. It takes a lot of guts and even humility, and I applaud Colin for this decision.

I have been hard on Colin from time to time, but I was also one of his strongest supporters for the longest time. I do think Colin is a good guy, and, though I think he does some immature things, in the end, I think he does mean well. I hope he get’s his priorities in order. This is certainly a good sign. Colin did himself and the 49ers a favor by showing up today, and creating a little more leverage for him, and the 49ers FO.

I do hope the best for him no matter where he plays this season and beyond. That is, as long as he isn’t a division opponent.

      1. Are you a psychologist in real life? Now you seem to be counting psychological rumors. ;-}

  13. He’s got ‘random screening’ written all over him. Definitely doesn’t look like a member of ISIS.

  14. Rotoword blurb from a Maiocco tweet:

“Retired” 49ers RT Anthony Davis did not report for the beginning of the offseason program on Monday.

Davis, who sat out 2015, has said he’ll be filing for reinstatement “later this year.” The 26-year-old tackle appears content to sit out the more tedious parts of the offseason before resuming his NFL career. We’ll see how that sits with taskmaster coach Chip Kelly.

  15. Just a confirmation:

    Matt Maiocco
✔ ‎‎@MaioccoCSN #49ers offseason program began at 8:30AM with Chip Kelly’s first team meeting. Colin Kaepernick was there. Trade to Broncos remains option.

  16. The way I see it, if I were Colin, I would feel insulted by the way Elway is clearly trying to lowball him. $7 million dollars for a starting NFL QB with a winning postseason record, is insulting if you ask me. I am kind of surprised more people aren’t talking about this. I know the Broncos are up tight against the salary cap, but NFL football is a rough sport. Guy’s get hurt, and they get hurt often. I can understand why Colin is hesitant to take such a drastic cut in his salary. The 49ers are never going to agree to pay a large portion of Colin’s salary this season in order for Colin to play for another team, unless that team is willing to give up a very high draft pick in return. We’re talking a high 2nd round pick, minimum! And I am sure Colin understands this.

Like I said, Colin is showing some maturity and humility by showing up for the offseason program today. If the 49ers are genuine about giving Colin an opportunity for a fresh start, and an opportunity for Colin to win his starting job back. And they are willing to pay Colin $16 million to do it. Well, I think John Elway has his work cut out for him.

Like I said, I have been hard on Colin. But I feel like I should have been. I also believe in redemption. And I do believe there is a possibility that Chip can connect with Colin, and something could “click” for Colin in terms of this, up-tempo, spread, zone-read system. And who knows, maybe Colin can regain that spark, regain his confidence, and prove to his teammates that he in fact can be a leader of men, and get his career back on track.

I know it’s a tough road to hoe. And I know Kap’s got his work cut out for him if he’s going to turn things around. It’ll take a big time commitment from Colin. He’s going to need to continue to show humility and reach out to his teammates and mend some relationships.

Like Steve Young and others have said since the day Chip Kelly was hired. This isn’t about Chip Kelly, Trent Baalke or Jed York having to convince Colin that they want him around. The 49ers have made it clear that they are willing to wipe the slate clean, and they let their money do the talking. No, this is about Colin convincing Chip, and the 49ers FO that he’s has some humility, that he is ready to put the past behind him, and that he wants to be the 49ers starting QB in 2016.

And if Colin is ready to make that commitment, then I say, let the games begin!

    1. 49 …

      Ab-so-frikkin-lootly !!

      C’mon, Colin …

      Make me proud ..
      to wear my #7 … again !

      1. “make me proud to wear No. 7 again.”

        Better get your Niner’s gear featuring retired players;
or use Velcro for names, numbers and city.

      1. yeah.. HT ..

any bets on who has the straight-flush..
        and who’s holdin’ .. the pair ?

    1. Nothing really new here. It should be no surprise to anyone that a player is not willing to give up 5 million dollars. It’s fine to want out and all, but giving up that much in guaranteed money is a non starter. The longer it goes the more likely he is to stick around one more year at least.

      1. I keep thinking of what happened to Crabtree in the 2014 off season camp. He was doing nothing at all and missed most of the season. That kind of thing can happen any time during any team activities or independent workouts.

  17. Is 4.9 million the cost of a second round pick? In my inexperience, that seems like a great deal. If in fact Denver is willing to trade the second round pick for the 4.9 million from the 49ers and pay Kaepernick 7 million.

This would set a precedent in the NFL in which teams can buy draft picks (trade players for cash like in the NBA).

Denver just is not in a salary cap position to buy Kaepernick and SF is happy to eat 11 million to prove a point. I mean aren’t they eating 20 million on Tomsula and 5 million on Harbaugh?

Kaepernick will be day 1 starter and by week 6, he will be benched.

    1. They eat nothing with Harbaugh. He made more money in his College job and his contract included an off set. Then there is the mutual part.

Tomsula worked for one of his contract years, what ever that means.

      1. And I don’t think the Niners are technically paying Kelly this year based on Philly firing him.

        1. I stand corrected on Harbaugh and Tomsula. Thank you. The depth and wealth of information in this blog contributed by the posters is certainly where the value lies.

  18. No on Harbaugh. Last year would’ve been the final year of his contract, but I believe that was wiped out.

Also, you’re way high on your Tomsula number (I think it’s $10.5M total for three more years – $3.5M per year)
