Report: Colin Kaepernick to restructure contract with 49ers

SANTA CLARA

Colin Kaepernick is on the verge of restructuring his contract with the 49ers, according to Ian Rapoport.

If both sides restructure the deal in the next few days, do you expect Kaepernick will start next Sunday against the Bills? Why or why not?

  1. Yep because this is the thing that has kept the front office from wanting him to play. If they can get off the hook for the injury guarantee it likely means it’s a precursor to Kap taking over at QB. I doubt it changes much but it’s interesting that Kap would do this. Many have surmised his heart isn’t in it but I doubt he would do this if he wasn’t interested in playing.

    1. You are right Rocket. I think Kap will start next week.

Let’s hold Kap to the same standard as Gabbert. If and when Kap gets sacked we can’t just say the line sucks. It was the same line for Gabbert. Blaine just gets the ball out quicker.

From bad arm slot to old wind up. We will finally know that Kap isn’t the QB of the future.

      1. Or, maybe Kaep will show why he was a Super Bowl QB, and continue to make those jaw dropping throws. Gabbert made some good runs, but Kaep has the potential to go all the way.

With a decent O line, Kaep may shine, and I will be the happiest fan in the world.

        1. Seb, let me remind you that —

          1. One of the reasons Kaepernick was demoted last year was because the only thing jaw dropping about his throws was that they often sailed high over his targets’ heads or hit the ground in front of them.
          2. Gabbert is plenty fast himself.
          3. Gabbert is more elusive in the pocket.
          4. And Kaepernick isn’t any better in seeing wide open receivers, like in this play —

          http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap3000000570028/49ers-Colin-Kaepernick-doesn-t-see-open-receiver

While he would get better protection this year and maybe revert to the “old” Kaepernick, my choice would be Ponder, though.

          Keep the faith, buddie.

          1. George, with a decent O line, Kaep will have more than a a nanosecond of protection.

Kaep did not shine last year, I admit that. However, I will temper his play with the fact that he was injured.

Gabbert is fully healthy, and was wildly inaccurate and threw 2 picks.

I also wish to strongly disagree that Kaep is not as elusive as Gabbert. Keap has shrugged off arm tackles, and in one game, he completed a pass while getting drilled.

Now that Kaep will play, we will see if the 2012 Kaep will emerge, or the 2015 Kaep will show up.

            Cant wait.

            1. Agreed, Kaep is a more talented athlete. The BS is the story that he wasn’t physically ready, when in reality it was all about the money and injury clause. Kaep can’t win with this terrible team. I know he wants to play but it is a high price to pay for free agency in 2017. That said, I love Kaep and hope he at least gives fans a few good moments this season.

            2. Keep in mind that according to PFF the Oline ranks almost identically to where it did last year at this point. :/

          2. This is old news, and frankly tired. Gabbert has made so many poor throws, to even bring this up suggests you have an agenda. The last two weeks Gabbert has made two terrible throws to wide open recievers that are equally as bad. Granted, hitting on those doesn’t guarantee winning but it does serve as a momentum changer and a positive that this offense needs.

        2. Seb,

I was with you until I saw Kap play. He was no better than last year. I hope you are right.

This team still has an outside chance of making the playoffs. Gabbert missing wide open WRs means that the WRs are getting open at times. I like the idea of Kap keeping it on a zone read to the side of Staley and Patton. Patton could enable Kap to get some long outside runs.

What will Chip do? He said he would have to change his offense if Kap was playing. Does Kap not understand the playbook last year? We have already seen confusion from the offense, even on the first play of a game. Add that to the fact that Kap likes to audible and you should expect some delay of game penalties.

No storm, just a dense fog.

          1. 80, maybe Chip should become more innovative, and let Kaep run the pistol. He never had DOG penalties while at Nevada.

Playoffs? I just hope they win another game!

            1. Seb,

We both know Chip won’t be innovative. He won’t sign and use a FB. Chip will never use the Pistol offense because it might work and make his system look bad

          2. Yeah, this team has an outside chance of making the playoffs … outside of REALITY! (to quote Mora the elder … Playoffs?)

        3. Kaep has no touch. Every pass is a fastball.

QBs like Brady, Brees, etc make it easy for their receivers because they have touch… they make average WRs look like stars.

Kaep makes great receivers look like slackers… He even broke Boldins finger.

Balls bouncing off receivers hands also get intercepted. You cant win in the NFL if you turn the ball over often.

          1. Once went completely Vegan for a year and a half. Lost weigh, some muscle mass but gained flexibility. Lap has been recovering from injuries not been able to work out as much and has lost muscle mass from what we understand. Might not be to big a reach to see him come back with more touch on many of his throws. It might not be a bad thing if you lost a mph or two either

        4. Tunnel vision is an amazing thing. If all you knew about Colin Kaepernick was the Superbowl season, you’d believe he was the real thing and could suddenly light up this offense. The truth is, as the excellent offensive line that protected him that year diminished, so did his performance. Great quarterbacks cannot overcome bad offensive lines but they can make a reasonable number of adjustments all on their own to keep the chains moving, at least some of the time . No such luck with Kaepernick. Kaepernick and Gabbert produce the same bad results with slightly different causes. And some of the failures are identical namely overthrowing, underthrowing and missing the open receiver down field.

Yeah, it’s a temptation to look back at yesteryear when Kaepernick was surrounded by enough really good players to mask his deficiencies. But we should not forget the many times in more recent years where Kaepernick has clearly showed us he is not NFL capable anymore.

But go ahead and play him. And watch the crowds howl and for good reason.

          1. No. Kaep was so injured last year, he needed 3 surgeries to repair all the damage. Some posters do have a myopic view about the situation. They think that an injury to the thumb of his throwing hand would not affect him at all.

Gabbert, on the other hand, is fully healthy, but missed 2 passes that could have resulted in TDs, then threw 2 picks. He did not shine.

The fact that the Cowboys and Philly have started rookies, and they have done well, just proves how important a stout O line is to their success.

Go ahead, diss Kaep all you want. I will continue to defend him against the screeds, because no one else will.

I hope they do howl. With Kaep leading the team again, I hope they howl with delight to see the Niners winning games again, and howl with derision at all the Negative Nancys, and how wrong they were.

    2. His heart may not be in Sanfranciscio (shout out to Tony Bennett) but if he wants any sort of football future it would behoove him to play this year and show some remind ace of talent so he looks valuable to another team. He tested the market and it showed what the league thinks of him now. He has to re-prove himself. Time to get off your knee Kaep!

    3. Has anyone seen the info on Reuben Foster? It is said that he’s the best linebacker prospect since Patrick Willis.

    1. +1000 Prime.

What was Trent been doing before the season? Oh I remember, He was telling Kap to basically keep his mouth shut, and giving talking points to Dilfer.

  2. I don’t like the way this front office does business. I think Kaepernick is falling into the same trap that got him to take the team friendly deal in the first place….

    1. They are in desperation mode right now. Baalke is trying to save his job while also trying to save a boo boo of $15 million if Kap gets hurt. Its a hot mess right now.
Thank God for the NHL right now and the Blue Jays!

    2. Seems to be a real lack of honesty and integrity in the 49er front office. If the cancer is Baalke then it can be fixed. If the cancer is the Yorks and it just spread to Baalke then this franchise will never be healed until the Yorks sell the team. All I know is it’s getting much more difficult to support a team with which I am disgusted by on a regular basis. This must be exactly how Republicans feel about Donald Trump.

      Jed York = Donald Trump?

      1. “….,,,,more difficult to support a team with which I am disgusted by on a regular basis.”
        Frankly, the problem is yuge.

  3. It is pretty much a given after the play by Gabbert last night that Kaepernick would most likely be starting against Buffalo. However, I think the restructuring of his contract is more of an attempt to drive his trade value up before the end of the season.

  4. Looks like Kap gets to become a FA in return for giving up the injury clause. Big time gamble but he’ll be motivated to play well anyway.

    1. Does part of the deal really make him FA in 2017?

Interesting. If they restructure the compensation amount, I would guess its in part to make his trade value increase. But if he’s FA at seasons end it looks more like a desperation move to rescue a drowning season… or a delayed release.

      1. Kap has no reason to restructure unless he gets something out of it. Giving him the ability to void the deal at the end of the season gives him control of his situation. I doubt anybody is going to trade anything for the guy this far into the season and knowing he’s a FA when the season is over.

      2. Also, the only thing that will change according to what I’ve read is he will waive the guaranteed injury clause. His compensation doesn’t change. That’s why I think this is an indication that Kelly plans to start him. He wants to play Kap, management says no unless Kap gives up injury guarantee, Kap agrees provided they allow him to become a FA after the season. Everybody gives and everybody potentially gets.

      3. Yes,

Kap would be able to void the new contract after 2016. If he does that we will get nothing for him.

I think he will start at least two games and gets traded if he plays well or cut if he plays bad. He won’t be here next year under any circumstances.

        1. Rocket-#80, thanks for the info. I understood there was “void” language, but I thought that gave Kap the option to revert to his existing contract if he wanted.

Rapoport tweets (my probably incorrect guess as to what they mean)

“…49ers and Kaepernick are closing in on a restructured contract to alleviate concerns regarding injury guarantees.”
          (CK will play this season)

“…giving him an opportunity to void after this season.”
(Does “void” mean quite the 49ers to become FA, or revert to his existing contract?)

“Eliminates guarantees in 2017 & cuts off the final 3 years. A shorter deal.” (Eliminates injury guarantees, CK stays a 49ers through the 2017 season.)

          1. I haven’t heard the final details but it wouldn’t make much sense for Kap to restructure if he wasn’t given the option to become a FA after the season. By doing nothing he could insure his release before the next year or at worst collect the next year of his contract if they decided to keep him. The only reason to do this is to guarantee FA after the season.

            1. Pretty damn risky on Kaepernick’s part. Does this mean he wants to play football, because I don’t care how well he plays, it has been reported that he’s the most hated player in the NFL since Carruth. He might get the Alex Smith treatment….

              1. It is risky, but in reality the Niners weren’t likely to keep him beyond this year at the current terms anyway, so might as well see if you can get on the field and rebuild your value on the open market.

              2. He must want to play pretty bad but he has to know his options with his political stance will be extremely limited even if he plays well. He won’t have much to work with either and he’s not all the way back, according to Kelly….

              1. They weren’t chanting for Ponder, they were chanting for Kap! The 49ers are doing this because they don’t have a choice. You either play him, or cut him. You can’t keep saying he’s not ready and be the back up. So they let him play and that’s their out with the fans and media. They can’t say, ‘the 49ers cut him for political reasons’….

              2. They are off the hook for the injury guarantee, meaning they can play him knowing they owe him nothing next season regardless of what happens.

              3. Well if that’s the case he should start against Buffalo. The only problem is if it doesn’t make a difference, you are left with Ponder as the last option.
As much as I hate losing, this might be the blessing in disguise for that 1st overall pick

              4. Wether Gamble takes over or not, the allure of a top 3 draft pick is probably the only incentive to come to SF and rebuild the roster. Also, will the new guy want Kelly and his staff? Gamble and Kelly seem to have ties, but is this what little Jed wants? I mean now the pressure gets turned up and its only week 6!

              5. I would imagine the insurance policy Kap took out as part of the deal is a big piece of this. I imagine he will become the beneficiary as part of the restructure.

              6. Prime:

The allure of a top 3 pick and around $50 million in cap space. I would think that this would be tantalizing particularly to those who consider themselves “turnaround” artists.

              7. So why would the Niners do this? Whats in it for them?

The front office gets rid of a disgruntled player and opens the door to try drafting a franchise QB.

  5. I don’t think he will start. It’s being reported today that the locker room much prefers Ponder to either Gabbert or Kaepernick. My guess is the restructuring of Kaepernick’s contract will make it easier to trade him. Most likely a team with injured quarterbacks.

    1. Preseason .. ?

      you’re kidding… right ?

      Pretty sure even .. Cassie
would look good against 3rd stringers who are either not on those
rosters nor in the NFL …

The Niners would probably be better off with
      Blake Bell under center …
(at least he’s been on the roster longer than Ponder)

  6. I knew it. They were afraid of Kaep getting injured, but he is the one putting his body on the line. What a bunch of gutless cowards.

Niners should just take out an insurance policy for Kaep in case he becomes injured. Better yet, they should fire the guy who wrote that contract in the first place.

  7. Can you imagine how Kaep would of played last night. He sucks under pressure.

It appears its a win, win situation for both sides. As a fan it doesn’t change a thing for the present, we still do not have a starting QB on the team.

    1. I believe that this order was meant for Mr. Bizarre Foods himself, Andrew Zimmern. AZ will eat anything – except Walnuts.

  8. Just another reminder to never believe anything a NFL coach or FO says. Especially the 49ers.

  9. “It still might happen, of course, but hearing a re-worked contract agreement between 49ers and Colin Kaepernick is far from a done deal.” – Maiocco

    1. If the renegotiation doesn’t pan out and Kap doesn’t play…That’ll be interesting.

  10. The reason for the renegotiation is interesting. Could it be to trade? Baalke’s seat is supposedly hot, so can he afford to trade for draft picks? If not, it seems like the position he needs to trade for is qb, so what’s the point?

    1. I doubt it has anything to do with a trade. They don’t want to have to pay him if he gets injured, so if he agrees to waive that in a restructure, they will likely play him.

      1. Or a team will not accept a trade unless he renegotiates that part of his contract. It seems odd that they would do this now only if it was because of playing him. A trade would be the best thing ever for this team, even if its for a late 5 or 6th round pick.

        1. What does Kap get out of giving up his injury protections in order to allow the Niners to trade him? That makes no sense for him. He wouldn’t accept changes to be traded to Denver in the offseason so why would he change his stance now? The only way this benefits Kap in any way is if he gets to FA after the season.

          1. Possibly a team wants him to see what he can do, can he resurrect his career. If not, and he gets wall papered, they are the hook for 15 million after maybe only 5-9 games. It makes perfect sense. Might have been the reason why Denver did not pull the trigger on the deal.

            1. Why would Kap agree to that though? What benefit is there in agreeing to waive his injury clause in order to be traded to another team in midseason? He would have to learn a new system with no injury protection and no guarantee of anything beyond this season.

          2. He may be thinking more clearly now, Rocket. His options are limited. If he really thinks he can and/or wants to be an NFL QB, he has to prove himself, and the only way for him to do that, is to play. The team may have convinced him, finally, the only way for him to play is to redo his deal.

I’ll bet if he had it to do over, he would’ve taken less money to go to Denver.

            1. I don’t think it’s thinking more clearly ex. I think it’s the Niners agreeing to let him become a FA. If they or Denver had agreed to that in the offseason, he would have agreed to a revised one year deal in a second to facilitate a trade.

I think this is a case of Chip wanting to play him and the FO not allowing it without the injury clause being waived. Kap is not going to restructure anything without the chance to become a FA after the season or some financial guarantee, so that is likely the main point of negotiation.

              1. Well, I don’t think the FO not allowing it is absolute. What if Gabbert had been hurt in one of these last five games. As far as I know Kap was the only QB backup (except for Bell, but having him play would have been a mess in more ways than one).

              2. Which means, Rocket, Kelly does not have control of who plays QB and never has had such control with the 49ers. What kind of coach would except that condition of employment? Tomsula?

              3. What kind of coach would except that condition of employment?

One that had no other suitors….

              4. I’m referring to CK’s new found flexibility in accepting the elimination of the injury guarantee. If I remember correctly, CK wouldn’t agree to reducing his salary or giving up his injury guarantee when a trade to Denver was being negotiated.

I still think he overplayed his hand, if he had any confidence in his ability to play QB in the NFL, anyway.

        2. I hope you’re right Prime, The worst case scenario is that Kap plays slightly better than last year, keeps his job, and we don’t address the QB position again.

          1. Anyone coming into the GM position next year will surely to God want to address the QB position with that first or second round pick. Maybe both! Maybe use the entire 60 million in cap space its that bad in SF!

            1. Anyone but Baalke. Jed needed a fall guy for this year when he should have been fired with Tomsula.

I know I say this a lot but Shanahan wanted to get rid of Kap. No way Mike would looked at Kap and Gabbert and not spent a high pick on a QB. If I remember correctly it was Shanahan that insisted on drafting Cousins after RG3. He knew that RG3 was inaccurate and brittle just like Kap.

      2. In that scenario, the worse case is kap starts and actually plays well because he can then opt out for next year and we have nobody at that point?

        1. If Kap plays well they still have a chance to resign him. For Kap it just gives assurances he will not have to wait to see what his future holds after the season and can enter FA early on if that is what he decides to do.

Realistically, he probably won’t be much better than he has been the past couple of years and they move on after the season. This is the last opportunity he will have here if he gets it.

  11. So much for the reason Kaep wasn’t starting being a football decision. I hate this deal. It just shows the FO are chicken s@#%s and have kept a guy on the books they had no intention of playing on his current deal. Pathetic.

Good move by Kaep if it does indeed mean he can void his deal to become a FA next season. It is a risk, but his contract was what prevented him from getting out this year.

    1. Yeah, but as I said above if Gabbert had gotten hurt in those first five games, Kap would have come off the bench as the backup QB. Ponder wasn’t dressed and putting Bell in would have really upset the apple cart. So if the FO really was so concerned about Kap getting hurt, wouldn’t they have dressed Ponder as the backup. Countering this idea, however, is that Kap would have proclaimed that he was ready to play which would have confirmed the idea that the FO was concerned about him getting hurt. Still, it’s weighing risks and rewards.

      1. Cubus,
It’s a really mixed up situation. I think the most likely explanation is that the 49ers are incompetent.

      2. I don’t know cubus. But if they were always fine with the idea of Kaep playing, why is it now that they are looking at ways to reduce their risk exposure if he gets injured again?

I think so long as they believed Gabbert was going to be the starting QB they were willing to accept the risk of Kaep being the backup. Results and sub-standard QB play are going to force a change at QB, so the FO is now looking at how they can reduce their financial risk. It’s just another in a long line of examples of the penny pinching approach to football operations they have, that won’t get missed by players. They’ll have around $80M in cap space next offseason at this rate and nobody willing to come here for them to spend that money on.

        1. Good point regarding the timing, Scooter. So you don’t think there would be any “turnaround” artists willing to come with $80M in cap space and a probable top 5 draft pick?

          1. They’ll only get a HC with a decent and recent track record if they are given full control, in my opinion. Baalke has to be gone, and whoever replaces him has to be GM in name only. And Jed has to step entirely out of the way.

Most likely scenario is Kelly is retained and Gamble promoted, I’m afraid. And I don’t see that cutting it in terms of perception of this team around the league. I am not expecting a quick turnaround.

            1. By turnaround artist I wasn’t thinking of HC. Rocket has a point when he keeps saying that if Kelly is let go, they’ll be paying three HCs. I was actually thinking more of the GM, who presumably would still retain control over personnel.

              1. How many really good GMs would want to go somewhere they know they can’t bring in a new HC? How many would be happy having Kelly?

              2. Not sure. But perhaps that will limit potential candidates to rising stars seeking their first opportunity. Inherently riskier.

    2. Either way we are left with a coach that appears now to have accepted that restriction when he took the job.

  12. With Kap off the books next year we will be 60 million dollars under the cap. That is a lot of money for Jed not to spend. Sell the team Denise.

    1. There’s a floor they have to spend over three years. They’ll have to cough up some of that dough.

      1. Maybe they will pay Dockett to not play again. I think they will keep Ward or Reid, not both. They may extend Hyde if he stays healthy. Kerley will get a little more money. We might keep Brooks just to stay over the salary floor.

    2. Don’t forget the $20+ million they will carry over from this season. They’ll be about $80 million under the cap if Kaep becomes a FA at the end of the year.

  13. 1. This demonstrates clearly the FO concern is money not winning games. While I don’t believe Kap is the answer, if he is not starting because they don’t want to risk an injury which will cost them money as next years contract becomes guaranteed they are making it clear to the fans where the York’s stand: money is their sole motivation. They care about:
    1. Increasing the value of the franchise
    2. Increasing the cash flow.
    3. Decreasing expenses
    4. Maximizing profits
    5. Having a mangement team they are comfortable with (no difficult coaches)
    6. winning football games

Until #6 gets a lot higher on the list, not much will change.

  14. I could honestly care less if he starts now.
They will be worse or the same.
And the biggest part is they won’t owe him money when he gets another “late injury” like he did last season and have to keep or pay this bum.

Also I’d like to see him play so these Kaepers can finally shut up when he stinks the joint up and Ponder starts the last 6 games of the season. But I have a feeling it will be the defense, chip Kelly and no wr’s as the excuse.

  15. Anyone who thinks he is going to be traded is crazy. This is all so he will play. No team is going to give anything up for a damaged player who becomes a FA at the end of the year. This is simply to get him on the field without fear of owing him next year. I don’t think they will be greatly improved but would you rather have a qb with a 31-22 record or one that clearly shows he doesn’t belong in the nfl with a qb with a 9-31
Record??? Ponder has won 14 games. I don’t get why anyone would prefer gabbert in there over kap

  16. There are about a dozen full time posters on this site along, with another dozen or so casual posters. We have to be careful that we do not become our own echo chamber . As an example, calling for Kaepernick to right the ship. We know that he has not performed well the last two years and for some he was suspect the whole time that he has played here. So why parrot those who think he is the answer?
Just my way of saying that it is all starting to sound to much the same!

      1. Funny, this site has lambasted Kaep right and left, but the fans chanting that they want Kaep are the ones who really want change, and they are more indicative of the true sentiments of the faithful Niner fans.

        1. Fans chanting they want Kaep are really chanting they want a competent QB. Whoever the backup QB is will be the guy they chant for if the starter sucks.

          1. Agree Scoot. If they go away from Blaine, I have no problem, but going to Colin gives me neither confidence nor hope. I’d be happy if it works, but, uh, …..Colin ’15 won’t fix shishkabob.
Our boyz may be so bad that we have a shot at a good QB in ’17; fortunately / unfortunately.

            1. I almost feel sorry for whichever QB they draft. Atm going to the 49ers doesn’t seem any better than going to the Browns.

              1. No no no horse guy. The next QB the 49ers draft will be a franchise one. So says history and for all the anguish we have suffered since Steve Young! Its our time!

            1. Seb,

Scooter was saying that the real meaning of the fans chanting “We want Kaep”, is that they want a competent QB, that Gabbert has shown he’s not that, and there’s nothing to lose giving CK a chance, no matter how slim of a chance it might be.

              1. Well, what I am saying is that Kaep, now that he is healthy, will be competent.

I agree, Gabbert is hurting the team with his poor play.

  17. Out of the frying pan into the fire. I still like a 3 man QB rotation- Gabbert the starter, Kaep middle innings, Ponder the closer. Oh yeah toss in the wishbone with all three QB’s in the game at the same time…

  18. baalke should do something bold. He is done anyway…..trade for AJ Mccarron, make a splash. Need something to be excited about other than drafting top 5 next year

  19. I just don’t feel that Kap’s head is in the game. I don’t expect an overall improvement. Just a different set of successes and failures. Hope I’m wrong.

  20. Gr.

I thought I felt a small tremor. Does that count?

Of course, out here on the Big Island the ground moves all the time, it’s that pesky volcano.

    1. You’re on a geological hot spot. But I think this would be more of an electrical disturbance from an internet feedback loop.

  21. “After he inked the deal, Kaepernick was criticized for signing a team-friendly contract. But it’s been the 49ers who have been eager to restructure the deal since the offseason. A source said the team tried to get Kaepernick to sign the revised contract before Thursday’s game but he refused.” … Matt Barrows

Another source has reported that Kaepernick’s agents haven’t seen any new contract proposals from the 49ers.

          1. We already know cubis. Just like all the people who thought Gabbert would magically become a good QB when he’s never been one, the same applies to Ponder.

              1. Cubus, first sorry for misspelling your screen name. The first move is fire O’Neil. Get someone in there who can at least put up a decent run defense. Some of those other guys on the defensive coaching staff can do a better job. The secondary isn’t bad.

Next try the other 2 QB’s. We must improve on 3 downs and hit 1-2 of those deep passes every game. BG’s done everything he can. Let’s see how the other two guys do in the offense. What I am saying is let’s keep our expectations reasonable. Neither Ponder nor CK will show us something they’ve never done before. CK has a bigger upside but he may never return there. If Ponder gets to play it comes down to third downs and a few chunk plays.

Next the OL needs to run block better. I don’t know the fix for this. On paper these guys look like road graters but struggle on the field.

This is all fairly obvious stuff but seems impossible with this team.

          2. All I know is that Ponder was out of the league and was painting his house when the Niners called.

Then against scrubs, he threw a gift wrapped interception like the DB was the intended receiver.

    1. Good find HT,

It looks like Kap wants to play but not against the Cardinal D. Another leak from the FO. Kap will be gone soon enough.

      1. You’ve missed the point. If Kaepernick’s agents haven’t seen any new deal then the 49er FO went directly to Kaepernick. That approach probably was used to get him on board for his current contract. He’s not going to fall for that pitch again.

If he’s agents are smart, they won’t sign a new deal before the break, or at least until after the next game.

        1. ht,

You’re right I did miss your point.

My post was about another FO leak that demonizes a person that Jed and or Trent wants to get rid of.

          1. You are right, the 49er FO is addicted to leaking their message to the usual suspects. Now it’s “the locker room” wants Ponder in order to put pressure on Kaepernick and counter the growing appearance that Kelly isn’t allowed to play Kaepernick.

When Kelly pointed out that he was in charge because he played Kaepernick against the Rams (three hand offs) I stopped doubting that Baalke/York is controlling who plays QB.

      2. To be fair to him this would have been a horrible week to start him. Only a few days to prepare, running a new offense, against a tough defense that is in his head… that’s tough for anyone. He deserves to be put in with a chance to succeed. Even the bills could be a rough matchup for him but I’m not sure Chip can wait that long… he has to be seen to be trying to do something.

  22. I can’t think of any reason why Kap will sign a restructured contract unless it comes with a multi-million signing bonus on top of his current year salary.

If he doesn’t renegotiate, the Niners will cut him at the end of the year so he will become a free agent. Kap wins.

If the Niners don’t play him because he refuses to renegotiate, they will have a major PR problem. And a major locker room problem. Kap wins.

If Kap plays and is better than Gabbert, the Niners will have to keep him through 2017. Kap wins.

If Kap plays and is injured he collects 2017 in full. Kap wins.

If Kap plays and is worse than Gabbert, he’s in no worse a position than now. Kap doesn’t lose.

Kap holds all the cards, the Niners hold zero.

    1. I think you my good man are correct. Kap has no reason to restructure his contact. Thats why I think a trade is coming. He doesn’t want to be here. Its what will get him out of town. Just my opinion, Hopefully trade him for a inside linebacker.

  23. This is a big mistake to play Kap because Buffalo will know what happened 4 years ago under Harbaugh and they’ll be motivated to avenge themselves like the Steelers did last year. You can’t tell me Tom Brady is not eager to face the 49ers with no defense. 49ers will be blown out easily and Kapernick will be hurt.

  24. On current track, Kaep is guaranteed this year and will be cut, so low or no money next year. His only shot for good money next year is to play this year and earn it from someone. So its an easy call, he must play this year for his own interests. He’s doing no one any good deed with this. If he plays and sucks he’s no worse off than not playing. If he plays and is average or better, someone will pay him next year.

    1. Considering the Broncos wanted him, but could not afford his salary, there are plenty of teams that recognize his talents, and would love to have him lead their team. The funny thing is that Kaep’s salary is low compared to some other less talented QBs, but the Niners tried to get him to lower his salary, and minutes later his agents asked permission to talk to other teams.

The worst nightmare for the Niners would be for Kaep to go to a division rival, and have to face him twice a year. There are many coaches who would be smart enough to accentuate his strengths, and utilize him properly.

The fact that the FO has stabbed him in the back and left him twisting in the wind so far this season has me convinced that he should go elsewhere, and I wish him well. Considering the FO insisted that Gabbert play ahead of him makes me realize that they are so clueless, they do not deserve his services.

      1. The Ponder talk is the Front Office’s play to stimulate negotiations between themselves and Kaepernick. It’s obvious they came to him with the ultimatum, either sign off on your injury clause or you won’t play and Ponder will. I’d rather they release Kaepernick and play Ponder. I no longer want to win anymore games….

        1. Its sad but that is the right idea Razor. This ownership only seems to act when things are rock bottom. Its gonna be a long year. We wont see change till a new GM is in place and able to change the makeup of this team.
Everyone, get ready for a 1-15 season unless somehow, someway #7 comes in and lights this thing upside down!

        2. Agreed. The Ponder talk is just another front office leak to their pet beat reporter.

I’m sure Paraag is in charge of the “renegotiations” and a leak has his signature all over it.

        3. Et tu, Razor? Even with this cluster flock, Jed will still be the owner.

I still want the Niners to win, even though I will rip Jed with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. Like with Baalke, I will give Chip all the credit and Jed none at all, because we have seen how Jed and the FO have behaved reprehensibly throughout this dumpster fire.

It would be sweet revenge to see Kaep come storming back, win games, then leave to go to the Cards or Rams and stomp the Niners for years to come.

          1. If they finish the season with a worse record than Tomsula, the pressure will be on York to clean house, i.e. fire Baalke, Gamble, Kelly and staff. They should also have a top 5 pick. Then you can bring in a professional that knows what the hell they’re doing….

          2. “It would be sweet revenge to see Kaep come storming back, win games, then leave to go to the Cards or Rams and stomp the Niners for years to come.”

So all this 49ers faithful crap that you spew is bull shift. You’re a Kaepernick fan above all else.

            You’ve shown your true colors.

            1. I think that’s a big whoops on Sebnnoying’s part! Wish he could have that throw back!

            2. Jack, I believe in Karma. Jed and Baalke deserve to get kicked it the teeth for their treatment of Kaep. One cannot behave reprehensibly without repercussions. If you support treating players like they are a piece of meat, you are part of the problem, too.

              1. I never cheered for Joe to beat the 49ers after he was traded to KC.

I never cheered for Alex to beat the 49ers after he was traded to KC.

Both these guys were in the same boat as Kaepernick. Starting QB’s who lost their jobs in SF due to injury.

You can try to back up saying you want to see Kaepernick “stomp the 49ers for years to come” but it doesn’t change it. Clearly you value the player more than the team.

It was kind of obvious before, but at least now you’ve erased all shred of doubt.

              2. Seb,

What in the HOLY HELL are you talking about? Kaepernick postponed surgery so the 49ers were prevented from cutting him so his salary was guaranteed. To suggest the 49ers have mistreated Colin Kaepernick is one of the most imbecillic statements I’ve read in a very long time. It’s a business. CK played his hand. The 49ers are playing theirs. Simple as that. If you’re rooting for the 49ers to lose then you really aren’t a fan of the team.

              3. Jack, I am such a big Joe Montana fan, I did wish he had won another Super Bowl when he moved to KC.

However, with AS, I wished him well, but continued to root for the Niners to beat him when they played. That is the sweet thing about being a fan. There are no hard and fast rules that defines what a fan should be. Allegiances can change from year to year, and over different players and teams.

Fandom does not require one to reject a former Niner and never root for him again. I rooted for Joe to do well even while holding Niner season tickets.

Guess you will be calling out all the posters who want the Niners to tank to get a high draft position.

              4. Houston, you can say I am not a fan, but I will just have to disagree. There are many shades of fandom, and one can detest the FO, yet still want the team to win more rings.

Your take on the Kaepernick situation makes you sound like an apologist for Baalke. I will just have to disagree with you again. They behaved in a egregious and reprehensible manner.

IF, and it is a big IF, if they are so stupid to drive him away, they deserve to be haunted by their mistake. Otherwise, they will never learn.

Fortunately, Kaep is still with the team, and seems to be poised to start playing. Maybe the cooler heads have prevailed, and they can get Chip to convince Kaep to stay.

Sometimes, one can only realize the worth of something valuable, from the moment it leaves their hand as they throw it away.

              5. Jack, your rigid definition of who can be a fan or what a fan is, is what we will just have to disagree about.

I still consider myself a die hard faithful Niner fan, even with my ardent admiration of Kaep. Right now, he still is a Niner, and hopefully, he can lead the Niners to victory for many years to come.

              6. Seb,

Let’s make this easy. Name one single thing the 49er organization has done to wrong Colin Kaepernick. Name one thing any coach, GM, owner, or any other 49er employee has done to treat Colin Kaepernick poorly.

You said, “They (49er organization) behaved in a egregious and reprehensible manner.”

What EXACTLY did the 49ers organization do to Colin Kaepernick?

              7. Houston, I have posted a scathing denunciation in previous posts. Instead of repeating them, I will just refer you to them.

              8. I read your previous posts. Frankly, your comments are incoherent drivel. I still have no idea why you think Kaepernick was wronged in any way. Articulate your thoughts here. What did the 49ers do to Colin Kaepernick that you think is so reprehensible?

  25. It’s Official.

The 49ers reactionary front office is the NFL’s worst….Maybe the worst in NFL History.

Operating without Doppler Radar is tough, but the 49ers bumble through PR storm after PR storm, and it always hits without warning.

Obviously the 49ers are reactionary–lifting the uprooted trees fallen on 4949 Centennial from the latest PR hurricane is difficult enough, but signing Navrrow Bowman at such an age with 3 years left on his old one (20 mil guaranteed) w/o waiting to see if he’s completely recovered; Signing Torrey Smith to a $ 40 million K–22 mil guaranteed and never getting him the ball, while not signing a decent QB to get him the ball is just too weird.
Now this Kap K–something that should have been taken care of already.

One thing is certain, fans. The gang at 4949 Centennial cheating T. Kawakami, The Girl Scouts of America, (rumors of election rigging), hiring the cheapest asst. coaches in the NFL, Threatening to sue T. Kawakami for making 49er annual profits public; are desperate.

That is, renegotiations are about one thing…M-O-N-E-Y.

  26. Bill Walsh never drafted or gave LB’s this kind of money knowing they were available in the later rounds.
Walsh’s defensive priorities were pass rusher and Db’s.

49ers pick odd time to give NaVorro Bowman a huge $77 million contract

Chip Kelly must be a big fan of the veteran linebacker
    by John Breech

    @johnbreech Aug 04, 2016 • 2 min read

the Bowman deal is an odd one. Not only did it come with three years left on his old deal, but the 49ers gave their linebacker a serious raise. For the four-year extension (2019-22), Bowman will make a total of $44 million, which includes $20 million in guaranteed money.

    http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/49ers-pick-odd-time-to-give-navorro-bowman-a-huge-77-million-contract/

    1. Baalke is the worst kind of GM…His vision became so myopic that in his focus to build a strong running game and defense, he actually fears someone running against him– forgetting that current NFL rule changes focus on facilitating the passing game.

Consequently, he signed Bowman to that ridiculous contract (who now is injured).

I picture Baalke in his bunker reviewing old Bronco Nagurski film, saying to himself:
“A Bronco will never do that to my team.”

Meanwhile, guys like Big Ben Rothlisberger, or lower eschelon QB’s like Drew Stanton help light up Baalke’s defense for 500 yds.

  27. Kaepernick contract talks reveal real reason for his absence from lineup
Posted by Mike Florio on October 7, 2016, 6:19 PM EDT

TomD: Kap fans still gulping down the York/Baalke/Paraag Smoothies:

    CBS Sports:
“The fans and media should be used to teams telling something other than the truth for strategic reasons. Here’s who should be upset: All of the people at CBS who were duped into believing that Gabbert will remain the starter indefinitely…

Suddenly, Kaepernick will be ingesting a magic smoothie and gaining enough weight to become the starter again, and the coaches and front-office executives and everyone else who was sucking through a straw a smoothie with a sprinkle or two (or more) of bovine No. 2 will suddenly start building up Kaepernick for his triumphant return to the lineup…”

  28. Grant was correct.

The 49ers appear on track to start all of their QB’s in search of that elusive win:

    1st up: Gabby
    2nd: Krappy
    3rd: Ponderous

  29. Gabbert, Kaepernick, Ponder, who cares… All are career backups at this point and all will end up getting their playing time this year because this franchise is desperate. What a bunch of buffoons in that FO… “We only hang championship banners.” Yeah f’king right Yorkie!! All your family knows how to do is run this once proud org deeper into the dirt. What has your family done in 16 years of ownership? ‘Nuff said.

    1. Towards the end of the Jim Harbaugh era in San Francisco, a disturbing pattern emerged. Anonymous sources began conveniently popping up with increasingly creative ways to cast the former coach in a negative light on his way out the door…

Those anonymous sources were never identified, yet they created so much negative publicity, and dissension within the organization…

Mysterious anonymous sources again appeared with inside information about everything from Kaepernick’s alleged standoffish to bad study habits…

…the 49ers’ latest debacle on Thursday night, in which Gabbert played his worse game of the season…these anonymous sources have made their triumphant return for the 2016 season.

According to a report by CSN Bay Area, a locker room source stated, “Ponder is the best option for quarterback on the roster.” Hmmm, really?

      http://www.49erswebzone.com/commentary/1616-claims-ponder-being-49ers-best-quarterback-option-ridiculous/

      1. If the 49ers are already leaking in the midst of K negotiations it probably means a Kap trade is in the offing.

        1. Some people just can’t help themselves… Kinda like someone who can never keep secrets – hard to change that pattern. Same thing with this embarrassment of a FO/ownership. These leaks always have an agenda behind them and no doubt it starts from within the Jed, Baalke and/or Paraag circles… Heck, I wouldn’t even rule out the York twins. They’re always spotted in the background together: https://blog-blogmediainc.netdna-ssl.com/SportsBlogcom/filewarehouse/42359/b6701362ce7f64dcfd0ff8ee0bb24b2a.jpg

  30. Will we see the 49ers be active around NFL trade deadline?

The 49ers are struggling five weeks into the season, with the trade deadline less than a month away.

    by • David Fucillo • @davidfucillo •Oct 8, 2016, 7:20a

The San Francisco 49ers currently sit at 1-4, and there is little indication things are going to improve. Colin Kaepernick could find himself in the starting lineup next Sunday against the Buffalo Bills, so that will create some semblance of optimism for some folks….

  31. Jason Cole reported on Friday that he heard some teams will be keeping an eye on the 49ers heading up to the trade deadline.

  32. But would Ponder thrive under the Niners’ head coach? According to Kelly (h/t Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports), Ponder was one of the Philadelphia Eagles’ targets when Kelly was still in town there

“It would be sweet revenge to see Kaep come storming back, win games, then leave to go to the Cards or Rams and stomp the Niners for years to come.”

TomD’s Response: I have never stated on record as you did above, Seb, that you hope the 49ers lose for years to come….Your words of are those of a 49er hater….go to another website, please.

      1. TrollD, I still want the Niners to win it it all, but can stand having them lose twice a year to a Kaep led team.

You on the other hand, are a Raiders lover and delight in the Niner losses. Maybe you should take your own advice.

      2. I don’t get that either. Wants them to win but get stomped every year by a division rival?
Can anyone say Kap fan not 49ers fan!

        1. Prime, I knew I would get you to chime in with that statement. Face it. the Niner FO has taken a once proud franchise, and dragged it into the gutter. Maybe it will take losing constantly with incessant public humiliation to get them to change, but they seem to soak up abuse.

I prefaced it by saying I want the Niners to win more rings, so if that is not a 49er fan, I do not know what one is. One can also be a Kaep fan, they are not mutually exclusive, and if Kaep can lead them to more wins, I will be happy as a clam.

However, the treatment Kaep has had to endure is way too much, even for an ardent Niner fan. I have been disappointed for 22 years, and I do not foresee them making the playoffs anytime soon, even with better coaching and top 5 draft picks. The Niners need to start behaving ethically and with class, instead of reprehensibly and full of crass.

          1. It would be sweet revenge to see Kaep come storming back, win games, then leave to go to the Cards or Rams and stomp the Niners for years to come.
            You said it!

            1. And I will say it again. The Niners need to go back to to treating their players like they are a valued part of the franchise, Kaep, or any other player.

You toadies have been ripping and denigrating Kaep this whole time. I have little use for shills of this FO, which you are.

  33. After big investments, 49ers’ defensive dividends yet to pay off

    Nick Wagoner
    ESPN Staff Writer

  34. Numerous people were tweeting and I heard from several folks who pointed to a stadium that was no more than half full.

At the very least, this shows that fans are not happy with the product the 49ers are putting on the field. It’s been some bad football, with no signs it will improve anytime soon.

    1. The Dennis Erickson era has returned… Back to where it all began (after the Yorks fired Mariucci fresh off a 10-6 season).

“We only hang championship banners.” — Jed York

        1. TD sucked too (he ran Bill Walsh off) but I did not stutter… Erickson went 7-9 and 2-14. With the Niners he was NOT a decent coach.

            1. Prime,
I’m with you on this. Kelly is working with one arm tied behind his back because of the hand he was dealt by Baalke.

I have a strong sense that Baalke is on barrowed time as a GM. If Jed was sincere about doing whatever it takes to bring this team back to relevance he will need to start with moving Baalke out.

I said when Kelly was hired that he would likely need 2-3 years to field the type of players that fit his system.
I’m giving Kelly a 2-3 year grace period.

He better win more than JimmyTom or that excuse is BS

                ****

Not necessarily. Kelly is hampered by the same lack of talent (if not more) that Tomsula faced.

On offense, our o-line has improved but our QB, WR, TE efficiency has seen only marginal improvement and I only give the WR slight edge because of Kerly.
Hyde is doing ok but he is picking up most of his yards after contact.

T.Smith is invisible and Patton is lucky if he gets 2 catches per game. The TE’ have yet to make any noise.
Gabbert is who we feared he would be, which is a backup (broken/Bridge) QB.

The defense is bereft of LB talent with the loss of Bowman and Ray-Ray. The D-line is young and the vets are getting pushed off the ball.
Brock is a liability, Reid and Bethea are mediocre and a rookie (R.Robinson) has become our only formidable defender.

An argument could be made that this team could actually be worse than last years team.
And I will continue to lay this on Baalke’ lap. He has missed on countless opportunities to draft (or move up in the draft) to select skilled players – more notably at the QB and WR positions.
                I repeat my 2016 motto:
                “Blame Baalke!”

              2. It’s on Baalke, but if Chip isn’t good for at least 2 more wins over the worst coach in 49ers history, he’s not any good. It would be an exercise in futility. I would remind you, Tomsula had Pears, Devey, and no Hyde….

                Razor,
Good teams with decent players will still find a way to win, but bad teams with talent nd ways to lose.

The two loses against the c’boys and cards exposed just how poor this roster is. We were playing competitive ball for the better part of the 1st half but the talent level on the c’boys and the cards rose to the top in the 2nd half of those games.
Kelly can put the players in position succeed but can’t make them execute.
Teams with good players execute, teams with poor players do not. I can’t put that on Kelly.

              4. Time will tell, but to these layman eyes, he needs to return to college. Did you by chance notice the difference in content between Arian’s offensive game day play sheet compared to Kelly’s? Yikes! Did you notice how quickly Kerley picked it up?

              5. I know Tomsula was not the answer but maintain he was not as bad as everyone says. Saying he was the worst coach in NFL history wasn’t fair to the man. He took over an 8-8 team that lost half its roster and 4 pro bowlers… coached by a great coach in Jim harbaugh and got 5 wins.
So here is the question, how many more wins would Harbaugh have been worth with the same roster considering he only went 8-8 with a much more talented team?
With that said how much better can you expect Kelly to be with a roster that’s even worse than last year after the injuries?

  35. Seb”s Above Admission: I like Kap better than 49ers—watch out Kap, Seb is The Fan:

Gil “Curly” Renard (Robert De Niro), a knife salesman, is a mentally unstable temperamental divorcé who has been neglecting both his young son and his job

In an attempt to bond with his son, Gil takes him to the game, but leaves him there to attend his sales meeting.

      1. Yes!

I also think the Cane defense will be a good test for Kizer in three weeks. The Canes D has several players with NFL speed and they ballhawk.

  36. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/greg-cosells-look-ahead-the-49ers-might-need-to-make-a-qb-change-173905536.html

Cosell spells it out plain and simple. It’s not a problem of scheme it’s that the QB simply can’t execute the plays. More then once each game we see an instance where a big play is missed by the QB. These plays change the dynamic of the drive and ultimately the game. If we had a defense that wasn’t giving up 30 points a game and a QB that could hit wide open receivers we’d likely be 4-1 instead of 1-4.

          1. You know things are bad when Maiocco starts criticizing the 9ers .

This whole story is just downright weird. It seems like York and/or Baalke have people in their back pocket. From the start of the season, some broadcast teams have been pumping up Gabbert even in the midst of poor play during the game they are doing. Tim Ryan has been doing it too although he’s probably trying to make sure he keeps his job. I have to think the media people doing this are being promised inside info because it’s the only explanation for what has gone on.

Then it gets even weirder when rumors pop up of the team trying to restructure Kaps contract in order to remove the injury clause, followed soon after by another report that it is not a done deal and then yet another rumor from a locker room “source” that some players want Ponder to start.

The way this front office operates through the media is obscene. I don’t know how this continues to happen as it’s become painfully obvious they are the source of all these rumors, but it doesn’t stop and they get tv mouth pieces to join in.

Why would any prospective GM or HC worth a damn want to come here and put up with this nonsense?

            1. My take on why the commentators talk up Gabbert is they are paid to keep the audience interested. People know the 49ers suck. They are trying to give people a reason to believe the game might be interesting to watch because the QB isn’t as bad as you’ve heard or seen. They talked up Stanton, too.

Starting the game with a comment like ‘these QBs both suck and we could see a record number of punts today’ is not going to get people watching the game.

              1. Seems reasonable, Scooter. If the FO really was nefariously influencing the announcers we would have heard about it from former announcers or others closely involved with the broadcast. It’s nearly impossible, these days, to keep something like this a secret.

              2. The whole reasoning about not playing Kaep because Gabbert out plays him in the practices is specious when Gabbert may seem like Tarzan in practices, but plays like Jane during the games.

              3. That last line is classic.
Today your promised to some of the finest legs in football and their not on the cheerleaders.

    1. CFC: Thanks for posting this. Many here are saying that Kelly’s scheme sucks and is part of the problem. This article refutes that notion. I’m tending to agree with Cosell. Gabbert has left a lot of big plays on the table.

    2. With a QB able to hit those kinds of passes the D would be forced to adjust and all of a sudden the running game would look a lot better too. Must be very frustrating for Kelly.

    3. I didn’t need Cosell to point out the misses on big plays, but maybe it will quiet the scheme sucks group. They have been there practically every week and Gabbert has missed them repeatedly.

      1. “…and Gabbert has missed them repeatedly.”

Yep, but I did notice that Gabbert was much better last game at the behind the LOS passes compared with previous weeks. But the improvements are too little too late and have not extended to the deep ball. He’s basically squandered his chance and if somehow he gets one more chance he’ll have to by some miracle improve the deep ball accuracy. Can’t see that happening since it’s plagued him his entire career.

        1. Gabbert has proven that his value is at maximum an ok backup QB. Simply too inaccurate to ever be anything more than that, despite having some other good qualities (seems to be pretty smart, good athlete, gets on well with his teammates, etc).

So long as he isn’t asking for too much money to be a backup, he’ll probably end up having a pretty long career.

        2. cubus,
Gabbert’ small window of good passes are hugely overshadowed by bad passes that deflate any momentum on the field.

I remember when Bill Walsh once said of Steve DeBerg that “he plays just well enough to lose.”
Sadly, DeBerg in his prime would be a big improvement over the Blaine “derailed” Train.

Grant said one thing before the season started that I believe will be prophetic; “All 3 QB’ will play this season” (paraphrased).
Heck, at the rate we are going we may see 4 QB’ play this season if it comes down to using TE Blake Bell.

    4. They were saying the same thing with Kap…Missed big plays and all that.lol..
Non story really..Just feeds the put Kap in narrative..or agenda

  37. Razor, did you see Lawson had 2 more sacks today, including a forced fumble that was returned for a TD? The kid is legit, and the headline stats are now starting to show it.

If he remains injury free I don’t see him dropping out of the top 15 next year. Garrett is a tremendous athlete for the position, but if it wasn’t for injury history I would prefer Lawson. A pity the 49ers will get neither of them as they need to get a QB.

    1. Scooter, that was his best performance so far this year, and it correlates with getting back to where he was pre-injury. I agree, if Floyd could go as high as he did, Lawson is a much better prospect as far as I’m concerned. I thought Floyd was way overvalued. As for Garrett, I don’t think we can afford to pass on a quarterback either. Kizer is still my guy and I don’t know a scout in the league that’s going to hold that game against him. Oh wait, just one. Trent Baalke….

      1. I feel the same way about Lawson as I did about OBJ… and Jaylon Smith prior to his injury. Big time draft crush. Love the way he plays. Really hope he stays injury free.

          1. Brooks? Which one? Not Ahmad, surely?

I see more James Harrison. Short, stocky, strong, violent hands and quick. But with better technique.

            1. Yea, Ahmad Brooks the 2011 version. You know, where he brought pressure on 10.3% of his pass rushes. The reason he only had 7 sacks was because he was only able to convert 12.3% of those pressures into sacks. Typical NFL OLB rates out at around 18%. You want to talk about consistency though, he was the epitome of consistent pressure and disruption that year. In nine of his games during the 2011 season, he had between four and six overall pressures. In thirteen games he had either one or two quarterback knockdowns. The only two games that year where he had less than 2 pressures, were the Ravens and the Steelers. They both have similar body types too, thick and solid….

              1. Yeah… but Brooks did that as the other guy. Lawson looks a much more consistent and talented prospect than Brooks. Lawson has better technique and feel for the game.

              2. I always liked Brooks and thought he was underrated and underappreciated. He’s been very durable as well….

    2. I beg to differ. The biggest glaring weakness on the team is the defensive line which routinely allows their RB to gain 150 yards.

If they cannot stop the run, even drafting the next Joe Montana will not help.

Defense wins championships. look at Denver. PM was a shell of his former self, and they beat Carolina because they won in the trenches.

  38. Terrible conditions for Kizer today so can’t really judge him on today’s game. But it is worrying that he has led the team to a 2-4 start. Not all his fault of course, but you prefer to see QBs considered potential #1 overall picks finding ways to win.

  39. What is the best game to watch tonight? The Miami-FSU game has Kaaya, Alabama-Arkansas has two intriguing TE prospects, and Michigan-Rutgers of course has Peppers.

    1. Well, it’s Kaaya that I am most interested in, but there are plenty of players in others games wirth watching. Alabama has some good D prospects, including ILB and edge prospects. Michigan has a good TE too, as well as plenty of good D prospects.

      1. I’ll be scouting Kaaya along with a bunch of NFL scouts in the stands this evening….

    2. Miami FSU. We really don’t know enough about Kaaya yet. The Canes have a tough stretch in their schedule starting tonight. Prime time game tonight against their nunber one rival. I’m cautiously optimistic about Kaaya.

    1. Kizer is one of the most accurate, if not the most accurate quarterback in this draft….

      1. I watched little bit of that game today, really hard to tell in those conditions but he looks like an XXL Russell Wilson

        1. Yep, he’s got smarts, cool and calm in the pocket, elusive for a man his size, arm strength to make any throw, and a threat to run inside….

            1. Naw, the Niners should draft a pass rusher, since Kaep is perfectly adequate as the QB.

    1. Based on what I have seen so far, I think think 49ers should pass on Kaaya unless he falls out of the top 10 and the team can trade down.

      1. Based on what I have seen I disagree. He’s done nothing to change my opinion of him.

        1. Some of his throws have been fairly risky and ones a top 10 pick should not make.

      2. I was concerned about Kaaya stepping up in a big game. He has done that tonight so far. He is looking like a top 5 pick.

  40. Have you noticed the Canes up tempo offense? Chip and Kaaya could be interesting. I still want to see Kaaya make some big throws.

  41. That deep ball to Coley was a little further to the outside than it needed to be, but it needed to be to the outside shoulder. Coley did a very poor job of locating the ball and adjusting. He was looking for it to the inside, which would have given the FS a play at it.

  42. TD! Great throw by Kaaya. I wanted to see him make some big throws and he had 2 on this drive.

  43. Yeah, I really liked the ball placement. He went for the TD too. He didn’t want to settle for the FG.

    1. They don’t respect FSU’s receivers, plus they smell blood in the waters with the injured quarterback….

          1. Give him a bone, instead of humiliating him by firing him on the team bus, and kick him upstairs into the financial sector. Baalke, by making decent FAs avoid the Niners like the plague, will just keep the Niners losing. Very few teams can build a playoff team without FAs. Only GB has done a decent job, but they have also drafted well. Baalke has whiffed way too many times in the draft to employ a winning strategy of solely building through the draft.

    1. Yeah, the INT was a horrible throw, and he had Coley open there but threw it behind him. Not sure if that was partly the WRs fault or not in terms of miscommunication, but Coley was open on the inside breaking route.

    1. Well, one of the QBs looked like a future 1st round pick in that 3rd qtr, and it wasn’t Kaaya. He’s really gone off the boil since the INT.

    1. That was just before he went right off the boil too. Not wanting to make excuses, but you have to wonder if the shot to the head left him a little concussed. His decision making has been pretty poor since then.

  44. I did not see a top 10 QB prospect tonight. A first or early second pick, but not a top 10 pick.

    1. I wasn’t a big fan of Kaaya, but I came away impressed. Taking into consideration Francois is a Freshman, and the way they tried to intimidate him, I have to say I was more impressed. I had watched him earlier in the year and thought he was pretty bad….

    2. That 3rd qtr was awful by Kaaya after he took the hit to the head. He played well the first half and the throw for what should have been the game tying play was a beauty.

I agree in total that game on its own was not worthy of a top 10 pick. But it also wasn’t enough to drop him from being a top 10 pick. Will have to see how he goes the rest of the season.

  45. Game, set and match. I liked what I saw from Kaaya this evening. He had some adversity and fought through it by dropping some dimes….

    1. He played good but not great. I did not see someone who could lead an offense, and the 49ers need that.

      1. Yea, he’s not a guy I would be willing to pull the trigger on if I’m drafting in the top ten. Kizer is a guy that I’d be willing to stake my job on if I’m drafting in the top 5. I still think they’ll go one and two. Browning is going to be a first round pick 2018….

        1. I agree with you, but I still do not think he will be available if the Browns continue to lose.

          1. I’m afraid if the 49ers win two games, it’s going to come down to a coin flip for the 2nd draft slot. Between the 49ers and the Bears….

            1. Last time I knew the team was in a five way tie with the fourth pick, and they were on the lower side of the tie.

              1. I would like to say no, but our team lucked into a few wins last season and could very well done so again.

  46. Kaaya finally made a big play with a game on the line. A big improvement for him. I still see him as a top 5 pick because it is a QB league.

Kaaya also showed the ability to run an up tempo offense. He could be Chips’ draft crush.

  47. Declaring a QB is a top 10 pick is a lesson in futility, especially when the college season is not even halfway over and they have not played in any Bowl games. Seeing a QB matched against top ranked defenses will give a better feel for what his potential will be.

While this years’ crop of QB talent is better than last year, there are great defensive players who should be given more scrutiny, considering the lack of any defensive talent on this team.

    1. Seb,

We know all this. I mentioned Kizer going up against a good cane D. Sure we have holes on defense but if you aren’t looking for a QB you are Baalke.

      1. Actually there were 49ers scouts at the Clemson game. Whether they were there to watch Watson or someone else is the $64 question.

        1. If anything, the Niners should look hard at Myles Garrett, Jabrill Peppers, Malik McDowell, Jonathan Allen, Tim Williams, or Reakwon McMillan.

      2. 80, lets see how Kaep performs before declaring they need a QB.If Kaep can play how I hope he can play, talking about a QB is the last thing they need, especially when the defense is allowing over 400 yards per game.

Look at Breeze. He is extremely productive, but with that defense, they have a 1-3 record.

        1. Fair enough. But Kap is a question mark so it’s appropriate for myself and others to evaluate potential replacements.

BTW, I’m sorry about the Baalke comment. I should never disrespect a fellow Niner fan like that. The Cane loss has made me bitter.

            1. Prime,

I didn’t until that last throw. My biggest problem with Kaaya was that he always threw picks or inaccurate passes at the worst possible time. On 4th down, down 7, and against a rival in a prime time game he throws a beautiful ball where only his guy could get it.

He showed great poise tonight. Also, he lost a tooth and still fought “tooth” and nail to the end. That is the type of guy that teamates go to war for.

          1. S’OK. I am used to posters screaming insults and expletives. Sorry about the Cane loss. Thankfully, it looks like they dodged a bullet with the real hurricane.

  48. Man, Stanford are getting a beat down again. Falk is looking good after a shaky start.

          1. Falk is having a good game, but it is hard to say if this game will be a boon for him due to the Stanford defense being bad this year.

            1. That last TD was obviously easy, but he’s made some very nice throws. He has plenty of good film out there already.

              1. I agree, but the NFL scouts may see it in another way than us. I myself would not be opposed to the team drafting him if they miss out on a QB during the first round.

              2. Btw, I fully get what you mean by Kaaya not looking like a top 10 pick. I kind of agree with you, in the same way I didn’t think Goff or Wentz looked like top 10 picks. He’s not an elite level talent.

But need will likely make him a top 5 pick, and I think he’s good enough to win a lot of games with if he has a decent team around him.

              3. Therein lies the problem. He will win games if he has the right team around him, but the likelihood of the 49ers having that is fairly low at this point.

              4. I’d like to see how this team would go with a competent QB. A lot of points have been left on the field. And the D, while terrible against the run, would look better with a better offense.

  49. I cannot believe that anyone would even consider starting Kap at QB in the NFL. It is madness to think that Kap can play QB in the NFL. Has everyone lost their minds? Can’t you all remember how terribly inaccurate a passer this protester is? Does anyone think in their wildest dreams that he will suddenly be able to see the whole field and hit a receiver (49er) in stride? Kap was only mildly effective under Harbaugh’s coaching and a decent team around him. Jed York is insane for allowing Trent Baalke to ruin the franchise. All York had to do was shut up and get rid of Baalke. Get rid of Harbaugh and hire Jim Tomsula as head coach. That was a joke. Jed York is a bigger joke. The once proud franchise is in disarray and he continues to keep Baalke as his GM. Now how sad is that?

    1. Posters have seen this before, so I hope they ignore my comments, but Kaep is a Super Bowl QB.

He set an NFL playoff record of running for 181 yards, has a 4-2 road playoff record, came within 5 yards of winning it all after throwing for over 300 yards, and was within one tipped pass from returning. Not bad for a QB who one poster thinks he cannot play in the NFL.

Kaep was injured, something nobody can deny, after he received 3 surgeries, so now that he is healthy, and has a decent O line that will give him more than a nanosecond of protection, he will be able to get back to his SB form.

Kaep ran the Pistol in college, which dictated multiple reads, and once put his foot on the half yard line, then sprinted upfield and not only outran the LBs, he out ran the safeties for a TD.

Too bad he did not have the proper coaching that could accentuate his strengths. Instead, they fell for a trap the pundits made when they intoned that he would never be a great QB until he could deliver the ball from the pocket. Too bad the pocket collapsed like a house of cards, and allowed him to be sacked 80 times in a year and a half. Teams game planned by saying their goal was to keep Kaep in the pocket, because he is a hundred times more dangerous when he rolls out. Forcing Kaep to be only a pocket passer was like putting an Abrams tank in a pit.

I do agree that Baalke should go, because he leaked smears and lies about Kaep, and stabbed him in the back by promising to retain veteran leadership and talent, and doing nothing of the sort. He lied to get Kaep to sign that team friendly deal, then now has the gall to sit Kaep and give him the RGIII treatment until he waives the injury clause, another stab in the back. If the Niners are worried about paying Kaep in case he gets injured, it demonstrably shows that they care more for the bottom line than a player’s health. No wonder decent FA players have avoided the Niners like the plague. The Niners forced Kaep to take out an insurance policy in case he was injured, they could easily afford to write an insurance policy to cover the 11 mil that was not covered by Kaep.

It is churlish to insist Kaep not play because he might get injured. He is the one putting his body on the line, but they treat him like he is a piece of meat.

It is also madness to think that Blaine Freakin Gabbert was the superior QB, who should have started ahead of Kaep. The 1-4 record says it all. A 9-31 QB starting over a SB QB? What a joke.

      1. Seb ..Seb ..Seb ..

Sometimes.. you really go off the deep end !

Now .. I’m not a Baalke fan.. to be sure ..
but .. blaming him for Kap’s contract .. seems
        like quite a leap …
Wasn’t it Maranthe .. who was in charge
        of the contracts ? … and ..
who’s to say.. he isn’t the one doing
the (reported) renegotiations right now ?

You blamed Maranthe many.. many ..times
        for all the leaks ….

        remember ?

        And now you’re blaming Cassie’s Dad …?

Neither you nor I … know what ..really
goes on behind closed doors … and to
put .. your .. speculation out
        as fact … is … u-hhhh ..

well… what would you .. call it ?

        1. MW, You have never been the smartest guy on here that’s for sure. But if you have not figured out by now that Seb hates all things 49ers and is just a Kaepernick fan, there is no hope for you pal! Don’t feed the troll!

          1. “…MW, You have never been the smartest guy on here that’s for sure…”

            really… prime ..?

            pot …. meet kettle !

Would you like me to quote a few of your
            “smart” …. posts .. ?

Lay off that Moose Jaw beer, dude.. and
            justmaybe …you’ll regain some
of the brain cells you’ve lost !

            1. Just saying if you have not figured out Seb’s game by now, maybe I should send you up some real beer to numb the pain!

              1. Or maybe just make your points without resorting to unnecessary insults Prime. MW didn’t deserve that, we all already know about the Babble-on Boyz.

        2. MW, Baalke and Paraag share more than names that have double A’s. They are joined at the hip and march lock step together.

Yes, Paraag was outed as the leaker, but Baalke had his grimy little hands all over the whole process, and you can see that the leaking has not stopped.

To them, it is their MO, and I would call it their business as usual.

      2. Ahem, Kaep was a superbowl QB backed by a great defense which seems like such a long time ago… He’s a completely different person/player now and I agree with The Joe Cool – he doesn’t seem interested in playing football these days and it shows. Only this organization would keep him on the roster as the highest paid player warming the pine…. He has a future alright but it isn’t in football.

      3. Seb: I am with you about Kap but if the contract renegotiating gives Kap the option to walk away at the end of the year, that is exactly what he will do.

I believe Kap will get back to his 2012 / 2013 from and go 8-3 the rest of the way, and then will sign with someone else (Miami?) in the offseason. At 9-7 49ers will be drafting 15th or so and all the good QB’s will be gone by then and the team will be stuck with Gabbert and Ponder in 2017.

My only hope is that Jed will fire Baalke as soon as the season is over, and Kelly will be able to convince Kap to stay around. Kap has indicated that he really appreciates the way Kelly has supported him regarding the protests, and that, plus no more Baaalke may be enough to convince Kap to stay.

      4. “It would be sweet revenge to see Kaep come storming back, win games, then leave to go to the Cards or Rams and stomp the Niners for years to come.”

        Kaep fan > 49ers fan

        1. Prime, there are so many different ways one can be a fan. I still want the Niners to win more rings, but I can also wish Kaep to do well. They are not mutually exclusive.

However, if Jed and the FO behave in an egregious manner, with no class, they will reap what they sow.

They will never win rings if they continually leak and smear players, and treat them like chattel. Jed should try to emulate his uncle Eddie. Until then, he does not deserve to win.

I hope he learns from his mistakes, and grows up instead of behaving like a spoiled brat.

Getting rid of Baalke would be a good first step. At least you could agree with me on that.

          1. You want Kaepernick to beat the 49ers. That’s not a fan of the team, that’s a fan of the player.

It’s fine to want to see a player play good as long as it’s not against the team you say you support.

              1. Where did I say I wanted Kap to beat the 49ers? Read my pst again. I want Kap to remain a 49er. The Nines will become winners faster if Kap reverts back to his 2012 2013 form. If we draft a new QB it will mean about 3 years of additional losing while the new guy becomes NFL ready.

Maybe the Kap of 2012 / 2013 is gone forever. In that case WASS ( we are so screwed). At least we will find out.

What I am afraid of is that Kap will play well and walk. I am against renegotiating the contract. Just play him and take your chances that he does not get injured.

            1. No. The Niners can afford to lose a couple games a year. They will reap what they sow.

Maybe they should treat their players better in the future, so I do not get so mad that I want them to get some well deserved kicks in the teeth.

Even though I want Kaep to do well if he leaves, I still want them to win more rings. Saying that I am not a 49er fan while wanting them to win more rings just means that your definition of what a true fan may need adjusting. I guess you love Jed and Baalke, too, so anyone who criticizes them are not true fans.

Some other posters want them to tank for a high draft position. Does that make them non fans?

              1. The discussion is not about other fans Seb; it is about Rick’s post and your blanket support to it. You cannot call yourself a 49ers fan if you wish for a player to beat your team.

              2. Funny, I just did. Once the Niners start behaving with class, maybe they will start winning.

Until then, wishing they win or lose does not matter if they just keep losing.

I totally agree with Rick, and hope that Kaep, with Chip backing him, will wish to remain a Niner. That way, the whole idea that he would leave and play the Niners twice a year is just speculation.

Hmm, isn’t that illegal? Speculation is verboten on this site.

              3. Sorry Seb, but you are not Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump, so you cannot say one thing at one point and then something a little later, expecting everyone to ignore the former. At least have the guts to admit your mistake, and do so without bringing up what others have done in the process because that is just pettiness one would expect from something like a two-faced politician.

              4. Mid, I will not back off my statements. There are some like TrollD who delight in seeing the Niners lose. I want them to win more rings.

Maybe you have not noticed, but I have dealt with posters who try to shout me down, but I have pretty thick skin.

I will not back track, in fact, I will double down. The treatment of Kaep has been sickening and reprehensible. Jed deserves to lose if he treats players the way he has. The Niners have not won in 22 years, and if he continues the way he has, he will lose for another 22 years.

I want the Niners to behave responsibly and with class. If you support and defend Jed and the FO, just expect more losing. I am a fan of the team, AND a fan of Kaep. Jed should get a clue, and realize that Baalke and his minions are destroying the team. Until he grows up, we will be talking about college QBs and the draft, because who wants to talk about the team?

Like Kaep and his protesting in the face of death threats, I consider myself the brave one, with many others the ones who are the gutless wonders.

Be a toady for this FO, I do not care. I will stick with what I said and do not give a flying flip what others say. I stick with what I said, and regret nothing.

              5. So Seb, if the 49ers played against Kaep in the SB, who would you go for? Or would you become Switzerland?

              6. Hmm, Scooter, you are wildly speculating. Without Kaep, I do not see the Niners even sniffing the playoffs.

Maybe you overlooked what I wrote, but I have stated many times that I want the Niners to win multiple rings.

            2. Revert? How do you revert to being a quality QB when he never was accurate, precise, a leader and a good decision maker?
Hot tub time machine but asking him to be something he never was is….??
Can’t say, too many sensitive people on here!

              1. Well,he was good enough to have more road playoff wins than Montana and Young combined. Before anybody starts correcting me please remember that the super bowl is not considered a road game.

So I will take the inaccurate loner with no leadership skills if he will win me 4 playoff road games in two years.

              2. Rapoport: But Kaepernick, who used to be somewhat of a loner, is no longer like that. Perhaps because of his recent openness regarding his stance on the national anthem, sources describe him as laughing with teammates and hanging out with them in a way that wasn’t always the case.

  50. For those interested, the Press Demo has a piece today by Phil Barber about the Mendocino College (juco) football players’ plight regarding housing and personal finances. It’s a troublesome scenario and one that plays out all around the USA.

    1. Kaep was a loner because he was getting ostracized by the team, who saw how Baalke dumped JH, and was dead set on purging every last vestige of JH. The players saw Kaep as a dead man walking, and did not want to be chummy with him because they feared they would be cut on the team bus.

With Chip, that has all changed, and Kaep has some one that values and protects him. Hence, he is more involved with the team because he does not have a bulls eye on his back.

        1. That’s all he ever posts.
If he read more Lao Tzu instead of Sun Tzu he might remember this one:
“He who knows does not speak. He who speaks, does not know.”

              2. Mid, I have never said that one MUST believe every single thing I write. Yous is the straw man argument, putting words in my mouth.

Of course, it is idle speculation, and it is only my opinion. If you can dredge up some proofs that counter my arguments, I will be happy to acknowledge my error. I have been corrected many times before.

              1. Your loss, but you probably could not appreciate it anyways. They use 4 different types of hops, unlike your moose swill.

            1. Beer,

As long as you have 5.9% alcohol I will drink you. If not I will wash my dishes with you because you are basically water.

              1. Seb,

I was just making a general statement. I personally only drink beer as a chaser. Bourbon is the way to go.

              2. Well, you know me, alcohol is not my preferred drug of choice. When they say- this Bud’s for you, they are speaking my language.;p

    1. Congratulations Frank,

From your days at the U, your HOF play with the Niners, to still grinding out yards in Indy, you have always set a standard that all athletes should strive for.

While many of Franks” Miami teamates had their issues, Frank was there putting in work. He brought that work ethic to San Francisco. So much so that he and Willis nearly came to blows. The result, a mutual respect was formed, two leaders emerged, and the team started to mimic their effort and grit.

      Thank you Frank.

      1. I became a huge Frank Gore fan after a report that while many 49er teammates laughed and didn’t feel bad after another routine loss, Gore cried because he could not take losing and watching the little effect losing had on his teammates.

I said before and I’ll say it again, Frank Gore was the heart and soul of this team and a true warrior!
This team has been playing without a soul since he’s been gone. Gore may have seen dark days on the horizon after the org let Harbaugh (oh, that’s right, “mutual parting”) go and was not willing to go that road again.
Can’t say I blame him if that was his mindset.

        1. Baalke did not even try to retain him. They did not even offer him a contract.

I agree, Frank Gore was the heart and soul of the team, a true leader on and off the field.

    2. I love Frank Gore, and wish the Niners had retained him. In fact, I wanted the Niners to have traded for him, but many posters thought that was preposterous.

Congratulation Frank, you are a shining example of class and dignity. I hope you retire as a Niner.

            1. Nope I cheer for the entire team. Unlike you and I quote:
“It would be sweet revenge to see Kaep come storming back, win games, then leave to go to the Cards or Rams and stomp the Niners for years to come”

              1. After being smeared with leaks, stabbed in the back, and getting the RGIII treatment, Kaep deserves better.

Ye shall reap what you sow.

              2. Revenge against the Niners for years to come!
Yeah that’s what I wish upon my team!

              3. Sure the organization has made mistakes but wishing for future failure to learn a lesson, that’s just shows your immature perspective!
Good luck cheering for tKap next year on a new blog!

              4. Prime, like Rick, I hope they remove Baalke as GM and Chip can convince Kaep to stay.

Then I can rag on you for your lack of football knowledge all next season and many years to come.

              5. Seb just shut up now!
This says it all about you!
“It would be sweet revenge to see Kaep come storming back, win games, then leave to go to the Cards or Rams and stomp the Niners for years to come”

              6. Prime, maybe you should take this up with Jed. He is the one who will drive Kaep away.

Remember, you were the one who wanted to cut Kaep, so he very easily could have gone to the Rams who need a QB.

I was the the one who wanted Kaep to stay, but was resigned to see him gone after he was SMEARED WITH LEAKS AND STABBED IN THE BACK. Every time you mention that, I will counter with the reasons why Kaep would want revenge.

              7. “It would be sweet revenge to see Kaep come storming back, win games, then leave to go to the Cards or Rams and stomp the Niners for years to come”

              8. Niners should show some class and stop smearing players with leaks and stabbing them in the back, so they will not want to exact revenge.

Then fans like myself will not say that they deserve to be kicked in the teeth for years to come.

Ye shall reap what you sow.

              9. Prime, nope, you do not cheer for the whole team. You hate Kaep with a passion, and never gave up an opportunity to deride him, and say he should be cut.

          1. So as with Kaep, you’d prefer a former player beat up on the current 49ers D. Figures. As others are saying, you are a player fan, not a team fan.

            1. Scooter, did I not just say that I wanted the Niners to win? I do not care if Indy wins or not, but I also want Frank Gore to do well.

              1. Yep, but when Gore is on the field you’ll be cheering for him rather than the 49ers D. Nice to know you like Gore better than the current 49ers D.

              2. Luckily, we will not be confronted with that scenario. The Niners do not play Indy this season, and Frank Gore cannot play forever.

This is like the Alex lovers, who wanted the Chiefs to beat the Niners. However, I did not say that I wanted the Niners to lose, I want them to win, and winning is way more important than stats.

              3. “I want them to win, and winning is way more important than stats.”

Doesn’t change the fact that you would be cheering against the 49ers D when Gore was on the field. And since you would have no control over the 49ers winning, cheering against any part of the 49ers makes no sense if you really want them to win.

Same principle with Kaep. It all sounds well and good about hoping they’d go 14-2 but lose to Kaep twice, but since you have no way of knowing they would win the other 14 games it makes no sense to be cheering for Kaep to win against the 49ers… unless you really are a fan of the player more so than the team.

              4. Interesting. Why dont you deride the posters who want the Niners to be rewarded with a high draft position? They are the ones who want the Niners to lose. In fact, you are speculating on the Niners getting a QB with a top 5 pick, so maybe you should criticize yourself. Speculating on top 5 picks means you are rooting for the Niners to fail.

I want the Niners to win another ring. That is why I make suggestions to try and help them improve. Frank Gore is not going to play against the Niners, so your wildly speculative scenario is moot to begin with.

As a Niner fan, I feel perfectly comfortable cheering for former Niners. It does NOT mean I want the Niners to lose. I have prefaced my comments saying that I want them to win, so criticizing me for wishing former players well is small and demeaning.

Methinks you are trying too hard to score points.

              5. Quick, backpedal and deflect! Backpedal and deflect! Nice try there Seb, but as you say yourself, you reap what you sow.

              6. Scooter, its OK. I know myself, and will not be intimidated by what others think of me.

When I say that I root for former Niners, I did not include Kaep, because he still is a Niner, and thank the heavens, he may actually play. The whole idea that he will leave is moot, especially if Chip has anything to do with it.

  52. I think Goff and Wentz are counting their blessings right now that the Browns chose to trade out of the first pick.

      1. I know I am. I’m worried we’re gonna miss out, but if Kessler can convince them….

        1. I get the feeling Kizer would also be hoping the 49ers make the same mistake… :-P

          1. Watching Kizer yesterday, I’m on the bandwagon! Need to see more but so far he looks promising

            1. After watching him yesterday? He was rubbish yesterday. How did that make you decide he looked promising?

              1. Without ever seeing him play, I like his size, his ability to scan the field and his poise in very difficult conditions.
Like I said, I need to see more but I can see what Razor is saying and the hype surrounding him.

              2. Rubbish? Ha! Try playing in a monsoon, not to mention catch the ball too. Oh, why not hike the ball to himself too. He showed True Grit in that game. He’s far and away the best quarterback in this class!

              3. Razor, ease up bud. You know I like him. I was pointing out that it seemed like a very strange game to be coming away impressed with him. The conditions made it impossible to get any kind of read on him as a QB.

Are you trying to tell me he played well? Your crush on him is making you just a liiiiittle sensitive to any kind of criticism.

              4. He played as well as can be expected in a monsoon. Yea, the only impressive thing to take away from his performance was grit and perseverance through impossible conditions. You’re right, he’s MY draft crush and I should realize that even if the 49ers were to get him, they’d just ruin him with the current F/O….

              5. I have been right there with Razor for a while now. Kizer has it all. Better get the first pick to have a chance at him.

              6. Better get the first pick to have a chance at him

Best move to achieve that would be to start Ponder against Buffalo, inactivate Kaepernick for the season, then release or trade….

              7. I like Kizer, but I am still in a wait and see mode. He will probably light up Stanford Saturday, but who doesn’t. Kizer against the Cane D will be the best test of his potential. It will also be hyped as Kizer vs. Kaaya. Big stage for both QBs.

  53. The Self Proclaimed Genius, AKA, _ E B, now wants to “kick Baalke ustairs” to 49ers accounting.

The wreckage after this move would be similar to this:

  58. Why would Seb want Baalke still, and the 49ers to lose for years to come, unless he hates ?

Al Sacco on Trent Baalke: “He’s ruined the roster and Kelly doesn’t have the players right now”
    October 8, 2016 at 11:14 PM • 0 comments

    Trent Baalke’s Future

“[Jed York] has to let him go and he has to do it at the end of the season,” Sacco said regarding 49ers general manager Trent Baalke.

arguably two of the most important positions – well, the most important position is quarterback

He’s ignored the quarterback. He’s ignored the receiving group to the point where there’s no talent there.

He ignored the pass rusher this year. He ignored inside linebacker. That was another need.

    1. CFC ..

that’ll be five years after he hangs up
      the cleats …

Love to see Frank and Roger Craig
      both in the HOF !

  59. I apologize if this or something like it has already been posted on here.

      1. SMH The FO is negotiating through the media, and continues to use leaks like the one about players preferring Ponder, to stab Kaep once again.

        1. Poor Kaep…a pin cushion. Least you could do Seb is insert yourself between FO sharp objects and Kaep.

    1. Jerry Jones out drafted us and are set for a decade of playoff contention with those 2 amigos….

  60. Grant Cohn @grantcohn
The 49ers should have drafted Xavier Rhodes instead of Eric Reid

    Hopkins

    1. Watch SNF or the presidential debate? Decisions…decisions…oh look, the Packers just scored.

      1. Had to watch the debate. It was like watching a train wreck.

Trump looked coked up, with his sniffles.

        1. Yeah, I’m sure he’s a coke head. And his kids are all methed up. Please keep politics out of this blog, dude.

      2. Watched the debates, or as I like to call it “The house-lives of Washington.”
This is the first time in all my years that I was disappointed and embarrassed by the American political debate process. But that’s an all together different subject for a different platform.

  61. So the 49ers are 14th in opponents yard per play(5.4), and 32nd in their own(4.5). Interesting….

  62. Raise your hand if you thought before the season began the Vikings would be the only team without a loss at this point.

    1. After Bridgewater went down, no chance. Goes to show how strong and well coached a team they are.

      1. Vikings have 4th ranked defense and no turnovers on offense, pretty simple formula for 4-0.

    2. No way for me, BEFORE the loss of AP and the QB.
      Bradford? ….Please!
      Not me.
      Lotsa surprises.
Some early risers poised for a fall; 0thers: truckin’
Niners: Good Gawd! Are we the Browns? We might be the Browns.
I hope we’re not the Browns. We might be the Browns. Phukadukphooey!

    3. Vikings drafted well, and Bradford is a good replacement for TB.

They were a playoff team last year, so they did have talent.

My biggest surprise is seeing the Panthers at 1-3.

  63. The good news is that the Niners play the Jets Dolphins, Bears, TB, Saints. All teams with only 1 win.

With Kaep playing, those are all winnable.

    1. Not with the “talent” we have on defense !

Think about it ..for a sec ..

Even if Kap plays .. he’ll hafta score
more … points than the D
      gives up …

Talk about setting him up to fail !

      1. Well, they say the best defense is a god offense. If Kaep can march them down the field on long sustained drives, he will let the defense rest.

Going 0 for 10 on third downs is what really stresses the defense.

    2. Not sure we can say that is good news at this point as perhaps we need to embrace losing, even if we do want to win………….

I think Buffalo is the turning point for me. If we win, fine, keep going. If we lose, start looking to go young and move pieces to accumulate draft picks.

I wonder how much Modkins is responsible for the game planning, vs Chip.

At some point, we need to open it up. If for no other reason than to see what we have and to entertain the fans- *Shanahan is looking pretty good in Atl

  64. In regards to the locker room leaks… on Matt Barrows Chat he was asked about Ponder being preferred and stated the following.

“Yes, I’ve heard that Ponder has looked good in practices. But to leapfrog Kaepernick at this point would be terrible for the locker room. And I have to wonder whether any Ponder talk is being done to prompt Kaepernick to sign a more palatable contract. That is, it sounds like an ultimatum: Sign this or you don’t play.”

    1. Sounds exactly what I speculated two days ago. This F/O really is so easy to see through after studying their track record of operations….

      1. I was supporting Gabbert at the beginning of the season as I believed he allowed Kelly to run his offense a little better and liked the fact that he got rid of the ball faster. However, at this point the coach needs to make a change just to seem like he is doing something.
He can’t just overstep Kaep as the team needs to believe the coach is putting them in the best position to win and if he did that, their belief would go out the window.
I think Ponder was kept for a reason. Management didn’t believe they had their qbotf on the roster but thought they had enough talent elsewhere to possibly compete and that’s why Ponder was chosen over Driskell.

          1. March

  65. I guess Seb, and all Kap lovers can move to another website. This latest news has Kap languishing on the bench into perpetuity:

Kap hasn’t signed his contract. Jed-Paraag-Trent just leaked that he did. His lawyers haven’t even seen it because if they had they wouldn’t sign it due to the fact it leave Kap unprotected in case of injury:

The suspicious timeline and other oddities of the 49ers’ new–and leaked–restructuring talks with Colin Kaepernick

Posted on October 10, 2016 by Tim Kawakami

“Yes, my understanding is that these initial talks went on largely without Kaepernick’s agents involved..

“Note to those who leaked leaked that Kap has signed a new K. 49er execs. should not talk about a pending deal until it’s done. And if they talked to Kap about restructuring it’s unethical–should be passed along to the NFLPA.”

TomD’s Response: This is business as usual. The stadium was only halp filled. Making 49er fans think Kap is restructured and ready to play next game would guarantee a sell out….Just like the York’s leaking that they are about signing the hottest FA in the market every year, only to have the Raiders or Bills outspend them at the last second….

It’s called, bait and switch–keep hope alive…Well, you can’t kill a rattlesnake until it’s head is cut off, and even then it still can pump poison into the victim. A head or two needs to roll for this latest leak.

    1. Quit fu-king with fans emotions in order to make your stadium look full on for NFL TV. That’s what this is all about, York. Your pectrified that last years walkouts embarrassed the NFL to the point that you will try anything to fill your season. York’s!….You really are beneath contempt for this latest leak. Warning!

As I’ve learned on this site, messing with Kap fans can be hazardous to your blogging health.

      1. Oh, and by the way York’s.

Today when you threaten T. Kawakami for yet another lawsuit, remember, You can’t sue all of us. Were on to your cheap ways.

  66. Advice from TomD to Tim Kawakami:

Tim, you are treading on dangerous ground called: Messing with the York’s Wallet, when you accuse the York’s of possible jail time offenses such as F R A U D.

Tim Kawakami: “Also, if the 49ers are expressly keeping Kap on the sidelines for financial reasons they are perpetrating fraud on their customers”

    1. And more from Tim Kawakami:

“Kap, if you’re our best QB. If you want to play in this game, we need you to renegotiate your contract before the game without your lawyers present…..”

TomD’s Response: This just takes the cake….OOps did I misrepresent…. I meant, York’s, this just takes the fan’s money; the Girlscouts of America’s ripoff, stiffing TK on a bill, etc ect.

There is no modern front office or historically bad front office comparison to this latest gun to Kap’s head moment…You’re Official now as possibly the worst ownership in the H I S T O R Y OF S P O R T S.

I don’t know, but that’s a good guess. If Kaepernick was approached by Baalke, there would be zero chance of anything.

Whatever happens in the next few days, just remind yourselves: 49ers mgmt pushed for a Kaepernick restructuring before Thursday’s game. Why?

There are ways to adjust the deal fairly. But if the 49ers wanted him to sign without his agents’ advice, you can guess at their motives.

@timkawakami What high quality GM candidate would join this backstabbing/unethical front office? Last coaching search results case in point.

  74. 49ers sign CB JaCorey Shepherd; placed CB Chris Davis (knee) on injured reserve. Another ACL club member….

  75. I don’t know about you guys, but when Ronnie Lott speaks, I listen. He revealed his instincts say Kaepernick….

        1. Razor,
          Thank you sir.

I am still begrudgingly on board with Blaine simply because he has better pocket mechanics than Kap.
But having said that, this team needs any type of injection (move) to show the faithful that the team will not stand idle and accept losing as status quo.

I’ve cooled on Kap since has downward spiral of last year. Some here can defend his descent by blaming a horrible O-line and atrocious coaching of last year. But none of those excuses can validate a QB who has bad pocket presence, inability to read defenses and cure his obvious mechanical issues.

But again, at this point the team should try to play CK7 just to see if he can somehow inject any type of positive energy into the offense.
And if Kap fails after 3-4 games, I say let’s play Ponder, who I believe has the best QB mechanics on the roster.

What if Ponder fails? Well, I think we’ve all known for some time now that our franchise QB is not on the roster. Our 2017 QB is playing at the college level at the moment and won’t be wearing the red & gold until next April.

    1. Stock is definitely down on the possible QB class imo. It’s Kizer and a bunch of second round and later talent right now to me.

The strength at the top of the draft right now appears to be pass rushers. As much as we need a QB, I would take a pass rusher and then one of the QB’s in round two or later.

      1. Same here Rocket. An upgrade at pass rusher would have the same effect on the defense as an upgrade at QB would have on the offense.

      2. I agree that the team might have to wait on drafting a QB until the second round, but it is getting harder to see where this team will end up in the draft order. It could end being one of those first rounds where the 49ers will have to go with the BPA route.

        1. You do that and you’ve just decreased your chances for a franchise quarterback. Harbaugh described Newton as ‘plutonium grade raw material’, and I would describe Kizer as weapons grade. He’s more developed in the passing game than Newton, in my opinion. Brian Kelly utilizes many Pro Routes in his scheme….

          1. I’m not arguing any of that Razor, but the 49ers may not be in a position to draft a QB in the first round. Teams like the Browns, Dolphins, Jets, and Bears will be needing a QB in 2017; it cannot be ruled out that the Texans, Chargers, Saints, and Cardinals will also look to go in a new (and cheaper) direction at the position.

            1. That’s why it’s imperative that they leave Gabbert in until Ponder is ready and trade Kaepernick. You put Kaepernick in, and there’s an increased chance for victories. That’s my opinion. The 49ers can’t afford to win another game. I remember last year the bemoans over winning the Bears game and the finale against the Rams, due to draft slotting. I think that line of thought carries more weight in the 2017 draft….

              1. Kaepernick is not tradeable with his contract and downward trending play. I wish he was, but the indication is no one wants to trade for an expensive, below average starter ….besides Baalke of course.

              2. Razor there is a lot of 1-4 teams right now and all those teams look as bad or if not worse than the 49ers.
This might have to be a sell the farm type deal like the Rams and Eagles did to get the guy you want.

              3. MWD, Baalke paid a 6th Round pick for the likes of Gabbert. His last act as GM should be to get a 5th Round pick for Kaepernick. If he can’t do that, fire him on the spot and tell Gamble now’s your chance.

Prime, when you look at the strength of schedules, the 49ers rank at the top, followed by the Saints at 4th, Jets at 7th, Browns at 21 and the Bears at 30th. It’s not rocket science, but I’d say there’s a good chance the 49ers could conceivably be drafting number one if they do not win another game.

          2. They’d have a decision to make if Kizer were on the board, but my point was Kizer is the only QB I’d take in the first round right now.

            1. You sound exactly like I did last year about the QBs.

When all is said and done, there will be a bunch of QBs taken in the 1st round next year.

              1. Oh I have no doubt multiple QB’s will be taken in the first. I just wouldn’t take any other than Kizer. It’s still early and things can change, but I’ve watched most of the these QB’s for at least 2 years now and I don’t see any I’m enamored with. I wasn’t a fan of Watson or Kaaya coming into this season and this year has done nothing but reinforce my opinion.

              2. Wentz and Prescott are well on their way to building up the draft stock of the next crop of QBs. And both guys are good examples of young QBs that just play smart football within the system. Neither guy has really been asked to do anything outlandish. They are showing you don’t need the special arm talent under centre to run a team well.

              3. I disagree. Each class is it’s own entity and rookies having success this season have no bearing on next years candidates. Goff and Wentz were taken 1 and 2 because they showed an ability to play at a high level from the pocket. There is only 1 QB even close to them in this upcoming draft in that area.

      3. Sounds like a grand plan, but that route is how you end up without a viable QB. This last draft showed teams will pay a lot for a decent QB prospect.

Unless you are happy with a Mason Rudolph or Mitch Trubisky under centre, my guess is a 1st rounder is necessary.

        1. Nothing worse than wasting a first round pick on a QB unworthy of the pick, while overlooking the BPA (see Smith, Alex). After Kizer there are a lot of similar caliber QB’s who will go into the second round imo.

          1. Only if you take a QB not worthy of starting in the NFL (see Gabbert, Locker, Ponder). If Alex Smith played like today’s Alex Smith early in his career he would be the 49ers QB still.

As I said above, Wentz and Prescott are showing you don’t need the special arm talent, just a smart and capable QB that can lead a team.

            1. Today’s Alex Smith still isn’t worthy of a high number one pick. He’s a second round talent that was over drafted due to the priority placed on QB’s in this league.

Wentz has special arm talent and mobility. Prescott benefits more than an QB in the league on what he has around him, but has been pretty solid none the less. If anything it shows that a QB who is capable of playing within in a system can be found later in the draft and if you have a good nucleus, he can have success early on.

              1. Prescott played in the most talented SEC, plus he was tutored by a quarterbacks coach who studied under Meyer, in Dan Mullen….

              2. Yeah the problem I had with Prescott is he seemed like another guy who was a better runner than passer, but he’s shown he’s definitely more than that. I was wrong on him for sure.

              3. “Wentz has special arm talent.”

Does he though? He’s got a good arm and is capable of making all the throws. But I wouldn’t classify it as ‘special’. He’s not going to throw the rock around the park like Newton, Rodgers, Brees, Rivers or Roethlisberger. He’s not that type of QB. Doesn’t have that type of deep ball accuracy. What he is doing though is playing really smart football.

I think you underrate Kaaya and Falk. Both guys are very smart QBs that are good at reading the defense and going through their reads, and have NFL capable arms. I can see both guys being pretty good NFL starting QBs. And while I don’t think either are ‘special’, a pretty good starting QB is hard to find.

              4. I think he does and will only get better as time goes on.

You think I’m underrating them while I think you’re overrating them. We’ll see eventually, but neither of them offers enough to be considered a high first round pick imo. Not enough consistency in the intermediate passing game and little elusiveness and mobility. I like Falk more than Kaaya though and I think he’ll be around in the second.

              5. I’m not sure who will end up where but after day one of next years draft we need a starting QB, WR, and OLB!

              6. Rocket, not sure why it is hard to fathom. He struggled against good teams. This is evidenced by the fact he struggled to put up points against good teams until the game was already getting away from them. The game stats back this up. Really quite simple.

No it isn’t quite simple. This is the ultimate team game. If the QB throws a pass that goes off a receivers hands and winds up being intercepted, is it a case of the QB struggling? That happened twice in the Utah game. If a QB is continually under siege because his Oline stinks, do you blame the QB? It’s not that simple Scooter. I just pointed out how Cal was competitive in two of the three games Razor said he struggled. Goff’s numbers were good and they had a chancd to win at the end. How in the world does that translate to tanking in your mind? Does any QB who can’t score more than 10 points in a half mean they are tanking? I honestly have no idea where you are going with this.

You can disparage my thoughts and call my acumen into question as much as you like.

It really wasn’t my intent to do that and I apologize if I offended you, but your view on reading defenses over anything else was really inaccurate, and not an opinion shared by any Coach I’ve ever worked with or played for. It’s also not shared by Coaches in the NFL as most QB’s coming out of College have not seen the looks a pro defense will give them. You are constantly learning in this game and vet QB’s still get fooled at times. This also doesn’t deal with the simple fact that a College QB only learns what he’s taught by that particular Coaching staff. It doesn’t mean he can’t learn how to build on it and learn the pro game.

The fact he went #1 most certainly does show how teams believe they can teach QBs how to read a D. I don’t seem to recall saying they didn’t believe that. I just don’t agree with it. When it comes to what I look for in a QB, one of the key attributes is intelligence and ability to read a D. Maybe I’m wrong, and if so, so be it. But I believe it isn’t easy to teach, and is something you have to inherently be good at in order to be taught to do it well.

Most College players only scratch the surface of what they need to know to be successful in the NFL Scooter. There are generational talents that can master it faster than most, but there is constant learning in the NFL and what you get in College rarely prepares you for it. If NFL scouts put the same emphasis on reading defenses as you do and used it as a base line for drafting a QB, we’d rarely see a QB go number one and certainly not a litany of spread QB’s being drafted in the first round.

              7. Rocket, I am obviously not trying to imply college QBs are expected to be up to speed with reading NFL defenses. Nor am I suggesting good QBs never make mistakes. But if a college QB makes the same mistakes reading coverages over a few games against the more complex college Ds he faces, it is a red flag.

I absolutely believe you should be looking for QBs that show and advanced understanding and ability to read defenses at the level they are playing at. It is an indicator of the player’s mental acuity and ability to learn how to read NFL defenses. Which are critical attributes for an NFL QB. While you say this can be taught, it can only be mastered by someone with the right mental makeup.

The offense Goff played in meant he didn’t need to demonstrate these abilities at an advanced level compared to some other college QBs, and thus he has always been quite a risk in my eyes. Not saying he can’t or won’t learn, I have no idea, but I honestly think it is foolish to not consider how well a player demonstrates an ability to read college defenses as important in evaluation.

              8. Scooter,

Reading defenses is an important skill but it’s not as important as you think it is when analyzing the merits of drafting a QB. Yes you would like to see a College QB grasp the nuances of reading a defense, but Coaches decide how they want the QB to deal with what he sees. Many have keys they put in for specific coverages and formations. That is to say College QB’s are more dependent on what their OC wants them to do in a specific situation. Heck you are seeing more and more examples of players lining up waiting for the defense to set and then backing off and looking over to the sideline to get an adjustment. We see that in Chip’s offense at the pro level sometimes.

You are exaggerating Goff’s struggles in reading defenses as well. There were some instances where he misread a coverage, but it’s not like it paralyzed him or resulted in him not being able to have success. You learn from it and move on. I also think you are overrating Kaaya and Falk’s understanding of defenses in comparison to Goff. Falk especially has similar passing concepts and reads to what Goff had.

The main thing Goff struggled with in preseason was not coverage related anyway. It was holding the ball too long and putting himself in danger. He threw some good passes that were dropped which made the completion percentage worse than it was.

We obviously will not agree on Goff and until he plays there isn’t much to go on. I will just say that teams don’t draft a player #1 if they don’t think he can be a franchise QB and Goff has the traits to be one. In contrast, I don’t see Kaaya or Falk being considered in the same light by pro scouts because neither has his level of skill in playing from the pocket. I like Falk as you know, but he doesn’t throw the ball down field like Goff did and the offense is a dink and dunk, eschew the running game system. Kaaya is not a bad QB, but he also doesn’t have any special qualities that I’ve seen either. He’s average as a passer in the intermediate game and doesn’t avoid pressure all that well. Could you win with him in the NFL? Sure I guess, if you had a great Oline and running game to lean on, but if you are going to draft a QB in the top ten, never mind the top 5, you need more than that imo.

We have a lot of time to discuss this and unfortunately it’s starting early due to our team not being overly competitive.

          2. I think Kaaya will be a top 5 pick. I think Falk will be a mid to late 1st round pick and may even crack the top 10. There is still a lot of football to be played so I could be wrong.

            1. No chance of either of those things happening imo. As much as teams over value QB’s, there has to be franchise potential in order to go in the top ten and neither of these guys is a franchise level prospect imo.

              1. I see your point. I didn’t see Goff or Wentz as franchise QBs but teams traded up to get them. Do you think we should trade down and try to fill more holes?

              2. #80,

It’s tough to say without knowing who will actually be in the draft, but at this point, unless we get the #1 pick, I’d take a pass rusher in the top 5 and a QB in round two or three.

              3. I’d take a pass rusher in the top 5 and a QB in round two or three.

It’s pretty funny that I had that stance last year, and this year I have yours from last year….

              4. It always depends on how things fall. I was pro drafting of a QB with the first pick until it was apparent we wouldn’t be picking high enough to get a top one. If we are in position to take Kizer I’d be ok with that, but other than him, there is no other QB worth a pick that high which is why I’d go for one of the pass rushers.

              5. “I was pro drafting of a QB with the first pick.”

Only if it was Goff. I don’t recall you saying they should draft Wentz at #7 if he was available…?

              6. Goff was the guy I wanted. Wentz was somebody I had to be convinced of because of how little he had played but the skills were there and by the time the draft rolled around I would have been ok with him at #7, but he was already viewed as the second pick overall.

              7. I think it is really funny how much our roles have reversed. :-) I wasn’t a Goff fan and though I liked Wentz I didn’t think he should be a top 10 pick. You loved Goff. Now you don’t like the QB prospects shaping up for 2017 and think only 1 is worth a 1st round pick, while I think there are a few guys worth considering early on.

              8. Yeah it is kind of funny now that you mention it. Just goes to show how things change on a year to year basis. I mean neither of us had Kizer as the best QB going into this season, and you loved Watson last year but have cooled on him this season. We both thought Falk would be a first round pick and now I see him lasting into the second. It’s all about the most recent info and the fact we are free to change our minds because we have nothing riding on it. Wouldn’t be any fun to agree this early. What else would we have to talk about for the next 8 months?

              9. Scooter, it’s hilarious and I mean no disrespect to Rocket. I just find it really amusing too….

              10. I loved Watson? Hey? Kaaya has always been the guy I liked, and Falk. I said Watson would have gone before Goff if he was available in last year’s draft. And I still think he would have based on his freshman and sophomore seasons.

Watson will still be a 1st round pick though.

              11. How is it disrespecting me Razor. 3 QB’s went in the first in a class you and Scooter didn’t think was very good, so I’d say I had a pretty good read on it.

                Scooter,

C’mon you talked up Watson on a few occasions saying he’d be the #1 pick in the draft had he been in it. He wouldn’t have because he was the same player last year as he is this year, but you were a Watson supporter for sure.

              12. Watson will be a first round pick I agree. Some teams just won’t be able to overlook the athleticism.

              13. Lol no he wouldn’t have. He’s the same guy this year he was last year and now you don’t like him. As soon as all the testing was done and the film watched, scouts would have deduced that he’s not a pocket QB and the comparisons to RGIII would have been as evident as they will be after this season. Even then I bet he goes before Kaaya.

              14. He’s not the same QB this year he was last year.

I enjoy these conversations rocket, but please stop telling me what I think or thought. I know what I thought about Watson. I thought he was very similar to RGIII. And like RGIII, if he was drafted last year he would have gone very very high. Since I wasn’t that high on Goff, and he certainly is no Luck in my opinion, I believe the RGIII clone would have gone #1. Not because I love him as a prospect, but because I think some teams would have.

I don’t mind Watson. Just like I didn’t mind RGIII. But I have never liked him more than Kaaya or Falk. I liked Wentz more than I like Watson too.

              15. Yes, Rocket. Three quarterbacks went in the first and two of them probably shouldn’t have, and the one in the 4th should have went where the Dykes pupil went. All good brother, all good….

              16. Scooter,

His completion percentage is 61 as opposed to 68 and he is averaging about half a yard less per attempt, but he’s thrown more passes over the course of the first 6 games this year and other than that, his numbers are pretty close through 6 games last year compared to this season. He actually has more TD passes over last year (18 to 14) and the same number of Ints (7), similar rushing yardage, everything.

I wasn’t trying to tell you anything other than what you said in our discussions. If I misunderstood ok, but it sure seemed like you were high on Watson.

Ultimately, he’s the same guy I saw last year that I didn’t think would be a good pro prospect but many did. He’s smaller than you’d like, is a one read QB most of the time and tends to use his legs to adjust when he doesn’t like what he sees. Everyone remembers that Alabama game and yet they forget how bad he was a week earlier against Oklahoma. He’s a great College QB but I think he would have dropped in the draft if he would have been eligible for it last year for the same reasons he likely will this season.

As for Kaaya and Falk, I’ll respond the same way as you did to me: How can you like these two and not Goff? Falk plays in an even simpler, short passing system and Kaaya doesn’t have the pocket presence or elusiveness in the pocket that Goff has.

              17. Razor,

You know it’s far too early to make judgements like that, especially when two of the QB’s in question have hardly played or haven’t played at all. You are all in on Kizer after a season and a half. I watched Goff for three years. You have to let these guys develop and put a lot of games on tape before forming a conclusion.

              18. I’ve never seen a quarterback drafted number one with an outrageous price tag unable to beat out the two backups on the roster. I would be concerned as an owner. I could watch Goff for three years and I still wouldn’t like him. Kizer worked on his mechanics in the offseason and it showed this year. He looks like a true franchise quarterback, worthy of a number one selection, for mine….

              19. “How can you like these two and not Goff?”

Simple. Both guys do a good job of reading the entire field. They are field generals.

The offense Falk is in is not simpler than the one Goff was in. He is asked to do more than Goff was. Goff’s reads were typically simple half field reads and progressions. Falk is tasked with reading the entire field. And unlike Goff, Falk doesn’t tank against top Ds.

              20. “Kaaya doesn’t have the pocket presence or elusiveness in the pocket that Goff has.”

And if I thought those two attributes needed to be at an excellent level in order for a QB to be any good, then I probably wouldn’t like Kaaya. Kaaya has pretty good pocket awareness, enough to be functional.

              21. Basically, if you wanted to beat Goff and Cal, mix more zone coverages into the game plan. He struggled with it every time. If he couldn’t rely on his players beating man coverage and actually had to read the D rather than the matchup pre-snap, he could be confused and forced into bad throws.

              22. The offense Falk is in is not simpler than the one Goff was in.

In my opinion, Sonny Dykes runs one of the most simplistic offenses in college football….

The offenses have the same base plays Scooter. Dykes version involves the run more than Leach does, but the passing schemes are similar other than Dykes entrusted Goff to throw it down field more than Mike Leach has with Falk . The idea Goff didn’t look at the entire field is simply not true. Again, if you don’t believe me I suggest you go and look at Matt Walden’s breakdown where he goes over it extensively. When did Goff tank against top D’s? There were times the offense struggled but tanked? You can also find similar examples from Falks time as a starter where he throws the ball 60 times for about a 6 yard or less average and they lose.

I like Falk but you are off base here. There is a reason why Goff went #1 and Falk will likely be a second round pick.

              24. There is a reason why Goff went #1

Still waiting…reminds me of the PlayStation commercials. ‘Greatest awaits’, ha!

              25. “When did Goff tank against top D’s?”

Every time he faced one. Never put up more than 10 points in the 1st half against the top Ds he faced, and his team was down by 13 or more early in the 3rd each time.

Goff sometimes did full field reads. But not typically. Even he himself has stated they often ran man beating scheme on one side of the field and zone beating on the other. Basically he would read what the D was playing pre-snap and that would determine which side of the field he focused on.

The reason Goff went #1 is:
                – There weren’t a lot of great options available
                – He displays some excellent QB traits

But the most critical QB trait is and always will be reading the defense. He was good at this within the scheme he played in, in particular at making pre-snap reads, but his struggles against more complex coverages showed he wasn’t as adept as many wanted to make out. People were willing to overlook this based on things like ‘Peyton Manning feet’, great pocket movement, nice ball placement and his toughness to stand in the face of pressure and deliver the ball. All great traits to have, don’t get me wrong, but not as important as reading the D.

If he learns to read NFL defenses he could become a great QB. But man, its one of the hardest things to do. I’d like to see the player perform a little better in this regard than Goff did to feel confident he will master it in the pros.

              26. Utah, USC, UCLA all come to mind where Goff struggled, if memory serves me. This is all thoroughly plowed ground. The player can’t get on the field and there’s a reason for it….

              27. “But the most critical QB trait is and always will be reading the defense.”

                + 1000 Scooter.

              28. Every time he faced one. Never put up more than 10 points in the 1st half against the top Ds he faced, and his team was down by 13 or more early in the 3rd each time.

Just a little bit of exaggeration there, and I wasn’t aware that was all the QB’s fault.

Goff sometimes did full field reads. But not typically. Even he himself has stated they often ran man beating scheme on one side of the field and zone beating on the other. Basically he would read what the D was playing pre-snap and that would determine which side of the field he focused on.

So? That’s the scheme and he ran it. Doesn’t mean he couldn’t read the whole field all of the time. It was a way the Coaches came up with to get the best matchups

The reason Goff went #1 is:
                – There weren’t a lot of great options available
                – He displays some excellent QB traits

No team is going to trade a King’s ransom to simply move up for the best of a bad group. You trade up when you see a franchise caliber prospect. He was viewed as one of the best pocket QB’s to come out in some time.

But the most critical QB trait is and always will be reading the defense. He was good at this within the scheme he played in, in particular at making pre-snap reads, but his struggles against more complex coverages showed he wasn’t as adept as many wanted to make out.

He misdiagnosed coverages at times. Most College QB’s do. Hell pro QB’s do it sometimes. Have you seen how many times Winston has thrown to the wrong spot this year because he made a bad read? It’s something that can be taught and the more you play in a system the easier it gets. These are kids Scooter. They rarely come in with the knowledge to dominate the NFL.

People were willing to overlook this based on things like ‘Peyton Manning feet’, great pocket movement, nice ball placement and his toughness to stand in the face of pressure and deliver the ball. All great traits to have, don’t get me wrong, but not as important as reading the D.

Seriously Scooter, those things are far more important than being able to read a D at his age, and they overlook it because the things you just listed can’t be taught while reading a defense can.

If he learns to read NFL defenses he could become a great QB. But man, its one of the hardest things to do. I’d like to see the player perform a little better in this regard than Goff did to feel confident he will master it in the pros.

It is hard to do but having natural talent is rare. I also think you are over playing this lack of being able to read a defense point. He was able to put up some pretty incredible numbers and helped a program that was completely in the tank get back to a bowl game over the time he was there. The kid is a natural and the more he learns the more dangerous he’s going to be.

              29. “those things are far more important than being able to read a D at his age”

Complete and utter rubbish. Winston struggles reading Ds in the NFL… and he was generally really good at it in college. That is how hard it is in the NFL. Starting from a low base is a massive handicap.

              30. Utah, USC, UCLA all come to mind where Goff struggled, if memory serves me. This is all thoroughly plowed ground. The player can’t get on the field and there’s a reason for it….

It is plowed ground but you keep saying things that simply aren’t accurate on this topic.

He struggled with picks in the Utah game, not all were his fault, but even then they still had a chance to win late in the game. Didn’t struggle against UCLA, they just got a ridiculous game from Rosen and got out to a big lead early. The USC game he brought them back to within in 6 with 4 minutes left but the defense couldn’t get the ball back. This is what I’m talking about in regards to the perception not matching the facts.

Look at Jeff Fishers history with rookie QB’s and you will see why he’s not on the field. I also agree with it. It’s good for a young QB to get time to learn a system before being thrown to the wolves, especially when the Oline protection is questionable.

              31. Scooter’s right, Rocket. Once you enter the league as underdeveloped as Goff was, you’re so far behind the eight ball, it makes it that much more difficult to overcome….

              32. “Didn’t struggle against UCLA”

Just one of the examples of how he didn’t led his team to more than 10 points in the first half and was down by more than 13 early in the 3rd against a quality opponent. He didn’t get going until the game was out of reach.

“The USC game he brought them back to within in 6 with 4 minutes left but the defense couldn’t get the ball back.”

Another game he didn’t lead his team to more than 10 points in the first half, and was down by 13 or more early in the 3rd. And prior to the big comeback, his team was down by 17 points. Following a pick 6.

              33. Rocket, I have a question for you. Why can’t the NFL’s 2015 draft “most pro ready” quarterback get on the field? Don’t give me that crap about ‘that’s how Jeff Fisher operates’ and you agree with it. Are you telling me if he gave the team the best chance to win, you two wouldn’t start him because that’s how you operate? C’mon!

              34. Complete and utter rubbish.

No it really isn’t and you are showing a glaring lack of knowledge in regards to the development of young players with this comment. You can’t teach natural talent. You can teach reading defenses, fundamentals etc, but feel in the pocket and accuracy are physical gifts. Big big difference and there isn’t a Coach out there who would not take talent over the ability to read a defense when you are Coaching young QB’s. Again look at the fact he was the number one pick. Pro Coaches have different ways they want their QB’s to react to what they see as well, so a lot of the time what they were taught previously doesn’t fit what there pro Coach wants.

Winston struggles reading Ds in the NFL… and he was generally really good at it in college. That is how hard it is in the NFL. Starting from a low base is a massive handicap.

They all start from a low base compared to what they learn in the NFL Scooter. No rookie QB has seen a pro defense and it’s nothing like what he’s used to seeing in College in regards to looks and adjustments. It’s a major jump to the pro game no matter what system you played in College. It’s how well you learn the nuances of the pro defenses you face that is the important thing.

              35. C’mon!

Because Fisher goes with vet QB’s over rookies and always has. Rightly or wrongly, he believes he can win this year with the defense they have and Gurley toting the rock, and he wants somebody who is less likely to make mistakes at the QB position. If Goff had been drafted by Philly or Tampa or Tennessee like other QB’s were, he’d be playing right now. It really does come down to the HC whether you believe it or not.

              36. So there is a standard of having to score more than 10 points and being closer than two scores in the 3rd to get any respect from you Scooter? Honestly some of the things you are saying here are nuts. He had his team in position to win two out of these three games and the UCLA game was a bigger reflection of how porous the defense was than Goff struggling. He certainly wasn’t great all the time but nobody is.

              37. I said Goff wasn’t ready and should have transferred to another program that could help him develop another year. I think I’ve been proven right, and all that talk about most pro ready was just noise….

              38. I didn’t mean the “nuts” reference in a ad hominem way. Just can’t understand why that standard is in play here.

              39. Rocket, not sure why it is hard to fathom. He struggled against good teams. This is evidenced by the fact he struggled to put up points against good teams until the game was already getting away from them. The game stats back this up. Really quite simple.

You can disparage my thoughts and call my acumen into question as much as you like.

              41. I totally screwed up the spacing and html codes in this post. It’s posted again up above in a much cleaner and easier to read lay out.

          3. I said Goff wasn’t ready and should have transferred to another program that could help him develop another year. I think I’ve been proven right, and all that talk about most pro ready was just noise….

No you haven’t and it would be ridiculous for him to transfer to another school when he has a pro team willing to pay him millions to learn their system and be trained by pro Coaches. I agree he wasn’t pro ready, and said so many times when we were discussing this prior to the draft. Most agreed and yet here we are talking about how he’s a bust because he’s not playing. Let it play out Razor. If he comes in and sucks and winds up as a bust you’ll have your shot to gloat, but trying to claim that before he’s taken a snap in a regular season game?

            1. Rocket, Goff sucked in preseason, how in the hell do you think he’ll do in a regular season game. His psyche would be destroyed. Fisher is babying his overpriced, Dykes protégé. Eric Dickerson said he’s not ready for the pros. A 30 year scout in the NFL said he’s not ready for the pros. He’s got a 3rd round pick in his second year and an undrafted free agent ahead of him on the depth chart. He’s already failed to live up to his draft slot, let alone his price tag. If I was the owner or a fan, I’d have buyers remorse for Wentz or Prescott….

              1. You tend to draw quick conclusions Razor, and are just as quick to change your mind when they don’t work out right away. Sometimes you have to have patience, and as I said I agree he shouldn’t have started from day one. He had never called a play in a huddle and had taken one snap from under center in his life. You draft him because of the talent and ability of what he will become with time and Coaching.

              2. Since 2008, every quarterback who’s been taken with the No. 1 overall pick has started in his team’s season opener. Russell didn’t play until week 7 and Palmer didn’t play at all. Rams fans are praying Goff’s career is similar to Palmer’s and not Russell. Here’s Goff’s preseason numbers. 44.9 completion percentage, 4.7 yards per attempt, two touchdowns, two interceptions, three fumbles, and four sacks. That’s good enough for a 55.8 passer rating. Combine that with his small hands, his win loss record at Cal(15-23), and the fact he has NO ONE to develop him. I said it before, and you can call me impatient if you want, this is a recipe for a Goff bust….

Right and the difference is every one of them was drafted by a team that had finished last the season prior and had no reason not to start from scratch with the rookie QB. Whether you agree with him or not, Jeff Fisher believes he has a team that can contend for the playoffs now and wants a steady hand at the QB position rather than breaking in a rookie. This is how Fisher handles rookie QB’s Razor. He’s done it before this way with McNair and Young and you are reading too much into it by thinking it’s all due to Goff not being able to play.

Here’s Goff’s preseason numbers. 44.9 completion percentage, 4.7 yards per attempt, two touchdowns, two interceptions, three fumbles, and four sacks. The stats are extremely misleading Razor. There were a lot of drops by receivers in preseason and his play was not nearly as bad as you think. Read this article when you have time to get an idea of what really transpired in preseason with Goff.

                http://insidethepylon.com/nfl/teams-nfl/nfc-west/los-angeles-rams/2016/09/02/jared-goffs-preseason-dont-panic-just-yet/

Listen, I’m not saying he’s guaranteed to be a franchise QB. I’m simply telling you what I observed over his three years in College and how natural he is as a pocket passer. I see a QB who plays the way you need a pro QB to play to have success long term. If the Rams screw up his development then shame on them, but I can’t imagine they will not pour everything they have into a resource they spent so much on. Fisher did ok with McNair so it’s not a foregone conclusion that he will ruin Goff.

              4. Fisher did ok with McNair so it’s not a foregone conclusion that he will ruin Goff

It may not be foregone, but even you’d have to admit it’s a logical one….

  76. Not sure I said this before, but it was news to me when I heard from a friend going to the game w us last TH that the 49er players weren’t a big fan of Chips………. speculative, but he also had a pretty good source in the media. Take it for what it is worth, but with mounting frustration per the offense, it may make sense- I thought he had toned it down, and seems personable, but who knows what goes on on the practice field, etc

  77. The 49ers are 14th in yards per play on defense.

I found this surprising. It’s not the end all, be all, but it does show the defense isn’t as putrid as I thought.

The offense, on the other hand… Yikes.

I would like to think that if the 49ers had a QB who could hit wide open receivers, often for big chunks of yardage / TD’s, it would lift the offense, overall, but who knows, that might not be enough.

      1. He took a beating in Jacksonville that he’s yet to recover from. Baalke and all the pundits that put forth he was the best option, are sitting in the corner with their dunce cap on. All season long we heard Gabbert this and Gabbert that, board the Blaine Train…ended up being to nowhere. Now we must Tank to infiltrate the number one pick and take Kizer. Let Gabbert finish it out until Ponder is ready. Meantime, try and get a draft pick for Kaepernick prior to the trade deadline….

            1. According to Seb, Kaep would have. Its the ‘take the world by storm’ thing… In this case a hurricane…

        1. Yup. It’s not like he’s John Lester out here. Yes he took a beating in J’ville but he wasn’t any good at Mizzou either.

          1. Nah, he was trash at Mizzou…cause people draft players that weren’t good in college in the 1st round all the time.

            1. Grimey is right. In this case Jax did draft a QB that wasn’t all that good in College. They drafted him based on measurements and potential because his numbers were not that good and a major drop from the player who preceded him.

              1. He still gets complimented on his physical abilities and potential. Potential has a shelf life though.

    1. The YPP on defense can be easily explained by the fact teams have been able to run at will on the Niners. There aren’t as many large yardage plays in the running game, but teams control the ball longer. The defense has been terrible, no other way to say it. The offense has been equally putrid, but a number of plays have been missed in every game that would have made things look a little differently.

      1. I never liked O’Neil but when you’re the 49ers, you get leftovers from Misfit Island. Purcell is putrid. He’s a backup on his best day. Dorsey is aging. Armstead can’t stop the run, and I don’t know if it’s the injury but he’s beginning to look like 3T pass rushing specialist. If you’re not willing to change into a 4-3, you had better designate a draft pick for a stud 0T. This offense is 15 spots worse than the defense. Let that sink in….

        1. If you’re not willing to change into a 4-3, you had better designate a draft pick for a stud 0T.

This upcoming draft is one where the OT position is expected to be one of the weaker positions.

  78. Last January…this coming January… Jed’s presser…

“This season was frustrating on a number of levels. We took a step back from our ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl. For that, I want to apologize to our fans and for everybody that cares deeply about this team the way I do.”

      1. Speaking of banners, Jed went on to say…

“I hear the criticism, loudly. Whether that’s talking to fans directly, whether that’s social media or from planes flying over my head. The results of this season rest on my shoulders squarely. It wasn’t good enough. I want you to understand that we’re going to do everything that we can and we’re working hard right now to put the pieces in place to get this team back to where it belongs.”

  79. Grant Cohn @grantcohn
“Torrey Smith is a No.2 receiver masquerading as a No.1.”

“Quinton Patton is a No.4 receiver masquerading as a No.2.”

    Agree on both counts.

    1. I was saying that about Smith before the team signed him. Grant only caught up to me. ;-)

        1. Believe me. I wanted to be wrong, but the low catch percentage and the talk of how Smith was assisted by Flacco’s double pump made me doubt the validity of Smith being a true #1 WR.

  80. The funny thing is that everybody was saying that Kap got burned with his contract because he had no guanteed $$$. It looks like he’s in the driver seat now.

  81. Sucks it’s only October and we’re talking about the draft..smh..At least everyone is starting to see what some of us have for a while..Trent Baalke is horrible at his job ..Couple good articles out from Bay Area Sports Guy and Nines wire calling for Baalke to be fired..Unfortunately I don’t think Jed and his Adams family freaks Denise and John have the stones to do it..

  82. “Heard the Kaepernick contract restructure is awaiting his signature. He’s the rare player who will review a contract himself. Also like many players on the team, he’s been out of town since Friday. Players first day back from mini bye is Tuesday.”

    -Barrows

    1. The announcement of the QB switch before his contract signing makes sense. Chip specifically stated that the reason for not playing Kap had nothing to do with injury. Had the QB switch announcement been made after his signing, the question would come up again whether they would not switch QBs until he restructured.

  83. Speaking of back-up QBs…….even though we know that game announcers are full of promotional cliches, tonight’s duo were saying before the game that D.Anderson is the best backup in the league. Sheesh, he better not be.

  84. Why do college QBs struggle once they reach the pros?

They are going from a simple system to a more complex system, and the speed of the game is so much quicker.

Also, the talent level turns those easy throws into snap judgments targeting tiny windows.

Goff went from mastering the air raid Sonny Dykes system, to learning a whole new language. The transition and translation proved difficult when his first pass resulted in a pick.

Goff would do do best if he got the Aaron Rogers treatment, where he could study, grow stronger, and be content as the backup. If he got the Alex Smith treatment, it might take years to recover.

Both the Cowboys and Eagles demonstrate how having a stout O line will immensely help the rookie QB start off well.

  85. Jed’s right, we do raise banners:

    Special Teams Banners: 49ers # 1 in NFL in # of punts—32 !

I can only quote Jim Tomsula here: “You can’t be afraid to punt,” when down to the Seahawks with 2:32 Left.

  86. 1. Last-ranked run defense: The 49ers had the league’s worst run defense even before Bowman sustained a season-ending Achilles tear Oct. 2 against Dallas..

    2. Playmaker void: Big plays are non-existent on offense

    3. . The ‘youth’ excuse: The 49ers brass is quick to note how young this roster is, and it’s a similar refrain from last season, when a 5-11 record

    4. Harbaugh never used that excuse: On offense, the average age is 27, roughly a year younger than their 2012 starting lineup that went to Super Bowl XLVII. On defense, the average age is about 26, roughly a year younger than 2012.

    5. 5. GM Baalke’s fate: In his seventh season as personnel czar, Baalke is drawing the most wrath from fans and media, who haven’t excused CEO Jed York’s role …

    7. How might Baalke survive into 2017? Kelly almost certainly won’t be one-and-done, but if the Yorks lose faith in Kelly, then perhaps the next coach could be lured by giving him personnel control for 2018 and beyond. That’s just one thought amid this season’s growing list of what-ifs.

  87. Sakamoto: 49ers Should Not Bank On Player’s Potential, Bank On Results, Bro!

Every NFL team has a number of “potentially good players” on their roster. Players who have a “high ceiling” but for some reason haven’t reached their full potential…

Through 21 regular-season games, Armstead has recorded just 26 tackles and 3.0 sacks. And while 3-4 defensive ends don’t generally boast eye-popping stats, there is no excuse for Armstead’s shaky play as the team’s edge-setter.

One would think Armstead would easily beat out college teammate DE DeForest Buckner for the starting right defensive end spot– having one more year of NFL experience under his belt. But I said all along that wasn’t going to be the case due to his inconsistent play throughout training camp.

Buckner has recorded 21 tackles. A high-volume number, one would think he’s doing a good job with his gap integrity in the team’s base defense. But the film-room grades would indicate otherwise.

Sakamoto: 49ers DE DeForest Buckner Must Show Up Against Cowboys RB Ezekial Elliott

Bucker is too slow disengaging from his blocks, while he appears to be lost in whether to turn plays back inside. I caught up with Buckner and he admitted that his stack-and-shed needs some work.

“I need to do a better job of knowing when to disengage. Sometimes I make a move here and the runner goes the other way, so I need to do a better job on that,” Buckner said.

    1. Rookie mistakes? Yes. But let’s keep it 100! Baalke used the shotgun approach in investing two high first-round picks (back-to-back) in hopes of yielding one of the top defensive lines in the NFL. Not the 31st ranked run defense they see today.

From a physical standpoint both players possess proto-typical size for the position. They are what many NFL scouts consider eye-candy from a HWS (Height, Weight, Speed) perspective. Both look intimidating coming off the team bus, but on the gridiron it’s a different story.

  88. TomD’s response to below standard operating procedure: The York’s are not this proactive and never will be…They are reactionary always responding after the dumpster fire–a day late and a dollar short should be their franchis motto.

The time is now to fire Trent Baalke

    By Bay Area Sports Guy

The Yorks have their ways of doing things, and one of those is the traditional end-of-year bloodletting. Because of that — and the prevailing idea that in the trade-phobic NFL, it’s impossible to improve one’s team from a personnel standpoint in the middle of the regular season …

Baalke is *probably* on borrowed time.

The trade deadline is Nov. 1, and if the 49ers are in a rebuild (check the standings, they’d better be), it’s time to stop doing things halfway. If the 49ers can get something for any of these veterans, the time is now.
    •Joe Staley
    •Ahmad Brooks
    •Antoine Bethea
    •Tramaine Brock
    •Glenn Dorsey
    •Phil Dawson

Yes, even Dawson. What’s the point of having a 42-year-old kicker on a team that isn’t going anywhere? Kickers get hurt from time to time — watch the injury reports, offer him to a contender after their kicker pulls a groin or something, and sign a young kicker off the street.

    St
aley is probably the only vet with considerable value, but there are a couple of things that would 

  89. BASG:

(“Pay close attention to players who crumble to the turf on non-contact injuries and grab their knees while writhing in pain.”) Do you want him putting together a preliminary draft board? We’ve already seen how he dealt with Jim Harbaugh; do you want to see what he’s like as a desperate general manager willing to do whatever it takes to maintain his reputation around the league?

  90. 2011: Baalke was hailed as being a large part of the reason the team quickly became Super Bowl contenders. He won executive of the year. It seemed forgotten that former general manager Scott McCloughan built the majority of the roster that turned into a well-oiled machine under Harbaugh. McCloughan drafted Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis, Dashon Goldson, Joe Staley, Delanie Walker and Patrick Willis. McCloughan heavily influenced Baalke’s draft board in 2010 before “mutually parting” with the 49ers. That’s nine Pro-Bowl and All-Pro caliber talents in the course of a few seasons.

2012: This draft is where it really started to get ugly.

    http://ninerswire.usatoday.com/2016/10/10/this-is-all-your-fault-trent-baalke/

    1. Baalke doesn’t have a draft class to hang his hat on. Excluding 2010, which is clouded by the transition from McCloughan.

  91. Baalke’s failures extend beyond the war room. In free agency, he seemed content in allowing key contributors to leave without bringing in suitable replacements to fill the void.

Baalke allowed one of the 49ers best offensive lineman in Mike Iupati to sign with the Cardinals in 2015.

Kaepernick’s favorite target in Michael Crabtree was allowed to sign for the Oakland Raiders in 2014 and is now their leading receiver, producing more this season than all of the 49ers wide receivers combined.

  92. The impact of the retirements of Willis, Justin Smith, Anthony Davis and Chris Borland can’t be ignored, but neither can Baalke’s inability to find quality replacements.

The elephant in the room, of course, is Harbaugh.

Harbaugh transformed a six-win team in 2010 to three straight NFC championship games and a Super Bowl appearance. The 49ers were pure American muscle and Harbaugh was the man behind the wheel.

That is, until the “Check Ego” light turned on.

    1. And the team will still loose, the qb will look inept, and the complaining on this board will not lose a step.

    2. Kevin Jones ✔ @Mr_KevinJones
Chip Kelly with an indirect shot at Trent Baalke: “It’s really one of the only maneuvers we can make, based on our depth.”

        1. It’s an honest and meaningful comment. The receiver situation is woeful and no change will be helpful. The O line may be a work in progress and sub-optimal for Chip’s style, but it shows some promise. The RBs are doing decently and will do better with better run blocking and better play calls. So only a change in the QB position makes sense.

The more I listen to Chip’s weekly interviews on KNBR (as opposed to the regular pressers), the more I like the guy. I just hope he can get a better DC and players after Baalke moves on.

      1. If he hasn’t yet he doesn’t have to. But what if he already did, and they just haven’t announced it yet?

        1. Niners should just take out an insurance policy on Kaep to cover their arses in case of injury. It has been done before.

      2. Not expecting much from someone who threw what would have been two picks if he had been playing against a regular secondary instead bubble players and scrubs.

        1. Live After Death, like a Phoenix. To think where we were just 9 months ago, most so called experts on here thought Kaepernick would never get on the field again for the 49ers. Through it all, I seem to have lost my appetite for a Kaepernick Chip. Will he be just good enough to cost us a chance at the only franchise quarterback in the draft with a record of 6-10 or will he catch fire and lead this team to a wild card game?

      3. MWN,
A necessary formality to appease the fan base. But even with Kap as starter this team is still bereft of talent, so my expectations for some kind of epiphany remains cautiously enthusiastic.

Like I did with Blaine, I hope CK7 does well. I only hope that Kap doesn’t take it upon himself to become the team’s savior. As we have seen with CK in the past, he can get bull-headed when under pressure and force the ball into wrong coverage or run out of the pocket from a phantom defensive pass rush.

But as I said yesterday, the org needs to make a change to show the faithful that losing is not the status quo.
I will say this regarding Kap, he is being given a tremendous opportunity to rectify his obvious flaws and strengthen his chances at a possible move to another team after the season.

It will be interesting to say the least.

        1. AES

I think that you are correct in that Kap has been given more opportunities or “Do-overs” than Zsa Zsa Gabor. Win, lose, or draw….I only hope that this time proves once and for all that he is an NFL quality QB or he is not….then take appropriate action….

  93. btw …

what are the odds .. Grant
is .. (at this very moment) … typing
up a new thread .. based on Chipsters
    latest announcement ?

        1. Actually, when we were entrenched in the middle of the Alex Smith vs CK7 debates some post were easily in the 6 – 7hundreds range. Ahh, those were raucous times (lol).

  94. Ok Kaep, its finally your turn. Do something will ya. Make me get on board with your magnificent play. Wow me like you did in 2012. Change my attitude about your football capabilities. Will you see the open receiver, will you stay in bounds when warranted, will you get out of bounds when warranted. How many interceptions for pick sixes are you going to throw. Will you stay in the pocket. Will your brain engage fast enough when hell breaks loose and you got to think fast. You can’t be any worst then Gabbert, so I expect nothing and hope for everything. Can you throw with touch or am I going to see 100mph ball when the receiver is 10 feet away. I am just thinking aloud.

    1. Under,
Kelly recently made a comment that the current Kap is not at his Superbowl playing level.
A head coach that makes such a revealing statement is not one that is eager about replacing the incumbent starter.

This change came from the top as a desperate attempt to keep the faithful from losing hope. And possibly a last gasp effort for Baalke to keep his job.

        1. Razor

The only emotional mess I’m experiencing is that I’m moving up to Eugene, and I’d rather have crushed gravel shoved up my nose than to move….Gabbert and ‘Chip’ have been ambushed by York and his FO minions….( $$$$$) ‘Chip’ is being forced to make this swap, and it’s my bet that he’s not pleased by it. Perhaps Baalke is trying to perform a ‘Spiro Agnew’ just to save his job….Gabbert is still the better QB… BY FAR I don’t read TumD…

  95. Jeff Deeney @PFF_Jeff
Gabbert was our lowest graded QB through five weeks (39.1 overall grade) so the bar here is pretty low. #49ers
