Roman on Gore: “He came into this season healthier and in better shape.”

SANTA CLARA — Here’s what Greg Roman said at his Friday press conference about Frank Gore.

Q: The offense is averaging 5.9 yards per carry. How do you account for that stat?

ROMAN: “I think it comes from a lot of things. It’s a very good average. I don’t know where it ranks at this point in the season relative to the history of the game. Everybody has bought into our system and really, really works hard at it and are very involved in the process.

“Frank’s a special back. Kendall…you know. We love our backs. We like it when any of them are in there. It’s been a good trend – one we want to keep developing. It’s not easy – we’ve been seeing a lot of eight-man fronts, but we have since Day 1.”

Q: Frank is getting fewer carries this season than he got last season, but he’s averaging more yards per carry. Is that because he’s fresher?

ROMAN: I think he came into this season healthier and in better shape. Coming into last season, he had that hip injury he was dealing with. We challenged him to be in the best shape of his life in training camp this year. I think he answered the challenge. He came in in great shape. I think he’s seeing things. I think we’re learning more about him.
