C.J. Spiller – Inside the 49ers http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com Updated news, opinions and discussion about the San Francisco 49ers and other pro football action from blogger Grant Cohn of The Press Democrat in Santa Rosa, CA Wed, 23 May 2018 23:28:11 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.9.4 Predict Kendall Hunter’s 2013 stats http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/predict-kendall-hunters-2013-stats/ http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/predict-kendall-hunters-2013-stats/#comments Mon, 05 Aug 2013 17:27:01 +0000 http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/?p=16697 Kendall Hunter is a wild card for the 49ers this season. Last season, he averaged 5.2 yards per attempt on 72 rushes before he tore his Achilles’ tendon Week 12 in New Orleans. Only five running backs had better yards-per-carry averages last season – C.J. Spiller, Adrian Peterson, Jamaal Charles and Andre Brown.

Hunter currently is on the Physically Unable to Perform list, but he runs around on the sideline like he’s 100 percent healthy. Yesterday, he ran about 20 40-yard sprints dragging a heavy chain from his waist. Next, he did agility drills, cutting around cones.

Predict how many times he’ll rush the ball this season, how catches he’ll make, how many yards he’ll gain and how many touchdowns he’ll score.

Prediction: 49ers will dismantle Bills http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/prediction-49ers-will-dismantle-bills/ http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/prediction-49ers-will-dismantle-bills/#comments Fri, 05 Oct 2012 18:41:37 +0000 http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/?p=10455 The 49ers will dismantle the Bills on Sunday, just take them apart.

The Bills defense can’t stop the run – they give up an average of 4.8 yards per attempt. I expect the following sequence to happen more than once: Frank Gore up the middle for five yards on first and ten; Kendall Hunter up the middle for four yards on second and five; Brandon Jacobs up the middle for three yards on third and one.

The Bills defense will not be able to force the 49ers offense into obvious passing situations – third and four or more – and if you can’t force the 49ers offense in obvious passing situations, you can’t stop the 49ers offense.

Greg Roman could call 15 passing plays against the Bills and beat them easily.

The Bills offense will try to establish a running game, too. This will be a difficult task against the 49ers excellent front-seven, especially considering the Bills’ starting left tackle (Cordy Glenn) and right guard (Kraig Urbik) are out with injuries, and both the Bills’ running backs – C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson – are playing hurt.

The Bills will face too many third-and-longs and they will not drive the ball into the red zone more than once.

When they get there, I expect Ryan Fitzpatrick to throw a touchdown pass to 6-7 tight end Scott Chandler. The 49ers have given up TD passes to tight ends in four of their last six games. They do not have a player tall enough to match up in the red zone with a tall guy like Chandler.

I expect the 49ers to score four touchdowns, and the final score to be 28-7.

What do you expect?

Whitner on Fitzpatrick: “He’s going to take the good with the bad – touchdowns and interceptions.” http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/whitner-on-fitzpatrick-hes-going-to-take-the-good-with-the-bad-touchdowns-and-interceptions/ http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/whitner-on-fitzpatrick-hes-going-to-take-the-good-with-the-bad-touchdowns-and-interceptions/#comments Wed, 03 Oct 2012 23:21:01 +0000 http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/?p=10441 SANTA CLARA – Donte Whitner spoke in the media tent Wednesday afternoon. He broke down the Bills quarterback – Ryan Fitzpatrick. Whitner discussed the keys to defending the Bills’ offensive playmakers. And Whitner explained why he knew Colin Kaepernick would play against the Jets. Here’s a transcript.

Q: Who’s the guy the defense needs to watch against the Bills?

WHITNER: In this game it’s Steve Johnson, No.13. He was there (in Buffalo) when I was there. He rose up through the practice squad, really worked himself into the player he is today. When I was there I was a couple lockers down from him. I know how hard he’s worked to get to his level of play. We will have to know where he is each and every play.

Q: The Bills have two good running backs: C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson. How do you defend them?

WHITNER: They’re both two fast, elusive guys. Fred Jackson, he’s arguably one of their best players on offense. He’s a guy who likes to get in the screen game – he has excellent hands and he can break a lot of tackles. C.J. Spiller, he’s a speed guy. He doesn’t really want to go in through the tackles and through the middle of the defense, he’s a guy who wants to bounce outside and use his speed.

Q: Does this offense look the same as when you left two years ago?

WHITNER: It looks the same. They have [Ryan] Fitz[patrick] back there. He’s a gun slinger. He’s going to take the good with the bad – touchdowns and interceptions. Then you have guys on the outside like Stevie Johnson and Donald Jones. Actually they’re going to try to feature Jones in the slot.

Q: Did you guys on defense know what kind of role Colin Kaepernick was going to play against the Jets?

WHITNER: No, but it’s a funny thing, I actually told [Harbaugh] at breakfast in Youngstown – just having normal conversation. I told him, “You know, New York does a lot of Wild Cat with Tebow. I’ve seen our Wild Cat in practice. Are we going to run it?” He was like, “Oh, I don’t know. I don’t know.” I was like, “I bet you run and I bet you score a touchdown.” And he comes out and he was actually supposed to score two touchdowns. And now you gives defenses something to prepare for during the week, and that will take their focus off the stuff they’re not preparing for. It’s a good thing for our offense.

Q: Colin Kaepernick ran the Wild Cat in practice last week?

WHITNER: We were preparing for Tebow and he was actually playing Tebow. And he was looking good. He’s really a fast guy – 4.3, low-4.4 guy legit. I just had a feeling he would get out there and that our coach would want to show our Wild Cat on a national stage.
