The 49ers ranked 24th against the pass in 2010, and their secondary could be even shakier in 2011. Their best cornerback, Nate Clements, signed with the Cincinnati Bengals, and Trent Baalke has yet to sign anyone to replace him. He did sign a safety today. His name is Madieu Williams, and he presumably will replace free agent safety Dashon Goldson. Baalke says he has a plan that requires patience. How…
SANTA CLARA – Practice is over for the day and I will post two interviews shortly, but first here are the good things and the not-so-good things I saw on the field. THE GOOD Colin Kaepernick. By my count he was 15-23 with one interception and one fumbled snap in 11-on-11 scrimmages. He connected with Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker repeatedly on crossing routes and deep outs. Kaepernick makes throwing…
Smith, who checks in at 6-foot-4 and 265 pounds at 21 years old, figures to get bigger. And just how big can he get and still be an effective 3-4 outside linebacker?
Trent Baalke, obviously, is at least mildly irritated by the suggestion that the 49ers will be trying Chris Culliver out at a new position in the NFL. He did play cornerback as a senior – just ask Baalke – but he only made seven college starts at the position (and 24 at safety).
Hunter and eight other rookies have their jersey numbers and a few, Hunter included, have some legacies to uphold. First-round pick Aldon Smith has not selected his number (decisions, decisions).
Colin Kaepernick’s arrival in San Francisco in no way signals Alex Smith’s departure.
Culliver (6-0, 200) began his career at South Carolina as a wide receiver, moved to free safety as a sophomore and eventually settled in at cornerback as a senior. But he didn’t get too comfortable in his new spot. After seven games, he suffered a torn pectoral muscle, which ended his season.
