2015 NFL draft quarterback comparisons

This is what I see when I watch the top quarterbacks in this year’s draft class. Marcus Mariota: Alex Smith. Why: Smart quarterbacks who dominated college football and don’t make many mistakes. Practically the same size – 6-4, 218 pounds. Fast runners, although Mariota is faster. Good passers, although neither has a cannon and neither has pin-point placement. Neither had to throw into tight windows, neither had to anticipate openings…

Top-four questions the 49ers face against the Bears

We all know the 49ers will beat the Bears this Sunday Night. I’m saying the final score will be 24-13. The game will not be close. That said, these are the four questions that interest me most about this game: 1. Who will lead the 49ers in rushing, Frank Gore or Carlos Hyde? The Bears gave up 7.3 yards per carry on 21 read-option runs against the Bills last week….

Dontae Johnson expects Jay Cutler to test him Sunday Night

SANTA CLARA – Dontae Johnson was interviewed next to his locker Thursday afternoon. Here’s a transcript Q: Going up against Jay Cutler do you expect to be targeted a little more just because you’re the rookie? JOHNSON: Yeah, absolutely. That’s just one of the things: “He’s a rookie. Let’s see if he can play this game.” That’s one of the things that comes with being a rookie. You’ve got to…

Report: Kaepernick wants more money than Cutler and Romo

According to the Boston Globe, Colin Kaepernick wants a contract extension that is worth as much or more than the contract extensions Jay Cutler and Tony Romo recently signed. The Cowboys gave Romo $18 million per season and $40 million guaranteed. The Bears gave Cutler $18.1 million per season and $38 million guaranteed. If you were the 49ers right now, would you give Kaepernick an $18.2-million-per-year contract extension with $40…

Bears-49ers matchups: Part II – Brandon Marshall vs. 49ers secondary

The 49ers play the Bears Monday night at Candlestick.  In the meantime, I’ll break down five key matchups. Brandon Marshall vs. the 49ers secondary Like Crabtree, Marshall lines up all over the Bears formations – left receiver, right receiver and the slot. So he will face all three 49er cornerbacks – Carlos Rogers, Tarell Brown and Chris Culliver. Marshall does not have the quickness to separate from any of them….

Rogers expects the Bears to run the ball against the 49ers

SANTA CLARA – Carlos Rogers spoke in the media tent Friday afternoon. Here’s what he said he expects from the Bears offense Monday night. Q: The Bears have named Jason Campbell as their starter for the Monday night game. How much does that impact the game? ROGERS: It doesn’t matter. I think both of them have strong arms, the ability to throw any throw. We know what Cutler can do….

With Campbell at QB, the Bears offense could be relegated to field goals vs. 49ers

Now that Jason Campbell has officially been named the starting quarterback against the 49ers, the Bears’ passing game definitely will be impacted and mostly restricted to a conservative, low risk play calling style by offensive coordinator Mike Tice.  Campbell’s release is nowhere as quick as Cutler’s, and Campbell’s ability to extend a play is marginal when compared to Cutler’s, so the Bears’ run game must keep the down and distance…

Report: Campbell will start at QB for Bears against 49ers

The Chicago Bears official twitter account just announced that backup quarterback Jason Campbell will start at quarterback against the 49ers Monday night. Their starting quarterback, Jay Cutler, suffered the sixth concussion of his career a few days ago. Alex Smith suffered his second concussion in two years on Sunday. The 49ers are expected to decide today whether or not he will play against Bears on Monday, but the 49ers may…

Bears run O vs. 49ers run D

A quarterback’s best friend is a good running game, and although the Bears have two decent running backs in Matt Forte and Michael Bush, offensive coordinator Mike Tice often has strayed from attempting to establish the ground game, and is way too focused on passing. The biggest weakness for the Bears from an offensive-structure standpoint is their pass protection. They continually expose Jay Cutler, or subsequent QBs, to hits, knock downs and…
