Lawrence Dushensky of the NFL blog This Given Sunday asked me six questions about the 49ers. The theme of his line of questioning was this: Can the 49ers shock the Saints? And how could they possibly do it? I’m linking my six answers to my six questions at the bottom. To be clear, I do […]
The 49ers cut Braylon Edwards, according to multiple reports. Edwards made this statement on his website: ”I was released today by the 49ers due to my injury that required more time to rehab and hasn’t allowed me to re-sync with the offense. I wish the 49ers organization the best of luck during the Playoffs. “I will […]
Today my dad wrote his column about why Trent Baalke has to be the NFL executive of the year, and about his dead-mackerel stare. He points out how Baalke’s key additions to the defense have elevated it from good to great, and he also points out how his dead-mackerel stare can sometimes look more like […]
The great Matt Barrows made his case on KNBR a few days ago for DT Justin Smith as the Niners’ 2011 MVP. That’s a terrific selection, and it’s hard to argue with it – Justin Smith has been the best player on the league’s best defense this season. He’s certainly been the Niners most excellent […]
SAN FRANCISCO – Janie McCauley of the Associated Press and I just spoke with 49ers owner John York on the side of the field. You should have seen the smile on his face. The official adjective to describe him is “giddy.” Here’s what he said. Q: We haven’t had a chance to talk to you […]
Matt Maiocco reports that Carlos Rogers would like to sign a long-term extension with the 49ers. Here’s what Rogers said to Maiocco: “If we can get something worked out, that would be great. My agent (Todd France) knows that I like what’s going on here. This has been great for me, and I would love […]
Trent Dilfer just wrote a series of tweets on the 49ers which he tagged #filmstudy. Here’s what he wrote. 1. Alex Smith DEALING in Big Moments whole year, Vertical accuracy has been very good. Passing game making strides” 2. “Iupati 77 is going to be a premier OG for years. Huge, great feet, great length, […]
According to Adam Schefter, the 49ers will receive a 2013 7th round pick from the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for Taylor Mays, who was a second round pick in 2010. A future 7th round pick is better than nothing for a player whom defensive coordinator Vic Fangio seemed to suggest was not NFL caliber. Still, […]
Trent Baalke spoke about Frank Gore’s potential contract extension this afternoon on SiriusXM NFL Radio. Here’s what he said: “The best thing we can say is we’re doing everything we can to make Frank a 49er for life and whether that gets accomplished in the near future or not remains to be seen. But Frank’s […]
According to Pro Football Talk, The 49ers will resign Safety Dashon Goldson to a one-year contract. This is a good thing for three reasons. You can never have enough good players on a football team, and now the Niners have four good safeties – Goldson, Donte Whitner, Madieu Williams, and Reggie Smith. It protects the […]
SANTA CLARA – Frank Gore was suited up and active for the beginning practice today, making cuts and catching passes, but he wasn’t the center of attention. Why? Because general manager Trent Baalke was on the field. For the first fifteen minutes he stood ten feet away from the offensive line and stared at them […]
SANTA CLARA – According to reports, former 49ers nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin signed with The New Orleans Saints this afternoon. The deal is for one season. With Franklin out of the picture, the 49ers defensive line would appear to be set, barring injury. It is: Justin Smith at RDE, Isaac Sopoaga at NT, and Ray […]
SANTA CLARA – New general manager Trent Baalke spoke to the media behind a tent at the end of practice this afternoon. He insisted he has a plan and he’s executing it, even though the 49ers haven’t brought in any big name free agents. Here’s the transcript. Q: There are reports that Plaxico Burress is […]
Colin Jones was, in effect, a gift to special teams coordinator Brad Seely, who has generally had two or three special-teams-only stalwarts during his decorated career as an assistant.
Trent Baalke, obviously, is at least mildly irritated by the suggestion that the 49ers will be trying Chris Culliver out at a new position in the NFL. He did play cornerback as a senior – just ask Baalke – but he only made seven college starts at the position (and 24 at safety).
