Training camp report: Sunday, the not-so-good – A.J. Jenkins struggles

SANTA CLARA — Despite the fact that Jim Harbaugh called A.J. Jenkins an outstanding football player before today’s practice, Jenkins was not outstanding today in practice. He struggled in the one-on-one press coverage drill against Perrish Cox and Deante Purvis. On Jenkins’ first rep, he ran deep but he forgot to look for the pass, so it dropped 10 yards away from him. On his second rep he caught a back shoulder pass with Cox all over him, and on this third rep he dropped a back shoulder pass. He caught only one more pass the rest of practice.

Here’s what Jenkins said about his performance: “It’s never as good as (it looks) on film, it’s never as bad as (it looks) on film. I’m going to look on film today, but Perrish Cox is a great DB, very good competition.”

Undrafted rookie wide receiver Brian Tyms also had a rough day. During a special teams drill he got tangled up with sixth-round pick Trenton Robinson and threw him to the ground. Harbaugh instantly reprimanded Tyms and told him to leave practice. Tyms never returned to the field, but he lifted weights and spoke with Harbaugh for almost 10 minutes after practice.
