Training camp report: Tuesday, the good – Manningham hitting his stride

SANTA CLARA – The first-team offense and defense mainly faced scout teams (third stringers) at today’s practice, so most of the starters looked unstoppable. With that in mind, here was the best of the best from Tuesday.

At one point in a red-zone seven-on-seven drill, Alex Smith threw four touchdowns over a five-pass span.

Randy Moss caught two of those TD passes. He was being covered by undrafted rookie Deante Purvis both times, and twice Moss beat him to the inside.

Later, Alex Smith threw a beautiful 33-yard touchdown pass to Mario Manningham, who was being trailed by Purvis, deep down the sideline.

Manningham caught a few deep passes, and it seemed like every time he ran a route he was wide open. He’s taken fewer reps than the other receivers have in training camp, but when he’s played he’s looked like the receiver the Niners’ cornerbacks have the most difficulty covering.

Michael Crabtree has been tough for the cornerbacks to cover as well. Today he beat Carlos Rogers and Dashon Goldson in the end zone to catch a touchdown pass from Colin Kaepernick.
