Vernon Davis on Braylon Edwards: “I don’t know what’s going on. Is he still rehabbing?”

SANTA CLARA — Vernon Davis spoke at his locker today for the first time in a couple weeks.

Q: Were you happy with how you were utilized on Monday night?

VERNON DAVIS: “Yeah, I was very excited that I was able to be involved in the passing game and help my team win. It’s a credit to Alex Smith and our defense for keeping us out there and keeping things alive for us. I was very, very excited.”

Q: Is Alex the long-term answer at QB?

VERNON DAVIS: “To me, I strongly believe that Alex Smith can do nothing but just keep getting better. At this point, all he can do is get better. He’s willing and that’s what he wants. He wants to be successful and learn as much as he possibly can about this game and try to find ways to help this team get better down the road. I’m all for it. I’m a big supporter.”

Q: You had a tweet saying you’re lucky to have Braylon Edwards on this team. What was behind that?

VERNON DAVIS: “When you have a guy who is as talented and who has some success like he has, and everything is not going the way you want it to go – and I don’t know what’s going on. I guess he’s still rehabbing?”

Q: We don’t know.

VERNON DAVIS: “I haven’t talked to him, so I don’t know what the deal is. But he’s standing out there and by the look on his face you know he wants to be out there bad. I don’t know the reason why he’s not. That’s up to the coaches and the trainers. But just by saying kind words like that keeps a guy level-headed and keeps him hungry. Keeps him ready to go at any time.

“And I just felt that upon my spirit to just lay it out there. And he is. He is. He’s a guy that’s great to have on the team. He’s a true playmaker. If he gets an opportunity, I’m sure he’ll take advantage of it.”

ME: Did you do that as a leader or as a friend?

VERNON DAVIS: “Just being a leader at that point. That’s all that is. Just being a leader. Being accountable. And just helping out my teammates.”

Q: Braylon hasn’t played much. Does he have anything to prove in this locker room?

VERNON DAVIS: “To me, I mean I already know what he can do. I’ve spent a lot of time with him since he got here. And I watched him play and saw some of the things he can do in practice. And I appreciate him during the game, and some of the sparks he’s had. He’s great.

“He just needs to find a consistent path for himself and get out there and get after it.”

Q: What do you make of the way the Seahawks have played lately?

VERNON DAVIS: “This is the NFL. Things can change at any moment. And we can’t take anybody lightly. They’re playing well. This is not the same team we played a few months ago. We just have to watch film and really be detailed in our assignments and play this game like we played Monday night. That’s how we have to approach it.”

Q: How do the young Seahawks safeties look?

VERNON DAVIS: “They’re good. They’re good. They’re good at what they do. They’re fast. They’re around the ball and they’re making plays. We can’t take them lightly, like I said before. We have to approach this game like it’s very important.”

Q: Did the offensive line take a step forward?

VERNON DAVIS: “They took a huge step. The offensive line was incredible. They took a huge step. They were detailed in their assignments. They played well. They played fast at the snap. And they played to win.”

Q: Will this be the best NFC West game?

VERNON DAVIS: “I think this probably will be the highest-quality game. Those guys are good. I won’t take anything away from them. They have playmakers on both sides of the ball. And they’re going to play us like it’s the Super Bowl, pretty much.

“We’ve been in that position before. I remember, (when we were) losing, looking forward to playing the best team because we had something to prove. That’s what they’re going to do – they’re going to play us as hard as they possibly can.”
