SANTA CLARA — Check out my Periscope report for Thursday’s training camp practice. I will post detailed breakdown of the good and not so good from today, so stay tuned.

  1. I figured that they would attack AW. He was one of my question marks on defense if Sherman proved out.

  2. Nice run down, Grant.
Not to worry about Jimi_G– he can always consult Brian Hoyer on how to be the TC MVP…

  3. Arrow up Grant. Now if you could hire a caddy named Seb to gleen insight from, it would sound something like this:

Foster will not even be allowed to play the first 2 games. Great LBs play every game.

Thank you, captain obvious. I’d like to add to this self evident line of conversation, if I may: the forward pass is a strategy in football

      1. TrollD, some day you will learn that if you want to look smart, and write an effective screed, it is best not to make spelling errors. When you cannot even spell, it just makes you look clueless.
        .
        Please try harder.

  4. Good job Grant. I saw you trying to remember to glance at the camera ;)

FWIW, there was an article from Barrows on the Athletic yesterday about how poorly Garoppolo would look at times in practice for the Patriots to the point most of the local writers believed he couldn’t play. Then he goes out and carves teams up when the lights are on. It seems like he’s a gamer and only plays at a high level when it’s live. Some guys are like that.

    1. Yes, there were 9er QBs in the glory years who would occasionally frustrate during training camp and practice, but would rip opponents hearts out during the regular season.

    2. “Some guys are like that.”

Usually scramblers, guys who thrive at extending plays. Garoppolo is more of a rhythm passer. He should be great in practice.

        1. He is good at extending plays, but he doesn’t have to.

Good so far. I’ll watch him closely in one on ones this Saturday.

  5. Nice backdrop…a cheap black tablecloth from the Bed, Bath and Beyond clearance rack?

  6. Yes. And apparently he also views practice as a time to try very difficult throws and see which of his receivers can make difficult catches. Grant says JG was 4 for 9, but also acknowledges that Pettis, I think it was, dropped one thrown right to him.

      1. Grant,
        Thanks for the report.
I’m hoping for the best from Pettis because there were other good WR’s that we could have picked aside from him. But I agree with your take that he will contribute as a STR in his first season.

I’m actually a little more disappointed/concerned in Solomon Thomas than Pettis because Thomas seems to be slow at the edge position and unlike Pettis he IS a starter. We are going to need at least two very strong players on the front D-line. We already know Buckner will be top shelf, what we don’t know is who that other player will emerge to compliment Buck.
Will Armstead finally play like a #1?
Maybe Earl Mitchell becomes more than an accessory type player.
Perhaps Sheldon Day, Ronnie Blair or D.J. Jones emerges this season.
I’ve heard some nice things about Jullian Taylor but he’s a rookie.

Hopefully this is ironed out in a few weeks.

  7. Grant,
I tried to tell you last year that Beathard was potentially a very good QB {not great} but very good. I look forward to seeing him in the preseason.

    1. Oldcoach,
Grant mentioned the word “courage” in his video.
Beathard has a boat load of courage!

If something happens to Garoppolo that requires him to miss any time, we know that C.J. will take the field like a Marine.

    2. I recall someone who writes opinion pieces assert (April 2017)…

“This pick wouldn’t be so terrible had the 49ers taken C.J. Beathard in the sixth or seventh round. While he clearly lacks the skill set of an NFL starting quarterback, he may be a decent backup one day.

But the Niners drafted Beathard in the third round.

And they traded up to get him.

      C.J. freaking Beathard.”

Nevermind it was determined that other teams were showing strong interest in CJB, and CJB was familiar with Shanahan’s approach to offense.

  8. First Couple Hours, at first day of TC, and everybody is already freaking out!?!??
Everybody Chill out. including you Grant…

    1. Yeah….this happened last year after the first training camp practice. Few positives and copious hair-on-fire fails.

      1. With good reason obviously.
The Niners didn’t exactly do ANYTHING until it didn’t matter anymore. That’s their way. Win the meaningless ones.
Let each practice session stand in isolation; on it’s own. I appreciate the honest commentary now. Not “let’s wait until the next one”. And then “the next one”.
        Homers. smh.

  9. Here’s Eric Crocker on Witherspoon:

His confidence carried over to team drills where the 6-foot-3 corner was fluid, aggressive and technically sound.
Witherspoon nearly intercepted the first play from 7v7. Peeling off of his guy, he jumped an out route that was just out of his reach.

    — On one of the following plays in 7v7, his guy went away – and with his eyes, Witherspoon drove down on the crosser full speed forcing the throw elsewhere.

    — Shortly after that Witherspoon broke up what looked like a bang 8 (short post but deeper than a slant). That was a route the 49ers had trouble with in the 2017 season.

Much more detail coming from a former DB than Grant’s cursory analysis

    1. Crocker is very good. But I was much closer to the field than he was, and Witherspoon didn’t break up that bang 8. He didn’t touch it. Goodwin dropped it. Tough to see from the stands.

  10. This stuff about Jimmy not being “professional” enough is really simplistic analysis. What does that even mean? That he wasn’t trying hard? This is the same guy who organized a few throwing sessions with his receivers. The same guy who made everybody stay after practice to work on cadences. Inaccuracy on the first day of Jimmy’s first training camp in Shanahan’s system isn’t an indicator of anything IMO.

Also: Aaron Rodgers threw a pick on his first play today. Super unprofessional.

  11. Grant that is awesome. I like the periscope.

Do not worry about Jimmy. He’ll be fine.

  12. I really liked Pettis as a round 3-5 pick.

I was surprised they moved up for Pettis, but not upset. Lynch and Shanahan are football evaluators and I’m not. In the end mock drafts are (fun) nonsense. Exercises challenging reason and judgement, but nothing more.

Pettis was an expensive acqusition. Only a little less draft capital than was spent acquiring AJ Jenkins. That’s the standard I’ll use to grade the pick a few years from now.

Spent: 59+74 – 530 points. Roughly pick value of 37 overall
Got: 44+142 – 495 points. Roughly pick value of 40 or 41 overall

(I’m fine with losing chart value on a trade of you love the player)

I really like Pettis’ film. I was a fan of him before we drafted him. In interviews he seems smart, likable. It will be fun watching him.

    1. His route running was one of the best, if not the best of all receivers in his class.

  13. Loved some of his red zone routes.

One thing in common with Taylor… Pettis uses his whole body with deep leg bends and hip sinking to gain separation. Many receivers try to shake coverage with plain steps. But Taylor and Pettis fake defenders with committed leg plants and dips. They sell the fake 100%.

Shanahan (like Bill Walsh) was a receiver. I’m guessing there’s certain traits he’s looking for. If the Taylor/Pettis pattern holds all future 49ers receivers will be good at separation, routes, hands.

    1. separation, routes, hands… and body control. Also lime the way Petts keeps his feet after the catch.

  14. 4 for 9 just isn’t good enough? But you even mentioned a drop by Goodwin and I read of another drop by Kittle. Going 6 for 9 would be 66% then right. Is that good enough? Even so what does that have to do with “professionalism”. Having an off day or having your receivers drop a few passes in no way means you’re not acting like a professional. Lastly you mentioned Brady as the GOAT but I really liked the article you wrote, this year I think, where you made the case that Brady wasn’t better than Montana. So which is it?

    1. That was not a drop by Kittle. That was a pass break up by Brock Coyle. He had his hands all over that pass.

Brady is the GOAT of his era.

      1. Grant sez:
“…. Brady is the GOAT of his era….”

        “of his era …”? ….
H-mmm … but …. “The Joe” remains the GOAT
of all time … He never lost a SB … and will forever
hold the SB record of 55 points over horse face’s
        meager 10 points …

When did Brady ever do either ? ….
Well … I submit the …”..best of his era..”
        isn’t… good enough ….

Wasn’t it Vince Lombardi who said ..(paraphrasing.. here) ..
“Come in 2nd place … and you’re STILL a loser”

(The invite below still stands… Grant …
        I just had to get a dig in… before we leave .. ;-} )

  15. anyone going to be at the open TC on Aug 7th ?
    If so…. stop by…and say hi !! … I’ll be the one wearing my #10 …
(probably up in the nosebleeds ) …in hopes of
getting my jersey signed by Jimmy (himself)

Grant … this invite goes to you, too !

  16. MWNiner I will be there August 7th!! But many people will be also wearing #10….

    1. “…..But many people will be also wearing #10….

      Yeah… I realize that… maybe another clue
might be in order …. I’ll be also sporting my fabulous
grey hair … and my sexy white beard … ;-} ..
(that should narrow it down a bit)

But … hey… I’d love to meet you … and any other members
of this blog site … cuz
after the visit to Levis … we’ll be on our way back home ..
and the only other .. opportunity
I might have to get it signed .. would be if I am able to
score tickets behind the Niners bench at Arrowhead ..
      (I’m gonna try)

    2. I suggest that Grant and / or SRPD sell red-and-gold caps with “Cohnhead” printed on them to help this blog’s denizens identify each other. The ones who live in/work in/visiting South Bay can get together at a bar to roast Grant and bemoan the lack of “a #1 receiver” / lack of a “monster edge rusher” / lack of “short yardage RB” / Jimmy G’s choice of dates, etc. etc. ……

  17. Sigh, Grant is such a POSITIVE person. Then he rips Pettis to shreds. ;p
    .
Actually, I rather like the Not So Bad. I get enough of the Pollyanish pom pom perspective from the other writers.
    .
Technically speaking, Grant needs help. His face is washed out in the glare, and he does not seem to get centered.
    .
Sure would like Grant to invest in a 49er poster, so he could hang it up behind him. Maybe his fiancee can produce a Niner related piece of art, for the backdrop. I think she has talent.
    .
Still, it was very informative, and a big reason why I like this site so much.
