“Garoppolo completed 17-of-24 passes, unofficially, and stats such as these make Shanahan cringe. He said he doesn’t want players getting concerned by what they might see on social media regarding media reports, and although he did not infer that Garoppolo’s 70.7 completion percentage in camp was bugging the quarterback or others, the coach simply wants his players to use this time to try new things without fear of failure.”

    1. Media is saturating TC. Tons of info. The digital internet makes writing on paper seem quaint.
      .
Players need to learn to ignore the criticisms. They have more important things to think about. Journalists are just doing their job. Negative comments should be expected, every drop parsed and missed blocks thoroughly analyzed.
      .
Players can use some comments as motivational fodder, but they should never, ever, let the opponents and detractors see them sweat.
      .
They should channel Bill Walsh. He was insouciant, imperturbable, unflappable, unruffled, Cool, calm, collected.

  2. Nice to hear Solomon is doing so well. With him and Defo rushing from the inside we are sure to start seeing those pressures finally amount to sack, although our outside pressure has to play a strong role as well. Not sure what to make of Marsh, is he that good or is McGlinchey that bad??? Its so tough to judge when they only match up against each other.

Grant – Has Marsh matched up with anyone else, and how has he looked?

  3. Why did they trade Trent Brown? Attitude, they did not want him in the locker room. Do you think there is any chance they could trade Trent Taylor? They seem to have quite a few talented WR’s and I believe Taylor has value as a slot receiver and punt returner. It sounds like Richburg is getting over powered, it would worry me if you went back and watched some regular season tape and you saw the same thing happening in real games. How has Pita T. looked in one on one drills? With Fred Warners size, speed and intelligence I think he could become a defensive swiss army knife with the team using him all over the field. I would really like to see them give him some reps as a pass rusher. Great coverage today Grant, thanks,

    1. Yes, Brown was addition by subtraction as far as Shanalynch is concerned.
AFFP made a good point in the previous blog post why the outcomes of these one-on-ones in practice mean little.

      1. Yes regarding AFFP. I was going to post a reference to it, but glad you did. I thought his point was so “on point” that I actually copied AFFP’s post and placed it in my football folder so I can refer to it.

    2. Thanks Grant for the live reports ..and Periscope is GREAT TOO…Keep it up.!!!

BOY…the 49ers should of moved up for for Quenton Nelson who so far looks good in camp according to T.V. 13 in Indy:

“He is Velcro Man; defensive players stick to him and don’t extricate themselves until long after the whistle sounds. First, Nelson sent Rakeem Nunez-Roches falling backwards. He stuffed Caraun Reid. He made quick and dirty work of Hassan Ridgeway. These are all 300-plus-pounders. Granted, none of them will make you forget Aaron Donald, but these are professional football players and Nelson, the rookie, made them look silly while making GM Chris Ballard look smart, really smart. He’s a force of nature, a player who projects as a Pro Bowl quality guard for years to come.”

    3. Grant makes a good point as to why Petis is better on the outside. I also always thought he would replace Garcon and not Taylor. Taylor is worth much more the the Niners than they would get in trade for him. Why even trade your good young receivers. I believe Garcon is gone next year for certain.

      1. Willtalk,
With the development of Burbridge and James there are some difficult decisions to be made regarding WR’s. I would hate to lose either of those WR’s as well as Taylor but Taylor would have the most trade value. I’m not bringing up Taylor because I don’t like his skill set but because I believe he has the most value. imho

    4. I think John Lynch was paying back Belichick for giving the Niners JG. That trade was accomplished in a blink of an eye, so it sure seemed like the deal was proposed way ahead of the draft.
      .
Did not hear a peep about any possible bad attitude. T Brown was just not a good fit for the OZ running game.
      .
However, it sure looks like they are happy on the Pats Pulpit. Brown is ensconced as the starting LT, so he will protect Brady’s blind side. Getting a third and giving up a fifth may have not been adequate for a starting LT, but then again, giving up a second round pick for a franchise QB is a steal.
      .
I do not think they trade away Taylor. He is basically untradable with his back issues. Aldrick Robinson would be a better candidate.

  4. Grant,
One more thing, you haven’t mentioned Beathard in a few days, how has he looked? On a number of the other sites they haven’t mentioned him in particular but he is mentioned when writers are writing about positive plays different WR’s are making. I really like the kid and believe he will eventually develop into the type of back up QB who could bring a 2nd rd pick in a trade.

  5. Shanny today: “I was a little surprised Garnett didn’t make it today. I’d be more surprised if he’s not out there tomorrow.”
    Not looking good for Garnett…..

    1. Another Trent Baalke bust, sadly. How many are left? Can’t be that many now.

  6. I think Shanny has Grant in mind here:
““We didn’t used to get reports of stats on our practices and I don’t get the reports and judge our guys off of them. You tell everyone to ignore them, but I guarantee people hear it, their wives hear it, someone hears it. You know Jimmy’s completion percentage every day, how many picks he threw and I just try to put myself in players’ shoes. You’re going out trying to practice and get better at stuff, trying new things, stuff you don’t always do in games and you’re getting reports on stuff that you had a bad completion percentage or you can’t do this. That stuff worries me for players because now I’m afraid they’re going to go there and be like, ‘Man, I know you want to try this new thing, but I don’t want this to go viral for the next week, I don’t want people to say I can’t throw this type of ball.’ “

      1. This is probably one of the reasons many coaches like Harbaugh dislike open practices…

  7. Pettis is actually doing better than I anticipated. I still think he is very much an outside receiver, not someone you use at any WR spot, but his ability to get open has been better than I expected.

Good to hear Thomas has strung together a couple of good days too.

  8. Had thought about subscribing to The Athletic after David Lombardi started writing there. But Barrows’ fleeing Sac Bee to The Athletic pushed me into subscribing to it. They have a 40%-off sale going on which helped :)

    1. I’m a current subscriber to The Athletic, but will not re-subscribe this month when my subscription runs out. Not a fan of Tim Kawakami. Nuff said.

  9. I never thought Pettis’s primary issue was “bravery and courage” as Grant put it. I thought it was a lack of physicality. It seems like an aggressive press corner won’t let him get off the line. Also, will he be able to bounce back from a big safety hit. Having said that, he has skills. He is quick and runs good routes.

    We shall see.

  10. Nice job on KNBR today Grant. You held your own against the always sarcastic GR.
    In other exciting news,
NFLnews.com rates Jimmy G. as the best looking QB in NFL camps so far this preseason.

  11. Nice, instead of pushing against the chest, Thomas has violent hands.
    .
Looked like Taylor, Day and even Will Sutton got pressure.
    .
Glad to see Cooper get some reps.
    .
Good periscope. very informative. Technical difficulties seem to keep popping up. Do not know if it was my computer, but Grant froze a couple times.

  12. Hi Grant,

Am old school and do not have a smart phone. I saw one of your periscopes and found it interesting, but since then I cannot access them. There are apps that only apply to smart phones. What if all you have is a computer?

Please post how to log in without a smartphone.

    Thanks,

    Bill Bruneau
