What are 49ers options at QB in 2009?

Mike Singletary is the 49ers’ interim head coach. Shaun Hill is the interim starting quarterback.

Whether they think about it in these terms or not, both men are auditioning in the final weeks of the season to remove the “interim” tags from their job titles in 2009.

That is the subject of my article in tomorrow’s Press Democrat. Click on the link to read, “Singletary, Hill hoping to lose interim tags.”

So what will the 49ers do next season at quarterback? Here are the most likely options:

Currently under contract in ’09 — Shaun Hill, Alex Smith.

’09 free agents — J.T. O’Sullivan, Jamie Martin.

’09 free agents starting in NFL — Matt Cassel (Patriots), Kerry Collins (Titans), Jeff Garcia (Buccaneers), Kurt Warner (Cardinals).

And, then, there’s the NFL draft. Here are the top seniors and juniors, and the projected round in which they will be taken, as ranked by NFLDraftscout.com:

Seniors — Third round: Graham Harrell (Texas Tech). Third or fourth round: Hunter Cantwell (Louisville), Rhett Bomar (Sam Houston State).

Juniors — First round: Matthew Stafford (Georgia), Colt McCoy (Texas). First or second round: Mark Sanchez (USC), Tim Tebow (Florida), Nate Davis (Ball State). Second round: Josh Freeman (Kansas State). Third round: Zac Robinson (Oklahoma State). Third or fourth round: Dan LeFevour (Central Michigan). Fourth round: Tim Hiller (Western Michigan).

UPDATE: Sophomore — Sam Bradford (Oklahoma) is eligible to declare for the 2009 draft because he redshirted as a freshman. He is rated as the top QB prospect among the sophomores.
