Will Singletary be here Saturday?

It’s pretty clear that disgruntled NT Aubrayo Franklin will not be here in Santa Clara for the final day of minicamp tomorrow. But how about coach Mike Singletary?

As reported by NationalFootballPost.com, the United Way of Greater McHenry County in Illinois is advertising a fundraising event for Saturday, June 19, that includes a motivational speech by the 49ers head coach. It’s at the McHenry West High School campus from 12-3 p.m. local time, with Coach Sing speaking at 1 p.m.

That’s 11 a.m. California time, when the 49ers should be a half-hour into the morning practice. To this point, there has been no mention of Singletary missing one day (and two practices) of the minicamp. Clearly, something has to give.

The obvious guess is that the United Way got the date wrong, and its donors will be disappointed. But a commenter on the NFP site added that the WGN cable network has been promoting other Singletary events in Illinois this weekend – three talks at Willowcreek Community Church in South Barrington, one Saturday night and two more on Sunday. It seems impossible that the coach could wrap up practice at 6 p.m. (PST) on Saturday and get to Illinois for a Saturday-night appearances.

Adding additional intrigue to the situation: The McHenry event is supposed to include safety Oshiomogho Atogwe as well. Atogwe has been dating one of Singletary’s daughters, a bond that has spurred widespread speculation that the 49ers might be among the NFL suitors for the free agent’s services.

If Singletary indeed makes this trip, he should get plenty of alone time with Atogwe to talk Xs and Os, contract money or team philosophy.

There’s one final piece of this mystery. The media aren’t scheduled to speak with Singletary today. We’re lined up for just one day of access to the coach over the minicamp. On Saturday, of course. Will we get the chance? Can’t wait to untangle this knot.
