Wittum dies at age 60

Tom Wittum, a two-time Pro Bowl punter who played for the 49ers from 1973-’77, died Friday, Jan. 22, the team announced this afternoon. He was 60.

Wittum appeared in 70 games with the 49ers, averaging 40.8 yards per punt. He was also a standout baseball player at Northern Illinois. As a senior, Wittum led the Huskies to their first NCAA Tournament baseball appearance.

Following his five seasons with the 49ers, he became a teacher and coached for 30 years.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; son, Matt; daughter, Krissy; step-daughter, Michelle; and stepson, Michael. A memorial will be held at The Chapel, 25270 W. IL Route 60, Grayslake, IL, on Tuesday at noon.
