  1. I tuned out of your Periscope report Grant. Bringing up a passer rating, without referencing the game situation and details, is as weak of an analysis as I have ever seen. You are better than that!

    1. I didn’t watch the periscope. Was Grant actually questioning the QB change? Or was he just putting down CJ and making every excuse for Hoyer?

        1. That sounds about right. But that late pick affected his rating. I give CJ a mini pass on the INT.

          1. #80
The defense was basically shooting fish in a barrel. We had no other option but to pass on the last play that led to the INT.
The questionable call on Garcon took us out of FG range and the Redskins secondary was playing 15-20 yards deep and knew we were had to put the ball up.

I give CJ a B+ not solely because of his numbers but because of the intangibles like creating a spark for the entire team when he came in and because of his fearless ability to throw the ball notwithstanding his first game as a pro. Really like his quick release on his passes as well.
I had him ready to start at around the 10th game of the season but it looks like he is ready right now.
            All hail the CJ takeover!

            1. I said it’s about right and he gets a mini pass for the pick. He was off target on a number of throws throughout the game. I think B-/C is about right. Of course it’s up for interpretation.

It was his first game and I expect him to get even better. I agree, all hail the CJ takeover!

      1. Good question. I tuned out after about five minutes of rambling. FIrst CJ was ‘not bad’ then later after glancing down at his stat sheets ‘good’. I mean what is the point of reference? Totally unprepared to write Grant gets in front of a camera-unprepared. Hope they are not paying Grant much because his effort is seriously lacking.

            1. I counted three drops while Beathard was the QB — one by Breida and two by Kittle. I’ll have to check on the yardage later.

      1. Saying a QB was just OK, considering all of the circumstances? …. first career playtime, on the road, without many first team reps, entering a game down 17 points, and then outscoring a good opposing QB by 15 points, giving a team that looked left for dead through the first 23 minute a chance to win the game in regulation ….. that’s playing OK? Mentioning a meaningless passer rating without mention of at least 3 critical drops and a 4th down hail mary INT?

Yet Hoyer gets an A- last week even though he was simply HORRIFIC for nearly the first 3 QTRS against a bad defense? You call that balanced reporting Grant? I think NOT!

        1. Hoyer was never the entire problem this season, only the BIGGEST problem. And if you couldn’t see that, after the rookies performance today, you need to find a new gig!

I’m signing out for a while Grant. Your bias has really rubbed me the wrong way this time!

          1. No, you said “was Beathard good? I don’t know if I would call him good … he was, he was decent. His QB rating was 71 .- 2”. You mention the stupid, misleading QB rating twice. As if the passer rating told the story in any way today. That’s simply not up to my standard of reporting, sorry.

You really need to reassess your obvious bias to further your agenda Grant!

            I’m out!

            1. It wasn’t that great of a performance, and PFF agrees (not that I put any stock into their grades). But when you factor in the context, it was a good performance, as I said in the video. Most of what Beathard brought to the game didn’t show up in the stat sheet, and that’s fine.

  2. I still want them to jettison their rub routes, to eliminate the possibility of a flag.
    .
I agree, Ray Ray had 2 horrible plays.

  3. Another weekly serving of moral fiber, but at least it’s keeping me regular. I feel cleansed….

  4. Point of fact: CJ lead us back out of Hoyer’s mess.

Bottom-line is that when Hoyer was getting us way behind by being the worst 1st through 3rd quarter QB in the NFL, he doesn’t earn credit for getting things back together.

  5. I said that they should showcase Hyde if they want to trade him, but I also thought they should get Hyde involved in the passing game.
    .
Instead of that interception along the side line, they should have thrown a jump ball in the end zone. Can’t really fault him for that pick, because at least he got off the throw, and did not get sacked.

    1. Why? We just needed a FG. That throw has a better chance of being completed than a Hail Mary.

      1. They were defending against the side line pass. If there was a penalty in the end zone, the ball would be spotted on the one yard line with time to get off a field goal try.

        1. I get that, but a Hail Mary has virtually no chance of being completed and in no way shape or form are they going to call a PI penalty on a Hail Mary.

Thanks for not being our coach Sebby

            1. This game was no moral victory for me, good buddy.

The defense is atrocious. The Redskins could have whopped up on us harder had they continued to run the ball and throw underneath. There was no sense in a vertical passing game. The line can’t get pressure when the QB three step drops and throws it 3 yards which turns into 8. The scheme is garbage with what we have.

Based on watching the game, the players either have no idea where their zones are or the coverages are too subjective. I consistently see LB’s and CB’s leaving their zones with uncovered receivers still in that zone. A defense as simple as a cover 3 or cover 2 shouldn’t be too hard to figure out. A 2-3 zone in basketball is effective and easy if you have the personnel to run it.

Keep coaching and freedom fighting from your laptop, Sebster.

  6. Grant,

Now you know why Shanahan asked for a 6 yr. contract—This is a 7 year problem and Jed was lucky to get anyone to take on this job, but stupid enough to let Baalke (the player whisperer) whisper in his ear every year that his players have an upside; they just needs developement

Aside from the LB’s and Hyde problem you mentioned, I’m concerned about out DB’s, WR’s, O-Guards, Arik Armstead and Beathard…Beathard threw a few short of the target on those 4th Qtr. sideline passes, and some were behind the Wideouts….I understand there’s O-Line problems, etc.

Josh Allen should be our 1st round pick next year, period.

    1. *Where to start with our # 1 next year. There’s so many leaks in the ship this year, it’s going down no matter how many draft picks you have next year.

I agree with Prime and RebuildaWinner. That pick should be a QB, although watching Brock Coyle fake a blitz on 3rd and 7 with 7 minutes left in the game, as Washington sent a back through his vacated hole on a Texas pattern toward the left sideline left me grasping for another round of Cuervo, unnerved enough to forget where we need to spend the # 1 because of all our holes, so I gave up.

I’ve decided our only big win this season will be the winner of the Cleveland/49er Toilet Bowl game for the # 1 pick in the 2018 NFL draft.

      1. Seb,

Did you get a moral victory from the last second offensive PI on Garcon as he was the intended target and the receivee of the actual shoving ?

  7. First team in NFL history to lose 5-straight by 3 or fewer points! We’re #1! We’re #1!

Anyway, Bethard (per Shanahan) is the new starting QB for the 49ers going forward.

  8. I am glad they are playing CJB. He is a mobile QB so now KS can dial up some rollouts.
    .
To all the experts who called the Read Option dead, Cousins did it twice to beat the Niners.
    .
Hope they sit players who are not playing well. Ray Ray, Fusco and Kittle.
    .
Glad they played cleaner, but still had silly mistakes that extended drives and killed drives.
    .
My prediction was Niners 24-23, so I missed the exact score by 3 points. Another moral victory.

    1. Read option is dead as a system. THe Wild Cat is dead as a system. You still see the odd read-option play and the old Wild Cat play. But neither system provides superior/extra-ordinary results due to defensive unfamiliarity.

      1. The read option is alive and well, just like elements of the WCO are still in play. The 5-0 Chiefs have even used the pistol, so if they are judiciously implemented, they can be effectively used.

        1. No. You fail to understand. Teams will, on occasion, run a read-option play. Just like with the Wildcat. As a SYSTEM it is dead as a doornail.

          Learn the difference.

The WCO is still alive and kicking even if some have modified it somewhat.

          1. I have never said that the read option should be run exclusively, and no other system could be used.
            .
I have always said that it should be another arrow in the quiver. Another weapon that should not be sheathed.
            .
Therefore, the read option is alive and well, just like elements of the WCO.

  9. Some stats.

    Beathard rating. 72.1
    Hoyer 45.3

Hyde 2TDs, 75 total yards, tied Garcon for most receptions.

Thomas 9 tackles (7 solo), 2 TFL, 1 QB hit.
Cooper 3 tackles, 1 TFL, 2 QB hits. Would like to know his snap count.

    1. Interesting that you conveniently left out King Solomon collecting sack #2 against Captain Kirk, with your stat report….

      1. Gross mistake on my part. If I were trying to conveniently leave something out, I wouldn’t have mentioned Thomas at all. I have frequently acknowledged it when he has made plays. You, however, have never mentioned the plays where he has looked bad. You are the one with an agenda.

          1. Yup, I said I made a mistake. Did you watch? Will you acknowledge him getting burnt by Cousins and missing two tackles, if not more?

              1. It does actually. All I want is to be able to have a honest discussion about our #3 pick, good and bad.

      2. Thomas was very good today. But man, he really needs to stop getting fooled by the read-option. I’m not sure what he is being taught by Saleh/ Zgonina, but he can’t be losing contain like that unless there is a player tasked with looping round the end in case the QB keeps it. Ward spared Thomas’ blushes once too when he came up fast from the end zone to stop Cousins on an earlier keeper.

      3. Speaking of convenience Razor. You conveniently took some time off while this thread was active.

“Solomon Thomas must improve his pass-rush technique.”

    2. While Thomas did well, he also was burned on that read option TD Cousins made in the 4th quarter. Just keeping it real, but he will get better with more experience.
      .
All his detractors need to eat crow. King Solomon is worthy of his number 3 status.

      1. 4 more sacks to go to make my prediction of 6 prescient. Hopefully Foster can get on the field next week against the Cowboys, where we get our first win….

  10. Kaep needs to choose his battles wisely.
    .
I think he is being blackballed, but there is no law that says that is illegal. He should just be patient, because GB just lost their QB, so attrition will open up new opportunities.

    1. They may be blackballing Kaep. It does not change the fact that he is not a very good qb.

  11. Seb,

Did you get a moral victory on that last second PI on Garcon even though he was the intended target and the one being shoved by two Washington players, to move the Niners out of game winning FG position ?

Looked to me like the Kwaun Williams PI giving Washington a TD was suspect also and that the 49ers may have been fighting the refs and the White House on this one

    1. TomD,

I read an old thread from March a few days ago. I noticed you were touting Kareem Hunt. I was touting Aaron Jones, who has been good, but certainly not as good as Hunt. Good call.

      1. Thx, # 80.

Yeah, thought he’d look good in our WCO, but Shanahan had to see what he had in Hyde.

As of now, I see Beathard as a solid # 2. Things could change with some weapons and a solid O-Line surrounding him.

I hate to make duplicate picks, but I see too much talent in Josh Allen of Wyoming to let him slip.

We could always trade Beathard down the road for a # 2 or # 3 if he develops into a solid backup.

In a perfect world, Beathard becomes a solid QB and we can use our 2018 pick on a Leo Pass rusher.

  12. No doubt in my mind we would be idiots to pay Cousins that much money. CJ with very talent around him looked more then capable. I think we have a QB fellas. A starting QB going forward.

  13. I was sorry to see Bow go, but it was the right move. I am delighted to see the youth movement. Let’s use this season to truly see where we are and what players will stick. There is no way Kyle would put CJ in if he has not been doing his homework and looking good in practice. It will be fun to see if he is the possible future at qb. He looks smart and in command, has a quick release and seemed to make good decisions. Obviously not the strongest arm. If he sticks at qb then next years draft will be very interesting.

I hate to lose, but these games have been fun to watch. So far.

  14. Kaep is indeed being blackballed. For his lack of skills, not his politics. Unfortunately for him, film doesn’t lie, and teams watch current film, not film from 5 years ago. He’s 3-16 in his last 19 starts and has only beat the lowly Jets and Rams. He’s not very good. If he was even half way decent, he’d be playing. He’s not. He won’t. ;)

    1. If anyone was going to sign him before, they certainly won’t now! No one wants the threat of lawsuits if you don’t do what he wants.

    2. Would you sign this:

Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman reports that Colin Kaepernick “has filed a grievance under the (NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement) for collusion against the owners.”

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora also reports similar news, saying Kaepernick is considering this step of filing a grievance. The Washington Post also confirmed the report that he plans to file the grievance.

Since Kaepernick, who is from Milwaukee, started his protests during the anthem about racial profiling and police treatment of minorities in 2016, the San Francisco 49ers released him. No NFL team has hired him since.

  15. It would be great if Grant could go back to written postgame reports instead of these “Periscopes.” The former takes minutes to read, the latter can drone on for close to an hour. That’s probably a feature for the most hardcore fans that have nothing else to do, but for the busy among us that means skipping the Periscope and not getting the postgame report at all. People can still read, Grant.

    1. I agree Victor. I come here to read. I usually have the TV going in the background. Especially on Sunday when I’m still watching football.

    2. Naw, I like the periscopes, and posters can ask quick questions and get Grant’s answers and feedback.
      .
Considering I do not peruse the other sites that much, these periscopes are interesting and informative.

  16. League officials need to meet urgently on fixing the awful referee calls, e.g., by making penalties automatically reviewable in last 2 minutes. They have much problems than players sitting or kneeling during anthem.

  17. Keep in mind that after draft this is what Grant said about Beathard,
“Beathard has zero “wow” traits, meaning the ball doesn’t explode out of his hand and he doesn’t throw with good trajectory. That’s why he completed less than 30 percent of passes that traveled more than 20 yards the past two seasons. He is what you call a JAG — just a guy. Grade: F.”

Now he doesn’t want to admit that he is wrong so he will spend the whole season highlighting anything less than perfect from Beathard. The difference between Hoyer and Beathard was substantial. Beathard’s rating (assuming you even want to go there) was 72 but without the last interception which was essentially a desperation last pass (using Grants’ own retorts) it was 86 or so. That’s quite an upgrade from Hoyer who was around 45 or so. The fundamental difference between the two is that Beathard can throw accurately when under pressure whereas Hoyer is usually very inaccurate when under duress.

Here is the major problem with Grant. He has many good insights, but he spends too much time trying to defend what he said at an earlier time. e.g. Beathard sucks, Hyde doesn’t fit the offense, or whatever.

    1. Grant made that grade because, if you read the whole grade, he thought the Niners wasted a pick to move up to get him. Afterwards, he said that CJB fit into KS’s scheme well. CJB was rated 215, but the Niners chose him at 104. During the preseason, CJB had good mobility, but floated some passes.

      1. I pointed out it a 7th rounder which , in all practical purposes, is nothing more than a guaranteed UFDA-quality player. That’s all it is. You just get to force some 4th rate player you’re hoping against hope will somehow make an impact on your club into your team whereas UFDAs get to chose (if they’re lucky).

  18. How many yards per play did the team have with Hoyer vs. Beathard? Isn’t that how you evaluated Hyde vs. Breida?

    1. Thomas’ grade would have been pretty decent too, but expect his getting fooled on the read-option went against him.

Great to see the safeties bounce back this week. Last week was not good for them.

    2. I agree on CJ.

As for Tartt, I think he’s taken Reid’s job. In his first two years, Tartt was a disaster in coverage and was constantly missing tackles because he went for the knock-out hit and didn’t wrap up. But this year, he’s been playing like he really belongs in the NFL. Reid, on the other hand, only came out when we played 6 DBs.

  19. Why not take your 28 video presentation in which you repeat yourself over and over again within the first few minutes and condense it to 2 or 3 pages in written form? Who has the time on Monday morning to sit through a 28 minute video? I do not. Is it to too old school to seek a good written analysis like back in the day when the sports section was printed on green paper?

      1. Unless I am missing something, you might want to check http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/, there are only 3 posts for Oct 15. One a pregame what to expect, the video above, and Grades. Are you referring to Grades as your post game report? Reading the other comments I think what is missing is a real post game report, an opinion on the game as a whole. Something to explain what happened, like if the two sideline throws that Hoyer could not is what convinced Shanahan to bench him. Their are already tons of grades (PFF, etc) and none of them capture the emotions of the game and why decisions were made. It is a team game and all parts interact. What the fans are wanting to read is an editorial. Give me a press credential and pay my expenses and I would deliver commentary on what happened and why in detail.
You got the dream job and your preparation and presentation appears that you put very little effort into it.
