49ers activate Jason Verrett ahead of key NFC West showdown

Reinforcements may be on the way for the 49ers defense.

The team announced today that cornerback Jason Verrett has been activated from the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform List.

Whether Verrett will be available for Sunday remains to be seen. Regardless, San Francisco needs a victory over Los Angeles to keep pace with the rest of the NFC West.

Kyle Shanahan was noncommittal when asked about the plans for Verrett.

“We aren’t ruling out this week,” said Shanahan. “Just have to wait and see how he practices and go from there.”

San Francisco’s pass defense has been in shambles since losing Emmanuel Moseley late in a win over Carolina.

Over the last two weeks the 49ers have allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete 79 percent of their pass attempts, average 11.5 yards attempt, and five touchdown passes.

Next up is Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp.

Although Stafford has struggled this year, throwing an interception in five of the Rams first six games, he and Kupp can put up numbers in a hurry.

If Verrett is unable to go, second year cornerback Deommodore Lenoir will once again start opposite Charvarius Ward.

Lenoir has been a solid option on the outside. Over the last two weeks he has allowed a passer rating of 90.2, compared to 118.7 for Ward.

One last item regarding the secondary.

With Lenoir starting on the outside, it appears Jimmie Ward has taken over the starting nickelback role.

Ward returned to the lineup after missing the first four games with a hamstring injury. He played one snap against Carolina before being sidelined with a broken hand. The veteran missed the game in Atlanta but made his return to the lineup against Kansas City.

It was a struggle.

Patrick Mahomes posted rating of 133.7 when throwing into Ward’s coverage on Sunday.

If the 49ers pass rush isn’t able to get pressure on Stafford like they did in week four, this could be another long day for the defense.

Practice Notes:

  • The list of players not participating in practice was long. Arik Armstead is still dealing with the foot and ankle injuries which have kept him out the last three weeks.

Joining Armstead on the sideline today were Deebo Samuel, Kyle Juszczyk, Samson Ebukam, Trent Williams, and Jauan Jennings.

  • Rookie running back Jordan Mason was also not on the field during the portion of practice open to the media.
  • Christian McCaffrey spent about five minutes during the special teams period working with Bobby Turner.
  • The team signed running back Tevin Coleman to the practice squad.

In 4 games this season, Coleman registered 12 carries for 26 yds. and 1 TD as well as 3 recepts. for 44 yds. and 1 TD.

  1. A healthy Verrett and a healthy Ward would be huge on the back end. Jack, If that happened, do you think Lenoir goes back to playing nickel? Does Jimmy Ward then go back to Starting Safety?

  2. Jimmy Ward looked like he had a hard time running with the cast on his arm. He especially looked completely out of balance on the TD pass he gave up. Is there any word on how long the cast will be on? I would rather see him at FS only as long as he has the cast on. Womack or Johnson can play the nickle back.

  3. The 49ers are better than the Rams even with all the injuries. The 49ers should win this game. As far as Verrett goes, I’m very hopeful he can come back and have a good year. If he’s not ready this week then don’t rush him back. To me, the 49ers shouldn’t count on any contribution from Verrett. If he is able to contribute then that is icing. But the reason I’m rooting for Verrett is because I’m a fan of his as a man. What a great example of hardship, perseverance, and hard work. Supremely talented with bad luck and a body probably not geared for the demands of the NFL.

    1. Totally agree about JV. What about Womack in the slot? he seems like a natural there. It was pre season
but he was picking off a pass evert game

    2. Totally agree. Verrett is an admirable person. Lots of intelligence, integrity, and wisdom. I hope he can make it back. A real leader in the lockerroom. The Iggy of the Niners.

  4. Kadarius Toney to the Chiefs. Jeez, the rich get richer. Toney is an unbelievable playmaker. In his final year at Florida, Toney was almost un-tackleable and that was against SEC defenses. Not sure what the issue was in NY with Toney, but he will be huge for the Chiefs. The Chiefs offense is already great. It will now be unstoppable. This just put the Chiefs over the Bills in the AFCCG. Take your money to the window now.
