49ers add Samuel Womack in round 5

With the 172nd pick in the NFL Draft, the 49ers selected cornerback Samuel Womack from Toledo.

This marks the second consecutive draft in which San Francisco has taken a cornerback at this spot. Last year they selected Deommodore Lenoir with pick 172.

Womack is a quick player who shows a physical style of play. In addition to his quick-twitch, Womack shows the ability to jam wide receivers at the line of scrimmage and stay with them down the field.

Leading the Rockets in pass breakups in each of the last three seasons, Womack set a Toledo record with 39 pass breakups in his career.

Womack will find some familiar faces when he gets to Santa Clara. Current 49ers cornerback Ambry Thomas and Womack played at rival schools during their high school years and have kept in touch. Womack sent a congratulatory text to Thomas following the interception that sealed the 49ers week 18 victory over Los Angeles.

In addition to Thomas, Womack will work alongside former Toledo teammate Ka’dar Hollman who signed with the 49ers in February.

Womack will likely compete with Deommodore Lenoir, Darqueze Dennard, and Dontae Johnson for the slot cornerback role while also contributing on special teams.
